THIS IS THE FRONT OF THE HOME AT 512 SOUTH NIAGARA STREET IN MAQUOKETA, OWNED BY SHAWN FLAGEL, THAT WAS SEVERLY DAMAGED BY FIRE EARLY SUNDAY MORNING. MAQUOKETA FIREMEN WERE CALLED TO THE SCENE AT ABOUT 3:30 A.M. SHAWN SAID SMOKE DETECTORS WENT OFF, WHICH AWAKENED HIM. HE CALLED THE LAW CENTER AND THEN GOT OUT. NO ONE ELSE WAS HOME AT THE TINME. THE HOME IS ON A CORNER LOT AND THE PICTURE BELOW IS THE SIDE OF THE HOUSE, FACING SUMMIT STREET. A NEW GARAGE TO THE WEST WAS NOT DAMAGED. BILL AND HELEN STEWART ALSO LIVED IN THAT HOME FOR QUITE A FEW YEARS.
ASSISTANT FIRE CHIEF AL MUHLHAUSEN SAID AT THE FIRE SCENE SUNDAY MORNING THAT THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS NOT KNOWN, BUT IT IS NOT SUSPICIOUS. IT APPEARED THE FIRE STARTED IN A BACK BEDROOM. FLAMES WERE SHOOTING OUT OF THE ATTIC WHEN FIREMEN ARRIVED AND THEY SPENT ABOUT 90 MINUTES AT THE SCENE.
