TERRIFIC DAY TODAY...SUNNY AND IN 60'S.

ELECTRIC BILLS FOR THE AVERAGE MAQUOKETA RESIDENT WILL GO UP ABOUT
$20 PER MONTH STARTING NEXT YEAR. THE MAQUOKETA MUNICIPAL ELECTRIC BOARD APPROVED THE RATE INCREASE AND LETTERS HAVE BEEN SENT OUT EXPLAINING THE RATE INCREASE. THE RATES ARE GOING UP BECAUSE THE WISCONSIN BASED COMPANY THAT MAQUOKETA BUYS WHOLESALE ELECTRIC POWER FROM WILL BE RAISING THEIR RATES. FUEL COSTS ARE ONE REASON FOR THE INCREASE. FOR MAQUOKETA RESIDENTS, THIS WILL BE THEIR FIRST INCREASE
IN ABOUT 5 YEARS.

LOUISE McALLISTER, AGE 78, OF DUBUQUE DIED TUESDAY. SURVIVORS INCLUDE
3 BROTHERS, JOHN AND GEORGE RONEK OF MAQUOKETA AND DALE KENNICKER OF DELMAR.

PHIL KONRARDY, AGE 44, OF TYLER, TEXAS AND FORMERLY OF MAQUOKETA, DIED WEDNESDAY FROM INJURIES IN A MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT ON OCTOBER 18TH.
SERVICES AND BURIAL WILL BE IN TYLER.

MAQUOKETA HAD JUST UNDER 3 INCHES OF RAIN IN OCTOBER.
LAST NOVEMBER, WE HAD NO RAIN, BUT AN INCH OF SNOW ON NOVEMBER 21ST.

HAVE A NICE WEEKEND.

THIS IS A NEW NEON SIGN IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA. I LIKE IT! THIS IS THE LIQUOR STORE THAT WAS J-R WINE AND SPIRITS, OWNED BY THE ROSENBERGS.
IT IS LOCATED NEXT TO THE BUILDING THAT FOR MANY YEARS WAS ROSENBERG AUTO SUPPLY. CLICK-ON THIS PHOTO TO ENLARGE, OR TWICE TO MAKE IT EVEN LARGER. THE BUSINESS IS NOW OWNED AND OPERATED BY RON READ OF
MAQUOKETA. HIS MANAGER IS TAMMY KIRGAN. NICE STORE! OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK AND EVENINGS AND HAS A DRIVE-UP WINDOW TOO. THE SIGN REALLY SHOWS UP AT NIGHT. DRIVE BY SOMETIME AND TAKE A LOOK. GOOD TO HAVE
SOMETHING ADDED AND POSITIVE DOWNTOWN FOR A CHANGE. IT IS RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET FROM PERXACTLY BAR AND GRILL, WHERE A LOT OF
REDECORATING HAS TAKEN PLACE RECENTLY , INSIDE AND OUT. I HAD A GREAT CHEESEBURGER THERE LAST NIGHT. X MARKS THE SPOT.

NICE FALL DAY IN MAQUOKETA.

SUNNY AND 54.

THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL COULD NOT AGREE ON WHO TO APPOINT AS THE FIRST WARD COUNCIL MEMBER AT THEIR MEETING LAST NIGHT. THERE WERE 5 PEOPLE WHO PUT IN THEIR NAME.
FOUR GAVE A SHORT SPEECH. ED TURNEY DID NOT WISH TO SPEAK. FIRST, A VOTE WAS MADE TO APPOINT KIM GALLOWAY AND IT ENDED UP A 3 TO 3 TIE. THEN, A MOTION WAS MADE TO APPOINT LORI CROUCH AND IT ALSO RESULTED IN A 3 TO 3 TIE. THERE WERE NO OTHER MOTIONS MADE. THE COUNCIL DECIDED TO HAVE A SPECIAL MEETING AT 5 NEXT MONDAY AFTERNOON AND IF THEY CAN'T AGREE ON A PERSON THEN, IT MAY END UP GOING TO A SPECIAL
ELECTION WHICH WILL COST SOME MONEY, AND MAY NOT HAPPEN FOR MONTHS. DELAYS.

