SUNNY AND IN THE 50'S TODAY...LOTS OF OUTDOOR ACTIVITY.
I THINK YOU KNOW THAT THE BELLEVUE MARQUETTE GIRLS WON FRIDAY NIGHT AND GO TO THE STATE TOURNAMENT.
BUT, YOU DO NOT KNOW THAT THE NORTHEAST OF GOOSELAKE GIRLS LOST LAST NIGHT BY 10 POINTS. IT WAS THE 3RD YEAR IN A ROW THEY WERE A GAME AWAY FROM GOING TO STATE...AND AGAIN THIS YEAR, THEY DID NOT MAKE IT.
SO, FROM THE KMAQ AREA, JUST THE ONE TEAM WILL BE AT THE STATE TOURNAMENT AND KMAQ WILL BROADCAST THEIR GAMES OUT THERE.
DANE PAPE LOST LAST NIGHT, 4 TO 2, IN HIS BID FOR A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. BEEN TO STATE ALL 4 YEARS IN HIGH SCHOOL AND A 4TH AND A 3RD AND TWO 2ND'S.
HAVE A GOOD WEEK.

CHRIS HAHN OF MAQUOKETA LOST HIS MATCH THIS AFTERNOON, 4 TO 2 AND WILL WRESTLE AGAIN TONIGHT.

DANE PAPE WON HIS MATCH, 6 TO 2 THIS AFTERNOON AND WILL WRESTLE TOMORROW NIGHT FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP.

NOT MUCH SUNSHINE BUT 46 FOR A HIGH TODAY.
BIG TOURNAMENT BASKETBALL GAME IN DEWITT TONIGHT BETWEEN THE MAQUOKETA GIRLS AND DEWITT GIRLS. THEY EACH HAVE NEARLY IDENTICAL RECORDS AND EACH HAS DEFEATED EACH OTHER ONCE ALREADY THIS SEASON. WE WILL BROADCAST IT AT 7 TONIGHT. LEIGHTON HEPKER AT THE MIC.
I THINK I FORGOT AN OBITUARY LAST WEEK. CLEMENT F. MAREK, 87, OF OXFORD JUNCTION DIED FEBRUARY 15TH IN CEDAR RAPIDS. HIS MAQUOKETA CONNECTION IS THAT HE IS SURVIVED BY JOHN AND GERI LAWRENCE OF MAQUOKETA, WHOM HE WAS RAISED BY.
JASON A. FAULKNER OF MAQUOKETA, IS RUNNING FOR ST. REPRESENTATIVE. HE HAS NEVER GIVEN A PRESS RELEASE, BUT DID CIRCULATE SHEETS AROUND TOWN INVITING EVERYONE TO A MEETING, FEBRUARY 22ND AT THE MAQUOKETA COMMUNITY CENTER. I DID NOT ATTEND THE MEETING. AND WE HAVE NO INFORMATION ABOUT HIM. NOT SURE EITHER IF HE IS A DEMOCRAT, REPUBLICAN OR INDELENDENT. MORE WHEN I FIND OUT MORE. AT THIS TIME, WE HAVE TWO ANNOUNCED CANDIDATES, DEMOCRATS JASON HAYNES AND TOM SCHUELLER AND NO REPUBLICAN. ST. REP. BOB OSTERHAUS, DEMOCRAT, IS NOT GOING TO SEEK RE-ELECTION THIS NOVEMBER.
ST. MARK'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH HAS ANNOUNCED THAT THEY WILL AGAIN HAVE A SHROVE TUESDAY SUPPER, ON FEBRUARY 24TH AT THE CHURCH, CORNER OF MAPLE AND NIAGARA IN MAQUOKETA. MARY BURLINGAME WAS ON "KMAQ'S JUST TALK" SHOW TODAY TO PROMOTE IT. SHE AND HER HUSBAND, PASTOR AL, CAME TO MAQUOKETA BACK IN 1969 AND HE DIED OVER 20 YEARS AGO. SHE IS STILL ACTIVE IN THE CHURCH.
JIM RANKIN OF MAQUOKETA WILL CELEBRATE HIS 80TH BIRTHDAY FEB. 23. HE WAS BORN IN MAQUOKETA AND HIS DAD WAS A LONGTIME PLUMBER AND FIREMEN. JIM IS RETIRED FROM AN INSURANCE COMPANY IN DES MOINES. HE IS A PAST MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCILMAN. HE AND WIFE MARILYN HAVE A SON DAVID AND HAVE TWO GRANDCHILDREN AND TWO GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN. MARILYN WORKED FOR KMAQ A FEW YEARS IN THE 1970'S.
THE MAQUOKETA MUNICIPAL ELECTRIC UTILITY HAS PURCHASED FOUR AUTOMATIC EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATORS, AT A COST OF $1,495 EACH. THEY CAN BE OPERATED BY PEOPLE WITHOUT MEDICAL TRAINING ON VICTIMS OF SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST. TWO WILL BE CARRIED ON BOOM TRUCKS, ONE WILL BE KEPT IN THE COUNCIL CHAMBERS AND THE 4TH WILL BE KEPT AT THE MAIN GENERATING PLANT. I'VE READ THAT MANY PEOPLE ARE BUYING ONE OF THESE FOR THEIR HOME. BY THE WAY, KENT SHOUSE, IS THE NEW BOARD CHAIRMAN OF THE MMEU BOARD.
A VERY BUSY PLACE WEEKENDS IN MAQUOKETA IS THE "FACTORY OUTLET WAREHOUSE" STORE OUT IN THE INDUSTRIAL PARK, SELLING FACTORY 2NDS AND DISCONTINUED ITEMS FROM THE PACIFIC COAST FEATHER COMPANY IN MAQUOKETA.
PEOPLE COME FROM ALL OVER ON SATURDAYS AND SUNDAYS. THEY ADVERTISE YOU CAN SAVE 50-80% OFF RETAIL ON COMFORTERS , PILLOWS, AND OTHER PRODUCTS MANUFACTURED OUT THERE.
SPRING IS JUST A LITTLE OVER A MONTH AWAY. ON THAT NICE THOUGHT, I'LL END THIS.

