ANOTHER SUPER WEATHER DAY IN MAQUOKETA....IN UPPER 70'S.
MORE OF THE SAME THE REST OF THE WEEK.
KEN MOORE OF MAQUOKETA APPEARED BEFORE THE MAQUOKETA
CITY COUNCIL MONDAY NIGHT AND TOLD MEMBERS HE IS INTERESTED IN
BUILDING SIX TO EIGHT TOWNHOUSES ON THE FORMER OUTDOOR POOL
SITE. HE ASKED THE COUNCIL TO PAY FOR A SURVEY OF THE LAND TO
DETERMINE THE LOT LINES. HE SAID NO MATTER WHAT THE CITY
DOES WITH THE LAND, THEY WILL NEED TO HAVE A SURVEY DONE.
THE COUNCIL AGREED TO GET A SURVEY DONE AT AN ESTIMATED COST
OF UP TO $1,000. MOORE SAID HE IS WORKING ON A PRELIMINARY
DRAWING TO BUILD THE TOWNHOUSES AND SAID HIS PLAN IS TO HAVE THE ENTRY DRIVEWAY FROM MAIN STREET. MAYOR DON SCHWENKER SAID IF THE CITY DID SELL THE SITE, THE PROCEEDS COULD BE USED TO FIX UP
THE COMMUNITY CENTER. AND, HE SAID THE CITY HAS INCURRED A LOT
OF EXPENSES TO MAKE THE FORMER POOL PROPERTY USABLE AGAIN.
BECAUSE THE LAND IS CITY PROPERTY, IT WOULD HAVE TO BE ADVERTISED
AND PUT UP FOR PUBLIC BID.
BEN LANGE OF INDEPENDENCE DEFEATED ROD BLUM OF DUBUQUE IN THE ELECTION YESTERDAY. BOTH ARE REPUBLICANS. IT WAS A CLOSE RACE.
SO, LANGE WILL OPPOSE CONGRESSMAN BRUCE BRALEY, DEMOCRAT,
IN THE NOVEMBER GENERAL ELECTION. BRALEY IS MAQUOKETA'S U.S.
CONGRESSMAN.
THE FIRST DRIVE-IN THEATRE OPENED ON THIS DATE, IN NEW JERSEY,
IN 1933. THE 61 DRIVE-IN THEATRE SOUTH OF MAQUOKETA OPENED IN
AUGUST OF 1950.
