YESTERDAY'S HIGH WAS 34. THE LOW THIS MORNING WAS 33. THE TEMPERATURE, UNDER MOSTLY CLOUDY SKIES, DROPPED A LITTLE DURING
THE DAY AND NOW, LATE AFTERNOON, IS AT 27. DOWN TO 13 TONIGHT.
TOMORROW SUNNY, AND HIGH OF 26.
BECAUSE OF ICE ON COUNTY ROADS, THE START OF SCHOOL WAS DELAYED
2 HOURS THIS MORNING AND 3 OR 4 DISTRICTS CALLED OFF SCHOOL TODAY
BECAUSE OF THE ROADS.

MAQUOKETA VOLUNTEER FIREMAN BRYAN HAFNER WAS GIVEN THE MAQUOKETA FIREFIGHTERS'S MEMORIAL AWARD THIS MONTH AT THE FIREMEN'S ANNUAL BANQUET. HE IS THE DEPARTMENT'S FIRE PREVENTION
OFFICER AND THE ANNUAL AWARD IS GIVEN FOR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS AND SERVICE ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY.
RECIPIENTS ARE CHOSEN BY A SECRET BALLOT BY MEMBERS OF THE
FIRE DEPARTMENT.
ALSO AT THE BANQUET: CAPT. JAMES CONNOLLY AND CAPT. PETE SCHUELLER RECEIVED PLAQUES FOR 10 YEARS OF SERVICE.
BOB EARLES AND JIM CURRENT WERE RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR VOLUNTEER WORK IN FRAMING A MAP OF THE MAQUOKETA FIRE DEISTRICT AND HANGING IT IN THE FIRE STATION.
FIRE CHIEF MARK BECK GAVE THE 2011 ANNUAL REPORT SAYING THE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED TO 53 FIRE CALLS, DOWN FROM 60 CALLS IN 2010 AND 66 CALLS IN 2009. AND HE NOTED THAT THE DEPARTMENT TOOK DELIVERY OF A NEW TANKER TRUCK, WHICH REPLACED AN OLDER MODEL.
THEY ALSO PUT INTO SERVICE, A TRUCK FOR FIGHTING BRUSH FIRES. IT WAS A TRUCK PREVIOUSLY USED BY THE CITY WATER DEPARTMENT.
THE DEPARTMENT ALSO PURCHASED NEW HELMETS AT A COST OF $7,000 AND
NEW GLOVES AT A COST OF $2,500.
MARK BECK WAS RECENTLY RE-ELECTED FIRE CHIEF, A POSITION HE HAS HELD SINCE 1998.
OTHER OFFICERS ARE: AL MUHLHAUSEN, ASST. CHIEF....BRENT PAULS, DEPUTY CHIEF....AND JIM CONNOLLY, PETE SCHUELLER AND CRAIG MUHLHAUSEN, CAPTAINS.
ALSO, MATT TRANEL, LIEUTENANT.....BOB LANE JR. SAFETY OFFICER AND
JEFF MORITZ, TRAINING OFFICE.

THE JOHN BYERS INVITATIONAL WRESTLING TOURNAMENT WAS HELD
SATURDAY AT WYOMING, WITH ELEVEN TEAMS IN THE FIELD.
NORTH LINN FINISHED FIRST, MONTICELLO SECOND, MIDLAND THIRD, AND MAQUOKETA 4TH. GETTTING A SECOND FOR THE CARDINALS:
CHRISTIAN FLENKER....HAVEN MILLER....AND JUSTIN ZIEMET....
AND GETTING A 3RD: LOGAN MAYBERRY....DALLAS DURKOP....AND
ALEX EGGERS.

THE MAQUOKETA GIRLS AND BOYS BASKETBALL TEAMS PLAY AT DEWITT
THIS THURSDAY NIGHT AND BOTH GAMES WILL BE BROADCAST ON
KMAQ-FM AND OUR INTERNET SITE, BY MATT CLARK, STARTING AT 5:50 P.M.
