SATURDAY DAILY

WAS ON TWO DAYS OF VACATION TO MILWAUKEE THURSDAY AND FRIDAY, REASON
FOR NO DAILY EACH DAY.
SAW THE CARDINAL GET BADLY BEATEN BY THE BREWERS.     BUT SINCE I AM
A NATIVE OF WISCONSIN, THE BREWERS ARE MY 2ND TEAM.   YES..BROKE MY
GLASSES AND WOULD HAVE BETTER TO NOT HAVE THEM AT ALL FOR WHAT
I SAW FOR 8 INNINGS...LEFT GAME IN TOP OF 9TH.   HAD GOOD $44 SEATS EACH,
AND $20 FOR PARKING.    $8 BEER.  $5  WATER.   DINNER AT FRIDAYS IN STADIUM
WAS  EXCELLENT.    ALSO SAW MY BROTHER WHO IS RETIRED AND LIVES THERE,
BUT BECAUSE HE HAD A SUDDEN HEALTH ISSUE, DID NOT GO TO THE GAME
WITH US.  HAD BREAKFAST WITH HIM NEXT MORNING AFTER STAYING OVER
NIGHT AT A PACKED HYATT PLACE IN BUTLER WHERE HE LIVES, SMALLTOWN
SUBERB OF MILWAUKEE.
ROOF WAS CLOSED.  32,000 FANS.   THE FIRST PITCH OF GAME WAS A HOME RUN
BY CARDINAL 3RD BASEMAN MATT CARPENTER.   THE GAME WENT DOWN HILL
FROM THEN ON.   BEAUTIFUL STADIUM.     GO TO MADISON AND TAKE I-94 EAST
RIGHT TO STADIUM.    LOTS OF SOMMER HIGHWAY WORK SLOWS YOU DOWN,
SO IT IS A 4 HOUR TRIP.

ON WAY HOME, STOPPED AT FT. ATKINSON TO VISIT BOB BROWN.   MY FIRST AND
ONLY RADIO BOSS.   HIRED ME AT KMAQ IN 1958 AND MANAGED KMAQ FOR A YEAR
UNTIL HE TRANSFERRED TO NEW STATION AT FORT ATKINSON, WFAW, PUT ON AIR
BY SAME TRIO THAT THEN OWNED KMAQ.   BOB LOST HIS WIFE 2 YEARS AGO AND
NOW LIVES ALONE AT 97.      SPOTLESS NICE HOME.   HE IS SHARP WITH A COUPLE
HEALTH ISSUES HE IS DEALING WITH,  THANKS TO HELP FROM SON AND FAMILY IN
MADISON AND A DAUGHTER AND FAMILY NOT FAR AWAY EITHER.    IT WAS BOB
THAT WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR ESTABLISHING THE POLKA PARTY ON KMAQ
 NEARLY 60 YEARS AGO.

THIS IS WHAT THE NEW SMALLER MISSISSIPPI RIVER BRIDGE AT SABULA LOOKS
LIKE .. AS OF WEDNEDAY WHEN WE TOOK A LOOK AT IT.     LOTS TO DO BUT
SUPPOSED TO BE DONE BY LABOR DAY.
FERRY SERVICE HAS BEEN BUSY.    WILL GO BACK SOON FOR A FERRY RIDE.
ATE AT A NICE FAMILY RESTAURANT ON HIGHWAY  64 IN SABULA....CAN'T MISS
IT...HAS  A BIG "RESTAURANT" SIGN ON FRONT OF BUILDING.

