RAINY DAY AND RAIN FOR TONIGHT.

JACKSON COUNTY WILL BE GETTING A LARGE BUILDING IN THE MAQUOKETA INDUSTRIAL SITE, FOR NOTHING. THE OWNER (N. L. BASSFORD OF VALDOSTA, GA.) HAS BEEN TRYING TO SELL THE BUILDING FOR YEARS AND HAS DECIDED TO GIVE IT TO THE COUNTY AND TAKE THE TAX WRITE-OFF. THE 53,100 SQUARE FOOT BUILDING HAS RECENTLY BEEN APPRAISED FOR $1.2 MILLION. SO, AS SOON AS THE PAPERWORK HAS BEEN COMPLETED, THE SUPERVISORS WILL GET THE DEED AND WILL HAVE A WORK SESSION AND START GIVING SOME THOUGHT ABOUT WHAT TO DO WITH THE BUILDING. THE TAXES HAVE BEEN PAID. IT HAD BEEN RENTED ON AND OFF FOR WAREHOUSE PURPOSES. IT WAS BUILT IN 1990 AND S & H FABRICATING OPERATED ITS PLANT (AUTO PARTS) IN IT UNTIL THEY CLOSED IN 1999.

THE MAQUOKETA GOLF TEAM PARTICIPATED IN THE WEST DUBUQUE INVITATIONAL TODAY AT THE TIMBERLINE GOLF COURSE AT DUBUQUE.
THERE WERE 8 SCHOOLS COMPETING AND DAVENPORT CENTRAL TOOK FIRST AND MAQUOKETA SECOND. MAQUOKETA'S JORDAN DAVIS WAS THE MEDALIST OF THE DAY, SHOOTING AN 81. AND MAQUOKETA SENIOR, NICKI GERLACH GOT A HOLE IN ONE ON THE 142 YARD 14TH HOLE. HER SCORE FOR THE DAY WAS 92.
WHAT A THRILL FOR NICKI. SHE WORKS FOR ME AT THE DOWNTOWN THEATRE AND NOW MAINLY AT THE DRIVE-IN. GOOD EMPLOYEE...GOOD STUDENT...AND
NOW A GREAT GOLFER. CONGRATULATIONS TO NICKI. ALSO FOR MAQUOKETA,
KARA CLARK SHOT A 106, HANNAH DAVISON A 113, AUBREY ROCKWELL A 117 AND NATASHA LANE A 124. THE TEAM TOTAL WAS 392. DAVENPORT CENTRAL SCORE WAS 369.

MAQUOKETA SCHOOL BOARD LAST NIGHT ACCEPTED THE RESIGNATION, WITHOUT COMMENT, OF HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL COACH JEFF HERKELMAN.
NO REASON WAS GIVEN FOR THE RESIGNATION. HE HAS BEEN THE HEAD BOYS COACH FOR SEVERAL YEARS. HE WILL STAY ON AS A TEACHER BUT I HEAR HE MAY ALSO LOOK FOR ANOTHER COACHING JOB SOMEWHERE ELSE.

THERE WILL BE NO REPORT TOMORROW, OR THURSDAY.
