NICE DAY...HIGH OF 72. TOMORROW, SUNNY AND 72 AGAIN.
RAIN ON T
MAQUOKETA NATIVE AND MCHS GRAD MICK MICHEL HAS BEEN
CITY MANAGER OF DYERSVILLE FOR SOME YEARS (BEFORE THAT A
CITY MANAGER IN ILLINOIS) AND LAST WEEK, THERE WAS AN ATTEMPT
BY THE MAYOR AND A COUNCIL PERSON OR TWO TO FIRE HIM AS THEY
THOUGHT HE OVERSTEPPED AND THEY THEREFORE LOST TRUST IN HIM.
LONG TWO HOUR MEETING OF THE COUNCIL LAST NIGHT THAT BROUGHT
HUNDREDS OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO SUPPORT HIM. AND, SO, HE WILL KEEP HIS JOB. WANT TO READ MORE, GOOGLE THE DUBUQUE TELEGRAPH
HERALD FOR A LONG STORY. HIS MOTHER IS MARY ANN MICHEL WHO
RUNS HER POPULAR CATERING BUSINESS IN AN OUT OF A BUILDING BEHIND HER HOME.
WHEN I GOT DRAFTED INTO THE ARMY IN 1963, JOE LOBAITO WAS HIRED TO REPLACE ME AS MANAGER OF KMAQ AND HE DID SO DURING THE 2 YEARS
I SERVED IN BASICALLY FORT HOOD, TEXAS.
HE DIED LATE THIS PAST SEPTEMBER AT HIS HOME IN GENESEO, ILLINOIS (JUST EAST OF THE QUAD CITIES) WHERE HAS HAS LIVED SINCE 1970, WHEN HE BECAME OWNER OF THE RADIO STATION THERE, WGEN. HE SOLD IT
TWENTY YEARS LATER. JOE, AGE 93, IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE MARY AND 4 CHILDREN AND 12 GRANDCHILDREN. WHILE IN MAQUOKETA, HE BOUGHT
A HOME, WAS IN ROTARY AND ACTIVE IN SACRED HEART CHURCH. I
VISITED WITH HIM A COUPLE TIMES IN ST. LOUIS WHEN THE CARDINALS
HOSTED STATIONS ON THE CARDINAL RADIO NETWORK.
YES, McDONALS IN MAQUOKETA AND DEWITT .... LIKE ALL OVER THE
COUNTRY, IS NOW SERVING BREAKFAST ALL DAY LONG.
THIS EXCELLENT PHOTO WAS TAKEN BY DAVE VOY AT PIONEER DAY LAST
SUNDAY AT THE FAIRGROUDS, SPONSORED BY THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY.
YOUR LOOKING AT AN "OLDTIMER" AND A "NEWCOMER" IN NEWSPAPERING
IN JACKSON COUNTY. LOWELL CARLSON, RURAL ANDREW AT LEFT, HAS
BEEN A REPORTER FOR ABOUT 50 YEARS AND RETIRED A COUPLE YEARS
AGO AS EDITOR OF THE BELLEVUE HERALD-LEADER. AT RIGHT, TREVIS
MAYFIELD, NEW OWNER OF THE HERALD-LEADER AND THE MAQUOKETA
AND DEWITT NEWSPAPERS. LOWELL SUNDAY GAVE A TALK ON THE
HISTORY OF BELLEVUE. LOWELL JUST TOLD TREVIS HE WOULD BE GLAD
TO COVER SOME STORIES NOW AND THEN FOR THE HERALD, AND FOR
MINIMUM WAGE TOO.
NANCY AND I SAW "THE MARTIAN" SUNDAY NIGHT AND WE BOTH REALLY
ENJOYED IT. WE THINK YOU WILL TOO. LINDA GAVE IT 4 OF 5 STARS
IN THE QC TIMES.
THIS AFTERNOON I WENT FOR MY FLU SHOT AT MAQUOKETA FAMILY CLINIC ON NORTH ARCADE.... AND ALSO TO HAVE A KIND OF PIMPLE ON MY BACK LOOKED AT THAT I DISCOVERED A FEW WEEKS AGO. I GOT THERE AT ABOUT 4....NO APPOINTMENT....WAITED A FEW MINUTES IN THE WAITING ROOM....GOT THE SHOT....WAITED A FEW MINUTRES FOR DR. BYBEE AND WAS OUT BY JUST AFTER 4:30 AFTER BYBEE TOOK CARE OF THE PROBLEM ON MY BACK. NO SKIN CANCER! ALWAYS THE WORRY! YOU DON'T GET THIS KIND OF ATTENTION IN BIG CITIES. AND THIS WASN'T THE FIRST TIME I GOT THIS TYPE OF MEDICAL ATTENTION. AND I'M SURE THE SAME WOULD HAPPEN AT MEDICAL ASSOCIATES ON WEST PLATT.
WHEN I MAKE APPOINTMENTS THAT ARE NECESSARY OUT OF TOWN,
I NORMALLY GET DATES 30 TO 60 DAYS OUT.
ANOTHER LONG, FUN DAY IN GOOD OLD MA-CO-KEE-TAH AS MANY
NOT FAMILIAR SAY.
GOOD NIGHT.
DENNIS VOY