TUESDAY RAIN-RAIN DAILY

MAQUOKETA HOSTED DEWITT FOR 4 GAMES LAST NIGHT AND DEWITT WON ALL
4.      IN BOYS BASEBALL, DEWITT SHUT OUT THE CARDS IN BOTH GAMES, AND IN
THE GIRLS DOUBLE-HEADER, THE CARDS SCORED  JUST 3 RUNS TOTAL AS DEWITT
WON BOTH.    MATT CLARK BROADCAST 2 OF THE 4 GAMES ON KMAQ.
HIS LAST TWO PLAY-BY-PLAY GAMES.    AFTER 8 YEARS, HE RESIGNED AS
THE VOICE OF THE CARDINALS ON KMAQ.     ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS IS THAT
HIS MOM AND DAD ARE MOVING TO CORALVILLE.    OVER THE YEARS, DOING
A GAME MENT BRINGING THE KIDS ALONG TO MAQUOKETA TO STAY WITH
THE GRANDPARENTS WHILE DOING THE GAME.      HE HAS DONE A GOOD JOB
AND WE WILL MISS HIM A LOT.    SO, WE WILL BE LOOKING FOR A NEW PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER HERE AT THE STATION.    THE FOOTBALL SEASON IS NOT
THAT FAR AWAY.

FRIDAY 90-DEGREE DAILY

THESE TWO BAR TENDERS ARE THE PROUD OWNERS OF MAQUOKETA'S  NEW EVENT
CENTER "THE OAKLAND MILL" JUST EAST OF MAQUOKETA.     IT WAS A FEW YEARS
AGO COSTELLO'S ART STUDEO,  THEN EVENT CENTER, AND HAS BEEN CLOSED SEVERAL YEARS DURING WHICH TIME MANY IMPROVEMENTS AND ENHANCEMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE, INSIDE AND OUT.   ABOVE, DR. (DUBUQUE DENTIST) LACEY
McDEVITT AND NICK SZEBENI, MANAGER OF OAKLAND MILL.   THEY LIVE UPSTAIRS AND HAVE TWO CHILDREN.    LACEY'S DAD IS LARRY McDEVITT, JACKSON COUNTY
SUPERVISOR.    HE DID MUCH OF THE WORK IN THE MILL, INCLUDING THE BEAUTIFUL WALNUT BAR.    LACEY GRADUATED FROM MCHS.
SO..LETS TAKE A LITTLE TOUR OF THE 1870'S MILL ON PRAIRIE CREEK.

THE BAR ABOVE ....BY LARRY, NOTICE THE TOP OF THE BAR.     LOTS OF  WORK WENT INTO BUILDING AND FINISHING THIS LIGHTED BAR.

ABOVE..SEATING FOR 32 IN UPSTAIRS LOFT.
PHOTO FROM UPPER LOFT LOOKING INTO THE MAIN DINING ROOM.
STAIRWAY FROM LOFT ABOVE.

THIS CORNER WAS USED FOR WINE TASTING TODAY, BUT IT IS THE KITCHEN
CORNER WHERE CATERERS WILL WORK GETTING READY TO SERVE LUNCH OR DINNER.
ALL FOOD FOR EVENTS NEED TO BE CATERED.

AT LEFT ABOVE, LARRY McDEVITT, FATHER OF LACEY, HUSBAND OF WENDY,
AND THE GUY THAT WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR MANY OF THE ENHANCEMENTS AT
OAKLAND MILL.
ST. REP. ANDY McKEAN AT RIGHT.

AT LEFT IS WENDY McDEVITT, WIFE OF LARRY.    THE TWO GUYS AT RIGHT
WERE GOING THROUGH TOWN AND HEARD THERE WAS FREE FOOD.

ON YESTERDAY'S DAILY REPORT,  THERE ARE A FEW OTHER PHOTOS TO LOOK
AT TAKEN AT THE MILL THURSDAY DURING A TOURISM CONFERENCE.
INCLUDING A NEW ONE OF THE BACK YARD PATIO AREA.