IT WAS VERY FOGGY THIS MORNING, UNTIL 10 A.M. OR SO...AND COLD, ABOUT 39.
THEN THE SUN CAME OUT AND NOW IT IS A BEAUTIFUL FALL DAY, WITH THE HIGH EXPECTED TO BE IN THE MID 50'S AND TOMORROW, EVEN NICER.

THE MAQUOKETA CARDINALS PLAYED A GOOD GAME LAST NIGHT AGAINST
RATED MARION, BUT ENDED UP LOOSING 36 TO 22.

SORRY TO REPORT THAT A LONGTIME MAQUOKETA BUSINESS IS CLOSING.
JAKE BICKFORD HAS DECIDED TO RETIRE AND WILL START A "QUITTING
BUSINESS" SALE NEXT THURSDAY. THE SIGN WENT UP IN THE WINDOW
AT NOON TODAY. AT ONE TIME, THERE WERE 3 MEN'S CLOTHING STORES.
JACK HAS WORKED AT THE STORE ABOUT 50 YEARS AND BOUGHT IT FROM
BILL MOLER ABOUT 25 YEARS AGO. BILL MOLER (WHO DIED LAST YEAR) BOUGHT THE B & B CLOTHING STORE AT THAT LOCATION IN 1958, SHORTLY BEFORE KMAQ WENT ON THE AIR. I'M NOT SURE HOW LONG IT HAD BEEN A CLOTHING STORE
BEFORE MOLER BOUGHT IT. SO...I'M GUESSING THERE HAS BEEN A MEN'S STORE AT THAT LOCATION A GOOD 60 YEARS. JAKE IS A YEAR YOUNGER THAN ME ( HE'S 68) AND IS NOW LOOKING FORWARD TO RETIREMENT. HIS WIFE, JUDY, RETIRED FROM TEACHING 4 YEARS AGO. THEY HAVE CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN IN INDIANA,WISCONSIN AND IOWA CITY AND WILL BE ABLE TO MAKE MORE TRIPS TO SEE THEM. AND JAKE LOVES SPORTS, AND PARTICIPATES IN BOWLING AND GOLF.
JAKE GOES BACK EVEN LONGER THAN 50 YEARS DOWNTOWN. WHILE IN HIGH
SCHOOL, HE WORKED FOR NIC JACOB'S POPULAR MEAT MARKET AND GROCERY STORE. AGAIN THE BIG SALE STARTS NEXT WEEK AND WILL PROBABLY
RUN FOR SEVERAL WEEKS. THERE IS A BIG INVENTORY TO SELL, AS JAKE ALWAYS KEPT A WELL-STOCKED STORE. SO, AFTER CHRISTMAS, THERE WILL BE ANOTHER EMPTY STOREFRONT DOWNTOWN. BUT, SOMEONE IN DOING SOME PAINTING
IN AN EMPTY STORE RIGHT NOW, SO MAYBE A NEW ONE WILL OPEN SOON.
THE BUILDING JAKE'S STORE IS LOCATED IN DOWNTOWN IS OWNED BY DARLENE
KIRCHOFF. IN THE MONTHS AHEAD, I AND A LOT OF OTHER MEN IN MAQUOKETA WILL BE LOOKING FOR ANOTHER PLACE TO BUY SUITS, SPORTCOATS, SHIRTS AND TIES, ETC. I'VE BOUGHT MOST OF MY CLOTHES OVER THE YEARS THERE. AND
BILL MOLER'S WAS A KMAQ ADVERTISER 50 YEARS AGO WHEN WE WENT ON-THE-AIR AND HAS BEEN A WEEKLY ADVERTISER EVER SINCE. GOOD LUCK TO JAKE!
HOPE HE AND JUDY HAVE A LONG, HAPPY RETIREMENT.

HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND AND WEEK AHEAD.

RAINY AND COLD TODAY...HIGH IN 40'S.
TOMORROW SHOULD BE MUCH NICER...AND SUNDAY TOO.

ANOTHER PERSON HAS INDICATED INTEREST IN THE OPENING ON THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL FROM THE FIRST WARD. KIM GALLOWAY. THAT BRINGS TO FIVE,THE NUMBER SO FAR ASKING TO BE CONSIDERED. THE APPOINTMENT IS EXPECTED TO BE MADE AT NEXT MONDAY'S MEETING.

