THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL BOARD HIRED CHRISTOPHER HOOVER, AGE 42, AS THE NEW SUPERINTENDENT THIS AFTERNOON.     HE WAS OFFERED  A TWO-YEAR CONTRACT AT $132,000 A YEAR.     HE IS CURRENTLY SUPERINTENDENT FOR THE TURKEY VALLEY AND SOUTH WINNESCHIEK DISTRICTS.   BOARD PRESIDENT MIKE HAYWARD SAID THE BOARD HAD TWO EXCELLENT FINALISTS AND IT TOOK THE BOARD TWO HOURS TO MAKE A DECISION.   HOOVER AND HIS WIFE KAREN HAVE ONE ELEMENTARY-AGED SON.

IN SPORTS, A PAIR OF TALENTED SOPHOMORES HAVE BEEN NAMED TO THE ALL-CONFERENCE GIRLS BASKETBALL FIRST TEAM.    CHIARA ATIENZA OF MAQUOKETA  AND AMANDA BRAINERD FROM CENTRAL DEWITT WERE BOTH SELECTED BY COACHES.    SENIOR AUBREE TAYLOR OF MAQUOKETA WAS NAMED TO THE SECOND TEAM.      CENTRAL OF DEWITT HEAD COACH MARK KURTZ WAS NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR.

THE PRE-GAME SHOW STARTS AT 6:40 TONIGHT ON KMAQ AND OUR WEB SITE.       LEIGHTON HEPKER AT THE PLAY-BY-PLAY MIC.
THE SABERS HAVE DEFEATED THE CARDS TWICE DURING THE REGULAR
SEASON, AND THE LAST TIME IT WAS A LAST SECOND VICTORY.
DEWITT IS 19 AND 3 (RANKED 6TH IN STATE) AND MAQUOKETA IS 9 AND 13.
MAQUOKETA GOT TO THIS DISTRICT FINAL LAST MONDAY NIGHT BY BEATING
DAVENPORT ASSUMPTION.    THE LAST TIME MAQUOKETA DEFEATED
ASSUMPTION WAS 20 YEARS AGO.    THOSE 2 TEAMS HAVE PLAYED
EACH OTHER A TOTAL OF 11 TIMES AND ASSUMPTION HAS WON 9 OF THE 11.
SHOULD BE A GREAT GAME!

THE JACKSON COUNTY   REGIONAL HEALTH  CENTER BOARD OF TRUSTREES
THIS WEEK APPROVED THE TAX ASKING FOR FISCAL YEAR    2014-15.    THE TAX LEVY IS  JUST OVER $1.06 PER $1,000 ASSESSED VALUATION, AND SAME
AS LAST YEAR.   HOWEVER, DO TO HIGHER PROPERTY ASSESSMENTS IN
THE COUNTY, THE HOSPITAL WILL SEE A SLIGHT INCREASE IN TAX DOLLARS FOR THEIR DISPOSAL.     C.E.O. CURT COLEMAN SAID THE ADDITIONAL $27,402 WILL BE USED TO HELP OFFSET THE HOSPITAL'S BAD DEBT ACCOUNT.

A 2-CAR ACCIDENT MONDAY AFTERNOON ON PLATT STREET.
DUANE DURKOP, JR., 43,  OF MAQUOKETA WAS DRIVING EAST ON PLATT AND ELIZABETH LENNON,34, OF MAQUOKETA PULLED OUT OF THE KWIK STAR PARKING LOT AND THE TWO VEHICLES COLLIDED.   LENNON WAS
CHARGED.   NO INJURIES.
"SON OF GOD"  RATED PG-13, STARTS TOMORROW NATIONWIDE
AND HERE IN MAQUOKETA AT THE VOY THEATRE.