SUNNY AND WARMER TODAY..HIGH OF 44. LOTS OF SNOW MELTING.
THE MAQUOKETA BOYS LOST TO WESTERN DUBUQUE LAST NIGHT 47 TO 45 HERE
IN MAQUOKETA. BUT, DEWITT ALSO LOST TO MARION. DEWITT HAS FINISHED THEIR REGULAR SEASON AND MAQUOKETA STILL HAS 2 MORE GAMES LEFT, SO THERE IS STILL A CHANCE FOR MAQUOKETA TO TAKE THE WAMAC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP ALL BY THEMSELVES. ADAM HEPKER LED MAQUOKETA IN SCORING WITH 25 POINTS.
THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS WILL BE MEETING IN SPECIAL CLOSED SESSION SATURDAY MORNING TO ADDRESS A DICIPLINE PUNISHMENT FOR THE STUDENT WHO RAN NAKED (STREAKED)AT THE BASKETBALL GAME LAST FRIDAY NIGHT IN MAQUOKETA. ACCORDING TO THOSE IN ATTENDANCE, THE STUDENT, WHOSE NAME HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED, WAS ONLY WEARING A PIECE OF CLOTHING AROUND HIS FACE AND HE SUPPOSEDLY DID THE STUNT ON A "DARE". HE COULD BE SUSPENDED FOR 9 DAYS OR EXPULSION FROM SCHOOL IS POSSIBLE, BUT WOULD REQUIRE BOARD ACTION. PERSONALLY, I HOPE THEY DON'T GO THE EXPULSION ROUTE.
THE ISSUE OF IF OR IF NOT TO HAVE A FULL BACKYARD BURNING BAN WAS DISCUSSED AT THE CITY COUNCIL MEETING MONDAY NIGHT, BUT NO ACTION WAS TAKEN. WHATEVER THE OUTCOME, BACKYARD GRILLING WOULD NOT BE EFFECTED.
SUPERVIORS DISCUSSED COMPLAINTS RECEIVED ABOUT JUNK VEHICLES AND OTHER ITEMS AT THE FRANK RANDALL PROPERTY NEAR THE ROCKDALE ROAD NORTH OF MAQUOKETA. THE SUPERVISORS ASKED ZONING ADMINISTRATOR DAVID MANNING TO WORK OUT A CLEANUP PLAN WITH RANDALL AND REPORT BACK TO THE SUPERVIORS.
MORE POP MACHINES BROKEN INTO THIS WEEK ON EAST PLATT IN MAQUOKETA.
IN JACKSON COUNTY MAGISTRATE COURT, TERRY KREMER, AGE 21, OF MAQUOKETA, WAS FINED $272 ON CHARGES OF POSSESSION OF DRUG PARAPHENALIA AND 30 DAYS IN JAIL, 29 SUSPENDED, ON CHARGES OF SIMPLE ASSAULT, AMENDED FROM DOMESTIC ASSAULT. THE COUNTY ATTORNEY SAID THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH EVIDENCE FOR A DOMESTIC ASSAULT CHARGE. POLICE SAY KREMER BODY-SLAMMED HIS GIRLFRIEND AND DRUG HER BY THE HAIR IN THE 100 BLOCK OF SOUTH NIAGARA STREET IN MAQUOKETA AROUND CHRISTMAS. AND THEN ON JANUARY 25, 2004, POLICE STOPPED HIS VEHICLE ON WEST PLATT STREET IN MAQUOKETA AND THREE HYPDERMIC NEEDLES AND OTHER DRUG PARAHENALIA WERE FOUND IN THE VEHICLE.
NO BIRTHS OR DEATHS.
THANKS FOR THE VISIT.

