CLOUDY TODAY....MISTY THIS MORNING. LOOKS LIKE IT WILL CLEAR UP A BIT BEFORE THE DAY IF OVER. IN THE 80'S TOMORROW AND UPPER 80'S SUNDAY AND MONDAY.
FACT IN THE NEWS TODAY ... IT WILL TAKE 750 BIG LOADS OF FILL TO FILL UP THE
BIG WHOLE ON MAIN STREET. CITY MANAGER BRIAN WAGNER SAID THEY HAVE
RECEIVED THE FINAL NOTICE FROM THE ENGINEERS CONCERNING ASBESTOS AT THE SITE. THERE WERE VERY SMALL AMOUNTS AND VERY LITTLE WAS REALIZED IN THE AIR. WAGNER SAID THERE WAS VIRTUALLY NO ASBESTOS. WAGNER SAID THERE IS CONCERN ABOUT THE CORNER BUILDING STILL STANDING. HE SAID THERE IS A HOLE IN IT AND THE CITY ENGINEERS WILL BE TALKING WITH THE EPA AND SHIPO
TO SEE IF THEY CAN TEAR DOWN THAT BUILDING SOON BEFORE THE FILL IS BROUGHT IN NEXT TO THE BUILDING. THAT WOULD BE GOOD IF THEY COULD GET APPROVAL
TO TAKE THE BUILDING DOWN NOW INSTEAD OF LATER THIS SUMMER. THE OWNER OF
THE SMALL SHED BETWEEN THE CLEANUP SITE AND THE MITCHELL MILL DECIDED TO ADD SOME DECORATION TO THE AREA. MICHELLE FLAGEL SAID SHE MADE A LARGE CARPENTER WHEEL QUILT BLOCK TO PUT ON THE SIDE OF THE BUILDING.
IT CAN BE SEEN FROM MAIN STREET. I'LL GET A PICTURE OF IT. SHE AND HER HUSBAND ARLYN COMPLETED THE WOODED QUILT BLOCK THEMSELVES. IT IS MADE OUT OF WOOD AND HAND PAINTED.
JACOB AND ELIZABETH HAYWARD OF MAQUOKETA ARE PARENTS OF A BOY BORN LAST FRIDAY AT TRINITY IN BETTENDORF. GRANDPARENTS ARE BILL AND BRENDA

ALSO LAST NIGHT, HE RAN IN THE FINALS OF THE 400 METER RUN AND TOOK 3RD OVERALL IN CLASS 3-A WITH A TIME OF 49.65. THE WINNING TIME WAS 48.41.
TONIGHT, MAQUOKETA'S 4 BY 100 METER RELAY TEAM WILL RUN IN THE PRELLEMS.
MEMBERS OF THE TEAM ARE BRYN GISEL, JAKE KIRK, JON BOPES AND TYLER RUTENBEK.
THERE WERE 50 APPLICANTS FOR THE TWO MAQUOKETA POLICE OFFICER POSITIONS OPEN. THE CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION WILL BE AT 9 TOMORROW MORNING AT THE MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL TO HOST PHYSICAL AGILITY TESTING AND THEN WILL INTERVIEW SOME OF THE APPLICANTS. THE COMMISSION CERTIFIES A LIST OF QUALIFIED CANDIDATES FOR THE POLICE CHIEF AND THE CHIEF MAKES THE FINAL DECISION.
HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND.

ELWOOD, IOWA, MAIN STREET, 1911 , NEARLY 100 YEARS AGO. ONLY ONE BUILDING REMAINS. TOWN STILL HAS A NICE CHURCH AND THE OLD SCHOOL IS PRIVATELY OWNED AND USED FOR AN AUTO RESTORATION BUSINESS. LOTS OF NICE HOMES IN THE LITTLE TOWN NOT FAR FROM MAQUOKETA. DARCY BENTON WAS FROM ELWOOD AND WAS NAMED MISS IOWA MANY YEARS AGO. CLICK ON PHOTO TO ENLARGE IT. LOOKS LIKE CROSSING MAIN STREET AFTER A RAIN MIGHT HAVE BEEN A LITTLE MUDDY.
