SOME HEAVY RAIN THIS MORNING AND SUNSHINE THIS AFTERNOON, WITH A HIGH OF 64.   TOMORROW,  LOW 7O'S AND 78 ON WEDNESDAY.
LOOKS LIKE WE'LL HAVE A COOL WEEKEND, IN THE LOW 50'S.
BECAUSE OF THAT FORECAST,  WE HAVE DECIDED THE 61 DRIVE-IN
THEATRE IS CLOSED FOR THE SEASON.

THE MAQUOKETA COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT APPROVED A LOW BID FOR REPLACING THE ROOF FOR THE 1992 HIGH SCHOOL BAND AND VOCAL ADDITION.      THE LOW BID WAS FROM CONNELL SUPPLY HERE IN TOWN, AT $31,497.  THERE WAS ONE OTHER BID, NEARLY $3,000 MORE.

THE ODD FELLOWS EMPORIUM (SANDWICHES AND GIFTS) OPENED AT
8 THIS MORNING, NEXT TO THE BAKERY IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA.
A PHOTO OR TWO COMING SOON HERE,  WITH MORE INFORMATION.    THE BUILDING WAS OWNED FOR MANY YEARS BY THE ODD FELLOWS LODGE.  THE LODGE MEETING ROOM WAS UPSTAIRS AND THE GROUND FLOOR  HAS HAD A MIXTURE OF BUSINESS PLACES OVER THE YEARS.     AT ONE TIME,
THE HOME OF MAQUOKETA SENTINEL AND LAST DOZEN YEARS OR MORE, THE HOME OF THE MAQUOKETA COMMUNITY SERVICES THRIFT STORE.

HAVE A GOOD  WEEK.

THANKS TO THE BALDWIN WOMEN'S CLUB, THE MILLROCK SCHOOL WAS OPENED TO THE PUBLIC YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.   NANCY AND I ENJOYED OUR VISIT, THAT INCLUDED A POPCORN BALL.   THE SCHOOL IS LOCATED JUST SOUTH OF BALDWIN.  THE ROOF BELL WORKS FINE AND WAS RINGING ON AND OFF DURING THE AFTERNOON.    THE STONE STRUCTURE HAS THICK WALLS.      IT HAS A WORKING VICTROLA  78RPM  RECORD PLAYER AND I TOOK A VIDEO OF IT PLAYING  A CHRISTMAS CAROL.   I'LL  HAVE IT  POSTED ON  KMAQ'S HOME PAGE SOON AND KEEP IT THERE UNTIL CHRISTMAS.
SORRY TO SAY, I NEVER ATTENDED A ONE-ROOM SCHOOL.    BUT THEY EDUCATED MOST AMERICANS UNTIL THE 50'S AND 60'S.

THE MILLROCK SCHOOL IS OWNED BY JACKSON COUNTY CONSERVATION
AND IS OPEN ONLY BY APPOINTMENT.    LOTS OF SCHOOL CLASSES TOUR
IT ANNUALLY.    TO ARRANGE A TOUR, CALL ANN BURNS AT THE CONSERVATION OFFICE AT THE HURSTVILLE INTERPRETIVE CENTER.
TOP PHOTO IS OF DON WILLEY OF BALDWIN.  HIS MOTHER (MILDRED SCOTT WILLEY) ATTENDED THE SCHOOL.   JUDGE NANCY TABOR IS IN 2ND PHOTO BEHIND THE TEACHER'S DESK.   NOTE THE PICTURES OF WASHINGTON AND LINCOLN.    NEXT
PHOTO IS OF THE FURNACE AND LIBRARY.    THE SCHOOL WAS SMALL,
BUT PLENTY OF ROOM FOR THE DESKS NEEDED FOR GRADES 1-8.
NO KINDERGARDEN.     AND OF COURSE, BOTTOM PHOTO, A BOYS AND
GIRLS REST ROOM.
WHEN DENNIS AND JANET STANGE  CLOSED THE BRIDGEPORT SCHOOL ON
THEIR PROPERTY JUST NORTHEAST OF MAQUOKETA, YEARS AGO,  THE ITEMS IN IT WERE TAKEN TO THE MILLROCK SCHOOL.