MAQUOKETA BOYS LAST NIGHT, HERE, BEAT DON BOSCO...70-36.
SOPHOMORES ALSO WON, 50 TO 25.
NOT MUCH EXCITEMENT THE GAME....
UNTIL..
THE CROWD WAS "STREAKED"
A "STREAKER" CAME IN ONE GYM DOOR....AND....QUICKLY OUT THE OTHER DOOR
ACROSS THE GYM....DURING A TIMEOUT...
WEARING ONLY SOMETHING THAT COVERED HIS FACE.
SUPT. KIM HUCKSTADT RAN OUT OF GYM TO TRY AND CATCH HIM, BUT DIDN'T.
AS FAR AS I KNOW..HE GOT AWAY.
GOOD THING HE WASN'T AT THE SUPER BOWL...HE WOULD HAVE UPSTAGED JANET JACKSON.
HAVE A GOOD WEEK.

SUNNY AND WARMER TODAY, WITH A HIGH OF 34. COLDER TOMORROW THEN WARMER AGAIN ON FRIDAY.
THE MAQUOKETA BOYS, RANKED 9TH, LAST NIGHT BEAT DYERSVILLE BECKMAN UP THERE, 66 TO 33. TYLER KRUEGER WAS TOP SCORER WITH POINTS. ADAM HEPKER AT 18.
HERE, THE MAQUOKETA GIRLS DEFEATED DYERSVILLE, 75 TO 34. BRITANY DAVIS HAD 17 POINTS.
MIKE COTTON, COUNTY AUDITOR THE PAST 20 YEARS, FROM SABULA, ANNOUNCED THIS WEEK HE WILL SEEK RE-ELECTION. AND SHERIFF RUSS KETTMAN SAID HE WILL SEEK A THIRD TERM. ONLY OTHER OFFICE UP THIS YEAR, IS THE SUPERVISOR POST NOW HELD BY DAVE KENTALL OF RURAL BELLEVUE. NO WORD YET ON IF HE WILL RUN FOR RE-ELECTION.
A TRAFFIC STUDY FOR WEST PLATT OUT BY THE NEW DICK'S SUPER MARKET AND GASSER TRUE VALUE HARDWARE STORE, HAS BEEN COMPLETED AND THE FIRM THAT DID IT, H.R.GREEN AND COMPANY, SAID THE CITY HAS A COUPLE OPTIONS. RE-STRIPE THE INTERSECTION TO ALLOW FOR LEFT TURN LANES OR ASK THE IOWA D.O.T. FOR ST0P AND GO SIGNALS, WHICH WOULD END UP COSTING THE CITY ABOUT $150,000.
MOST COUNCIL MEMBERS AGREE, THAT SO FAR THERE DOES NOT SEEM TO BE A PROBLEM OUT THERE BUT THAT THE STRIPPING SHOULD BE DONE TO MAKE THE SITUATION EVEN BETTER THAN IT IS NOW. THIS ALL HAPPENED AT A COMMITTEE MEETING THIS WEEK AND THE ENTIRE COUNCIL WILL MAKE THEIR DECISION AT NEXT WEEK'S FULL COUNCIL MEETING.
MAQUOKETA SCHOOL STUDENTS AND STAFF NEXT SUMMER WILL START SCHOOL ON AUGUST 26TH, A WEEK LATER THAN SCHOOL STARTED THIS PAST SUMMER.
AND, CHRISTMAS VACATION WILL BE SHORTER THAN IN THE PAST. THESE DECISIONS WERE MADE THIS WEEK AT THE SCHOOL BOARD MEETING WHEN THEY APPROVED THE 2004-2005 CALENDAR. GRADUATION DAY 2005 WILL BE ON JUNE 5TH.

