ANOTHER NICE DAY!
THE MAQUOKETA COMMUNITY SCHOOL BOARD APPROVED THE PRELIMINARY STEPS THIS WEEK TO ADD SIX TENNIS COURTS AND A NEW TRACK AT THE HIGH SCHOOL. TOTAL COST OF THE TENNIS AND TRACK PROJECT WILL BE AROUND $430,000. REVENUE BONDS TO BE PAID BY LOCAL OPTION SALES TAX MONEY WILL PAY PART OF COST. THE ATHLETIC BOOSTER CLUB HAS DONATED $150,000 TOWARD THE TRACK.
THIS YEAR'S MEMORIAL DAY ADDRESS IN MAQUOKETA WILL BE GIVEN BY STATE REPRESENTATIVE
BOB OSTERHAUS OF MAQUOKETA. I VISITED WITH BOB AT THE STORE THIS AFTERNOON AND
HE AND ANN ARE HAVING DINNER AT CEDAR RAPIDS WITH SON MARK. FATHER MARK IS CELEBRATING 20 YEARS AS A PRIEST.
THE MAQUOKETA OPTIMIST CLUB HELD THEIR ANNUAL "RESPECT FOR THE LAW" BANQUET THIS WEEK AND HONORED FORMER JACKSON COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPUTY, ALLEN BARKER, WHO RETIRED IN DECEMBER AFTER 30 YEARS IN LAW ENFORCEMENT.....WITH FIRST THE CITY AND MOSTLY WITH THE COUNTY. THE PROGRAM WAS GIVEN BY FORMER HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL DICK WOLD OF MAQUOKETA WHO IS NOW A MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL SCOUT.
JEAN M. FRANDSEN, AGE 74, OF MAQUOKETA, DIED THIS MORNING AT MERCY HOSPITAL IN DUBUQUE.
WHEN I CAME TO MAQUOKETA IN 1958, SHE AND HER LATE HUSBAND, BUSTER, OWNED AND OPERATED "BUS AND JEAN'S CAFE" ON THE CORNER OF MAIN AND PLATT IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA.
IN LATER YEARS, SHE WORKED A LONG TIME AT THE ASSESSOR'S OFFICE AT THE COURTHOUSE AS A DEPUTY ASSESSOR. AND SHE ALSO SERVED ON THE MAQUOEKETA CITY COUNCIL FOR A FEW YEARS. I KNEW JEAN WELL. SHE WAS A MEMBER OF OUR CHURCH, FIRST LUTHERAN,AND WAS A GOOD KMAQ LISTENER. WILL MISS HER.
SERVICES ARE PENDING AT CARSON AND SON FUNERAL HOME.
THE PRIMARY ELECTION IS GETTING CLOSE...JUNE 8TH. WE HAVE TWO DEMOCRATS RUNNING FOR THE STATE REPRESENTATIVE SEAT BEING VACATED BY BOB OSTERHAUS AND THERE ARE THREE REPUBLICANS ALSO RUNNING IN THE PRIMARY ELECTION. MORE SIGNS ARE POPPING UP ALL OVER THE COUNTY AND
JASON HAYNES IS RUNNING LOTS OF RADIO SPOTS.
HEARD TODAY THAT RADIO SHACK IS MOVING FROM DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA TO MAQUOKETA'S GREATER WEST SIDE, NEAR WAL MART. AND THE COTTAGE RESTAURANT CLOSES AFTER LUNCH TOMORROW AND WILL HAVE A TAG SALE SATURDAY OF FIXTURES, ETC. SO, WE WILL HAVE TWO MORE EMPTY STORES DOWNTOWN. DR. ROEDER HAS SOLD HIS OFFICE BUILDING. THERE'S A NEW "SCRATCH AND DENT" KIND OF FOOD STORE NOW OPEN ON EAST PLATT STREET, BUT HAVE NOT HAD A CHANCE TO VISIT IT YET TO SEE WHAT IT IS LIKE.

THE FRONT OF THE CENTER FACES NEW HIGHWAY 61.
THE MCHS CLASS OF 1954 50-YEAR REUNION WILL BE JULY 17TH,STARTING AT 6 P.M. AT THE COMFORT INN. MEMBERS OF THE 54 AND 55 CLASSES ARE ALSO INVITED, INCLUDING FACULTY MEMBERS FROM THOSE YEARS.
