NICE DAY AGAIN AND FOR 2ND DAY IN A ROW, THE HIGH WAS 80.
TOMORROW, SUNNY AND 83.
THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL IS CONSIDERING REZONING THE COMMUNITY CENTER (ACROSS FROM GOODENOW FIELD) FROM RESIDENTIAL TO B1 BUSINESS. THE CITY WOULD LIKE TO SELL THE BUILDING AND THE CITY MANAGER SAID IT WOULD BE HARD TO SELL
THE BUILDING WITHOUT CHANGING THE ZONING. THE CITY'S PLANNING
AND ZONING COMMISSION HAS TO CONSIDER THE CHANGE NEXT.
A PORTION OF OLD HIGHWAY 61 SOUTH OF MAQUOKETA, BETWEEN
THE CITY AND HIGHWAY 136, WILL BE CLOSED STARTING NEXT MONDAY,
FOR RESURFACING.
I LOST A COFFEE BUDDY THIS MORNING. MAURY MORRIS, AGE 91, DIED AT THE HOSPITAL THIS MORNING, FOLLOWING A SHORT ILLNESS. HIS WIFE
DOROTHY DIED THIS SPRING AND HE STARTED FAILING GRADUALLY SINCE
THEN. I VISITED HIM AT THE HOSPITAL SATURDAY, BUT HE DID NOT RESPOND AND I DON'T THINK HE KNEW I WAS THERE. BECAUSE OF DOROTHY'S LINGERING ILLNESS, HE CARED FOR HER AT HOME THE LAST FEW YEARS OF HER LIFE. BUT HE ALWAYS MADE AN EFFORT TO HAVE COFFEE AT THE DECKER AT 9:30 A.M WEEKDAYS WITH ME, JAKE BICKFORD, BUD BERNARD, BOB OSTERHAUS, DAVE JOHNSON AND BOB ENGEL. AND JUST ABOUT EVERY DAY, WE TALKED ABOUT GOLF, AS GOLF WAS MAURY'S LIFE. HE PLAYED A LOT OF GOLF UNTIL A COUPLE YEARS AGO AND HE WATCHED THE GOLFERS FROM HIS LIVING ROOM OVERLOOKING THE MAQUOKETA COUNTRY CLUB COURSE. HE WAS A VERY GOOD GOLFER! HE HAD 3 HOLES IN ONE! A FEW YEARS AGO, WE MADE UP A LIST OF THE TOP 10 GOLFERS OF ALL TIME IN MAQUOKETA AND HE WAS ON THE LIST. HE (AND DOROTHY) SERVED IN THE MARINES IN WORLD WAR II. THAT'S WHERE THEY MET. HE WAS AT PEARL HARBOR ON DECEMBER 7, 1941, WHEN IT WAS ATTACKED. WE TALKED ABOUT THAT ONCE OR TWICE A YEAR. HE RETIRED FROM THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL DISTRICT, FROM THE POSITION OF DIRECTOR OF BUSING. DOROTHY WAS A LONGTIME BOOKKEEPER HERE AT KMAQ. MAURY IS SURVIVED BY A SON, LEON, IN TEXAS, A STEP-GRANDSON IN TEXAS, AND A DAUGHTER CHERYL MORRIS IN ARIZONA. MAURY WAS A GOOD MAN AND WE WILL MISS HIM MORNINGS. SERVICES ARE PENDING AT CARSON'S.
HAVE A GOOD FRIDAY.

DENNIS VOY
CLICK ON THIS TO ENLARGE IT. A COUPLE DAYS
AGO, ON THIS DAILY REPORT, I MENTIONED SQUIRES MANOR. MAX MOELLER DOWN IN ARIZONA READ IT AND ANSWERED WITH THIS EMAIL. I THOUGH IT WAS INTERESTING AND
DECIDED TO SHARE IT. MAX LEFT MAQUOKETA FOR HOT AND DRY ARIZONA IN THE 50'S. HE IS
NOW SOMEWHERE BETEEN 95 AND 99, IS
BUILDING ANOTHER NEW HOME THESE DAYS,
AND HAS A FANTASTIC MEMORY. THRIVES ON HEALTH FOODS AND KEEPS BUSY.
WITH HIS MEMORY, MAX COULD WRITE A BOOK
ABOUT GROWING UP IN MAQUOKETA, BOTH
BEFORE GETTING OUT OF SCHOOL AND THE YEARS AFTER, BEFORE GOING SOUTH.
