THE JACKSON COUNTY HORSE AND HARNESS ASSOCIATION HAD THEIR ANNUAL
"BY-HAND" CORN PICKING CONTEST YESTERDAY AT THE COUNTY FARM LOCATED
A COUPLE MILES NORTH OF ANDREW. YEARS AGO THEY WOULD BE BIG EVENTS
IN THE MIDWEST AND THERE ARE STILL SOME BIG CONTESTS AROUND. THE
JACKSON COUNTY ONE IS A SMALL-SCALE ONE ON A FEW ACRES. PIONEER
DEALER MIKE DULANEY GAVE THE SEED CORN THIS SPRING FOR THE PLOT.
THERE WERE FOUR DIVISIONS: DELBERT JACKSON WON THE SENIOR DIVISION, PICKING 277 POUNDS IN 20 MINUTES. BOB HANKEMEIER TOOK SECOND AND DAVID SIEVERDING THIRD. IN THE MEN'S DIVISION, SKOTT GENT, FIRST WITH 360 POUNDS
THE BEST OF THE DAY. SHAWN GRUHN TOOK SECOND, BRAD SCHECKEL THIRD,
AND JEFF GRUHN FOURTH. THE WOMEN'S DIVISION WON BY LAURINE GRUHN, PICKING 302 POUNDS. ANGIE STORIJOHNANN TOOK SECOND. THE JUNIOR
DIVISION WINNERS LISTED UNDER PHOTO BELOW THIS ONE. THE EVENT WAS POSTPONED FROM A COUPLE WEEKS AGO BECAUSE OF BAD WEATHER.
YESTERDAY'S WEATHER WAS WARM AND PERFECT. A COUPLE MORE PHOTOS

SCHOOL, SON OF MR. AND MRS. SCOTT GENT. HE WAS THE FIRST TO COMPETE
YESTERDAY. SHAWN GRUHN, OF SABULA, A STUDENT AT SCOTT COMMUNITY COLLEGE, (PARENTS ARE THE EUGENE GRUHN'S) GUIDES THE TEAM OF
HORSES DOWN THE ROWS OF CORN AS FAST AS NEEDED BY THE CORN PICKER.
THE WAGON IS OWNED BY DON SCHECKEL OF RURAL BELLEVUE. HE HAS 3 OF THE WAGONS AND THEY WERE ALL USED YESTERDAY. CALE TOOK FIRST PLACE
IN THE JUNIOR DIVISION, PICKING 177 POUNDS OF CORN IN 20 MINUTES. ALSO IN THAT DIVISION, DYLAN GRUHN TOOK SECOND AND JUSTIN GRUHN, THIRD.