JOHN DAGUE HAS SOLD HIS BUSINESS, "DAGUE EQUIPMENT" TO ROEDER BROTHERS,INC. IN BELLEVUE.     JOHN BOUGHT THE BUSINESS IN 1979.
THEN IT WAS LOCATED ON EAST PLATT STREET (THE FORMER CORNELIUS FARM STORE) AND IT WAS MOVED TO THE PRESENT LOCATION ON OLD HIGHWAY 61, SOUTH OF MAQUOKETA, IN 1995.      JOHN TOLD KMAQ HE IS PLEASED TO  SAY  HIS STAFF WILL REMAIN THERE.    HE ALSO WILL STAY
TO HELP WITH THE TRANSITION AND THEN WORK IN THE SALES DEPARTMENT.   I'VE KNOWN JOHN SINCE THE EARLY 70'S AND WE WERE
BOTH IN THE MAQUOKETA LIONS CLUB FOR MANY YEARS.    HE HAS A GOOD DEEP VOICE AND HAS DONE A LOT OF PUBLIC SERVICE "EMCEE" WORK OVER THE YEARS.    HAS BEEN A GOOD ADVERTISER ON KMAQ AND WE THANK
HIM FOR THAT AND WISH HIM THE BEST IN HIS SEMI-RETIREMENT YEARS.

THIS GROUP WILL BE DOING A JUNE CASH LEGENDS
SHOW IN MARCH AT THE OHNWARD FINE ARTS
CENTER.   TWO TICKETS TO FOR THE SHOW ARE
IN THIS WEEK'S ROTARY CLUB SILENT AUCTION.

JACKSON COUNTY REGIONAL HEALTH CENTER C.E.O. CURT COLMAN HAS ANNOUNCED THAT JEAN HAYES HAS BEEN HIRED AS THE CHIEF NURSING
OFFICER AT THE HOSPITAL.    A MAQUOKETA NATIVE, SHE WILL BEGIN HER
DUTIES MARCH 12TH.    SHE REPLACES CHERYL CURL IN THAT POSITION.
CURL, WHO PLANS TO RETIRE IN THE FALL OF 2015 WILL SERVE AS DIRECTOR OF CLINICAL SERVICES UNTIL HER RETIREMENT.      HAYES MOST
RECENTLY SERVED AS DIRECTOR OF CLINICAL SERVICES AT MEDICAL
ASSOCIATES OF DUBUQUE.  
ALSO AT THE HOSPITAL BOARD MEETING, IT WAS LEARNED THAT DEE DICKERSON HS BEEN HIRED AS THE NEW OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST AT THE HOSPITAL, REPLACING AL RIFE WHO HAS WORKED AT THE HOSPITAL FOR
MANY YEARS .

FOR THE LAST 3 WEEKENDS, THE ABOVE MOVIE HAS BEEN THE NUMBER ONE MOVIE IN THE NATION AND ALSO HERE IN  MAQUOKETA.

LEIGHTON  HEPKER WILL BROADCAST THE GAME ON KMAQ-FM AND
OUR INTERNET HOME PAGE, STARTING AT 6:15.

WE DID NOT GET THE ONE-INCH OF SNOW.
TODAY, PARTLY SUNNY AND HIGH NEAR 30.
SUNNY AND 27 TOMORROW.
SUNNY AND LOW 20'S SUNDAY.
COLDER THAN NORMAL FOR THIS TIME OF THE YEAR NEXT WEEK.

SPORTS:    THE 4TH DEWITT WRESTLER WAS  ELIMINATED AT THE STATE
WRESTLING TOURNAMENT THIS MORNING, SO DR. PAUL KOOB WAS ABLE TO COME HOME TODAY, A DAY EARLIER THAN HE HAS OTHER YEARS.   THIS
YEAR WAS  HIS 23RD  YEAR TO BROADCAST STATE WRESTLING ON KMAQ.
THANKS FOR ANOTHER GOOD JOB PAUL.

THE MAQUOKETA BOYS WILL HAVE A REGULAR-SEASON MAKE-UP GAME
TONIGHT AT 7:30 AT VINTON-SHELLSBURG.   MATT CLARK WILL BROADCAST
IT TONIGHT ON KMAQ-FM AND OUR INTERNET SITE.

THERE WILL  BE A FAN SEND-OFF SOMETIME SHORTLY AFTER  2 SUNDAY AFTERNOON AT TIMBER LANES FOR THE MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL BOY'S BOWLING TEAM THAT WILL BOWL  IN THE STATE TOURNAMENT MONDAY IN DES MOINES.

