IT IS RAINING HARD RIGHT NOW IN MAQUOKETA, AT 4 P.M. CLOUDY AFTERNOON.

OVER 160 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE ANNUAL MEETING OF THE JACKSON COUNTY FARM BUREAU LAST NIGHT AT THE THRESHER'S GROUNDS AT MILES.
SCOTT HINTGEN OF RURAL BELLEVUE WAS ELECTED THE NEW PRESIDENT, MOVING
UP FROM VICE-PRESIDENT. HE REPLACES SCOTT GENT OF MONMOUTH.
PAUL GERLACH WILL CONTINUE SERVING AS TREASURER AND KEVIN
CORNELIUS AS SECRETARY. THE GENERAL MEMBERSHIP APPROVED A DUES INCREASE FROM $40 TO $45 A YEAR. THERE ARE CURRENTLY 1,743 MEMBERS.

MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WILL BE GETTING LAPTOPS TO TAKE HOME
THIS FALL. THE ONE-TO-ONE INITIATIVE IS BEING PAID THROUGH PHYSICAL PLANT AND EQUIPMENT AND SALES TAX FUNDS. THE COST OF THE PROGRAM
IS $181,791 FOR 450 NETBOOKS, SOFTWARE AND CARRYING CASE. THE SCHOOL ALREADY HAS 150 AND 571 ARE NEEDED. THEY WILL BE GIVEN OUT AROUND
EARLY NOVEMBER AND PARENTS WILL BE ASKED TO PURCHASE INSURANCE AT UP TO $45 A YEAR FOR THE LAPTOPS. THEY WILL BE EQUIPPED WITH SOFTWARE TO PREVENT STUDENTS FROM GOING TO IMPROPER WEBSITE.

AN 8 YEAR OLD GIRL ESCAPED INJURY WHEN A CAR BACKED INTO HER WHILE
SHW WAS ON A BICYCLE YESTERDAY MORNING. THE GIRL WAS KISHA BARR OF
MAQUOKETA. THE DRIVER WAS MELISSA STERBENZ, AGE 41, OF MAQUOKETA.
THE AMBULANCE WAS CALLED, BUT THE MOTJER OF THE GIRL DECLINED
TAKING THE GIRL TO THE HOSPITAL. STERBENZ WAS CHARGED WITH UNSAFE BACKING. THIS ACCIDENT HAPPENED AT THE CORNER OF APPLE AND DECKER STREETS AT 11:30 YESTERDAY MORNING.

THE BERNARD PICNIC IS THIS SATURDAY AND A PARADE AT 11 WILL AGAIN

THE MAQUOKETA ROTARY CLUB WILL BE SELLING DUCKS THIS SATURDAY AT THE
FAREWAY STORE AND AT WAL MART. THE DUCK RACE IS NEXT TUESDAY NIGHT
AT 6 AT THE YMCA AND WILL BE BROADCAST ON KMAQ. THE FIRST PLACE
DUCK PAYS $500 AND THE NEXT 9 FINISHERS, $100 EACH. DUCKS ARE ALSO ON SALE HERE AT KMAQ.

THE FATHER'S DAY BREAKFAST IS THIS SUNDAY MORNING AT THE AIRPORT,
SPONSORED BY THE ROTARY. ROTARIAN WILL RENNER IN CHARGE. AND
ALL THE PANCAKES AND EXTRAS WILL BE PREPARED BY THE PRO....CHRIS
PANCAKES WHO GOES ALL OVER IOWA DOING PANCAKE EVENTS. AIRPLANE AND HELICOPTER RIDES WILL BE AVAILABLE AND THERE WILL BE A CHARGE FOR
THOSE.

ON WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29TH, THE ROTARY SENIOR CITIZEN FREE BAND CONCERT (JAY KAHN AND HIS VOLUNTEER BAND MEMBERS FROM THE AREA) AND FREE ICE CREAM AND CAKE SOCIAL WILL START AT 6. BAND MUSIC SHORTLY AFTER. COME EARLY AT 5:30 FOR FREE TRIVIA GAMES AND PRIZES. PASS THE WORD TO YOUR GRANDPARENTS. THE ROTARY HAS BEEN DOING THIS SINCE 1976 AND ROTARIAN TED MAZE HAS HEADED THE PROJECT UP ALMOST THAT LONG. IT IS HELD AT THE FAIRGROUNDS OPEN AIR SHELTER AND BRING LAWNCHAIRS.
