Our 2nd day of the farm and home show is going well, but down from yesterday because of the weather.

Big story today, the Maquoketa Area Foundation has received an estate gift from Helene and Harlan Ruff, in the amount of approximately $646,000. The Ruffs, both of Maquoketa area, had farmed and worked in the area for most of their lives. Income from the endowment is to be used for scholarships for students graduating from Maquoketa High School, whose parents reside in Farmer's Creek Township. Harlan passed away on July 11, 2000 and Helen died January 4, 2004. This is the second largest gift ever received in the foundation's history. The foundation was established in 1982 and has assets of $3.5 million dollars. According to a close friends, the Ruff's were very common people. They lived through the Great Depression. They saved and invested wisely, but had fun. They liked to travel and play cards. They had no children.

Jerry and Melissa Widel of Andrew had a boy Monday at the local hospital.
Grandparents are Dr. Mark and Karen Intlekofer of Maquoketa and Paul and Millie Widel of Maquoketa.

The Maquoketa girls were to host Independence tonight in basketball but because Indepedence closed school today because of the weather, the game could not be played tonight and was re-scheduled for tomorrow night. The Maquoketa boys were to play up there at Independence, but it also was called off and and has been re-scheduled for February 26th.

No deaths.