THE MAQUOKETA COMMUNITY SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM IS DOING VERY WELL.
JERRY NELSON, DIRECTOR OF SUPPORT SERVICES, TOLD THE BOARD THIS WEEK
THEY SERVED 700 MEALS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL IN TWO SEPARATE DAYS LAST MONTH. HE SAID THAT IS QUITE A FEAT CONSIDERING THERE ARE 608 STUDENTS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL. NELSON SAID NO OTHER HIGH SCHOOL IN THE COUNTRY IS SUPPORTED BY OVER 90 PERCENT USE. HE ATTRIBUTES SOME OF IT TO A CLOSED CAMPUS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL AND A NEW LARGER CAFETERIA. HE SAID THE STUDENTS EAT IN FOUR SHIFTS AND IT HAS BECOME MORE OF A SOCIAL ATMOSPHER BECAUSE THERE'S MORE ROOM.

AS OF MID WEEK THIS WEEK, THE JACKSON COUNTY AUDITOR'S OFFICE HAD SEEN 2,060 ABSENTEE BALLOT REQUESTS. THEY ARE AVERAGING ABOUT 100 A DAY IN THE AUDITOR'S OFFICE. THERE WERE 3,000 ABSENTEE BALLOTS FOR THE LAST GENERAL ELECTION. SO, THIS YEAR SHOULD BEAT THAT.'

SERVICES ARE PENDING AT THE CARSON AND SOON FUNERAL HOME FOR EULANE L. WALKER, AGE 92, OF MAQUOKETA, WHO DIED THIS MORNING AT THE LOCAL HOSPITAL.

WILL HAVE A REPORT TOMORROW MORNING ON THE MAQUOKETA FOOTBALL SCORE TONIGHT.

UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED SPENDING $7,700 FOR A STUDY THAT WILL NEED TO BE DONE BEFORE THE CITY CAN APPLY FOR A BROWNFIELD GRANT TO HELP CLEAN-UP

A LITTLE RAIN THIS MORNING AND CLOUDY, BREEZY AND COOL TODAY WITH TEMPERATURERS ONLY IN THE 40'S.

FOUR PEOPLE HAVE FILED PAPERS AT MAQUOKETA CITY HALL TO BE APPOINTED
THIS MONDAY NIGHT AS FIRST WARD COUNCIL MEMBER.
THE COUNCIL HAS INDICATED THEY PLAN TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT MONDAY NIGHT TO FILL THE UNEXPIRED TERM OF MATT WINEGAR WHO RESIGNED LAST MONTH BECAUSE HE AND HIS FAMILY MOVED OUT OF THE CITY.
THOSE INDICATING INTEREST ARE: ED TURNEY, LORI CROUCH, DAVE WIERSMA,
AND DEB WILHELM. THE DEADLINE TO SUBMIT YOUR NAME IS THIS FRIDAY AT 4 P.M.

NICK McCUTCHEON, JUST NORTHWEST OF MAQUOKETA REPORTED YESTERDAY AFTERNOON THAT SOMEONE TRIED TO BREAK INTO HIS NEW HOME. HE SAID TWO PEOPLE KICKED IN THE DOOR AND TOOK OFF. NO ONE WAS APPREHENDED.

MIKE STEWART OF MINNEAPOLIS SPOKE AT ROTARY TODAY. HE IS PART OWNER OF A LARGE LAW FIRM AND HIS WORK INVOLVES WORKING WITH FINANCIAL AND BANKING INTERESTS AND TALKED ABOUT THE CURRENT STOCK MARKET PROBLEMS.
HE IS THE SON OF ROGER AND JENNIE STEWART EAST OF MAQUOKETA AND HIS FATHER-IN-LAW IS RALPH KNICKREHM OF MAQUOKETA.

