HAVE HAD NO RAIN SINCE A BRIEF SHOWER THURSDAY NIGHT DURING THE GRANDSTAND SHOW AT THE FAIR.

THE FAIR WAS HURT BY THE HEAT, ESPECIALLY YESTERDAY, WITH PAID ATTENDANCE ONLY AT 1,713. A YEAR AGO SUNDAY, 3,146.
THIS YEAR'S TOTAL ATTENDANCE WAS 16,860, COMPARED TO 19,261 LAST YEAR.
LAST NIGHT, ABOUT 150 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE CHUCKWAGON RACES GRANDSTAND SHOW. AND THE CARNIVAL CLOSED DOWN AT 7. I HAVE NEVER IN THE 47 YEARS I HAVE ATTENDED THE FAIR, SEEN THE CARNIVAL NOT IN OPERATION ON SUNDAY NIGHT. AND THIS YEAR, FIRST TIME EVER, THERE WAS NO FERRIS WHEEL. EVANS SHOWS SPLITS THIS WEEK, THE TWO GO BACK TOGETHER FOR THE MISSISSIPPI VALLEY FAIR AT DAVENPORT.
THE GRAND CHAMPION STEER THIS YEAR WAS SHOWN BY DOUGLAS SCHNOOR, A 2006 MCHS GRAD AND SON OF RODNEY AND SHERRY SCHNOOR OF MAQUOKETA
MONTANA DEPPEY OF ANDREW SHOWED THE RESERVE CHAMPION.
THE GROUNDS CLEAN-UP WORK STARTED TODAY BY GROUNDSKEEPER DON POLL AND WILL TAKE ABOUT A WEEK. NEXT EVENT IS BINGO, TOMORROW NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY MORNING, A RE-UNION OF THE MAQUOKETA BEARS BASEBALL ALUMNI. BOTH TO BE HELD IN THE PEARSON BUILDING...AND BOTH OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
THE $500 CASH LAST NIGHT, WON BY JESSICA FLAGEL OF MAQUOKETA.
THE QUILT DRAWING WINNER WAS PHYLLIS SCHNEDEN OF DELMAR.

ORVILLE CLARK, AGE 96, OF MAQUOKETA, DIED SUNDAY. HIS COMPLETE OBIT ALSO AT THE CARSON WEB SITE.

SERVICES ARE PENDING AT CARSON'S FOR CLAUDE BECK, AGE 84, WHO DIED YESTERDAY AT MILL VALLEY CARE CENTER IN BELLEVUE. CLAUDE WAS BORN AND RAISED IN MAQUOKETA AND LIVED MOST OF HIS LIFE HERE. HE WAS IN THE AIRFORCE DURING WW2 AND THEN IN AIRFORCE RESERVES FOR MANY YEARS AS AN OFFICER. HE WORKED FOR KMAQ'S SALES DEPARTMENT IN THE LATE 50'S UNTIL THE EARLY 70'S. ALSO HAD A SHORT DAILY DISC JOCKEY SHOW ON KMAQ.
DURING THOSE YEARS OF THE 40'S THRU 60'S, HE WORKED PART TIME FOR THE ORPHEUM THEATRE IN MAQUOKETA AND THEN LATER FOR THE CHIEF AND PASTIME THEATRES IN MAQUOKETA. HE LOVED THE THEATRE BUSINESS IN THE OLD DAYS. ALSO LIKED THE GAME OF GOLF. HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS SON MARK AND FAMILY. I HAD MANY GOOD TIMES WITH CLAUDE AND HIS WIFE NADINE.
MY SYMPATHY TO MARK AND THE FAMILY. HIS FULL OBITUARY SHOULD BE UP ON THE CARSON WEB SITE TOMORROW.

MARK WILLEY, AGE 54, OF MAQUOKETA, THIS MORNING WAS SENTENCED TO A TOTAL OF 35 YEARS IN PRISON FOR HIS ATTEMPT TO KILL HIS SISTER BACK IN APRIL. WHEN ASKED IF HE WANTED TO SAY SOMETHING...HE SPOKE FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES AND TOOK CREDIT FOR MANY MAQUOKETA PROJECTS THE PAST YEARS. THE JUDGE TOLD WILLEY "YOU ARE A DANGEROUS PERSON!' HE MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR PAROLE IN ABOUT 15 YEARS. HIS ATTORNEY SAID WILLEY WILL FILE AN APPEAL. SHERIFF RUSS KETTMAN TOOK WILLEY TO THE OAKDALE PROCESSING CENTER THIS AFTERNOON. WILL WAS ORDERED TO MAKE RESTITUTION FOR JAIL FEES, TO HIS SISTER, AND FOR COURT APPOINTED ATTORNEY FEES....A TOTAL OF OVER $18,000.

