NEW AT THE COURTHOUSE IS A METAL DETECTOR AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE
HALL LEADING TO THE COURTROOM. ALL THE JURORS, ATTORNEYS AND VISITORS
ARE REQUIRED TO GO THROUGH THE DETECTOR.
JACKSON COUNTY SHERIFF DEPUTIES BELIEVE THEY HAVE SOLVED 80 PERCENT OF THE BURGLARIES CONCERNING COPPER AND SCRAP METAL, WITH THE ARREST OF FOUR
PEOPLE OVER THE WEEKEND, ON VARIOUS FELONY CHARGES. ARRESTED:
JASON TURNER, AGE 39, OF RURAL MAQUOKETA.....CHRISTINE CASEL, AGE 42, OF
RURAL MAQUOKETA.....AND CHARLES CASEL, JR, OF RURAL MAQUOKETA. HE HAS BEEN RELEASED FROM JAIL. ALSO ARRESTED WAS JENS BARTEN, AGE 19, OF DELMAR.
ONE OF THE PLACES BURGLARIZED WAS THE ROGER AND AUDREY WILMS RESIDENCE
ON 13TH STREET. NUMEROUS TOOLS, MONEY AND COPPER WERE TAKEN. MANY OF T HE BURGLARIES AND COPPER THEFTS IN THE SOUTHERN PART OF JACKSON COUNTY HAVE BEEN CLEARED. MOST OF THE COPPER AND SCRAP METAL HAD ALREADY BEEN CASHED
IN.
CITY COUNCIL MEETING TONIGHT. A NEW PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR MAY BE HIRED.
THEY WILL ALSO BE TALKING ABOUT TRAILS, WIND TURBINES, AND RE-DISTRICTING
THE CITY'S FIVE WARDS.
SCHOOL STARTS THURSDAY IN MAQUOKETA. AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL, KIDS WILL
NOTICE NEW HAND RAILS FOR THE STAIRS AND LOT OF NEW PAINT. AT CARDINAL
ELEMENTARY, NEW CARPET AND A NEW LIGHTING SYSTEM. AT BRIGGS ELEMENTARY,
NEW CARPET, PAINT AND NEW LIGHTS AND EACH HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WILL
RECEIVE A NEW LAPTOP COMPUTER. BUT,THEY DON'T GET IT UNTIL NOVEMBER.
A MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT LATE SUNDAY NIGHT AFTER IT HIT A DEER ON HIGHWAY 61. DWAYNE EDWARDS OF MAQUOKETA WAS DRIVING SOUTH ON HIGHWAY 61, FOUR MILES NORTH OF MAQUOKETA WHEN A DEER RAN ONTO THE ROAD AND INTO THE DITCH. $7,000 DAMAGE TO THE 2OO8 TRIUMPH CYCLE. EDWARDS DID NOT SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION.
A MINOR ACCIDENT REPORTED IN CASEY'S PARKING LOT AT 700 EAST PLATT STREET. ARLENE JORGENSEN, AGE 89, WAS BACKING UP IN THE CASEY'S LOT AND 6:30 LAST NIGHT AND HIT A VEHICLE REGISTERED TO IAN EARLES OF MAQUOKETA. DAMAGES LISTED AT $200 TO EARLES 2010 CHEVY AND $100 TO JORGENSON'S 2002 OLDS.
POLICE BLOTTER: TOM STEVENSON OF BUTTERNUT STREET REPORTED SATURDAY
THAT HE FOUND A KNIFE IN ONE OF THE TIRES ON HIS VEHICLE.
AND ERIN MILLERL OF EAST GROVE STREET REPORTED YESTERDAY MORNING THAT THE WINDOW WAS BROKEN OUT OF A BACK SHED AND THE PAINT WAS SCRATCHED ON A HARLEY DAVISON MOTORCYCLE.
THE MAQUOKETA FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED TO RIVER VILLAGE APPARTMENTS LATE LAST NIGHT BUT NO FIRE WAS FOUND. FIREFIGHERS WENT TO 401 N. ARCADE #205 AT 9:18 LAST NIGHT TO A REPORT OF A SMELL OF SMOKE.
THE MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL WILL START UP A BOWLING TEAM. THE SCHOOL BOARD APPROVED THE ADDITION OF BOWLING LAST WEEK. A COACH HAS YET TO BE HIRED.
THE HIGH SCHOOL SEASON WILL RUN NOVEMBER THROUGH FEBRUARY WITH A TOURNAMENT BEGINNING FEB. 18TH AND LEADING TO THE STATE TOURNAMENT FEB. 24TH.
THE SEASON IS SCHEDULED FOR 12 MEETS. OTHER WAMAC SCHOOLS WITH BOWLING PROGRAMS ARE DEWITT, WEST DELAWARE, WESTERN DUBUQUE AND MARION.
