MAQUOKETA, AND ALL OF EASTERN IOWA, AND MANY OTHER STATES, WAS WARNED ABOUT A TERRIBLE BLIZZARD COMING OUR WAY. IT CAME
EARLY LAST NIGHT AND
DID NOT END UNTIL LATE
THIS MORNING. TODAY,
THOUSANDS SPENT THE DAY
AT HOME. AND THOUSANDS
WERE AT WORK CLEANING
UP THE SNOW....SHOVELING,
PLOWING, BLOWING, AND
HAULING. IT WAS SO BAD,
EVEN A FUNERAL WAS POSTPONED. I TOOK A FEW
PHOTOS FOR YOU TO ENJOY.
WHAT A WAY TO START THE NEW MONTH OF FEBRUARY. THE ONLY GOOD NEWS TODAY WAS THE GROUNDHOG
DIDN'T SEE HIS SHADOW AND WE WILL THEREFORE HAVE AN EARLY SPRING.
HERE'S A PHOTO OF MY THEATRE...WHICH WAS CLOSED TONIGHT. THE SNOW
YOU SEE STILL NEEDS TO BE REMOVED. MARTY BALLIU WILL DO IT OVERNIGHT
WITH HIS PICKUP PLOW. THE THEATRE WILL BE CLOSED AGAIN TONIGHT, AS WILL MOST BUSINESS PLACES. SORRY YOU FOLKS DOWN SOUTH MISSED IT.

LOOKING NORTH ON MAIN STREET. ALL SCHOOLS WERE CLOSED TODAY AND MOST
STORES. NO MAIL DELIVERY.
THE Y WAS CLOSED AND THE
LIBRARY. AND THE COURT HOUSE AND CITY HALL.
MOST RESTAURANTS TOO.
WAL MART WAS OPEN AND
FAREWAY OPENED TWO HOURS
LATE. NO NEWSPAPER DELIVERIES IN MAQUOKETA
TODAY. IT WAS A DANDY!
WE GOT AROUND 14-15 INCHES
OF SNOW, BUT SNOW DRIFTS
WERE 3, 4 AND 5 FEET HIGH.
THE WIND BLEW ALL NIGHT
AT 30-50 MPH.
LOOKING SOUTH ON MAIN STREET. TONIGHT WE
GET DOWN TO 10 BELOW.

NO SCHOOL AGAIN TOMORROW.

THIS HAD TO BE ON OF THE
WORST STORMS IN
MAQUOKETA IN THE PAST
50 YEARS. CERTAINLY MORE
DRIFTING THAN ANY OTHER.

I SLEPT IN MY OFFICE OVER NIGHT SO I COULD GET KMAQ
ON-THE-AIR AT THE REGULAR
TIME OF 5:35 A.M. I KNEW
RUSTY, WHO LIVES IN DELMAR,
WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE
IT IN. THE PHONE STARTED RINGING AT 5 A.M. AND HUNDREDS OF CALLS FOLLOWED DURING THE MORNING, WITH QUESTIONS AND CANCELLATIONS.
BETWEEN 5:30 AND 9 A.M.... I PLAYED NO MUSIC...IT WAS ALL TALK.
FUN TIME TO BE A BROADCASTER! KMAQ HAS A WEB CAM THAT SHOWS DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA "LIVE" FROM SUN-UP TO SUN-DOWN. IT IS AIMED
AT THE POST OFFICE AND THE M-S-B BANK CLOCK WHICH GIVES THE TIME AND TEMP.
YOU'LL NOTICE CARS MOVING UP AND DOWN MAIN STREET. TO GET TO THE WEB
CAM, YOU GO TO WWW.KMAQ.COM AND CLICK-ON THE "ON AIR LISTEN" BUTTON IN
THE UPPER LEFT HAND CORNER. THAT BUTTON BRINGS YOU TWO THINGS...
KMAQ-FM AND THE WEB CAM.

HAVE A GOOD WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND THURSDAY.

THE PHOTO BELOW WON'T ENLARGE AS

A BUSY DAY AT THE PASTIME THEATRE
IN MAQUOKETA. I THINK IT WAS A
PEP RALLY FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL
FOOTBALL TEAM. LOOK CLOSELY
AND YOU WILL FIND THE MHS
CHEERLEADERS. NANCY JO (STEWART) MOORE
WAS ONE.

PHOTO TAKEN IN 1952 AT A MAQUOKETA
HOMECOMING PEP RALLY.

WESTPHAL'S WAS A GROCERY STORE.

THE PASTIME CAME DOWN IN 1973 AND
"SMILES ON MAIN DENTAL CLINIC" IS NOW
IN THAT LOCATION.

THE PASTIME HAD OVER 600 SEATS.

I OWNED IT FROM OCTOBER 1, 1972 UNTIL
JANUARY 31, 1973. THE LAST MOVIE WAS
SHOWN THE NIGHT OF JANUARY 31ST.

CLICK-ON THE PHOTO TO ENLARGE IT A
LITTLE.