THE FAIR DREW 3,347 PEOPLE YESTERDAY, DOWN ABOUT 700 FROM THE RECORD THURSDAY LAST YEAR. A SHORT CLOUDBURST OF RAIN CAME HALFWAY THROUGH THE 75 MINUTE AARON TIPPIN SHOW, AND THE SHOW WENT ON DESPITE THE RAIN. THE STAGE AND MUCH OF THE GRANDSTAND HAS A ROOF. A 3-MINUTE FIREWORKS DISPLAY FOLLOWED THE SHOW AND IT SPOOKED SOME HORSES IN THE NEARBY HORSE SHOW. I SAW THE FIREWORKS AND THOUGH SHORT, WAS VERY NICE. MAQUOKETA PEOPLE WINNING $100 LAST NIGHT WERE: CRYSTAL KNIGHT, CHUCK BURNETT, AND AMY HUNTER.

TRUCK AND TRACTOR PULL TONIGHT AT THE FAIR. THE HEAT IS
DEFINITELY GOING TO HURT ATTENDANCE THIS WEEKEND. UP IN MID TO UPPER 90'S BOTH TOMORROW AND SUNDAY.

MID 80'S TODAY....AND INTO THE LOW 90'S THIS WEEKEND.

THE JACKSON COUNTY FAIR PARADE LASTED AN HOUR AND 40 MINUTES
LAST NIGHT. THE OVERALL WINNER OF THE PARADE WAS THE ENTRY BY THE MAQUOKETA LIVESTOCK SALES, BOB LARKEY, OWNER.

FAIR ATTENDANCE WAS VERY GOOD, 4,717.....AROUND 700 MORE THAN THE WEDNESDAY OF LAST YEAR. LAST YEAR'S OVERALL ATTENDANCE WAS
A RECORD. SO, THE FAIR IS OFF TO A GOOD START. THE GRANDSTAND WAS PACKED LAST NIGHT, WITH STANDING ROOM ONLY.

$50 WINNERS IN THE DRAWING AFTER THE GRANDSTAND SHOW INCLUDED THE FOLLOWING MAQUOKETA RESIDENTS: DAVE EARLES,
JANE KUTSCH, JANICE HAMILTON, DON SCHWENKER, JOSH DALTON AND HEATHER WILHELM.

LONGTIME C OUNTRY GREAT AARON TIPPIN WILL BE IN FRONT OF THE GRANDSTAND TONIGHT AT 8. BROOKE BYUM, RED HENTON'S GRANDDAUGHTER , WILL DO THE WARM-UP PRE-SCHOOL BEFORE AARON TAKES THE STAGE.

WINNERS HAVE BEEN NAMED IN THE FIRST "BUCKET OF BLOOMS" CONTEST HOSTED BY THE JACKSON COUNTY MASTER GARDNERS AND TIED IN WITH THE FAIR. LORIN DEPPE OF MAQUOKETA TOOK FIRST PLACE....LINDA LANE OF PRESTON, SECOND.....ANDREW PETAL PALS, THIRD PLACE....DORIS CURRIER OF MAQUOKETA TIED FOR FOURTH PLACE WITH THE OTTER CREEK SHOOTING STARS, AND NANCY TOUTSCH OF MAQUOKETA AND MARY ANNE KUNDE OF BELLEVUE TIED FOR FIFTH PLACE. THE DESIGNS INCLUDED FLOWERS, VEGETABLES, GRASSES AND HERBS IN FIVE GALLON BUCKETS, THERE WERE 27 ENTRIES. THE BUCKETS ARE LOCATED THROUGHOUT THE JACKSON COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS AND WILL BE UP THROUGH SUNDAY.

ON THE POLICE BLOTTER, LISA HORCHER REPORTED HER SON'S TRUCK
WAS PARKED AT THE MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL PARKING LOT YESTERDAY AND IT WAS SPRAY PAINTED WITH ORANGE PAINT.

THE JACKSON COUNTY DEMOCRATS ARE CALLING A SPECIAL MEETING
FOR THIS MONDAY NIGHT AT THE LIBRARY IN MAQUOKETA FOR THE PURPOSE OF NOMINATING SOMEONE TO BE THE DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE
ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT FOR JACKSON COUNTY SUPERVISOR.
THE SEAT HELD FOR MANY YEARS BY REPUBLICAN JACK WILLEY IS UP FOR ELECTION THIS YEAR. WILLEY IS SEEKING RE-ELECTION TO ANOTHER TERM.
NO DEMOCRAT FILED PETITION PAPERS BEFORE THE DEADLINE FOR THE POSITION. HOWEVER, BY LAW, SOMEONE CAN BE NOMINATED BY A COUNTY CONVENTION MEETING. AND, UP FOR CONSIDERATION MONDAY NIGHT, TWO DEMOCRATS WHO HAVE INDICATED THEY WOULD RUN FOR THE SEAT AS AN OFFICIAL CANDIDATE IF ELECTED AT THE SPECIAL DEMOCRATIC MEETING. ONE IS JACK ROSENBERG, MAQUOKETA BUSINESSMAN (OWNS JR'S WINE AND SPIRITS) AND PAST MAYOR OF MAQUOKETA AND PAST MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCILMAN. ALSO INTERESTED IN RUNNING, PAUL HAHLE, ALSO A MAQUOKETA BUSINESSMAN (OWNER OF THE OLD LUMBER YARD) AND A CURRENT MEMBER OF THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL. PARTY SUNNY, DRY AND HOT TODAY...IN 90'S.