THURSDAY (WITH RAIN) DAILY

JACKSON COUNTY CITIZENS WILL GO TO THE POLLS TUESDAY, AUGUST 7TH TO VOTE ON A $6.95 MILLION DOLLAR BOND ISSUE FOR A NEW JAIL.
AT THE JAIL COMMITTEE MEETING  LAST NIGHT, MEMBERS AND CITIZENS WERE GIVEN THE TWO ABOVE,     THE JAIL BUILDING WOULD FACE SOUTH, FACE THE STREET LEADING TO WAL MART.         WHEN YOU LEAVE WAL MART GOING OUT OF PARKING LOT NORTHERLY, YOU MAKE A SHARP TURN TO LEFT AND GO WEST TO CITY-ROUTE HIGHWAY 61.     YOU CAN SEE, NORTH-SOUTH 61 IS MARKED AT LEFT.
THE JAIL WILL NOT FACE 61.     THE HOSPITAL ON SOUTH SIDE OF WAL MART
ALSO WILL NOT FACE 61.     TOO BAD, BUT HARD TO FIND LARGE PLOTS OF LAND
ON MUCH TRAVELED  HIGHWAYS AND STREETS  IS NOT AVAILABLE.
THIS IS NOT KNEW TO MAQUOKETA.    MANY OF THE CITY'S BEST BUILDINGS ARE
NOT VISABLE BY VISITORS OR TOURISTS.....CITY HALL, LIBRARY, FIRE STATION,
CURRENT HOSPITAL, COLLEGE, HIGH SCHOOL, YMCA, PRAIRIE CREEK PARK, AND THE NEW VETERANS MEMORIAL.
NEVERTHELESS, I AM GOING TO VOTE YES.   WE NEED A NEW JAIL.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL LAST NIGHT, NORTH SCOTT 8, MAQUOKETA 0.
SOFTBALL, MARION 6, MAQUOKETA 2.

WEDNESDAY DAILY

TODAY, NANCY AND I SPENT 3 HOURS (INCLUDING LUNCH) AT MAQUOKETA'S NEW EVENT CENTER....THE OAKLAND MILL....(FORMERLY COSTELLO'S OLD MILL).....JUST
EAST OF MAQUOKETA.    WE WERE THERE FOR THE EASTERN IOWA TOURISM
ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING, ALWAYS HELD AT THE HOME OF THE PRESIDENT AT THE END OF HIS TERM.     AND THE PRESIDENT OF THE EASTERN IOWA  TOURISM ASSOCIATION HAS BEEN DARYL PARKER OF BELLEVUE.   HE IS ALSO PRESIDENT FOR JACKSON COUNTY, AND FOR OVER 25 YEARS, HAS BEEN THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF JACKSON COUNTY CONSERVATION.   DURING THOSE YEARS HE HAS ALSO DONE A WEEKLY PROGRAM ON KMAQ CALLED "IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS".      WE WERE AT THE MEETING TO COVER IT FOR KMAQ OF COURSE AND ALSO BECAUSE BOTH KMAQ AND THE THEATRES ARE MEMBERS OF BOTH TOURISM ASSOCIATIONS.
BELOW, MY NAME TAG ON TODAY'S PROGRAM....
DARYL CONDUCTING THE MEETING AND SERVING ALSO AS EMCEE.
CARRIE KOELKER OF DYERSVILLE, THE PAID EXECUTIVE FOR THE ASSOCIATION MADE UP OF ALL THE EASTERN IOWA COUNTY TOURISM ASSOCIATIONS.    SHE  HAS
HELD THAT JOB FOR OVER 15 YEARS AND THIS YEAR DECIDED TO GET INTO
POLITICS AND THIS NOVEMBER WILL RUN AS A REPUBLICAN FOR THE SENATE
SEAT,  OPPOSING CURRENT STATE SENATOR TODD BOWMAN OF MAQUOKETA.

ST. REP. ANDY McKEAN OF ANAMOSA TALKED A FEW MINUTES ABOUT THE
IMPORTANCE OF TOURISM IN THE STATE AND SAID AN EFFORT WILL BE MADE NEXT SESSION TO GET MORE MONEY TO DO MORE TOURISM ADVERTISNG AND PROMOTION.     HE AND HIS WIFE WERE IN THE TOURISM BUSINESS YEARS AGO WHEN HE AND HIS WIFE CONNIE OWNED AND OPERATED A VERY POPULAR "BED AND BREAKFAST" IN ANAMOSA.

