SLEET AND ICY ROADS THIS MORNING AND ALL SCHOOL DISTRICTS CANCELLED SCHOOL THIS MORNING. NOW, SNOW IS COMING DOWN AND WILL CONTINUE TONIGHT. WE EXPECT UP TO 5 INCHES OF SNOW BY TOMORROW MORNING.
SOME STORES DID NOT OPEN TODAY AND MANY CANCELLATIONS FOR TONIGHT. IT IS NOT A VERY NICE DAY TODAY IN MAQUOKETA.

THE DRIVER OF A SARA LEE TRUCK WAS INJURED AND MOST OF THE BAKERY PRODUCTS IN THE TRUCK WERE DAMAGED IN AN EARLY MORNING ACCIDENT AS A RESULT OF ICY RIADS. THE ACCIDENT, AT 3:58 A.M. THIS MORNING HAPPENED 4.3 MILES NORTH OF MAQUOKETA ON HIGHWAY 61. THE DRIVER LOST CONTROL ON THE 100-PERCENT ICE COVERED ROAD, AND THE VEHICLE WENT OFF THE ROAD AND ROLLED TWICE. THE DRIVER, DENNY COVEY, AGE 43, WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL HOSPITAL WITH MAJOR INJURIES. DAMAGES WERE LISTED AT $73,000 TO THE TRUCK OWNED BY METZ BAKING COMPANY IN ROCK ISLAND AND $18,000 DAMAGE TO THE BAKERY PRODUCTS. SHERIFF'S DEPUTY RUSS LONG INVESTIGATED THE ACCIDENT.

JACKSON COUNTY SHERIFF RUSS KETTMEN WAS IN AN ACCIDENT LAST FRIDAY MORNING IN THE BELLEVUE HIGH SCHOOL PARKING LOT. NO INJURIES. NO CHARGES WILL BE FILED ACCORDING TO BELLEVUE POLICE CHIEF LYNN SCHWAGER.
KETTMAN, AGE 47, WAS DRIVING HIS SQUAD CAR WEST ON HIGHWAY 62 BEHIND A VEHICLE DRIVEN BY KATIE KILBURG, AGE 17, OF BELLEVUE. THE SHERIFF WAS DISTRACTED BY A MESSAGE SIGN ON THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. KILBURG SLOWED TO ENTER THE SCHOOL PARKING LOT AND KETTMAN DROVE HIS SQUAD CAR UP AND OVER THE CURB TO AVOID IMPACT, BUT HIT KILBURG'S VEHICLE AS SHE TURNED INTO THE PARKING LOT. DAMAGES WERE LISTED AT $3,000 TO THE SHERIFF'S 2002 FORD OWNED BY JACKSON COUNTY AND $1,500 DAMAGE TO KILBURG'S 2000 FORD.

THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL MEETS TONIGHT.

MARTHA HEATH, AGE 83, OF EAST MOLINE AND FOMERLY OF MAQUOKETA, DIED SUNDAY IN ROCK ISLAND TRINITY MEDICAL CENTER. HE HAD WORKED FOR CLINTON ENGINES ON THE ASSEMBLY LINE FOR SEVERAL YEARS
SURVIVORS INCLUDE A SISTER IN MAQUOKETA, PHYLLIS NISSEN.

THE MAQUOKETA WRESTLERS TOOK 5TH PLACE IN THE WAMAC TOURNAMENT LAST SATURDAY AT VAN HORNE.
