WE HAD SOME EXCITEMENT AT KMAQ JUST AFTER 9 THIS MORNING.
WE WERE JUST ABOUT TO START THE PROGRAM "JUST TALK" AND WE
SMELLED SMOKE IN THE HALLWAY AND NOTICED A SLIGHT HAZE.
AFTER QUICKLY DECIDING IT WAS NOT A "BURNED OUT BALLAST",
WE DECIDED TO CALL 9-1-1 FOR THE FIRE DEPARTMENT.    BEFORE THEY ARRIVED, DOTTIE BAYLES SAID THE ODER WAS STRONGEST AT HER OFFICE
DOOR AND RIGHT NEXT TO THE REFRIGERATED WATER COOLER.
AND THAT WAS IT....GETTING UP CLOSER TO THE FOUNTAIN, THE  ODOR
BECAME STRONGER.    WHEN FIREMEN ARRIVED, THEY QUICKLY TOOK
OFF THE FRONT COVER AND SAW....WHAT YOU SEE ABOVE....A FOOT-LONG
BURNED WIRE.     AND WE CHECKED AND FOUND THAT THE BREAKER TO
THE OUTLET THERE WAS TRIPPED.    IF THE FIRE HAD HAPPENED OVERNIGHT, THE BREAKER TRIPPING WOULD HAVE PROBABLY  PREVENTED
AN OUTRIGHT FIRE.    THANKS TO A QUICK RESPONSE BY THE  POLICE, FIRE DEPARTMENT AND OTHERS!     WHEN KMAQ MOVED DOWN HERE IN
1970, SEARS CATALOG STORE WAS IN THAT HALF OF BUILDING.    AND
THAT COOLER WAS HERE THEN AND LEFT FOR US BY SEARS.   SO, IT IS
OVER 40 YEARS OLD AND WAS STILL WORKING FINE.    OVER THE YEARS, WE
DID NOTHING WITH IT, EXCEPT TO RELOAD THE REFRIGERANT.
I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AMAZED AT HOW IT JUST KEPT WORKING AND WORKING FOR SOOOO LONG.
IT'S LIFE IS OVER!  WE WILL BE GETTING A NEW ONE!
CLICK-ON THE PHOTO TO ENLARGE IT!   JUST WHAT YOU CAME TO OUR WEB SITE TO SEE.....A BURNED-OUT WATER COOLER.
OH  YES..."JUST TALK"  WENT ON THE AIR 15  MINUTES LATE.
