THE LUNCH ON THE DAIRY FARM WAS FROM 1 UNTIL 4 THIS AFTERNOON.
GREAT TURNOUT! NANCY AND I ARRIVED AT ABOUT 3 WHEN THE RUSH
WAS OVER. IT WAS HOSTED BY SCOTT AND TRICIA HOLDGRAFER FOR THE
JACKSON-CLINTON DAIRY ASSOCIATION, A WIND-UP TO JUNE DAIRY MONTH.
HERE ARE TWO OF THE STARS OF THE SHOW TODAY. THEY WERE WAITING
IN LINE TO BE MILKED. THE MILKING PARLOR (A DOUBLE UNIT OF 9 MACHINES)
CAN MILK 18 AT A TIME, 3 TIMES EACH DAY. EACH OF THE 3 SHIFTS TAKES
ABOUT 4 HOURS TO MILK ALL 400 COWS. THE HOLDGRAFERS, TO HELP THEM,
HAVE 3 FULLTIME HIRED HANDS, IN ADDITION TO PART TIME EMPLOYEES,
INCLUDING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. CLICK-ON THE PHOTOS TO ENLARGE
THEM.

SCOTT HOLGRAFER SHOWN HERE DID NOT GROW UP ON A FARM. HE ATTENDED
SCHOOL AT PRESTON AND WENT INTO THE DAIRY BUSINESS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL
NEAR DYERSVILLE. HE MOVED TO THE PRESENT LOCATION ON 328TH AVENUE
NORTH OF ANDREW IN 1996. FIRST AS A PART OWNER AND NOW SOLE OWNER
WITH HIS WIFE TRICIA. HIS FARM HAS GROWN A LOT SINCE THOSE EARLY DAYS
WHEN HE SAID HE FOUND OUT YOU CAN'T MAKE ENOUGH MONEY MILKING A
HERD OF 50 OR SO. AND SO BIGGER AND BIGGER HIS OPERATION GREW.
AND PROBABLY WILL GROW MORE.