THE JACKSON COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT AND AREA HUMANE SOCIETIES SEIZED 55 ANIMALS (INCLUDING FOUR COUGARS AND A BLACK BEAR) FROM A RURAL MAQUOKETA HOME LAST NIGHT.
THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT HAD RECEIVED COMPLAINTS ABOUT ANIMALS WHICH HAD NOT BEEN CARED FOR. THE RESIDENCE IS THAT OF RANDY AND PAM GARIEN, 24922 - 81ST. STREET, RURAL MAQUOKETA.
WHEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES WENT TO THE DOOR, NO ONE ANSWERED.
A VETERINARIAN WITH THE LOCAL AUTHORITIES SAID SHE SAW HORSES IN A FIELD WITH AN ABUNDANCE OF CLUTTER, INCLUDING GLASS AND METAL OBJECTS. ONE HORSE HAD A LACERATED LEG WHICH DID NOT APPEAR TO BE HEALING WELL. SHE SAID THERE WAS ALSO A MINIMAL AMOUNT OF WATER FOR THE HORSES AND LACK OF HAY AND ANY TYPE OF FEED.
AND SOME OF THE HORSES WERE UNDERWEIGHT. THE BLACK BEAR WAS IN A CAGE AND THE FLOOR OF THE CAGE HAD OVER A FOOT OF THE BEAR'S OWN FECES. THERE WAS NO FOOD OR WATER IN THE CAGE.
SHE RECOMMENDED REMOVAL OF ALL THE ANIMALS. TAKEN WERE
11 HORSES, TWO COUGARS, A BLACK BEAR, TWO FOX, TWO CATS, 12 DOGS, 8 PUPPIES AND 15 CHICKENS. THE COUGARS AND BLACK BEAR WERE TRANQUILIZED IN THE FENCED IN AREAS BEFORE THEY WERE REMOVED.
CHARGES HAVE NOT BEEN FILED AGAINST THE GARIENS, BUT MAY BE LATER.

IN BUSINESS NEWS, BRAD DEERY OF BURLINGTON,OWNER OF BRAD DEERY MOTORS IN MAQUOKETA, LAST WEEK ANNOUNCED THAT THE DEERY FAMILY HAS PURCHASED ANOTHER DEALERSHIP IN CEDAR RAPIDS.
THE DEERY'S HAVE TAKEN POSSESSION OF THE JIM MILLER NISSAN AND SUBARU DEALERSHIP ON COLLINS ROAD. THE DEERY'S NOW HAVE EIGHT DEALERSHIPS. BESIDES THE MAQUOKETA LOCATION, OTHER DEALERSHIPS ARE IN WATERLOO, BURLINGTON, WEST BURLINGTON, CARLISLE, TWO IN CEDAR FALLS AND NOW IN CEDAR RAPIDS.

BOB AND BEV ENGEL WERE AT THE GREAT JONES COUNTY FAIR SUNDAY NIGHT AND BEV'S NAME WAS DRAWN DURING THE GRANDSTAND ENTERTAINMENT AND SHE WON A ONE WEEK TRIP FOR TWO TO PARIS.

HERB CLAUSSEN OF DUBUQUE, RETIRED, AND AN AVID GOLFER, SHOT A HOLE-IN-ONE YESTERDAY AT A COURSE IN DUBUQUE. HIS FIRST!
HIS DAUGHTER-IN-LAW IS MY DAUGHTER, LONNA, WHO WORKS AT THE MAQUOKETA STATE BANK AND LIVES WITH HUSBAND AND SON JACOB, AGE NEARLY 4, IN BETTENDORF. HERB WAS PRETTY PLEASED. CONGRATULATIONS HERB!

THE GRAND CHAMPION STEER NAMED YESTERDAY AT THE CLINTON COUNTY FAIR WAS SHOWN BY JUSTINA FROST, OF DEWITT, WHO WILL
BE A SENIOR AT DEWITT HIGH SCHOOL THIS FALL. HER PARENTS ARE JOEL FROST AND A.J. KUNDE. JOEL GRADUATED FROM MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL AND HAS BEEN THE AG AND FFA HEAD AT NORTHEAST HIGH SCHOOL IN GOOSELAKE THE LAST 8 YEARS.

THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL HAD NOW DECIDED TO KEEP THE INTERSECTION OF QUARRY AND MAIN A FOUR-WAY STOP, WITH NO
STOP AND GO LIGHTS. THE OLD LIGHTS ARE NOT REPAIRABLE.
TEMPORARY SIGNS ARE NOW IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION.

MEGAN FLYNN IS THE 2006 JACKSON COUNTY FAIR QUEEN, CHOOSEN DURING CEREMONIES YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AT THE FAIRGROUNDS.
SHE WAS ONE OF 8 COMPETING AND IS THE DAUGHTER OF STEVE AND JUNE FLYNN OF MAQUOKETA AND A 2006 GRADUATE OF MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL. SHE PLANS TO ATTEND IOWA STATE THIS FALL.

A DEVELOPER IS PROPOSING A CONDOMINIUM PROJECT FOR BELLEVUE THAT COULD DOUBLE THE VALUE OF THE TOWN. A.J. SPEIGEL WANTS TO BUILD 300 UPSCALE CONDOS NORTH OF TOWN, ON CHOICE LAND HE OWNS NEXT TO THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER, WHERE A HUGE ANHYDROUS AMMONIA TANK STOOD FOR MANY YEARS. HE WOULD BUILD 4 STORY CONDOS.
HE CURRENTLY IS BUILDING AN EIGHT UNIT COMPLEX IN DOWNTOWN BELLEVUE AND ALSO HAS PLANS FOR CONDOS IN DUBUQUE. HE OWNS A LARGE SUCCESSFUL FACTORY IN DUBUQUE COUNTY, AND RECENTLY
PURCHASED A LARGE INDUSTRIAL BUILDING IN MAQUOKETA'S INDUSTRIAL PARK.

THE CITY COUNCIL HAS DECIDED TO GO AHEAD WITH AN EXPANSION PLAN FOR THE FIRE STATION IN MAQUOKETA. THE COST COULD GO TO AROUND $2-MILLION DOLLARS.

BOBBIE ALPERS OF RURAL MAQUOKETA HAS BEEN NAMED THE CHIEF JUDGE FOR IOWA'S 7TH DISTRICT, WHICH INCLUDES JACKSON AND 4 NEIGHBORING COUNTIES. SHE WILL REPLACE MAQUOKETA NATIVE
DAVE SCHOENTHALER OF DAVENPORT, WHO HAS HELD THE CHIEF JUDGE POSITION FOR 3 YEARS. JUDGE ALPERS IS THE FIRST WOMAN JUDGE TO BE NAMED THE CHEIF JUDGE. SHE AND HER HUSBAND KURT ULLRICH LIVE NORTHWEST OF MAQUOKETA, OFF THE CAVES ROAD. HER FATHER IS HAROLD ALPERS, OF DAVENPORT, WHO RAN THE MAQUOKETA FAREWAY STORE FOR MANY YEARS UNTIL RETIRING. DAVID SCHOENTHALER RETIRES THIS SUMMER AFTER BEING A JUDGE FOR 14 YEARS AND HE AND HIS WIFE WILL MOVE TO VENICE, FLORIDA. HE WAS WITH HIS DAD
IN THE LAW FIRM HERE IN TOWN UNTIL BEING APPOINTED JUDGE IN THE DISTRICT.

BECKY AND BOB SONSTEGARD OF MAQUOKETA HAD A GIRL MONDAY AT THE LOCAL HOSPITAL. GRANDMOTHER IS IRMAGARD TEDROW OF MAQUOKETA.

THE MAQUOKETA GIRLS PLAYED A GREAT GAME LAST NIGHT AT MANCHESTER AGAINST #2 RATED WEST DELAWARE , BUT LOST 2 TO 0.
BOTH RUNS WERE UNEARNED AS A RESULT OF PASSED BALLS.

RIDICULOUS DAY WAS A SUCCESS YESTERDAY, BUT SHORTENED BY RAIN DURING THE NOON HOUR.

PITCHED THE WHOLE GAME AND ALLOWED ONLY A FEW HITS. THE CARDINALS LED ALL THE WAY, AND WERE AHEAD 2 TO 1 WHEN STARTING THE LAST HALF OF THE 7TH (FINAL) INNING. TWO OUTS QUICKLY.
MAQUOKETA WAS ONE OUT AWAY FROM THE WIN. THEN THE WAHLERT BOYS GOT 2 HITS AND WITH RUNNERS ON 2ND AND 3RD, THEIR PITCHER GOT ANOTHER HIT, DROVE IN 2 RUNS AND DUBUQUE WON 3 TO 2.

