COUNTY SHERIFF DEPUTY DURING A CHASE SUNDAY NIGHT NEAR DEWITT.
HE WAS CHARGED WITH OWI-3RD OFFENSE, DRIVING WHILE BARRED AND DRIVING
WHILE LICENSE IS SUSPENDED. HE WAS BEING HELD YESTERDAY IN THE CLINTON COUNTY JAIL ON $7,500 BOND. ADDITONAL CHARGES ARE PENDING.
NO MAQUOKETA TEACHERS WILL LOSE THEIR JOBS NEXT YEAR. THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL BOARD LAST NIGHT AGREED THEY WILL HAVE TO CUT $646,600 FROM NEXT YEAR'S BUDGET, BUT IT WILL NOT MEAN TEACHERS WILL BE LAID OFF.
HOWEVER, THERE WILL BE SEVERAL POSITIONS, BOTH TEACHING AND STAFF, WHICH WILL NOT BE FILLED BECAUSE OF RESIGNATIONS OR RETIREMENTS.
THEE WILL ALSO BE SOME ASSISTANT COACHES AND OTHER ADVISOR POSITIONS
WHICH WILL BE CUT.
JACKSON COUNTY ATTORNEY CHRIS RAKER IS "TWEAKING" A PROPOSED ORDINANCE WHICH WILL REQUIRE COUNTY RESIDENTS TO NOTIFY THE LAW CENTER BEFORE
BURNING OFF SET ASIDE ACRES OR GRASS. THE JACKSON COUNTY SUPERVISORS RECEIVED THE REQUEST FOR THE ORDINANCE FROM BOTH BELLEVUE AND
MAQUOKETA FIRE CHIEFS. THEY SAY WHEN A CONTROLLED FIRE IS CALLED IN
AHEAD OF TIME TO THE LAW CENTER, IF A PASSER-BY SEES THE FIRE AND CALLS IT IN, THE LAW CENTER WILL KNOW THEY DON'T NEED TO SEND OUT THE FIRE DEPARTMENT NEEDLESSLY. THIS HAPPENS OFTEN NOW, COSTING WASTED TIME AND WAGES. WITH THE NEW ORDINANCE, TIME AND MONEY WILL BE SAVED.
