A MAQUOKETA BUSINESSMAN PICKED THE MOST CORN DURING THE CORNHUSKING CONTEST HELD YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AT THE ANDREW JACKSON DEMONSTRATION FARM NORTHWEST OF ANDREW. ROSS RIVER PICKED 255 POUNDS TO BE NAMED THE TOP HUSKER. IN THE WOMEN'S DIVISION, A DEWITT WOMAN TOOK FIRST, PICKING 100 POUNDS.
IN THE 18 AND UNDER, BRANDON REED OF MAQUOKETA, PICKED 162 POUNDS, GOOD FOR 1ST PLACE. THERE WERE 24 CONTESTANTS, WHO PICKED A TOTAL OF 74 BUSHELS OF CORN. THE LAST CORN HUSKING CONTEST IN JACKSON COUNTY WAS HELD IN 1941. THE JACKSON COUNTY HORSE AND HARNESS ASSOCIATION AND THE JACKSON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY HOSTED THE EVEN YESTERDAY.
A MAQUOKETA MAN WHO HAD MATERIALS IN HIS HOME TO MAKE A BOMB HAS HAD HIS PROBATION REVOKED.
RANDY EDWARDS, AGE 41, WAS SENTENCED FRIDAY IN JACKSON COUNTY DISTRICT COURT TO 5 YEARS IN PRISON ON PROBATION VIOLATION.
THE OLD SALVATION ARMY CITADEL BUILDING WAS RE-DEDICATED YESTERDAY AFTERNOON IN CEREMONIES AT HORSESHOE POND PARK, WHERE IT WAS MOVED ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO, AFTER BEING IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA FOR AROUND 115 YEARS. THE BUILDING WAS THE FIRST SALVATION ARMY BUILDING TO BE BUILDT WEST OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER IN 1888. MORE THAN $60,000 IN DONATIONS HAS RESTORED THE BUILDING AND IT WILL BE USED NOW BY BOY SCOUTS AND THE COMMUNITY. BOTH THE MAIN FLOOR AND BASEMENT WERE REDONE.
THE UPSTAIRS HAS BEEN RENOVATED TO LOOK LIKE THE SALVATION ARMY CHURCH OF EARLY YEARS. THE DOWNSTAIRS IS PRIMARILY USED BY THE SCOUTS. IT HAS A KITCHEN. THE BUILDING HAS A NEW HEATING AND AIR-CONDITIONING SYSTEM.
MERLE KLOSSNER, AGE 41, OF MAQUOKETA, WAS CHARGED OCTOBER 14TH WITH POSSESSION OF DRUG PARAPHENALIA.
TWO MAQUOKETA RESIDENTS HAVE BEEN SENTENCED TO 5 YEARS IN PRISON ON CHARGES OF OPERATING A MOTOR VEHICLE WHILE INTOXICATED, 3RD OFFENSE. THEY ARE JERMOME FAIRCHILD, AGE 54. AND TERRY LEE RICKLEFS, AGE 34. BOTH ARRESTED IN SEPARATE INCIDENTS.
MARSHA MYERS OF 514 E. MAPLE STREET, WILL BE A WRITE-IN CANDIDATE FOR THE 3RD WARD COUNCIL POSITION IN MAQUOKETA. NO ON ELSE IS RUNNING FOR THE SEAT, BEING VACATED BY JIM BOLLMAN. SHE SAID HE STARTED TO GET INVOLVED IN THE COMMUNITY AFTER MOVING HERE IN DECEMBER 1998. SHE WORKS AT THE JACKSON COUNTY SENIOR CENTERR IN THE CHORE WORKER PROGRAM AND SHE'S A HOSTESS AT THE MAQUOKETA COUNTRY CLUB ON WEEKENDS. SHE IS DIVORCED AND HAS TWO CHILDREN AND A GRANDSON IN ILLINOIS.