A THEIF, TOOK A BIBLE FROM A PARKED VEHICLE AT THE MAQUOKETA FAMILY CLINIC, OWNED BY KATHLEEN KILBURG. THE MAQUOKETA POLICE WILL INVESTIGATE.

A GOOD FAITHFUL READER OF THIS REPORT, JOHN JONES, SR., HAS MOVED WITH HIS WIFE, TO AN ASSISTED LIVING APARTMENT IN PELLA.
JOHN, AGE 90, WORKED FOR CLINTON ENGINES AND THEN AS A
LUTHERAN INSURANCE AGENT UNTIL RETIREMENT. WE REMEMBER JUST A FEW YEARS AGO, WHEN HE SKY-DIVED AT THE MAQUOKETA AIRPORT. THEY HAVE A HOME IN PHOENIX FOR WINTER LIVING AND IN PELLA, WILL BE NEAR DAUGHTER BARB'S FAMILY. SUMMERTIME WEATHER. IT WAS 98 YESTERDAY, BUT NOT AS WARM
TODAY. STORMS LAST NIGHT, BUT WENT AROUND MAQUOKETA.
THE HEAT IS CAUSING SOME ASPHALT BLOW-OUTS ON THE HIGHWAYS.

THE MAQUOKETA BOYS BASEBALL TEAM DEFEATED DEWITT LAST FRIDAY NIGHT IN TOURNAMENT PLAY AND WAS SCHEDULED TO PLAY DUBUQUE WAHLERT NEXT. BUT THAT GAME LAST NIGHT HERE IN TOWN, HAD TO BE POSTPONED BECAUSE OF THREATENING WEATHER, ESPECIALLY LIGHTNING. AFTER WAITING FOR ABOUT 90 MINUTES, IT WAS DECIDED TO POSTPONE THE GAME UNTIL TONIGHT.

SPEAKING OF BASEBALL......KMAQ TRAVEL TOOK A BUS TO ST. LOUIS SUNDAY AND I HOSTED THE TRIP, WITH ABOUT 50 ON THE BUS. FOR MOST OF US, OUR FIRST LOOK AT THE NEW STADIUM. NICE STADIUM.
IT WAS HOT...99, BUT MOST HAD SEATS IN THE SHADE. MY SEAT WAS
IN THE SUN ALL AFTERNOON. LONG DAY....FUN....ESPECIALLY SINCE THE CARDINALS WON THEIR 7TH IN A ROW. ATE AT CRACKER BARRELL ON WAY DOWN AT BREAFAST TIME AND AT STEAK AND SHAKE ON THE WAY HOME. NEXT TRIP IS AUGUST 10TH TO MILWAUKEE TO SEE THE CUBS PLAY THE BREWERS. BOX SEATS. TICKET AND BUS $59 AND WE HAVE LOTS OF SEATS LEFT. THEN WE HAVE ANOTHER TRIP IN AUGUST TO ST. LOUIS, BUT IT IS SOLD OUT.

TWO COUNTY FAIRS START THURSDAY, IN DEWITT AND MONTICELLO....AND BOTH RUN THROUGH SUNDAY. KMAQ WILL BE BROADCASTING FROM BOTH.

THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL BOARD SIGNED A CONTRACT LAST NIGHT WITH AMENT, INC. OF CEDAR RAPIDS, TO DESIGN A NEW GYM AND REMODEL THE CAFETERIA AT THE HIGH SCHOOL. THE FEES ARE NOT TO EXCEED $190,000 WITH AN ADDITIONAL $5,000 TO LOOK AT GEOTHERMAL HEATING AND COOLING. THE TIMELINE CALLS FOR THE BID OPENING FOR THE PROJECT AT THE END OF JANUARY. THE ARC WILL HAVE A NEW GYM TOO.....SO.....TWO NEW GYMS WILL GO UP IN MAQUOKETA NEXT YEAR.

NICOLE AND RYAN JOHNSON OF MAQUOKEA ARE PARENTS OF A GIRL, BORN LATE LAST WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT THE LOCAL HOSPITAL. GRANDPARENTS ARE NEIL AND DEB JOHNSON OF MAQUOKETA.

EXPECTED TOMMOROW THROUGH EARLY NEXT WEEK.

MARK WILLEY WAS FOUND GUILTY THIS AFTERNOON IN DISTRICT COURT IN CLINTON. HE WILL BE SENTENCED TO PRISON IN LATE JULY.

