4/100 OF AN INCH OF RAIN AROUND 8 LAST NIGHT. TODAY, CLOUDY AND COOL WITH HIGH IN 60'S,

AT THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL LAST NIGHT....

IT WAS LEARNED THAT MMEU(MAQUOKETA MUNICIPAL ELECTRIC LIGHT AND POWER) AND THE CITY IS PLANNING TO START DISCUSSIONS WITH THE INTENT OF ACQUIRING THE LOCAL NATURAL GAS COMPANY SERVING MAQUOKETA. THERE WAS A 90-MINUTE CLOSED SESSION ON THE SUBJECT LAST NIGHT, PRIOR TO THE REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING. THE CURRENT GAS SUPPLIER, IS AQUILA AND THEIR FRANCHISE WITH THE CITY EXPIRESS IN MAY OF NEXT YEAR. THIS COULD BE INTERESTING...AND IF IT HAPPENS, COULD BE BIG FOR MAQUOKETA AND ITS CITIZENS. AN ELECTION WOULD BE A PART OF THIS IF THE TALKS GO ANYWHERE.

ALSO LAST NIGHT, THE COUNCIL IS THINKING OF PULLING THE PLUG ON SOME OF THE MAQUOKETA RIVER TRAIL. THE ORIGINAL PLAN WAS TO GO ALONG THE LENTH OF THE RIVER ALL THE WAY TO THE BICENTENNIAL PARK ACROSS FROM THE HOSPITAL. INSTEAD, THE COUNCIL IS THINKING OF A SHORTER VERSION,STARTING ON THE DIKE BEHIND THE BALLPARKS AND ENDING UP ON NORTH 5TH STREET AT THE CURRENT BOAT DOCK. I HOPE THEY CAN STILL GO ALL THE WAY TO THE PARK, SO MORE OF THE RIVER COULD BE ENJOYED BY WALKERS AND PARK VISITORS. THERE IS A GRANT TO DO ABOUT HALF OF THE WALK. THE ORIGINAL PLAN CALLS FOR ANOTHER 20 FOOT EASEMENT THE CITY DOES NOT NOW HAVE AND THE OWNER, JOHN THOLA, IS ASKSING $40,000 FOR THE ADDITIONAL EASMENT. PLUS, IT HAS BEEN DETERMINED THAT THE CITY WOULD HAVE TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR EROSION CONTROL OF THE RIVER BANK IN THE FUTURE AND THIS COULD BE COSTLY.

SOME VANDALISM....THE DOOR OF THE 5TH WARD PARK WELL HOUSE WAS DAMAGED...
PRAIRIE CREEK GOLF COURSE AT SOUTH EDGE OF TOWN HAD MARKERS AND FLAGS PULLED FROM THE GROUND....AND BEV RILEY OF 5TH STREET REPORTED THE HOOD AND REAR DOOR OF HER 2003 DODGE WAS KEYED.

CORRECTION ON THE WINNER OF THE CAR AT BELLEVUE SUNDAY. HE IS JOSH SCHECKEL....I REPORTED JOHN. HE IS THE OWNER OF JJ SCHECKEL CONSTRUCTION ON HIGHWAY 52 SOUTH OF BELLEVUE.

COURT NEWS: TARA TALLMAN, AGE 19, WAS FINED $82 ON CHARGES OF DISORDERLY CONDUCT.
AND CHARGES OF THEFT IN THE 5TH DEGREE WERE DISMISSED AGAINST RYAN TRACY, 22, OF MAQUOKETA.

LIGHT RAIN IS COMING DOWN IN MAQUOKETA RIGHT NOW.

HAD COFFEE YESTERDAY WITH LEON MORRIS OF TEXAS AND FORMERLY OF MAQUOKETA. HE GRADUATED FROM MCHS AND WENT INTO THE ARMY WHERE HE WAS A PILOT FOR 20 YEARS. THEN AFTER RETIREMENT IN THE ARMY, HE WENT INTO TRAINING TO BECOME A COMMERCIAL AIRLINE PILOT...AND HAS BEEN A PILOT FOR SEVERAL YEARS, CURRENTLY, DOING A DAILY RUN FROM DALLAS TO MINNEAPOLIS AND BACK. HIS PARENTS ARE MORRIE AND DOROTHY MORRIS, BOTH RETIRED, MORRIE FROM THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND DOROTHY FROM KMAQ. HE WILL HAVE TO QUIT FLYING IN ABOUT 3 YEARS WHEN HE REACHES THE MANDATED RETIREMENT AGE FOR COMMERICAL PILOTS, OF 60.
GOOD SEEING HIM AGAIN. HE HAD HAD A BUSY LIFE AS A PILOT...TOO BUSY TO GET MARRIED.

