THE KMAQ RADIO-TELETHON WAS A BIG SUCCESS YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.
OVER $32,000 WAS RAISED FOR THE SUNSHINE PRE-SCHOOL AND DAYCARE
CENTER IN MAQUOKETA.

MAQUOKETA POLICE ARE ASKING FOR HELP FROM THE PUBLIC ON LOCATING TWO MEN WHO TOOK $10 FROM TWO 11 YEAR OLD GIRLS WALKING ON THE SIDEWALK NEAR BRIGG'S SCHOOL. THEY STOPPED THEIR TRUCK, APPROACHED THE 2 GIRLS, ASKED FOR MONEY AND ONE GIRL HAD $10 AND GAVE IT TO THEM. THE GIRLS THEN TOOK OFF RUNNING. THE TWO THIEFS WERE DRVING A BLUSIH-PURPLE TRUCK.

A MAQUOKETA SQUAD CAR WAS HIT IN THE FRONT FENDER AT 1:15 THIS MORNING IN THE JACK AND JILL PARKING LOT. OFFICER PAT FIER WAS IN THE LOT, READY TO LEAVE...NOTICED A CAR COMING INTO THE LOT...AND AS HE WAITED, THE CAR RAN INTO HIS SQUAD CAR. THE DRIVER, JANINE GRIFFIN, 36, OF MAQUOKETA, SAID SHE LOOKED DOWN AT THE HEATER CONTROLS AS SHE MADE A WIDE TURN INTO THE LOT. DAMAGE TO THE SQUAD CAR, $1,000 AND DAMAGE TO HER CAR, $2,000.

THE MISS MAQUOKETA RIVER CONTEST SATURDAY NIGHT, AT THE METHODIST CHURCH WAS WON BY AN EAST MOLINE TEEN-AGER, KATIE SYNDER, AGE 18, A STUDENT AT ST. AMBROSE. THERE WERE 5 OTHER GIRLS IN THE PAGEANT, INCLUDING TWO FROM MAQUOKETA. SNYDER WILL NOW COMPETE IN THE MISS IOWA PAGEANT IN JUNE.

MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL LORENE DYKSTRA HAS SUBMITTED HER RESIGNATION...A JOB SHE HAS HAD FOR 5 YEARS. SHE SAID SHE CAN NO LONGER PUT IN THE KIND OF HOURS THE POSITION DEMANDS.

BERTHA SCHWENKER, AGE 88, DIED SATURDAY AT THE LOCAL HOSPITAL.
SHE HAD FARMED FOR MANY YEARS WITH HER HUSBAND. SHE IS SURVIVED BY 2 DAUGHTERS, MARY ANN HEINZEL AND KAY MANUEL, BOTH OF MAQUOKETA AND 3 SONS, TOM AND JERRY, BOTH OF MAQUOKETA AND RICHARD OF MILAN, MICHIGAN...ALSO 18 GRAND AND 11 GREAT GRANDCHILDEN...PLUS 2 SISTERS, MERETA RIPPLE AND LEONA MAYBERRY, BOTH OF MAQUOKETA.