DANIELLE SCHWEIN, AGE 19, OF GERMAN STREET IN MAQUOKETA
WAS CHARGED TODAY WITH THEFT IN THE FIRST DEGREE. SHE IS ACCUSED OF TAKING MERCHANDISE AND MONEY FROM THE FAMILY DOLLAR STORE ON WEST PLATT IN MAQUOKETA, WHERE SHE WORKED.
THE STOLEN ITEMS AND CASH TOTALLED $12,020, AND TAKEN BETWEEN LAST DECEMBER AND THIS MONTH. SHE WAS TAKEN TO JAIL, AN ATTORNEY WAS APPOINTED TO REPRESENT HER AND SHE WAS RELEASED ON $13,000 UNSECURED BOND.

A HALF-INCH OF RAIN EARLY THIS MORNING...
AND CLOUDY AND LIGHT RAIN A COUPLE TIMES TODAY AND COOL.
RAIN STILL IN FORECAST FOR TONIGHT AND THEN...FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK AND WEEKEND...NO RAIN AND HOT. SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, WE CAN EXPECT MID 90'S WEATHER.

THE MARK WILLEY TRIAL WENT ALL DAY WITH ABOUT 7 WITNESSES.
HIS SISTER, WHO HE HAD THE ENCOUNTER WITH, WAS THE FIRST WITNESS AND TOLD HOW MARK STABBED HER WITH A KNIFE IN THREE PLACES AND HOW SHE THOUGHT SHE WOULD DIE, BUT MANAGED TO CRAWL OUT OF THE HOUSE TO THE SIDEWALK, WHERE SHE WAS BLEEDING WHEN DEPUTY SCHROEDER WAS THE FIRST OFFICER TO ARRIVE. WILLEY ALSO TOOK THE STAND TODAY. SO DID DR. PAUL KOOB AND DAVID STOCKHAM (WHO SAW WILLEY RUN THROUGH AN ALLEY) AND CURT FELDERMAN WHO FOLLOWED WILLEY FROM THE HOME WITH HIS CAR AND AND ALERTED POLICE.
GOOD CHANCE THE TRIAL WILL GO TO THE JURY TOMORROW AND MAYBE THERE COULD BE A VERDICT BEFORE THE DAY IS OVER.

MENS AND WOMENS RESTROOMS AT THE MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC COMPLEX WERE VANDALIZED OVERNIGHT. PAPER DISPENSERS BROKE OFF THE WALL .....A REPLACEMENT COST OF $567.
TOILET PAPER STUFFED IN THE STOOLS AND SINKS ... AND WATER TURNED-ON AND LEFT RUNNING. THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES.

TWO MEN HAD A FIGHT WITH A THIRD AT 11:30 LAST NIGHT ON SOUTH SECOND STREET. NO SERIOUS INJURIES. THE TWO APPEARED IN COURT AND RELEASED ON $1,950 UNSECURED BOND PENDING COURT ACTION ON JULY 17TH. THE TWO WERE TIM RABINEAU OF ANDREW, AGE 31, AND VICTOR VELEZ, AGE 35, OF MAQUOKETA. THE MAN THEY HIT WAS
WILL SIMONS, NO AGE GIVEN.

THE MAQUOKETA GIRLS SOFTBALL TEAM LAST NIGHT HOSTED NUMBER ONE RANKED WEST DELAWARE OF MANCHESTER IN A DOUBLE-HEADER.
IN THE FIRST GAME, MAQUOKETA UPSET WEST DELAWARE 2 TO 1 AND IN GAME 2, THE CARDS LOST 6 TO 1. MAQUOKETA IS NOW 29 AND 11 AND FINISHED 13 AND 7 IN THE WAMAC.

THE MAQUOKETA BOYS ALSO PLAYED WEST DELAWARE THERE...AND THE WEST DELAWARE BOYS ARE ALSO RANKED #1. THEY SHUT OUT THE CARDINALS 10 TO 0 IN FIRST GAME AND MAQUOKETA THEN LOST THE SECOND GAME, 5 TO 0. MAQUOKETA IS NOW 9 AND 21 OVERALL AND 5 AND 13 IN THE WAMAC.

A MAQUOKETA MAN WAS CHARGED AFTER HIS VEHICLE ROLLED ON 150TH STREET, 2 MILES NORTHWEST OF ANDREW, SATURDAY NIGHT.
PAUL VAN SPRECKEN, AGE 54, WAS CITED FOR FAILURE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL. HE REFUSED MEDICAL ATTENTION. DAMAGES TO HIS FORD PICKUP WERE ESTIMATED AT $9,000.

MARANDA BONNEY AND JERRY CLAGG OF MAQUOKETA ARE PARENTS OF A BOY BORN LAST FRIDAY MORNING AT THE LOCAL HOSPITAL.

SABULA RESIDENTS GO TO THE POLLS TUESDAY TO ELECT A MAYOR.
THEY HAVE HAD TWO MAYORS RESIGN THIS YEAR AND HAVE AN INTERIM MAYOR NOW.