THURSDAY DAILY REPORT

RAINING THIS MORNING EARLY WHEN I CAME TO WORK AND THEN RAINED
ON AND OFF AFTER... AND A LITTLE AFTER 3 THIS AFTERNOON, A HAILSTORM
CAME UP  REAL FAST....HIGH WINDS AND QUARTER-INCH HAIL FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES.    WE HAD A REPORT OF THE WIND FLIPPING TWO SEMI TRUCKS ON 61 DURING THE STORM.   THE RESCUE SQUAD WAS CALLED!   NOW AT 4, RAIN HAS STOPPED BUT WE ARE AWAITING SOME SNOW SOON AND SOME MORE OVERNIGHT....A FORCAST FOR ABOUT AN INCH.   TOMORROW, SUNNY AND IN 20'S AND NO RAIN OR SNOW.   SOME PARTS OF IOWA GETTING A LOT
OF SNOW.

BIG STORY TODAY....FIRE AT THE BELLEVUE FIRE STATION.    WHEN THE POLICE ARRIVED, THEY SAW SMOKE ROLLING OFF THE RAFTERS JUST BEFORE 7 THIS MORNING.   BELLEVUE CALLED FIREMEN FROM SPRINGBROOK, PRESTON AND MAQUOKETA TO ASSIST IF NEEDED.
THE FIRE WAS CONTAINED TO THE APPARATUS ROOM AND THE BACK WALL, AN AREA THAT WAS RECENTLY REMODELED ACCORDING TO CITY ADMINISTRATOR LORAS HERRIG.    SOME EQUIPMENT WAS DAMAGED.
NO ONE WAS INJURED, THE CAUSE HAS STILL TO BE DETERMINED AND
THE BELLEVUE FIRE DEPARTMENT IS STILL FULLY OPERATIONAL.  BELLEVUE WILL BE IN THE MAIN TV HEADLINES TONIGHT AND TOMORROW MORNING.

THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL BOARD MONDAY MORNING WILL INTERVIEW FIVE CANDIDATES FOR THE JOB OF SUPERINTENDENT.

DEWITT HAS 4 WRESTLERS AT THE STATE MEET IN DES  MOINES.
ALL 4 WRESTLED TWICE THIS MORNING.    THERE WAS ONE VICTORY
OUT OF THE  8 MATCHES AND HE WRESTLES AGAIN AT 10 TOMORROW MORNING.   IT IS GREAT TO GET TO STATE....BUT THAT IS WHERE THE
COMPETITION IS VERY HARD.    DR. PAUL KOOB DID HIS USUAL FINE JOB
OF DESCRIBING THE MATCHES ON KMAQ.   

THE MAQUOKETA GIRLS LOST THEIR TOURNAMENT GAME LAST NIGHT
AND  HAVE ENDED THE SEASON.     

THE MAQUOKETA BOYS HAVE ONE MORE REGULAR GAME TOMORROW NIGHT BEFORE TOURNAMENT TIME.

RUMOR OF A WELL KNOWN BUSINESS BEING SOLD.  I'LL CHECK IT OUT.

SPRING IS A MONTH AWAY.
IT WAS 12 YEARS AGO THAT MAQUOKETA HAD THE HUGE HAILSTORM THAT CAUSED MAJOR DAMAGE TO CARS AND ROOFS....IN SEPTEMBER OF 2002.

A DECISION ON A STREETSCAPE PROJECT AT QUARRY AND MAIN
($400,000 ESTIMATED COST) UNTIL THIS FALL.     IN THE MEANTIME,
THEY ARE GOING TO HIRE ENGINEERS TO GIVE THEM A COST ESTIMATE TO DESIGN AND DO SIMILAR INTERSECTIONS (AT LEAST TWO) SOUTH ON MAIN STREET.

THE MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL BOY'S BOWLING TEAM WILL BOWL
IN THE STATE TOURNAMENT IN DES MOINES NEXT WEEK.   FRIDAY, IN A  QUALIFYING MEET IN CAMANCHE, THE CARDINALS TOOK SECOND
IN QUALIFYING, WITH 3,136 PINS.    THEY WERE LED BY SENIOR LUKE
QUINLAN WITH GAMES OF 279 AND 202.

