THURSDAY DAILY

KAREN AND TERRY SLATTERY OF MAQUOKETA, HONORED THIS NOON IN THE COMMUNITY ROOM OF THE CLINTON ENGINES MUSEUM.   THE LUNCH WAS SPONSORED (EVERY YEAR EVENT)  BY THE JACKSON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY.    IT IS A  "THANK YOU"  TO SOCIETY VOLUNTEERS THE PAST YEAR.    I GET INVITED BECAUSE I PROMOTE EACH
TUESDAY THE  AGENDA FOR THE BROWN BAG LUNCH.     AFTER LUNCH,
(IT WAS HOME MADE AND  DELICIOUS, INCLUDING LEMON CAKE) THE
TUBBS FAMILY PRESENTS THE ANNUAL "GRACE TUBBS VOLUNTEER AWARD".
GRACE WAS AN ACTIVE VOLUNTEER RIGHT UP UNTIL HER DEATH ABOUT
20 YEARS AGO.    THIS WAS THE 19TH ANNUAL AWARD AND HER 3 SONS
(HUSBAND WAS EDWARD) WERE ON HAND, WITH STEVE READING FROM
HIS NOTES BELOW...,.

THEY WERE SURPRISED!  IT IS KEPT SECRET! KAREN GAVE THANK-YOU REMARKS AND THEY WERE PRESENTED $500 TO GIVE TO THIER FAVORITE CHARITY AND ALSO WERE PRESENTED WITH AN ENGRAVED MANTLE CLOCK
FOR THEIR HOME.

FROM DEWITT, BILL FROM ELDRIDGE, KAREN, TERRY AND STEVE FROM
MAQUOKETA.    IN BACK, TWO (FORMER COLLEGE BASKETBALL STARS) GRANDSONS, ABE AND BRIG.     BOTH ARE KEY OFFICERS OF OHNWARD BANKS, OF WHICH MAQUOKETA STATE BANK IS ONE.

IT HAS BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE I TALKED TO  JEAN BUCHNER.   I  WAS VERY
GLAD TO SEE HER TODAY.    SHE IS 97 BUT LOOKS LIKE 77.   LIVES AT
RURAL MAQUOKETA WITH SON LEE.  HAS ANOTHER SON JAY WHO LIVES
OUT WEST.   HER LATE HUSBAND WAS A PHARMACIST FOR THE FAMOUS
DRUG STORE ON THE CORNER, NOW LA CASA DE PANCHO MEXICAN
RESTAURANT.    SHE SAID LEE DOES THE HARD WORK AND I THE COOKING,
...COOKING THE GOOD STUFF, MANY OLD TIME FAVORITES.
SHE HAS PAINTED OLD BARNS IN THE AREA AND THE PAINTINGS ARE IN
THE MUSEUM ON THE FAIRGROUNDS.    YEARS AGO AT A CHRISTMAS
AUCTION AT THE MUSEUM, I PURCHASED ONE OF HER DRIFTWOOD
MANGERS AND NOW BRING IT OUT EVERY CHRISTMAS.       A "GRAND LADY"...

BY THE WAY..THE MYSTERY PHOTO ON THIS "DAILY" THE OTHER DAY WAS TAKEN AT LITTLE BEAR PARK, AFTER THE STINKY OLD REST ROOM BUILDING WAS TORN DOWN BY CITY WORKERS AND HAULED AWAY.   A NICE NEW BUILDING WAS OPENED LAST YEAR, NEARBY.    WINNING A VOY THEATRE GIFT CARD, NORM KENNEDY AND RICH FIX, FOR THE ANSWER, MINUTES APART, OF WHERE PHOTO WAS TAKEN.


THE CARDINALS ARE OFF TO A SLOW START, BUT THEY DID WIN LAST NIGHT,
HAVE TODAY OFF, AND PLAY THE YANKEES THIS  WEEKEND OUT EAST.

FOUND OUT THAT DEB WHO BOWLED THE 300 TUESDAY NIGHT AT TIMBER LANES, BOWLED
ABOUT 20 YEARS AGO, THEN GAVE UP THE SPORT  WHILE RAISING KIDS AND JUST THIS YEAR, STARTED BOWLING  AGAIN.    AND A PERFECT
GAME!     ONCE BEFORE, YEARS AGO, SHE ROLLED A 298.   WHAT AN ATHLETE!