YARDA JOSEPHINE McGREGOR, AGE 84, OF MAQUOKETA, DIED LAST FRIDAY AT A DAVENPORT CARE CENTER. HER FULL OBITUARY CAN BE READ AT

CHARGES ARE PENDING IN AN ACCIDENT IN WHICH AT LEAST ONE STOLEN VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT TODAY. DEPUTY KEVIN SCOTT SAID WILLIAM ROBERTS, 29, OF RURAL MAQUOKETA WAS DRIVING NORTH ON 125TH AVENUE AT 12:10 A.M. THIS MORNING AND LOST CONTROL, WENT INTO A DITCH, DROVE THROUGH A GATE AND THEN FLIPPED AND ROLLED TWICE. ROBERTS ADMITTED TO DEPUTIES HE TOOK THE VEHICLE FROM VICKY HELTON OF RURAL MAQUOKETA. DAMAGES, $9000 TO THE FORD EXPLORER. IN A RELATED INCIDENT DEPUTY RUSS LONG SAID AT 12:02 A.M. A VEHICLE WAS EASTBOUND ON 16TH STREET....A GRAVEL ROAD.....AND SLID THROUGH A STOP SIGN AT A T-INTERSECTION WITH 125TH AVENUE....AND IT BECAME STUCK IN AN EMBANKMENT.
LONG SAID THE IMPLIED OWNER SAID HE WAS A PASSENGER AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT, BUT WOULD NOT GIVE HIS NAME. THE IMPLIED OWNER DID STEAL ANOTHER VEHICLE, OWNED BY HELTON, AND QUICKLY ROLLED AND FLIPPED THAT VEHICLE. THE MAQUOKETA RESCUE SQUAD WAS CALLED TO ASSIST IN A SEARCH FOR A DRIVER, BUT NO ONE WAS FOUND. THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES.

A MOTORCYCLE RALLY WILL GO ON AS SCHEDULED THIS WEEKEND ON A BLUFF OVERLOOKING SABULA. THE JACKSON COUNTY SUPERVISORS YESTERDAY AFTERNOON TOOK NO ACTION TO REVOKE THE PERMIT TO CONDUCT THE RALLY.
THE FIRST RALLY WAS HELD MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND AND NUMEROUS NOISE COMPLAINTS WERE REGISTERED FROM SABULA AND SAVANNA. THE PROMOTER TOLD THE SUPERVISORS SAID HE HAS MADE SOME CHANGES TO HELP REDUCE THE NOISE.

THE CELEBRATION IOWA SINGERS AND JAZZ BAND WILL MAKE A RETURN TRIP TO MAQUOKETA NEXT MONTH AT THE OHNWARD FINE ARTS CENTER AND SPONSORED BY KMAQ. THE 2-HOUR SHOW WILL BE ON THURSDAY NIGHT, AUGUST 3RD, STARTING AT 7:15 P.M. TICKETS ARE $10 IN ADVANCE AND $14 AT THE DOOR.
LAST YEAR, THE GROUP PERFORMED TO A NEARLY A SOLD-OUT CROWD AND IT WAS A GREAT SHOW. I EXPECT WE WILL HAVE A SELL-OUT THIS YEAR. THE 37 HIGH SCHOOL MUSICIANS (CHOSEN FROM 150 WHO AUDITIONED) WILL BE STAYING IN LOCAL HOMES. TWENTY HOMES ARE NEED. IF YOU CAN HOST TWO STUDENTS, OR ADULT STAFF MEMBERS, CALL KMAQ. THE HOST HOME RECEIVES 2 COMPLIMENTARY TICKETS. THIS YEAR'S SHOW OPENS WITH A MUSICAL THEATRE SET FEATURING THREE MUSICALS WITH A COMMON STORY LINE: WIZARD OF OZ...WIZ...AND WICKED. A MAQUOKETA NATIVE, GREGORY W. BERG, 35, OF ONAWA, IOWA, DIED TUESDAY DUE TO INJURIES IN A PICKUP-TRAIN ACCIDENT NEAR ONAWA. HIS FATHER AND STEP-MOTHER, LORIN AND PHYLLIS BERG, LIVE IN CHARLOTTE. HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE AND A DAUGHTER.