IN TOURNAMENT BASKETBALL, TONIGHT THE CARDINAL GIRLS PLAY AT SOLON AT 7.   MATT CLARK WILL BROADCAST THE GAME ON KMAQ-FM AND
OUR INTERNET SITE, STARTING AT 6:50.

FIRST, CONGRATULATIONS TO THE PEACE PIPE PLAYERS ON ANOTHER
ENTERTAINING COMEDY!    LOVE, SEX AND THE IRS WAS A HIT  THIS PAST
WEEKEND WITH OVER 1,000 COMING TO IT.    WE HAVE  GREAT TALENT
HERE IN THE MAQUOKETA AREA.

WE SAW "PHILOMENA"  YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.   GREAT MOVIE!  
IT HAS BEEN NOMINATED FOR BEST PICTURE OF  THE YEAR AND I HOPE
IT GETS THE OSCAR.   JUDI DENCH IN THE LEAD ROLE ALSO HAS BEEN
NOMINATED FOR BEST ACTRESS.     IT WILL END THURSDAY NIGHT AT THE
VOY 3.      GOOGLE "PHILOMENA" AND WATCH THE PREVUE TRAILER!

TODAY'S SCHOOL BOARD MEETING TO TALK ABOUT CANDIDATES  FOR
THE SUPERINTENDENT'S POSITION WAS POSTPONED UNTIL 10 TOMORROW MORNING AT THE DISTRICT OFFICE.

CITY COUNCIL MEETING TONIGHT.   NOT MUCH ON THE AGENDA.

FOUR DEWITT WRESTLERS WILL WRESTLE AT STATE STARTING THIS
THURSDAY.   FOR THE 3RD YEAR IN A ROW, NO CARDINAL WRESTLERS WILL BE THERE.   DR. PAUL KOOB WILL FOLLOW THE SABERS AND DO EVERY SABER MATCH ON KMAQ.

THE CARDINAL BOY'S BASKETBALL TEAM BEAT MT. VERNON BY 2 POINTS
SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE LOCAL GYM.

IN CASE YOU ARE NOT PAYING ATTENTION....JUST A MENTION THAT BOTH IOWA AND IOWA STATE MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAMS NOW HAVE 19 WINS EACH.

AND YESTERDAY, THE MAQUOKETA CARDINAL GIRLS AND BOYS  BOWLING TEAMS BOTH BEAT INDEPENDENCE.    HIGH GAME FOR THE BOYS WAS A 255 BY DALTON WAUGH.  HIGH GAME FOR THE GIRLS, A 203 BY KAISEE
SCHNOOR.

I  HAD THIS PHOTO IN MY DAILY REPORT A FEW DAYS AGO AND IT BROUGHT
LOTS OF COMMENTS.    TODAY, I FINIALLY FOUND OUT WHO THE PERSON
IS IN THIS PHOTO.
CONNIE BEHRENS EMAILED ME AND SAID THE MAN IN THE PHOTO ABOVE IS HER GRANDFATHER, MAX ANDRESEN.    SHE SAID HIS STORE WAS IN
BALDWIN AND THAT SHE NEVER HEARD THE NAME OF IT OTHER THAN
THE BALDWIN STORE.    THANKS FOR THE EMAIL CONNIE!   WONDER
ABOUT WHAT YEAR THAT PHOTO WAS TAKEN?

A MAQUOKETA MAN WHO HAS SPENT NEARLY 30 YEARS IN PRISON FOR A MURDER COMMITTED IN 1984 IN MAQUOKETA WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR PAROLE.
DURING A RE-SENTENCING HEARING YESTERDAY MORNING, JUDGE MARK
SMITH RULLED MITCHELL RONEK, NOW 47, HAS BEEN RE-SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON WITH A MINIMUM OF 25 YEARS AND ELIGIBLE FOR PAROLE WITH CREDIT FOR TIME SERVED.
HE WAS SENTENCED IN APRIL OF 1985 FOR MURDERING THOMAS GOODWIN OF MAQUOKETA ON OCTOBER 8, 1984 IN THE BAR (HOTEL HAD ONE THEN) AT THE HURST HOTEL IN MAQUOKETA.
THE RE-SENTENCE CAME ABOUT AFTER THE FEDERAL AND STATE COURTS RULED IT WAS UNCONSTITUTIONAL THAT JUVENILES WERE SENT TO PRISON WITHOUT PAROLE.

