THE NEW MAQUOKETA FFA PRESIDENT FOR THE 2017-2018 SCHOOL YEAR,
KATE SAMPLES, DAUGHTER OF PAUL AND IRENE SAMPLES. SHE ASSUMED
HER OFFICE LAST NIGHT AT THE 89TH ANNUAL PARENT-MEMBER RECOGNITION NIGHT AT GROSSMAN HALL IN DELMAR. AROUND 115
WERE IN ATTENDANCE FOR DINNER AND AFTER, A VERY GOOD PROGRAM
ON THE ACCOMPLISMENTS OF THE PAST YEAR, AND THERE WERE MANY.
THE MAQUOKETA CHAPTER IS ONE OF THE BEST IN IOWA, UNDER THE
DIRECTION OF FFA ADVISOR GARY BRUNS AND HIS ASSISTANT ADVISOR
JACKI CROWLEY. THE FFA ALUMNI, (PRESIDENT SKOTT GENT), AGAIN
THIS YEAR AWARDED SOME NICE SCHLORSHIPS: $1,000 TO BLAIR BENNIS AND ISAIAH MILLER, $750 TO ABBY RUBEL AND COURTNEY BECKER, AND $500 ONES TO KYLE DAVISON AND MATT BAKER. SENIORS GOING TO COLLEGE CAN CONTINUE ON IN FFA AND ALSO CAN JOIN THE MAQUOKETA FFA
ALUMNI.
STOPPED AT BELLEVUE SUNDAY TO TAKE THESE PHOTOS AT THE NEW VETERANS MEMORIAL PLAZA DOWNTOWN, NEXT TO THE SUBWAY
RESTAURANT. THE "FREEDOM ROCK" WAS UNVEILED RECENTLY WITH
THE PAINTING BY GREENFIELD ARTIST RAY SORENSEN. IT SHOWS A PADDLER-WHEELER LOADING UP BELLEVUE UNION SOLDIERS IN 1861 TO TAKE THEM DOWN RIVER TO FIGHT IN THE CIVIL WAR. THE PAINTING WAS TAKEN FROM A PHOTOGRAPH OF THE U.S.S. HENDERSON. THE PLAZA HAS FLAG POLES BEHIND AND THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER IN THE BACKGROUND,
AND HUNDREDS (NEARLY 800) PAVERS, EACH FEATURING THE NAME, RANK,
AND YEAR OF MILITARY SERVICE BY PAST OR STILL LIVING JACKSON COUNTY VETERAN. A VERY IMPRESSIVE PLAZA AND ROCK. THERE IS GOING TO BE A ROCK IN EVERYONE OF IOWA'S 99 COUNTIES.
