THE THURSDAY "DAILY REPORT" IS
BELOW THE PHOTOS!
THE ABOVE PHOTO OF STAN HARDIN WAS TAKEN IN THE MID 80'S.... IN THE FM CONTROL ROOM HERE AT KMAQ.
STAN, AT THE AGE OF 58, DIED YESTERDAY AT UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL IN
IOWA CITY, AFTER AN EXTENDED ILLNESS.
STAN WORKED TWICE AT KMAQ.
WHILE IN HIGH SCHOOL AT MAQUOKETA HIGH, HE WAS AN EVENING AND
WEEKEND STUDENT ANNOUNCER, IN 1969 AND 1970.
HE WAS SMART (VALIDICTORIAN) AND ALREADY THEN HAD A DEEP, GOOD
RADIO VOICE. AFTER GRADUATING FROM HIGH SCHOOL, HE LEFT KMAQ.
IN THE 70'S HE TOOK A RADIO ANNOUNCING JOB IN PEORIA AND WAS THERE
IN RADIO FOR SEVERAL YEARS.
HE CAME BACK TO KMAQ IN 1980 AND WAS THE MORNING ANNOUNCER ON KMAQ-FM UNTIL 1988. HE GOT MARRIED WHILE WORKING
HERE (BY A MAGISTRATE AT THE COURT HOUSE) AND LEIGHTON
HEPKER AND I WERE ASKED TO BE A WITNESS TO THE CEREMONY.
WHILE WORKING AT KMAQ, MANY OF YOU MAY RECALL SEEING HIM
REGULARLY AT THE VOY THEATRE, AS HE WORKED PART TIME THERE
AS EVENING MANAGER ON JACK'S DAY OFF.
AFTER LEAVING KMAQ, FOR A SHORT TIME HE AND JACQUE RAN A
BAR AND GRILL AT HURSTVILLE AND THEN HE DECIDED TO GO TO COLLEGE
TO BE A PHARMACIST. HE GRADUATED FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA
COLLEGE OF PHARMACY AND WAS A PHARMACIST FOR A COUPLE YEARS
AFTER, MOSTLY FOR WAL MART AND HAD TO RETIRE BECAUSE OF
HIS HEALTH.
STAN WAS A BIG GUY, GOOD GUY, GOOD RADIO ANNOUNCER, GOOD EMPLOYEE AND REGULARLY READ THIS DAILY REPORT. FOUR YEARS AGO, ON OUR 50TH ANNIVERSARY HERE AT KMAQ, HE STOPPED IN AND I INTERVIEWED HIM ON THE RADIO FOR A FEW MINUTES.
THE LAST TIME I SAW HIM WAS AT JACQUE'S FUNERAL A COUPLE YEARS AGO.
HIS FULL OBITUARY CAN BE READ ON THE CARSON FUNERAL HOME WEB
SITE.