NO BIRTHS OR DEATHS.

SUNNY AGAIN TODAY, BUT COLER!
I WENT TO THE TUESDAY NOON-HOUR "BROWN BAG LUNCH" AT THE JACKSON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUM TODAY. THEY HAVE IT EVERY TUESDAY NOON AND THERE MUST HAVE BEEN ABOUT 20 THERE TODAY. EVERYONE BRINGS THEIR OWN SANDWICH AND THE COFFEE AND TEA IS FURNISHED. JUNIOR PAPKE AND I WERE THE ONLY MEN. CURATOR BONNIE (WELLS) MITCHELL AS ALWAYS GAVE A SHORT HISTORY PROGRAM AND TODAY IT WAS ON HARVESTING THE MAQUOKETA RIVER IN THE WINTER, IN THE OLD DAYS. ONE OF THE GREATEST MAQUOKETA BUSINESSMEN OF THE LAST CENTURY, ED KIRCHOFF, GOT HIS START AT MAKING LOTS OF MONEY, AS OWNER OF THE MAQUOKETA ICE COMPANY, HARVESTING ICE ON THE MAQUOKETA RIVER. HIS DAUGHTER, LOIS, IN CLINTON, SENT SOME PICTURES TO SHARE AT TODAY'S LUNCHEON. YOU ARE INVITED TO TAKE IN ONE OF THE TUESDAY SESSIONS!
REMEMBER ED? IF SO, USE THE KMAQ GUEST BOOK TO TELL US WHAT YOU REMEMBER!
AT THE SCHOOL BOARD MEETING LAST NIGHT, THEY TALKED ABOUT BUILDING A NEW TRACK AT THE HIGH SCHOOL AND SIX LIGHTED TENNIS COURTS. THE MAQUOKETA BOOSTER CLUB HAS MADE A LARGE DONATION TO THE PROJECT. SUPPORT SERVICES DIRECTOR FOR THE DISTRICT, JERRY NELSON, SAID HE WAS TOLD IF THE PROJECT WERE BID IN MARCH, THE TENNIS COURTS AND THE TRACK COULD BE COMPLETED BEFORE WINTER AND THE READY FOR THE SPRING 2005 SEASON. NELSON SAID THE ESTIMATE FOR A NEW TRACK AT THE SAME LOCATON AS THE OLD ONE, IS $220,000 AND THE SIX TENNIS COURTS ARE ESTIMATED AT $180,000.
THEY ALSO TALKED ABOUT A PROPOSED NEW OFFICE FOR THE MIDDLE SCHOOL, SO IT COULD BE MOVED FROM THE 2ND FLOOR. THE FIRST DESIGN CALLED FOR A NEW FRONT DOOR AND THAT PLAN WAS TOO COSTLY. SO, THE REVISED PLAN WOULD USE ONE OF THE EXISTING TWO SOUTH STREET-LEVEL DOORS FOR THE OFFICE AND THE OTHER DOOR FOR THE ENTRANCE TO BUILDING. FINAL PLANS SHOULD BE PRESENTED TO THE BOARD SOON WITH BIDS SENT OUT IN MARCH.
THE POLICE DEPARTMENT IS INVESTIGATING SOME VANDALISM DONE AT THE JACKSON COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS. SOMEONE BROKE WINDOWS AND DOORS TO THE INFORMATION BOOTH, THE OPTIMIST FOOD STAND, THE BEER STAND AND THE STOCK CAR RACING FOOD STAND. NOTHING APPEARED TAKEN.
THE MAQUOKETA BOYS, RANKED 9TH IN THE STATE IN 3-A BASKETBALL, PLAY AT DYERSVILLE TONIGHT AND THE MAQUOKETA GIRLS ARE HOSTING DYERSVILLE.
"THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST" STARTS ASH WEDNESDAY, AT THE VOY 1 THEATRE
IN MAQUOKETA. STARTS NATIONWIDE THAT DAY ALSO. MANY OF YOU HAVE HEARD OF IT. WE ARE THE SMALLEST TOWN IN IOWA TO GET IT AND WILL HAVE IT AT LEAST 4 WEEKS.
NO DEATHS OR BIRTHS.
THANKS FOR CHECKING IN.