BACK TO SPORTS, THURSDAY NIGHT, THE MAQUOKETA CARDINAL GIRLS
BASKETBALL TEAM LOST TO CASCADE 63 TO 35.   CASCADE NOW HAS A RECORD OF 22 AND 0 AND THE CARDINALS FINISHED THE REGULAR SEASON
WITH A 5 AND 16 RECORD AND OPEN TOURNAMENT PLAY THIS COMING WEDNESDAY NIGHT WHEN THEY PLAY SOLON.

MONTH, WATER INCLUDED.    CALL 563-212-3286.

TODAY'S REPORT:
SNOW SHOWERS THIS MORNING AND PARTLY SUNNY THIS AFTERNOON.
HIGH OF 35.    TONIGHT,  5 ABOVE AND.. SUNNY AND IN MID 20'S TOMORROW,
VALENTINES DAY. 

NO INJURIES WHEN A SEMI AND SNOW PLOW COLLIDED ON HIGHWAY 61  TWO MILES NORTH OF MAQUOKETA AT 9 THIS MORNING.   A MAN FROM ILLINOIS WAS DRIVING SOUTH AND CAME UPON THE SNOW PLOW DRIVEN BY GREGORY KRUSER, AGE 50, OF MAQUOKETA.      THE SEMI  HIT THE BACK OF THE SNOW PLOW.     THE TRUCK DRIVER WAS CHARGED AND $10,000
IN DAMAGES TO  HIS SEMI.    NO DAMAGE TO SNOW PLOW.

MAQUOKETA  HAS HAD 11 WATER MAIN BREAKS SINCE JANUARY 1 ACCORDING TO JEFF BODENHOFER, ALLIANCE WATER RESOURCES
MANAGER.     AS IT GETS WARMER, IT MAY CONTINUE.    WARMER WEATHER WILL DRIVE THE FROST DEEPER AND MAY CAUSE MORE PROBLEMS.
SAME FOR WATER PIPES ON PRIVATE PROPERTY AND COSTLY BREAKS THEN ARE REPAIRED BY THE HOMEOWNER.    LET YOUR COLD WATER TAP RUN A THIN STREAM OF WATER DAY AND NIGHT.

I GOT ANOTHER EMAIL REGARDING A GROCERY STORE IN BALDWIN,
FROM JEAN SCOTT.    IT SAID HER HUSBAND'S FAMILY OWNED THE STORE IN BALDWIN FOR OVER 50 YEARS.    HER HUSBAND'S GRANDFATHER, FRED W. SCOTT, STARTED IT IN THE LATE 1800'S AND WHEN HE DIED, IT WENT TO  HIS GRANDMOTHER WHO HIRED HER SON (MY HUSBAND'S FATHER) TO MANAGE IT.   AFTER MORE THAN 50 YEARS IN THE SCOTT FAMILY, IT WAS SOLD TO THE BOCK BROTHERS IN 1947.    JEAN ALSO WROTE THAT SHE HAS PHOTOS OF THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE STORE BACK WHEN THE STREETS IN BALDWIN WERE DIRT.     NOW, ALL I NEED IS TO KNOW WHO THE STORE CLERK IS IN THE PHOTO I PUT UP HERE EARLIER THIS WEEK.

OVER 10,000 CARS DROVE THROUGH THE PARK IN DUBUQUE DURING THE CHRISTMAS SEASON TO VIEW THE LIGHTS AND DISPLAYS.   OVER $96,000 WAS RAISED WITH THE $8 PER CAR FEE AND THE MONEY WILL  NOW BE
USED TO SUPPORT MULTIPLE PROGRAMS IN DUBUQUE.

THIS YEAR THE IOWA (DOT) DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION IS CELEBRATING 100 YEARS AND THE STATE DOT LIBRARIAN WILL PRESENT
A PROGRAM ON THE ANNIVERSARY AT 2 TOMORROW (SAT) AFTERNOON AT THE MAQUOKETA PUBLIC LIBRARY.    THE LIBRARIAN IS LEIGHTON CHRISTIANSEN, A MAQUOKETA NATIVE.  EVERTONE IS WELCOME.