MIDAS OF MAQUKETA, A CITY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION
(3 COUNCIL MEMBERS ARE ON THE BOARD) HAS VOTED TO PURCHASE THE BUILDING ON SOUTH MAIN THAT BARELY ESCAPED BURNING TO THE GROUND DURING THE MAJOR FIRE. IT WAS GOING TO BE HOME TO THE SUB SANDWICH RESTAURANT. SOME DAMAGE FROM THE FIRE PREVENTED THAT FROM HAPPENING. COUNCILMAN NEIL MOREHEAD, ON CHANNEL 6 TV NEWS THE OTHER NIGHT, SAID IT WILL NOW BE TORN DOWN. DAVE WIERSMA WAS GOING TO OPEN A POOL HALL THERE. HE THOUGHT HE HAD AN AGREEMENT WITH THE TWO DUBUQUE OWNERS TO USE THE BUILDING FOR THAT PURPOSE. HE'S VERY DISAPPOINTED AND THERE WILL BE NO POOL HALL FOR KIDS. THE BUILDING DOES LOOK STRANGE ALL ALONE ON THAT CORNER AND IT HAS AN UGLY SLANTED SECOND ROOF (METAL) THAT WAS PUT OVER THE EXISTING ROOF THAT LEAKED BADLY. SO....ANOTHER CHAPTER IN THE BLEAK DOWNTOWN AREA. AND, MORE BAD NEWS IS COMING SOON. KEEP CHECKING HERE.
DON'T WORRY.....MAQUOKETA IS DOING WELL.....THE CRISIS IS ONLY IN PARTS OF THE DOWNTOWN AREA. AND WE HAVE SOME STREETS THAT NEED A LOT OF
WORK.

AND JACKSON COUNTY SUPERVISOR, ROTARIAN STEVE FLYNN, HAS A BAD TOOTH.

NICE DAY AGAIN....IN THE UPPER 60'S.
MORE GOOD WEATHER COMING.

A TRACTOR WAS DAMAGED BY FIRE IN RURAL MAQUOKETA THIS AFTERNOON.
FIREMEN WERE CALLED OUT AT 3 THIS AFTERNOON TO THE DONALD SCHEIBE
RESIDENCE AT 13738 HIGHWAY 64 WEST. BALDWIN FIREMEN WERE CALLED ALSO, BUT NOT NEEDED. A TRACTOR INSIDE THE SHED CAUGHT ON FIRE. MAQUOKETA FIREMEN SAY THE TRACTOR WAS DAMAGED BUT NOT THE SHED. FIREMEN QUICKLY PUT OUT THE FIRE AND WERE AT THE SCENE FOR LESS THAN AN HOUR.
FIREMEN SAID SHEIBE WAS WORKING ON THE TRACTOR WHEN IT CAUGHT ON FIRE.

THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL MAY CONSIDER SOME CHANGES AT THE CORNER OF MAIN AND SUMMIT, TO SPEED UP TRAFFIC, BUT NOT NOW AS THERE IS NO FUNDING FOR A PROJECT. AT MONDAY NIGHT'S COUNCIL MEETING, JULIE NEBEL FROM IIW
ENGINEERS PROVIDED SOME OPTIONS, WITH THE LOWEST OPTION COSTING $9,400 AND THE BIGGEST OPTION, $351,000. SHE SAID THERE HAVE NOT BEEN ENOUGH ACCIDENTS AT THE INTERSECTION FOR THE CITY TO QUALIFY FOR A SAFETY GRANT. THE HIGH PROPOSAL WOULD BE A "ROUND ABOUT".....A TYPE OF INTERSECTION FOUND NO WHERE IN MAQUOKETA. BOWMAN GAS STATION IS ON THAT CORNER AND COULD BE EFFECTED IF SOMETHING IS DONE.
BUSY TIME IS IN THE MORNING AND AFTERNOON WHEN SCHOOL
STARTS OR LETS OUT AT THE HIGH SCHOOL. MANY PEOPLE KNOW BETTER AND AVOID THE INTERSECTION. THE WAITING TIME IS SOMETIMES LONG FOR MAQUOKETA, BUT SHORT WHEN COMPARING THE TIME TO A BUSY INTERSECTION IN A LARGE CITY. MANY BELIEVE THEY HAVE MORE IMPORTANT PLACES TO
SPEND MONEY THESE DAYS, LIKE CLEANING UP THE DOWNTOWN FIRE MESS OR
MAKING MORE NEEDED STREET REPAIRS.