4 and a half inches of snow last night and total for the week, 9 and a half inches.
Some sunshine today and high of 33.
Our 2nd day of the farm and home show is going well, but down from yesterday because of the weather.
Big story today, the Maquoketa Area Foundation has received an estate gift from Helene and Harlan Ruff, in the amount of approximately $646,000. The Ruffs, both of Maquoketa area, had farmed and worked in the area for most of their lives. Income from the endowment is to be used for scholarships for students graduating from Maquoketa High School, whose parents reside in Farmer's Creek Township. Harlan passed away on July 11, 2000 and Helen died January 4, 2004. This is the second largest gift ever received in the foundation's history. The foundation was established in 1982 and has assets of $3.5 million dollars. According to a close friends, the Ruff's were very common people. They lived through the Great Depression. They saved and invested wisely, but had fun. They liked to travel and play cards. They had no children.
The Maquoketa Rotary has pictures and a video of the Ag Awards Ceremony yesterday at the KMAQ Farm and Home Show....at www.maquoketa-rotary.org
There will also be more pictures coming up on the KMAQ Home Page, of people at the farm show.....at www.kmaq.com
Jerry and Melissa Widel of Andrew had a boy Monday at the local hospital.
Grandparents are Dr. Mark and Karen Intlekofer of Maquoketa and Paul and Millie Widel of Maquoketa.
The Maquoketa girls were to host Independence tonight in basketball but because Indepedence closed school today because of the weather, the game could not be played tonight and was re-scheduled for tomorrow night. The Maquoketa boys were to play up there at Independence, but it also was called off and and has been re-scheduled for February 26th.
No deaths.
Have a good weekend.

TOTAL SNOW FALL, AS MEASURED BY ROBERT CHRISTENSEN, 5 AND A HALF INCHES. SUNNY TODAY AND MESSY OUTSIDE.
CHRISTENSEN, RETIRED, REPORTS WEATHER INFORMATION TO KCRG-TV IN CEDAR RAPIDS AND TO KMAQ....HE HAS
SPECIAL EQUIPMENT AT HIS HOME AT THE WEST EDGE OF MAQUOKETA ON LAKEHURST ROAD. SUCH THINGS AS RAIN AND SNOW TOTALS, HIGHS AND LOWS....AND THE DAY AFTER WE HAVE RAIN OR SNOW, HE CALLS ME AT 6:50 A.M. AND WE CHAT ABOUT IT FOR A COUPLE MINUTES OVER THE AIR. HE'S A RETIRED BARBER AND TEACHER AND WIFE BONNIE WORKED FOR MANY YEARS AT JC PENNEYS IN MAQUOKETA AND NOW WORKS PARTTIME AT THE MAQUOKETA AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OFFICE.

ANOTHER MAJOR STATE REVENUE CUT FOR JACKSON COUNTY ... OVER $400,000. SUPERVISOR JACK WILLEY SAYS THE COUNTY WILL PROBABLY HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO RAISE TAXES.
LOTS OF MINOR ACCIDENTS IN BOTH JACKSON AND CLINTON COUNTY YESTERDAY AND LAST NIGHT BECAUSE OF THE ROAD CONDITIONS.
STEPHANIE BOWLING AND MARK EMERSON OF ANDREW ARE PARENTS OF A BOY BORN JANUARY 28TH AT THE LOCAL HOSPITAL. GRANDPARENTS ARE BRENDA AND EVERETT BOWLING OF MAQUOKETA.
I RAN INTO A GUY AT BOWMAN'S FULL SERVICE GAS STATION TODAY WHO LIVED IN MAQUOKETA IN THE EARLY 50'S...AND HAS NOT BEEN HERE FOR YEARS. HIS GREAT GRANDFATHER WAS FAMOUS MAQUOKETA PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE PAST, WILL CUNDILL. HE ASKED IF THE BON TON CAFE WAS STILL OPEN. LIVES IN PEORIA. I TOLD HIM TO STOP IN NEXT TIME HE'S IN TOWN AND THEN I'LL GET MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE GUY, RETIRED FROM THE MILITARY. SAYS HE MAY SOMEDAY RELOCATE BACK TO THIS AREA. WILL CUNDILL TOOK A LOT OF PHOTOS OF MAQUOKETA BACK IN THE EARLY 1900'S. BUDDY OLSON MIGHT REMEMBER OLD WILL.
NO MAQUOKETA BASKETBALL TONIGHT. WE ARE BROADCASTING A GIRL-BOY DOUBLE HEADER, FROM ANDRW, WHERE THE ANDREW HAWKS TONIGHT HOST NORTH CEDAR (LOWDEN-CLARENCE-STANWOOD).
