AMERICAN SMOKEOUT DAY IS NOVEMBER 17TH! MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
AGAINST DESTRUCTIVE DECISIONS (SADD) PLAN TO WRITE ANTI-SMOKING MESSAGES IN CHALK ON SIDEWALKS DOWNTOWN NEXT WEEK. THE STUDENTS BELIEVE THE MESSAGES WILL CATCH PEOPLE'S ATTENTION. THE BRIEF MESSAGES WILL CITE STATISTICS
SHOWING THE HEALTH DANGERS OF SMOKING.

SENATOR TOD BOWMAN OF MAQUOKETA WILL HOST A TOWN HALL MEETING NEXT WEDNESDAY LATE AFTERNOON (5:30) AT THE MAQUOKETA LIBRARY TO DISCUSS
EDUCATION PROPOSALS PROPOSED BY GOVERNOR TERRY BRANSTAD.

THE MAQUOKETA VFW IS SPONSORING A VETERAN'S DAY DANCE FROM 7 UNTIL 11
TONIGHT AT THE PEARSON CENTER ON THE FAIRGROUNDS, FEATURING MUSIC
BY POPULAR JACKSON COUNTY BAND, "THE COUNTRY TRADITION".

THE NEW COMEDY "JACK AND JILL" STARTS NATIONWIDE AND TONIGHT AT THE
VOY 3 THEATRE IN MAQUOKETA,RATED PG FOR ALL THE FAMILY.

HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND.

THE "THANK YOU VETERANS" PROGRAM AT THE FAIRGROUNDS TODAY CAME TO A
CLOSE TODAY WITH THE PLAYING OF "TAPS" BY MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL BAND MEMBER,
ROSA BORMAN. MITCHEL RICHARDS PLAYED "ECHO" TAPS. SACRED HEART
CATHOLIC CHURCH DEACON BOB HEAD GAVE A CLOSING MILITARY PRAYER. AFTER THE
PROGRAM WAS OVER, REFRESHMENTS WERE SERVED AND EVERYONE HAD A CHANCE
TO LOOK AT SERVICE PHOTOS BROUGHT IN FOR THE EVENT. MORE PHOTOS BELOW.

JERRY GILMORE WAS THE OLDEST WWII VETERAN PRESENT TODAY, AT AGE 94.
HE SERVED IN THE US NAVY FROM 1942 TO 1945.

ANNE HAWKS SANG THE NATIONAL ANTHEM WITH THE HELP TWO STUDENTS.

KENT CRAWFORD AND THE BIG MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL BAND SUPPLIED THE
PATRIOTIC MUSIC FOR THE VETERAN'S PROGRAM.

BUDDY OLSON, RIGHT, OF MAQUOKETA AND FORMER POLICE CHIEF, IN 2010
ORGANIZED THE FIRST COMMUNITY "THANK THE VETERANS" PROGRAM. NEARLY 200 ATTENDED THEN.
TODAY, HIS 2ND EVENT WAS ATTENDED BY OVER 300.
SHOWN HERE WITH BUDDY IS WWII VETERAN EDDIE ORTELL WHO SERVED IN THE ARMY-AIRFORCE.
MANY VETERANS STOOD AND WERE RECOGNIZED DURING THE PROGRAM.

A COMMUNITY VETERAN'S DAY PROGRAM WAS HELD TODAY AT 1:30 AT THE PEARSON
MEMORIAL CENTER ON THE FAIRGROUND. OVER 300 PEOPLE WERE PRESENT FOR THE
ONE-HOUR PROGRAM