BILL AND JUNE URBANEK AFTER 26 YEARS, LEAVE MAQUOKETA FOR GRAND ISLAND, SOUTH DAKOTA. THEY HAVE SOLD THEIR MAQUOKETA HOME AND PURCHASED ONE THERE, CLOSE TO A COUPLE OF THEIR KIDS. A NICE HOT HUMID DAY TODAY, AROUND 90, WITH RAIN POSSIBLE LATER.
HAD OVER A HALF-INCH OF RAIN SATURDAY MORNING, BUT NOT ENOUGH TO CALL-OFF THE STOCK CAR RACES AND THE FIREWORKS AFTER. RACES WERE SHORT AND A VERY NICE FIREWORKS DISPLAY STARTED A LITTLE AFTER 9:30 P.M. SATURDAY NIGHT.

JOHN SHECKEL OF RURAL BELLEVUE WON THE 2004 CHEVROLET MALIBU LAST NIGHT JUST BEFORE THE BELLEVUE FIREWORKS. HE HAD PURCHASED AT LEAST ONE $20 CHANCE IN THE ANNUAL CHAMBER RAFFLE..OR MAYBE THEY WERE $25. I DON'T REMEMBER. IF SHECKEL DOESN'T WANT THE CAR, HE CAN TAKE $15,000 CASH.

THE MAQUOKETA ATHLETIC BOOSTERS ARE ALSO HAVING A NEW VEHICLE RAFFLE...A 2005 FORD FOCUS. TICKETS ARE $20. IN ADDITION TO THE CAR, THE CLUB IS GIVING AWAY THREE RUNNER-UP PRIZES TOTALING $250. THE DRAWING WILL BE DURING HOMECOMING ON OCTOBER 8TH. THE CLUB IS RAISING MONEY FOR THEIR PART OF THE $150,000 DONATION TO THE SCHOOL DISTRICT TO GO TOWARDS THE NEW TRACK FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL.

THE WYOMING, IOWA FAIR AND HORSE SHOW IS THIS FRIDAY NIGHT AND SATURDAY AND SUNDAY.

TIM AND TAMARA WILCOX OF DAYTON, MAINE, ARE PARENTS OF A BOY, BORN JUNE 29TH IN MAINE. GREAT-GRANDPARENTS ARE DON AND RUTH CASTEEL, AND MAXINE WILCOX, ALL OF MAQUOKETA.

THE MAQUOKETA ROTARY "CITIZIN OF THE WEEK" IS JOHN RANDOLPH BURROW, WHO JUST LAST MONTH WAS THE DIRECTOR OF THE PEACE PIPE PLAYER PRODUCTION OF "GYPSY"....JUST ONE OF MANY HE HAS DIRECTED OVER THE YEARS.
SEE A PICTURE AND STORY AT www.maquoketa-rotary.org
ALSO ON THE WEB SITE, SEVERAL PICTURES TAKEN AT THE RECENT ICECREAM SOCIAL AND BAND CONCERT AND A COUPLE VIDIOS TAKEN AT THE DUCK RACE.
A PICTURE TOO OF NEW ROTARY PRESIDENT, RICH HAINSTOCK, WHO TOOK OVER THE ROTARY REINS FROM JACK WILLEY ON JULY 1ST.

I GOT A NEW PUTTER FOR FATHER'S DAY....ANXIOUS TO USE IT....SHOULD TAKE OFF AT LEAST 2 STROKES. OH, I ALSO GOT A PUSH-BUTTON COUNTER TO CARRY WITH ME WHEN PLAYING GOLF...TO KEEP TRACK OF MY SCORE, PER HOLE. MIGHT
STILL BE A PROBLEM HOWEVER, AS IT ONLY GOES TO 10.

DID YOU KNOW THAT ONE OF THE TOP MOVIE GOERS AT MY THEATRE IS
REGINA SAGERS? SHE LOVES MOVIES! GOES TO A LEAST ONE MOVIE A WEEK. EVEN WENT DOWN TO THE QUAD CITIES TO SEE "FAHRENHEIT 9/11", BECAUSE SHE WAS NOT SURE IT WOULD BE SHOWN HERE IN TOWN. SHE SAID IT WAS OKAY, AS SHE IS A GOOD DEMOCRAT. WE HAVE NOT BOOKED IT FOR MAQUOKETA, AS OF TODAY. A FRIEND OF MINE, BOB FRIDLEY, WHO HAS A CHAIN OF THEATRES IN IOWA PUBLICLY ANNOUNCED LAST WEEK THAT NONE OF HIS THEATRES WOULD SHOW IT. MY THOUGHTS: I'M NOT SURE THEATRES SHOULD BE PLAYING "60 MINUTES" TYPE SHOWS ON THE BIG MOVIE SCREENS MENT FOR ENTERTAINING, NOT POLITICS. BACK TO REGINA. SHE DRIVES HER CAR, LIVES IN HER BEAUTIFUL HOME OF MANY YEARS AND GOES TO LOTS OF EVENTS IN TOWN. ALSO IS A BIG FAN OF U-CON WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL BECAUSE ONE OF THE TOP PLAYERS ON THE TEAM, ANN STROTHER, IS RELATED TO HER. REGINA WAS ONE OF THE FIRST WOMEN I GOT TO KNOW WHEN I CAME TO MAQUOKETA IN THE LATE 50'S, AS I RENTED A ROOM FROM HER MOTHER-IN-LAW, CECILIA SAGERS. NOW...TO CLOSE THIS STORY...REGINA IS 90...BUT YOU WOULD GUESS SHE'S IN HER 60'S.