EARL CAMPBELL, AGE 77, OF MAQUOKETA, DIED THIS MORNING AT THE LOCAL HOSPITAL. THE FULL OBITUARY IS AT www.carsonandson.com

ON THIS DATE IN 1982, THE PARKING METERS WERE RETIRED IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA. AND THERE WAS A CELEBRATION! THE FUN INCLUDED A PIE-THROWING AUCTION AND I PAID $14.00 TO THROW A PIE IN THE FACE OF THE LATE BOB MELVOLD, PUBLISHER OF THE MAQUOKETA NEWSPAPER. THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL MEET MONDAY NIGHT FOR A SHORT MEETING. THE COUNCIL GAVE CITY ATTORNEY MARK LAWSON, OF BELLEVUE, A 3 PER CENT RAISE TO $26,300 IN THE NEW YEAR WHICH BEGINS SEPT 1ST. THAT'S FOR ALL PARTTIME WORK AS NEEDED BY THE CITY AND IS IN LINE WITH OTHER CITY EMPLOYEE RAISES.
ON THE RECOMENDATION OF THE COUNCIL FINANCE COMMITTEE, THE COUNCIL DECLINED AN OFFER TO TRADE SEVEN ACRES OF LAND EAST OF THE FORMER CLINTON ENGINES OFFICE BUILDING FOR THE FORMER JACK AND JILL BUILDING. THE OWER OF THE FORMER SUPER MARKET BUILDING ON WEST PLATT HAD MADE THE PROPOSAL SAYING HE WAS INTERESTED IN THE LAND FOR BUILDING SOME SENIOR HOUSING.

DEBRA GOODWIN, AGE 32, OF MAQUOKETA WAS CHARGED WITH ANIMAL NEGLECT. MAQUOKETA POLICE OFFICER DAN FURLONG SAID GOODWIN ALLOWED A CONFIEND DOG TO GO WITHOUT SUFFICIENT WATER AND FOOD FROM JUNE 1-15 AT 320 EDDY PLACE IN MAQUOKETA.

FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD THURSDAY IN DOVER, OHIO, FOR ALEXANDRA ROSE GATELARO, AGE 9, OF DOVER. SHE DIED SUNDAY AS THE RESULT OF INJURIES SUSTAINED IN AN ACCIDENT WHILE RIDING HER BICYCLE. SHE IS THE DAUGHTER OF ANTHONY AND JULIE EWING GATELARO OF DOVER. JULIE EWING GRADUATED FROM MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL.

THE MAQUOKETA ROTARY CLUB WILL HAVE THEIR 31ST ANNUAL BAND CONCERT AND ICE CREAM SOCIAL FOR SENIOR CITIZENS A WEEK FROM TODAY, AT THE FAIRGROUNDS, WITH MUSIC BY THE TIMBER CITY COMMUNITY BAND, DIRECTED BY JAY KAHN.
JOHN GILROY, WHO HAS AN ACCOUNTINY BUSINESS IN MAQUKETA AND LIVES IN DEWITT, IS THE NEW PRESIDENT OF ROTARY. HE TOOK OVER JULY 1ST, WHEN NANCY MOORE'S ONE-YEAR TERM EXPIRED.
JENNEFER CONNOALLY CONTINUES AS SECRETARY AND ASHER SCHROEDER WILL CONTINUE TO BE THE TREASURER.

KMAQ HAS A BUS GOING TO THE CUBS-BREWERS GAME SUNDAY, IN MILWAUKEE.

HOT AND HUMID TODAY....HIGH 90.
WE GOT OVER AN INCH OF RAIN EARLY THIS MORNING.

MAQUOKETA FIREMEN WERE CALLED INTO ACTION AT 4:50 THIS MORNING TO THE MARK NIENKIRK RESIDENCE BETWEEN IRON HILL AND EMILINE.
THE FIRE WAS IN A SHEET METAL POLE BUILDING, ABOUT 30 BY 60 FEET. IT WAS STRUCK BY LIGHTNING AND ALL ITS CONTENTS WERE DESTROYED, INCLUDING AN A.T.V., SOME LAWN MOWERS, SHOP TOOLS AND A CHEVY S-10 PARKED OUTSIDE THE BUILDING. TOTAL LOSS ESTIMATED AT
$20,000.

A MAQUOKETA MAN, TERRY BRONSON, IS THE LUCKY WINNER OF A NEW 2006 PONTIAC 2-DOOR SPORTS CAR, GIVEN AWAY LAST NIGHT IN BELLEVUE, IN A RAFFLE CONNECTED WITH THE CITY'S ANNUAL HERITAGE DAYS CELEBRATION.

THE MAQUOKETA FIREWORKS SATURDAY NIGHT, BECAUSE OF A POWER FAILURE DURING THE STOCK CAR RACES, DID NOT START UNTIL AROUND 11 O'CLOCK. THE RACES WERE FINISHED FIRST, AND THEN THE 20-MINUTE FIREWORKS CAME NEXT, SPONSORED BY FIREWORKS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE MAQUOKETA AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. BELLEVUE'S 45-MINUTE FIREWORKS SHOW STARTED AT 10:15 LAST NIGHT AND CLINTON COUNTY'S $22,000 DISPLAY WILL BE PUT ON TOMORROW NIGHT AT GRAND MOUND. THERE WILL BE NO 4TH OF JULY EVENTS IN MAQUOKETA
TOMORROW.
