YES..THE CELEBRATION IS OVER OF MAQUOKETA'S 175TH ANNIVERSARY.
BUT, IN KEEPING WITH THE ANNIVERSARY THEME, RECENTLY AT A
HISTORICAL SOCIETY BROWN BAG LUNCH THEY TALKED ABOUT A MAN WHO
IS PERHAPS MOST RESPONSIBLE FOR "REPORTING" THE HAPPENINGS OF
THE TIMES. HIS NAME WAS ANSON WILSON, WHO CAME TO MAQUOKETA IN 1839, AT THE AGE OF 22. WHEN HE CAME, THE ONLY CABIN IN THE AREA WAS THAT OF J.E. GOODENOW. HE WORKED FOR GOODENOW UNTIL HE COULD SAVE ENOUGH TO BUY A PIECE OF LAND AND BUILD HIS OWN
CABIN. HE DUG THE FIRST WELL IN MAQUOKETAA AND EVENTUALLY BUILT
THE LIMESTONE HOME WHICH IS ON THE NATIONAL REGISTER AND STILL
STANDS SOUTH OF TOWN, WHERE MARY ANN MICHELS NOW LIVES.
HE LIVED HIS ENTIRE LIFE HERE, INTO HIS 90'S AND HAD A KEEN MEMORY.
MUCH OF THE RECORDED HISTORY OF MAQUOKETA CAME FROM HIS AS HE WATCHED THE AREA GROW AND CHANGE FOR 7 DECADES.
ABBY EHLERS, 5-YEAR-OLD GRANDAUGHTER OF DENNIS AND PATTY
(REITER) JOHNSON, WENT TO THE STATE PEDAL PULL CONTEST IN MARSHALLTOWN ON SEPTEMBER 7TH AND WON HER AGE GROUP THERE AND NOW SHE WILL GO ON TO THE NATIONALS IN SOUTH DAKOTA ON SEPTEMBER 20 AND 21. CONGRATULATIONS TO ABBY AND GOOD LOOK
TO HER IN SOUTH DAKOTA. DONATIONS ARE BEING TAKEN TO PAY EXPENSES FOR HER TRIP THERE AND ANYONE THAT CARES TO GIVE A SMALL DONATION SHOULD CALL PATTY AT 563-652-4110.
SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION DAY IS TODAY. WE HAVE 3 CANDIDATES FOR 2 OPENINGS. TOMORROW, I WILL HAVE THE TWO WINNERS ON THIS