"SPIDERMAN 2" IS BREAKING RECORDS. HAS NOT BEEN THAT BIG HERE IN
MAQUOKETA FOR SOME REASON?

HAVE A GOOD WEEK EVERYBODY!

HOT AND HUMID TODAY..HIGH OF 89.

ANDREW SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS A NEW SUPERINTENDENT TO REPLACE SARAH PINION WHO IS TAKING THE SUPERINTENDENT JOB AT JESUP. KENT HAMMER, AGE 56, STARTED TODAY. HE HAD HELD THAT POSITION WITH SEVERAL DISTRICTS IN ILLINOIS, BEFORE RETIRING. MOST RECENTLY, HE WAS EMPLOYED PART-TIME BY THE BETTENDORF SCHOOL DISTRICT. HE AND HIS WIFE LIVE IN FULTON, ILLINOIS.

A MAN FROM BERNARD, MIKE KREMER, AGE 81, WAS ABOUT TO PARK IN THE MAQUOKETA STATE BANK PARKING LOT JUST NORTH OF KMAQ. HE SAID HIS FOOT FELL ASLEEP AND HE COULD NOT REACH THE BRAKE IN TIME AND HIS PICKUP SLAMMED INTO THE KMAQ BUILDING JUST AFTER 3 THIS AFTERNOON. WE ALL HEARD IT. RAN OUT AND FOUND A 4 BY 4 HOLE IN THE CEMENT BLOCK GARAGE AREA OF OUR BUILDING. THE MAN WAS NOT INJURED. A PIECE OF PLYWOOD COVERS THE HOLE UNTIL IT CAN BE RE-BLOCKED.

KEVIN SCHECKEL OF N. MAIN,MAQUOKETA, SAID SOMEONE KICKED HIS SCREEN DOOR IN AND DAMAGED IT ON WEDNESDAY.

YESTERDAY, READERS OF THE DUBUQUE TELEGRAPH HERALD, INCLUDING ME, READ AN INTERESTING AP STORY THAT SAYS SURVEYS ARE SHOWING THAT COMMUNITY SWIMMING POOLS ARE GETTING OLD AROUND THE COUNTRY AND SWIMMING POPULARITY IS GOING DOWN QUITE A BIT. MAQUOKETA HAS A DRIVE UNDERWAY (6 YEARS OLD) TO REPLACE THE PRESENT POOL WITH A NEW INDOOR ONE. LITTLE MONEY RAISED SO FAR FOR THE ESTIMATED $4MILLION DOLLAR PROJECT, THAT INCLUDES A HEALTH CLUB AND GYM. ANYONE THAT WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE ARTICLE, SHOULD SIMPLY EMAIL ME (kmaq@kmaq.com) AND I WILL EMAIL THE STORY TO YOU.

CLAY JOHNSON JR, AGE 19, OF MAQUOKETA, WAS CHARGED WITH OWI AND NO INSURANCE WHEN STOPPED EARLY YESTERDAY MORNING ON SOUTH MATTESON.

JERRY RASMUSSEN, ONE OF THE MEMBERS OF MY MORNING COFFEE GROUP AT THE DECKER CELEBRATED HIS 84TH YESTERDAY. YUP, JERRY STILL HAS HIS '53
CORVETTE. I THINK ITS A '53. WORTH A LOT OF MONEY. HE AND DOROTHY TAKE A RIDE OCCASSIONALLY. THEY HAVE HAD GUESTS FROM DENMARK THE PAST TWO WEEKS...RELATIVES...AASE AMD RICHARD JOHANSEN OF KOLDING, DENMARK.
RICHARD IS 64 AND WE ENJOYED HIS VISITS WITH US AT COFFEE. JERRY'S
ANCESTORS ARE FROM DENMARK AND JERRY AND DOROTHY HAVE VISITED THE COUNTRY QUITE A FEW TIMES. ABOUT 15 YEARS AGO, AFTER RETIRING, JERRY WROTE BOOK ABOUT MAQUOKETA. GOOD BOOK. IF YOU WANT ONE, LET ME KNOW. I BELIEVE HE HAS A FEW LEFT. IF SO, HE MIGHT EVEN AUTOGRAPH IT FOR YOU.

NO BIRTHS OR DEATHS.

TAKE IT COOL.
