WE WERE THERE LATE SATURDAY AFTERNOON. I WAS ANXIOUS TO SEE
WHAT THE NEW BUILDING LOOKED LIKE INSIDE. CALKIN SQUARE IS
A BLOCK SQUARE IN DOWNTOWN WYOMING, NAMED AFTER PIONEER DR.
CALKIN. JUST TO THE NORTH OF THIS COMMUNITY BUILDING IS THE
DOCTOR'S ORIGINAL TINY OFFICE BUILDING, NEXT TO HIS LATER GRAND
OLD HOME. ALL RESTORED. ALL GIVEN TO THE COMMUNITY BY SOME
KIND OF TRUST. AND THERE IS NEW MONEY EVERY YEAR AND IT ONLY
CAN BE SPENT INSIDE THE FENCE OF THE COMPLEX. NEXT YEAR, A
GAZEBO IS PLANNED. THE MAYO CLINIC FOUNDATION IS ALSO A BIG
BENEFACTOR OF THE ESTATE. WENT UP TO BUY DINNER FOR NANCY AND I AND IT WAS FREE. A BAND FROM DUBUQUE PLAYED IN THE EVENING BUT WE DIDN'T STAY FOR IT. WHAT A GREAT THING FOR THE SMALL
TOWN OF WYOMING. TALKED WITH NEW MAYOR KEITH SOMMERVILLE (FORMER 70'S KMAQ SALESMAN) AND HE IS ON THE LOCAL CALKIN BOARD AND SAYS MORE WILL BE COMING EVERY YEAR. SO, NEXT TIME YOU
DRIVE THROUGH THE CHRISTMAS CITY, TAKE NOTICE. HOPEFULLY
YOU WILL ALSO TOUR THE HOME SOMETIME. THE CARRIAGE WAGON
IN THE LOFT OF THE BUILDING I WAS TOLD IS A VELIE....FROM SAME COMPANY THAT PRODUCED THE FAMOUS CAR LATER.
THANKS TO OUR MANY LISTENERS IN WYOMING, IOWA.
