KMAQ (AM 1320) IS 53 YEARS OLD TOMORROW! I WAS 19 AND EXCITED ABOUT
MY FIRST DISC JOCKEY DAY! NO, I WON'T SAY IT "SEEMS LIKE ONLY YESTERDAY".
THE FM STATION CAME ALONG IN THE FALL OF 1967. NOTHING SPECIAL PLANNED
FOR TOMORROW. WE'LL HAVE ANOTHER CELEBRATION IN TWO YEARS.
THE FIRST MANAGER OF KMAQ, BOB BROWN IN FORT ATKINSON, WISCONSIN, CHECKS THIS DAILY REPORT REGULARLY. HE'S 90. THE FIRST OWNER, NATE GOETZ IN NAPLES, FLORIDA, IS 85 AND I GOT AN EMAIL FROM HIM THIS MORNING. HE LIVED IN MONROE, WISCONSIN IN 1958 AND CAME DOWN TO MAQUOKETA A COUPLE DAYS EACH WEEK. HE PLAYED 18 HOLES OF GOLF TWICE THIS WEEK, SO HE'S DOING FINE. EIGHT WERE ON THE STAFF THAT FIRST DAY. FOUR OF THE EIGHT ARE NO LONGER LIVING...STAN BARTON, RAY SHIELDS, DUANE WILLEY AND GITTE BOLLINGER. JANE BEAN, OUR BOOKKEEPER THEN, IS LIVING SOMEWHERE IN SOUTHERN IOWA.
THE FIFTIES...THOSE WHERE THE DAYS!
