WE HIT 90 YESTERDAY. THEN GOT A STORM LAST NIGHT. AN INCH OF RAIN.
COOL AND DRY FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK.

DR. STEVE BROMAN IS HOME FROM COLORADO, VISITING HIS DAD. THEY WERE AT COFFEE THE OTHER DAY. DR. BROMAN IS DOING FINE.

RON AND SHIRLEY MILLER WERE HOME FROM ARIZONA VISITING FRIENDS AND
RELATIVES. BOTH LOOKING GREAT. WELL...SHIRLEY OF COURSE LOOKS A LOT BETTER THAN RON. NICE OF THEM TO STOP IN AT KMAQ TO SAY HELLO AND VISIT FOR AWHILE.

BONNIE THEDE IS HOME VISITING TWO THEDE FAMILIES IN TOWN. SHE'S IN HER LOW 80'S....HAS AN RV AND HAS FUN TRAVELING THE COUNTRY. AFTER RAISING 12 KIDS...GOOD FOR HER. TROY (OWNER OF THE DECKER HOTEL) IS THE YOUNGEST.
AND YES...THERE IS THE OTHER BONNIE THEDE IN MAQUOKETA. SHE IS MARRIED TO TO TROY'S BROTHER TOM, AND THEY RUN THE BAKERY.

PHIL RASMUSSEN (RETIRED) IS IN TOWN VISITING HIS FOLKS, JERRY AND DOROTHY.
BEEN AT COFFEE WITH JERRY LAST COUPLE MORNINGS. LIVES ON THE WEST COAST.

THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL MET LAST NIGHT. THE COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH ADMINISTRATOR, FRANK FRIEBERG, TOLD THE COUNCIL ABOUT THE VIOLATIONS AN INSPECTOR FOUND AT THE CITY'S OLD OUTDOOR POOL. HIS FORMAL REPORT REQUIRES THE CITY TO RESPOND BY WEEK'S END AS TO WHAT CORRECTIONS THE CITY WILL TAKE OR CLOSE THE POOL. THE POOL IS OPEN NOW. THE MAYOR ASKED FRIEBERG TO ASK THE STATE FOR AN EXTENSION BEYOND THIS WEEK, ON WHAT THE CITY PLANS TO DO ABOUT THE VIOLATIONS. DURING A RECENT MAQUOKETA YMCA STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING, FRIEBERG ESTIMATED REPAIR COSTS AT $300,000. FRIEBERG PROVIDED A SLIDE SHOW FOR THE COUNCIL TO SEE LAST NIGHT, SHOWING PICTURES OF THE PROBLEMS AT THE POOL. THE POOL HAS BEEN OPEN THIS SUMMER, AFTER A $25,000 COMMUNITY FUND DRIVE TO SUPPLEMENT THE COST OF RUNNING IT THIS SUMMER. AND, FROM WHAT I AM HEARING,
(OR OBSERVING)....THE DAILY POOL ATTENDANCE HAS BEEN ON THE LOW SIDE. FOR NEXT YEAR, IF MAQUOKETA IS TO PROVIDE AN OUTDOOR POOL IN THE SUMMER, THE OPTIONS ARE: A/ REPAIR THE OLD POOL. B/ BUILD A NEW ONE ADJACENT TO THE YMCA BUILDING OR C/ DO NOTHING. IF DO NOTHING IS THE OPTION TAKEN, I THINK THEY SHOULD CONSIDER CLEARING OUT THE POOL AND BATHHOUSE AND MAKING ADDITIONAL PARKING FOR THE YOUTH CENTER (USED BY THE Y) AND FOR THE GOODENOW FOOTBALL FIELD ACROSS THE STREET, WHERE ADDITIONAL PARKING SPACES DURING FOOTBALL GAMES WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
THE FIRST OUT DOOR POOL (WHICH WAS LOCATED RIGHT NEXT TO THE BATHHOUSE) WAS CLEARED OUT AND FILLED IN LAST SUMMER. I WOULD THINK THAT ENTIRE CORNER WOULD PROVIDE QUITE A FEW PARKING SPACES.

JACKSON COUNTY ATTORNEY PHIL TABOR IS ONE OF THREE FINALISTS FOR THE ASSOCIATE JUDGE POSITION IN CLINTON COUNTY. TABOR WAS ONE OF 16 APPLICANTS. THE NEW JUDGE WILL REPLACE JUDGE ARLEN VAN ZEE WHO IS RETIRING IN OCTOBER.

THE MAQUOKETA SENTINEL PRESS SUFFERED A LIGHTNING STRIKE AND THIS CAUSED A BREAKDOWN. CONSEQUENTLY, DELIVERY OF THE WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 6TH SENTINEL-PRESS TO SUBSCRIBERS IN SOME AREAS OUTSIDE MAQUOKETA WILL BE DELAYED BY A DAY. MAQUOKETA SUBSCRIBERS WILL RECEIVE THEIR PAPERS WEDNESDAY AS USUAL.

THE AUCTION HELD SUNDAY AFTERNOON AT THE OHNWARD FINE ARTS CENTER IN MAQUOKETA, RAISED OVER $10,000 FOR OHNWARD. A PAINTING BY ROSE
FRANTZEN BROUGHT THE HIGHEST BID, OVER $3,000.

THANKS FOR CHECKING IN. SEE THE PHOTO BELOW THAT I TOOK LAST NIGHT.

YES, SOME WORK IS BEING DONE AT THE SCENE OF JANUARY'S FIRE IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA. THIS IS THE ATIENZA DENTAL BUILDING. THE SOUTH WALL WAS
EXTENSIVELY DAMAGED BY THE FIRE AND THE ROOF. AS YOU CAN SEE, THERE IS NOW A BRAND NEW WALL, FINISHED OFF TO MATCH THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING.
THE ROOF HAS BEEN REPLACED AND NOW INTERIOR WORK IS BEING DONE.
NOTE, THEY HAD TO HAUL AWAY ABOUT A 10 FOOT WIDE SWATH OF DEBRIS TO WORK ON THE WALL. YOU CAN'T SEE IT, BUT TO THE RIGHT, SOUTH, IS THE
BIG MESS. PEOPLE ARE GETTING ANGRY ABOUT NOTHING BEING DONE.
THE MAJOR PHARMACY RETAIL BUILDING PROPOSED FOR DOWNTOWN, IS NOW ONLY A POSSIBILITY AND A FINAL DECISION HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL THIS FALL. THE COST TO HAUL AWAY THE RUINS WILL BE COSTLY....A HALF TO A MILLION DOLLARS. THE CITY DOES NOT OWN THE BUILDINGS AND THEREFORE IS NOT RESPONSIBLE. KEEP TUNED.
ANYWAY, WHAT HAS BEEN DONE, AS YOU SEE ABOVE, LOOKS NICE.