THE GUEST SPEAKER WAS THE GREATEST WRESTLING COACH OF ALL TIME,
ALL AT IOWA, DAN GABLE,  NOW  RETIRED.   HE SPOKE FOR NEARLY AN
HOUR BEFORE LUNCH.    IT WAS THE BEST PART OF TODAY'S MEETING FOR ME.
HE TALKED ABOUT MANY THINGS...ALL OFF-THE-CUFF.   INCLUDING TOURISM.
WAS CRITICAL OF MAQUOKETA BECAUSE WE HAVE NO SIGN SAYING BOYHOOD
HOME OF ERIC JUERGENS, TWO TIMES ALL AMERICAN AT  IOWA.    AND WHEN
HE STOPPED TO ASK AT CONVENIENCE STORE WHERE OAKLAND MILL WAS,
THE PEOPLE THERE HAD NOT HEARD OF IT.    HE HAS WRITTEN TWO BOOKS.
I BOUGHT ONE FOR  HERE AT KMAQ FOR ANYONE THAT WANTS TO READ IT, AND NANCY PURCHASED ONE FOR HER GRANDSON DERRICK FUGLSANG OF LaCROSSE, ALSO A  FORMER COLLEGE WRESTLING COACH.    THE DAN GABLE HALL OF FAME
MUSEUM IS AT WATERLOO AND UNDERGOING ENHANCEMENTS THAT WILL BE
COMPLETED AT A $1.5  MILLION COST AND OPEN LATER THIS  YEAR.

LUNCH WAS NEXT
CATERED BY FLATTED FIFTH BLUES AND BBQ AT POTTERS MILL
IN BELLEVUE.     MARK AND STAFF DID A GREAT JOB SERVING
THE DELICIOUS FOOD WITH BREAD PUDDING.

WINE TASTING TOO....
JIM AND MARY KAY SORENSEN, OWNERS, SAID THEY GET THEIR GRAPES FROM
ALL OVER IOWA, INCLUDING NEARBY CHARLOTTE AND THIS  YEAR STARTED
RAISING THEIR  OWN.   BECAUSE OF THE CAVES BEING CLOSED, THEY ARE MISSING
THAT TRAFFIC THAT NORMALLY GOES RIGHT BY THEIR PLACE, SO THEIR BUSINESS
IS DOWN A LITTLE.     GOOD REASON TO STOP OUT AND BUY A BOTTLE OR TWO.
THE LITTLE I TASTED WAS VERY GOOD.

OAKLAND MILL IS VERY NICE.   THIS IS A PHOTO OF THE BACK YARD  NEW PATIO.
IT WAS A FINE PLACE WHEN KNOWN AS COSTELLO'S, BUT MANY IMPROVEMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE AND IT IS EVEN MUCH NICER NOW.    THE PUBLIC WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO SEE IT THIS FRIDAY NIGHT WHEN THERE WILL BE AN OPEN HOUSE FROM 4 UNTIL 7 P.M.   I'LL TAKE MORE PHOTOS THEN, INCLUDING OF THE OWNERS,
SO WATCH FOR THEM HERE ON THE DAILY.

FRIDAY DAILY

LAST NIGHT I DROVE DOWN THE MAIN ENTRY ROAD TO THE MAQUOKETA CAVES
STATE PARK, UNTIL I GOT STOPPED ABOVE.   WANTED SOME PHOTOS OF WORK BEING DONE, SO WALKED DOWN FROM HERE AND TOOK A COUPLE  PHOTOS.
I UNDERSTAND THEY ARE GETTING CLOSE TO POURING CONCRETE.
TREES HAVE BEEN TAKEN DOWN ON LEFT GOING UP THE HILL.   PAVED PARKING SPACES WILL BE ON THE RIGHT.    THE ROAD WILL BE WIDER AND THERE WILL BE A SIDEWALK ON BOTH SIDES FOR SAFETY.
THIS PROJECT WAS NEEDED.   WILL BE NICE WHEN DONE IN AUGUST.    SOME WORK
IS ALSO PLANNED FOR THE  CAMPING AREA.

THE MAQUOKETA GIRLS SOFTBALL TEAM WON THEIR FIRST TWO GAMES LAST NIGHT,  DEFEATING VINTON SHELLSBURG 4 TO 1 AND 4 TO 3.      THEIR RECORD
NOW IS 2 AND 0 9 OVERALL AND 2 AND 8 IN THE WAMAC.

ENJOY SOME ICE CREAM THIS WEEKEND
