WE SPENT AN HOUR-PLUS THIS AFTERNOON JOINING LOTS OF OTHER
VISITORS AT THE PEARSON CENTER ON THE JACKSON COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS WATCHING WOOD CARVING AND LOOKING AT OVER 400
CARVINGS THIS YEAR, FROM AS FAR AWAY ENGLAND.  MOST WERE ENTERED IN THE COMPETITION AND SOME ARE FOR SALE.   PRICES RANGE FROM $50 TO $16,000.   SOME ENTRIES WERE SHIPPED IN TO BE JUDGED.     ONE MAN HERE FOR FIRST TIME FROM UTAH SAID HE GOES TO A SHOW WEST OF  UTAH FOR THE WESTERN PART OF THE COUNTRY,  BUT THIS ONE IS BIGGER AND BETTER.   ALSO HERE THIS WEEK, SOMEONE FROM THE STATE OF VIRGINIA.
THIS IS CAROL LEAVY FROM CLINTON,  IOWA AND PRESIDENT OF THE      AFFILIATED WOODCARVERS OF AMERICA.   IT IS HER ORGANIZATION THAT SPONSORS THE INTERNATIONAL WOODCARVERS CONFERENCE GOING ON ALL THIS WEEK IN MAQUOKETA.    THIS IS THE 5TH YEAR FOR THE SHOW IN MAQUOKETA.   NEXT YEAR WILL BE THEIR 50TH ANNIVERSARY AND IT AGAIN WILL BE HELD IN MAQUOKETA AND CAROL SAYS IT WILL BE A SPECIAL CONFERENCE TO CELEBRATE.    CAROL HAS BEEN A CARVER FOR 9 YEARS

NOTE THE BLACK AND WHITE OLD PHOTO IN LOWER LEFT CORNER.   THAT
IS A PHOTO OF HER GRANDMOTHER AND STEP GRANDFATHER.    SHE

A REAL WINNER TO ME, BUT IT GOT 4TH PLACE.

MOST OF THE CARVERS ARE RETIRED SENIORS.   BUT, THERE ARE ALL
AGES, INCLUDING THE 15 YEARS OLD BELOW FROM ILLINOIS.   HIS DAD
IS A CARVER AND HE HAS A YOUNGER BROTHER THAT ALSO CARVES.

PEARSON CENTER IS FILLED.   AND IS DIVIDE INTO THREE AREAS.    WHEN
YOU COME IN THE MAIN ENTRANCE, ON DISPLAY ARE THE COMPLETED

IS ONE TABLE OR MORE OF ALL BIRDS.   ANOTHER ALL FISH.    ANOTHER
TABLE WITH ALL THE TOP WINNERS.   ETC. ETC.
THEN ANOTHER PART OF THE BUILDING IS FOR THE CARVERS DOING
SOME CARVING.   AND STILL ANOTHER PART OF BUILLDING, BOOTHS THAT
ARE SELLING CARVING TOOLS, ETC. TO THE WOODCARVERS AT THE SHOW.

FIRST, SOME PHOTOS OF CARVERS AT WORK THIS AFTERNOON.

THESE ARE CARVINGS ON TABLE DONE THIS WEEK.    A "BUST" CARVING LIKE THIS CAN BE DONE IN A WEEKS TIME.
THE ABOVE ARE TAKING A LESS ON CARVING....BEGINNERS.

HERE'S A PHOTO OF A BOOTH THAT IS A STORE FOR SUPPLIES

NOW, PHOTOS BELOW OF FINISHED AND JUDGED CARVINGS.
