AND IT WON'T GET BETTER UNTIL FRIDAY.
A TWO CAR ACCIDENT IN MAQUOKETA YESTERDAY AND INVESTIGATED
BY POLICE OFFICER MIKE OWEN. AT THE INTERSECTION OF PLATT AND 2ND STREETS, DARWIN LYON, AGE 82, OF 817 SOUTH MAIN STREET IN MAQUOKETA, PULLED IN FRONT OF A VEHICLE DRIVEN BY TYREE TURMAN, AGE 40, OF OXFORD JUNCTION. ABOUT $1,000 DAMAGE TO TURMAN'S
2000 FORD AND $2,500 DAMAGE TO LYON'S 2005 DODGE VAN. DARWIN LION
WAS CHARGED WITH FAILURE TO YIELD UPON ENTERING A HIGHWAY.
NO INJURIES IN THE ACCIDENT.
I WAS UP TO VISIT ANNOUNCER RUSTY LIETZ AT THE HOSPITAL ONE AFTERNOON IN MARCH, I HAD NOT BEEN UP THERE IN A LONG TIME EXCEPT TO GET A BLOOD TEST IN THE LAB. I WAS IMPRESSED AT HOW NICE IT LOOKED, VERY CLEAN, SPACIOUS, AND NOT VERY BUSY. I THINK RUSTY AND ONE OR TWO OTHER PERSONS WERE OVERNIGHT PATIENTS.
MANY PATIENTS COME TO THE HOSPITAL ON OWN OR BY AMBULANCE,
ARE CHECKED OVER AND IF ANYTHING SERIOUS, ARE TRANSPORTED DOWN TO GENESIS IN DAVENPORT. ANYWAY, LAST NIGHT THE HOSPITAL BOARD
HAD THEIR REGULAR MEETING AND HEARD FROM TWO FIRMS, INVISION
ARCHITECTS AND KJWW ENGINEERING. THEY RECENTLY COMPLETED
A SIGHT AND FACILITIES CONDITION ASSESSMENT UPDATE. IT COVERED
THE 1949 ORIGINAL HOSPITAL, AND THE 1966, 1979, 2001 AND 2004 ADDITIONS. A TOTAL OF AROUND 131,000 SQUARE FEET. AND
THE REPORT INDICATES OVERALL CONDITIONS OF THE HOSPITAL, DUE
TO ADVANCED AGE, ARE POOR. A TOTAL OF OVER $15-MILLION DOLLARS
IS THE ESTIMATE TO ALLEVIATE THE PROBLEMS. AND THE REPORT
SUMMARY CONCLUDED "BUILDING REPLACEMENT" SHOULD BE CONSIDERED.
NO COST ESTIMATE ON A NEW HOSPITAL. WE WILL BE HEARING MORE ABOUT THE HOSPITAL SITUATION IN THE MONTHS AHEAD.
IN TODAY'S MAQUOKETA SENTINEL-PRESS, THERE IS A STORY ON
THE JACKSON COUNTY JAIL IN MAQUOKETA. GUESS IT WILL NEED TO
BE REPLACED SOON. CLINTON COUNTY HAS A BOND ISSUE VOTE FOR
A NEW JAIL ($22-MILLION) IN MAY.
MAQUOKETA EARLIER THIS MONTH HAD A SCHOOL DISTRICT BOND ISSUE ELECTION (FOR $14-MILLION) THAT WAS DEFEATED. ANOTHER SCALED-DOWN ELECTION WILL PROBABLY COME LATER THIS YEAR.
WE HAVE A $4 MILLION DOWNTOWN STREET PROJECT UNDERWAY NOW.... AND IN THE WORKS, A $1-MILLION PROJECT AT THE MAQUOKETA AIRPORT.
ADD THIS ALL UP AND IT LOOKS LIKE THE TIMBER CITY WILL BE SPENDING
A LOT OF MONEY, SOME FREE, SOME FROM TAXES.