VERY LIGHT SNOW TODAY AND HIGH OF 17.
TONIGHT, LOW OF 11.
TOMORROW, IN THE 30'S FOR JUST ONE DAY.

JACKSON COUNTY CONSERVATION WILL HOLD TWO PUBLIC MEETINGS
TO  GATHER IDEAS FOR THE USE OF THE LAND GIVEN LAST YEAR TO THE COUNTY BY THE LATE BOB MARTIN, WHO WITH HIS DAD, RAN JOE MARTIN
AUTO SALES IN MAQUOKETA FOR MANY YEARS, WHERE MAQUOKETA'S CITY HALL IS NOW.      THE LAND IS 273 ACRES IN SIZE, JUST EAST OF MAQUOKETA, WITH PRAIRIE CREEK RUNNING THE LENGTH OF IT.
THE FIRST MEETING WILL BE AT 6:30 NEXT TUESDAY AT THE HURSTVILLE
INTERPRETIVE  CENTER.    THE 2ND OPEN MEETING WILL BE AT 10 A.M. SATURDAY, MARCH 8TH AT THE MAQUOKETA CITY HALL.

THIS HAS TO DO WITH THE PHOTO IN YESTERDAY'S REPORT OF A GROCERY STORE IN WESTERN JACKSON COUNTY.    JERRY BAGUSS EMAILED ME
AND SIAD WHEN HE WAS GROWING UP, BOTH MONMOUTH AND BALDWIN HAD STORES.   IN BALDWIN IT WAS ON THE SW CORNER ON THE HIGHWAY WHERE
YOU TURN TO GO NORTH ON MAIN STREET.   IN MONMOUTH, THERE WAS A STORE ON MAIN STREET JUST SOUTH OF WHERE THE THEATRE WAS. 
TOM YAROLEM NOW OWNS THAT BUILDING AND A YEAR OR TWO AGO, THERE WAS A SECOND-HAND STORE IN THE BUILDING.    JERRY GOES ON TO SAY THAT ONE OF THE STORES, HE THINKS THE ONE IN MONMOUTH, WAS CALL
BRISTALL'S.    HE IS NOT SURE WHO OWNED THE ONE IN BALDWIN.
SO, GOOD INFORMATION FROM JERRY, BUT WE STILL DO NOT KNOW FOR
SURE WHAT STORE IS IN THE PHOTO.     MONMOUTH HAD A MOVIE THEATRE?
THAT'S NEWS TO ME.!

JACKSON COUNTY'S TAX RATE WILL NOT GO UP THIS COMING YEAR.
THE BUDGET WILL USE THE SAME RATE.   

"ROBOCOP"  STARTS TONIGHT IN MAQUOKETA AND NATIONWIDE.
AND, STARTING FRIDAY AT THE VOY THEATRE, ONE OF THE MOVIES
NOMINATED FOR AN ACADEMY AWARD FOR BEST PICTURE....

NO SCHOOL FRIDAY, SO THE THEATRE WILL HAVE A "BARGAIN MATINEE"
OF ALL 3 MOVIES AT 2 PM.

AT NOON TODAY, THE "FRIENDS OF AGRICULTURE" AWARDS WERE PRESENTED ON STAGE BY THE MAQUOKETA ROTARY CLUB AND THE
AG COMMITTEE OF THE MAQUOKETA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
THIS WAS THE 25TH YEAR FOR THE AWARDS.
MEMBERS OF THE CHAMBER AG COMMITTEE AT LEFT IN ALL 3 PHOTOS, ANNOUNCED THE WINNER AND ALONG WITH ROTARY PRESIDENT SCOTT
WARREN AT RIGHT IN EACH PHOTO, PRESENTED THE PLAQUE.

THE KMAQ FARM AND HOME SHOW IS GOING WELL.    GOOD TURN-OUT
TODAY, BUT BECAUSE OF THE WEATHER,  ATTENDANCE WAS DOWN.

THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL IS  WORKING ON NEXT YEAR'S BUDGET AND HAD A WORK SESSION LAST NIGHT.      LOOKS LIKE THERE WILL BE A TAX HIKE OF BETWEEN 34 AND 50-CENTS PER  $1,000 ASSESSED VALUATION.
