JACKSON COUNTY SHERIFF DEPUTIES AND THE DEPARTMENT OF CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION ARE STILL INVESTIGATING A SHOOTING WHICH HAPPENED IN THE EARLY MORNING HOURS OF SEPTEMBER 25TH, NEAR MAQUOKETA. DEPUTY STEVE SCHROEDER SAID A 21 YEAR OLD MALE WAS SHOT IN THE SHOULDER WHILE ON 233RD AVENUE, OR THE SEVEN HILLS ROAD, AT 2:56 A.M SEPTEMBER 25TH. THE INJURIES WERE NOT LIFE TREATENING. THE MAN WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL HERE IN MAQUOKETA AND LATER TRANSFERRED TO UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS IN IOWA CITY. DEPUTY SCHROEDER DECLINED TO RELEASE THE VICTIM'S NAME. HE ESTIMATED THE INVESTIGATION WOULD BE COMPLETED BY HIS OFFICE AND THE DCI SOMETIME IN THE NEXT TWO WEEKS AND FURTHER DETAILS ARE EXPECTED TO BE RELEASED AT THAT TIME.
AT THE CITY COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT, A DAVENPORT DEVELOPER ASKED THE CITY FOR FINANCIAL HELP TO RENOVATE THE HISTORIC HURST HOTEL IN MAQUOKETA. CHRIS ALES OF SIGNATURE HOLDING OF DAVENPORT IS NOT NEW TO THE CITY. HIS GROUP OWNS THE NEW SENIOR APARTMENT COMPLEX NEXT TO CITY HALL, OPENED A COUPLE YEARS AGO. NOW HE PLANS TO SPEND $3 MILLION DOLLARS TO RE-DO THE HURST AND INCLUDE A NEW ELEVATOR AND THAT WOULD INCLUDE 22 APARMENTS FOR LOW TO MODERATE INCOME RENTERS. HE CURRENTLY HAS A $200,000 LOAN WITH THE CITY USED FOR THE APARTMENTS ADJACENT TO CITY HALL. THE LOAN IS DUE TO BE PAID OFF IN DECEMBER 2004. HE WOULD LIKE THE CITY TO RE-LOAN ..OR ROLL OVER THAT LOAN...FOR A 15-YEAR PERIOD.
HE SAID THE NEW APARTMENT UNITS ARE FILLED ALONG SIDE CITY HALL AND THAT THERE IS A WAITING LIST AND HE BELIEVES THERE WILL ALSO BE RENTERS FOR THE HURST HOTEL APARTMENTS.

A WELL KNOWN, LONGTIME FLOWER SHOP OWNER, DIED THIS MORNING IN MAQUOEKTA AT HER HOME. SERVICES ARE PENDING AT THE CARSON AND SON FUNERAL HOME FOR ANITA MEADE, AGE 71. SHE AND HER LATE HUSBAND RONALD, ESTABLISHED RONANN'S FLORAL SHOW IN MAQUOEKTA IN THE EARLY 50'S ON WEST PLATT STREET.
35 YEAR OLD DEBORAH MCCONCHIE OF MAQUOKETA WAS CHARGED WITH DOMESTIC ASSAULT. MAQUOKETA POLICE OFFICER PAT FIER SAID MCCONCHIE FOUND HER BOYFRIEND WHO HAS LIVED WITH HER FOR L4 YEARS IN HER BED AT 11:45 MONDAY NIGHT AT 309 EAST PLEASANT STREET. SHE BEGAN YELLING AT HIM AND PUSHING HIM OUT OF BED. SHE THREW A 9-INCH CAST IRON SKILLET AT HIM, CAUSING SCRATCHES ON HIS FOOT. POLICE SAY HE TESTED POSITIVE FOR FOR ALCHOHOL CONSUMPTION.
