SUNNY AND IN 30'S TODAY.  NICE WEEKEND COMING UP TOO.

IN BASKETBALL, THE CALAMUS-WHEATLAND BOYS UPSET PRINCE OF PEACE OF
CLINTON LAST NIGHT AND WILL PLAY CENTRAL CITY IN THE SUBSTATE GAME
TOMORROW NIGHT AT CLINTON.    KMAQ WILL BROADCAST THE GAME.
THE WINNER GOES TO STATE.     CW IS 19 AND 5 AND CENTRAL CITY IS 13 AND 11.
LEIGHTON HEPKER WILL GO ON-THE-AIR AT 6:40 TOMORROW NIGHT ON 95.1 FM.

THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL WILL BE ASKED TO APPROVE A BID MONDAY NIGHT FOR CLEANING UP THE FIRE DEBRIS.       CITY MGR BRIAN WAGNER SAID THEY HAVE BEEN NEGOTIATING WITH THE STATE HISTORICAL PRESERVATION COMMISSION ABOUT THE WORK TO BE DONE AND THE COMMISSION IS INVOLVED BECAUSE THE FORMER SUE'S HALLMARK BUILDING WAS ON THE REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES.   WAGNER SAID TO MOVE THE PROJECT ALONG, THE COMMISSION AGREED TO REMOVE THE MIDAS BUILDING (STILL STANDING ON THE CORNER) OUT OF THE CLEAN-UP PROJECT FOR NOW.     THAT BUILDING SEEMED TO BE A HANG-UP WITH THE COMMISSION.     ONCE THE DEBRIS IS CLEANED UP, THE MIDAS BUILDING
WILL BE TORN DOWN AS A SEPARATE  PROJECT.   AND DURING DEBRIS REMOVAL,
THE MIDAS BUILDING WILL HAVE TO BE PROTECTED.          IF THEY LET THE BID
MONDAY NIGHT.......IT SHOULDN'T BE TOO LONG FOR WORK TO BEGIN.
I SHOULDN'T SAY THAT.

THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL PERSONNEL COMMITTEE MEMBERS WILL
RECOMMEND THAT THE CITY COUNCIL HIRE MAQUOKETA   ATTORNEY KEN
WRIGHT AS THE NEW CITY ATTORNEY.   THE COMMITTEE INTERVIEWED WRIGHT
AND STEVE KAHLER YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.     WRIGHT HAS A  LAW
OFFICE IN MAQUOKETA AND WORKS ALONE WHILE KAHLER IS PART OF THE
LAW FIRM, SCHOENTHALER, ROBERG, BARTELT AND KAHLER IN MAQUOKETA.
WRIGHT WAS CITY ATTORNEY 20 YEARS AGO.    THE COMMITTEE IS
RECOMMENDING WRIGHT BECAUSE OF HIS PREVIOUS CITY EXPERIENCE.
WRIGHT ASKED FOR A RETAINER OF $7,200 PER QUARTER AND KAHLER'S FIRM
IS ASKING FOR A RETAINER OF $30,000 A YEAR.

KATHY TILL IS RETIRING AFTER 26 YEARS WITH THE MAQUOKETA STATE BANK.
A RETIRMENT OPEN HOUSE IS THIS AFTERNOON FROM 2 UNTIL 4 IN THE LOBBY.
SHE HAS BEEN VERY ACTIVE IN ANDREW WHERE SHE LIVES, AS MAYOR AND
MORE.    I'M SURE SHE WILL CONTINUE DOING THINGS FOR HER TOWN.
ALSO ACTIVE IN THE COUNTY TOURISM ORGANIZATION.
AND CECIL BENTLEY HAS RETIRED AFTER 40 YEARS IN EDUCATION.    A RETIREMENT PARTY WILL BE HELD FROM 1:30 UNTIL 3:30 SUNDAY AFTERNOON AT THE
