THE TALK OF THE TOWN IN MAQUOKETA IS THE THAT THE JACK AND JILL STORE IN MAQUOKETA WILL CLOSE IN LESS THAN 3 WEEKS. THE STORE ANNOUNCED THE DECISION TO EMPLOYEES FRIDAY. IT WAS STARTED OVER 40 YEARS AGO BY BROTHER PAUL (DECEASED) AND FRANCIS SKEFFINGTON OF DEWITT, IN THE BUILDING THAT IS NOW THE SHOWROOM OF BRAD DEERY MOTORS. THE STORE MOVED TO A NEW BUILDING ON WEST PLATT OVER 30 YEAS AGO.
MAQUOKETA WILL CONTINUE TO HAVE THE FAREWAY STORE, THE NEARLY NEW DICK'S SUPER MARKET AND ALDI'S.....AND IN A YEAR WAL MART WILL HAVE A HUGE GROCERY STORE WITH THEIR REGULAR STORE.
SO, MANY ARE NOT SURPRISED AT JACK AND JILL CLOSING. IT HAS BEEN ABOUT 15 MONTHS SINCE DICK'S OPENED.
HERE ARE SOME THINGS BEING TALKED ABOUT. MOVE THE FIRE STATION TO JACK AND JILL. OR MOVE THE FIRE STATION AND POLICE STATION TO THE WAL MART STORE WHEN IT BECOMES EMPTY.
WORD IS, THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT IN WITH POLICE DEPARTMENT, COULD USE MORE SPACE. THERE HAS BEEN RUMOR THAT THEISEN'S WAS LOOKING AT (MAYBE ALREADY HAS PURCHASED) THE WAL MART STORE.
THE FOR SALE SIGN AT WAL MART IS GONE. IF FIRE DEPARTMENT MOVED, WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO THAT BUILDING? A YOUTH CENTER WAS ONE SUGGESTION I HEARD. IS KFC THINKING ABOUT COMING BACK TO MAQUOKETA? THAT'S ALSO A RUMOR.
B & C LIQUOR IS MOVING TO THE FORMER CORNELIUS FARM STORE BUILDING ACROSS THE STREET, A MUCH LARGER BUILDING. FOR A FEW YEARS, IT WAS A NAPA AUTO PARTS STORE. A LITTLE DISCOUNT GROCERY STORE HAS BEEN IN THERE FOR OVER A YEAR AND SATURDAY, HAD AN AUCTION.
