MORE RAIN LAST NIGHT, BUT TODAY, A NICE SUNNY DAY. OUR TOTAL RAINFALL IN MAQUOKETA WAS ABOUT 2 AND 1/2 INCHES...BUT MANY PLACES IN THE STATE GOT 10 OR MORE. OUR TOTAL FOR THE MONTH HERE IN TOWN IS JUST OVER 5 INCHES, DOUBLE LAST MAY.

THE MAQUOKETA COMMUNITY SCHOOL BOARD APPROVED BIDS TOTALLING $415,000 TO BUILD A NEW
OFFICE AREA ON THE GROUND LEVEL AT THE MAQUOKETA MIDDLE SCHOOL. THAT WAS ABOUT $15,000 OVER THE INITIAL BUDGET. THE DISTRICT ALSO HAS BEEN AWARDED A HARKIN GRANT FOR THE PROJECT, WHICH OFFERS A 60-PERCENT MATCH FOR THE PROJECT, UP TO $400,000. CONSTRUCTION WILL BEGIN IN A FEW DAYS. THE CURRENT OFFICE AREA IS ON THE 2ND FLOOR AND HAS BEEN FOR YEARS. THE NEW BUILDING FOR THE NEW OFFICES WILL BE BUILT BETWEEN THE TWO EXISTING ENTRANCES TO THE MIDDLE SCHOOL.

A DAVENPORT MAN BROKE HIS ANKLE WHEN HE RAN FROM A MAQUOKETA POLICE OFFICER EARLY
SUNDAY MORNING. HE WAS ALSO CHARGED WITH PUBLIC INTOXICATION AND CRIMINAL MISCIEF.
AT AROUND 3 IN THE MORNING, HE WAS DOING DONUTS ON THE GRASS AT THE FIRST WARD PARK.
THE VEHICLE THEN DROVE INTO A DRIVEWAY AND THE TWO MEN GOT OUT AND RAN FROM OFFICER
PAT FIER. FIER FOUND THE DRIVER, DALE HARDISON, 28, OF DAVENPORT, HIDING UNDER A SHED.
DURING THE CHASE FROM THE SHED, HARDISON LEAPED OVER A RETAINING WALL AND IT WAS THEN HE BROKE THE ANKLE AND WAS TREATED AT OUR HOSPITAL. THE OTHER MAN IN THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FOUND.

MORE VANDALISM AND THEFTS REPORTED TO MAQUOKETA POLICE. JOANN FITZPATRICK ON NORTH ELIZA SAID SOMEONE KICKED IN HER GARAGE DOOR, BUT NOTHING TAKEN. BRAD DEERY MOTORS REPORTED SOMEONE SPRAY PAINTED A VEHICLE IN THE LOT ON HIGHWAY 61. AND,MORE PAINTBALL DAMAGE LAST NIGHT ON NORTH MAIN AND NORTH WALNUT.

LAVERNA THOMPSON, AGE 87, DIED SUNDAY AT HER HOME. SHE WAS A HOMEMAKER. SURVIVORS INCLUDE A DAUGHTER IN MAQUOKETA, DONNA LACEY AND TWO SISTERS, ADELINE GEFFERS OF MAQUOKETA AND HELEN STAMPE OF MAQUOKETA.

ESTHER PETERMAN, AGE 87, OF ANAMOSA AND FORMERLY OF MAQUOKETA, DIED THIS MORNING AT THE JONES MEDICAL CENTER IN ANAMOSA, FOLLOWING A LENGTHY ILLNESS. SURVIVORS INCLUDE A SON, KENNETH WAUGH OF MAQUOKETA AND A SISTER, NADINE WOSABA OF MAQUOKETA.
