THE HIGHEST BID ON THE PAINTINGS WAS FOR THE OLD MILL (COSTELLO'S) JUST EAST OF MAQUOKETA. IT BROUGHT $550. IT WAS PURCHASED
BY WILLIAM DE MAURO OF PLAINVIEW, NEW YORK AND SOON TO BE A RESIDENT OF MAQUOKETA. HE ALSO BOUGHT THE DECKER HOTEL PAINTING. I FORGOT TO ASK WHY HE WANTED THIS PAINTING BUT I
DID FIND OUT WHY HE WANTED THE DECKER HOTEL ONE AND SO I'LL WRITE MORE ABOUT HIM AND HIS WIFE UNDER THAT PAINTING.
THE SECOND HIGHEST PAINTING ($500) WAS FOR THE FORMER SHERIFF'S
RESIDENCE ON WEST PLATT STREET. THE HOUSE WAS TORN DOWN
AND THAT CORNER LOT WAS USED FOR THE JACKSON COUNTY LAW CENTER. THIS PAINTING WAS PURCHASED BY DIANE DERGANZ OF MAQUOKETA. HER FATHER WAS THE LATE CLARENCE HINKE AND SHE
AND THE FAMILY LIVED IN THE BRICK HOME FOR 8 YEARS. SHE WAS THE 2ND OLDEST OF 5 KIDS AND HAS FOND MEMORIES OF THE HOME.
THE 3RD HIGHEST BID OF $415 WAS FOR THE SCENE OF DOWNTOWN
MAQUOKETA BUSINESS PLACES, LOOKING SOUTH FROM THE MAIN AND PLATT STREET INTERSECTION ON THE WEST SIDE OF MAIN STREET.
LONGTIME RESIDENT DAVID ROSHEIM HAS MANY MEMORIES OF DOWNTOWN
MAQUOKETA AS HE ONCE HAD A BOOK STORE NOT TOO FAR FROM THESE
STORES. HE ALSO LIKED THE CARS (OF THE 1980'S) IN THE PAINTING.
THE 4TH HIGHEST BID WENT FOR THE DECKER HOTEL PAINTING AT $375.
IT WAS PURCHASED BY WILLIAM DE MAURO, WHO ALSO PURCHASED THE
OLD MILL PAINTING ABOVE. HE AND SARAH JONES, A MAQUOKETA NATIVE,
WERE JUST MARRIED IN OCTOBER. THEY MET ON THE INTERNET.
HER LATE GRANDFATHER WAS JOHN HARRISON WHO HAD A FUNERAL HOME AND FURNITURE STORE IN MAQUOKETA. HER MOTHER WAS HELEN
HARRISON JONES, WHO DIED A COUPLE YEARS AGO. HER DAD DIED
MANY YEARS AGO. WHEN GROWING UP IN MAQUOKETA, SHE LIVED
AT 209 WEST PLEASANT STREET WITH HER MOTHER. AND THAT HOME
WAS BUILDT BY HER GREAT-GRANDFATHER WHO FOUGHT IN THE CIVIL
WAR AND AFTER THE WAR, CAME TO MAQUOKETA TO PRACTICE LAW AND
BUILDT THAT HOME AT 209 WEST PLEASANT. THE HOME HAS STAYED IN
THE FAMILY WITH NO OTHER OWNERSHIP. IT HAS BEEN VACANT THE LAST
COUPLE YEARS AND WILLIAM AND SARAH WILL BE LIVING IN IT SOON AND THE TWO PAINTINGS WILL HANG IN THEIR LIVING ROOM. ONE OTHER INTERESTING THING, AND WHY THEY BOUGHT THE DECKER PAINTING.....
A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, THEY STAYED OVERNIGHT AT THE DECKER AND
WHEN THEY WERE GIVEN THE KEY, IT WAS FOR ROOM 209. THEY HAD
NOT ASKED FOR THAT ROOM.
THE 5TH HIGHEST BID, $350, WAS FOR THE LAKEHURST DAM PAINTING. IT WAS BID BY DAN WAITE. I DID NOT TALK TO HIM, SO I DON'T KNOW WHY HE
WAS INTERESTED IN IT. HE LIVES ON THE ROAD TO THE DAM.
THE 6TH HIGHEST BID WAS FOR THE MITCHELL-MASKREY MILL PAINTING IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA. IT WENT FOR $325 AND WAS PURCHASED BY FRANK MITCHELL, WHO OWNS THE MILL AND STILL USES PART OF IT.
HIS GRANDFATHER, PIERCE, STARTED THE BUSINESS THERE AND HIS FATHER, ROBERT, RAN IT ALL HIS LIFE AND FRANK HAS BEEN OWNER-MANAGER FOR MANY YEARS.
THE 7TH HIGHEST BID AT $275 WENT FOR THE MAQUOKETA LIVESTOCK
SALES PAINTING AND WAS PURCHASED BY KIM DEPPE. KIM, NURSE PRACTIONER WITH FAMILY CLINIC, AND WIFE OF LARRY DEPPE, WANTED IT BECAUSE THE LIVESTOCK BUSINESS HAS BEEN THEIR LIFE. THEY OWN
A CATTLE OPERATION AT RURAL LAMOTTE. ONE SON, MATT, IS CEO FOR THE IOWA CATTLEMEN'S ASSOCIATION AND LIVES NEAR DES MOINES, AT WINTERSET. AND OTHER OTHER SON, LUCAS, IS WEST COAST MANAGER
FOR NATIONAL BEEF AND LIVES IN KANSAS CITY, A BIG CATTLE DOWN. BOTH ARE MARRIED. MATT HAS 3 CHILDREN.
AND FINIALLY, THE 8TH PAINTING OF THE STONE HOME AT SOUTH EDGE OF MAQUOKETA, WAS PURCHASED BY CAROL ROUND FOR OF RURAL MAQUOKETA, FOR $190.
SHE AND HUSBAND JIM HUNG IT IN THEIR LIVING ROOM THIS MORNING.
JIM'S GREAT-GREAT GRANDFATHER BUILDT THE HOME IN 1844. HIS
GREAT AUNT GRACE HOLIHAN, LIVED IN IT FOR MANY YEARS. IT IS NOW OWNED BY MARY ANN MICHEL AND HER EVENTS CENTER, MICHEL'S HALL IS LOCATED BEHIND THE HOME.
THE TOTAL AMOUNT BID FOR THE 8 PAINTINGS WAS $2,980.00.
ALL 8 PAINTINGS WERE DONATED BY McDONALDS OWNER GLEN KARPINSKI OF GALENA AND HE IS MATCHING THE AMOUNT. SO, THE RONALD McDONALD HOUSE NEAR UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS IN IOWA CITY WILL BE
GETTING A TOTAL OF $5,960.00.
A BIG THANK-YOU TO GLEN AND THE 7 PAINTING BUYERS.
AS ALWAYS, CLICK-0N THE PAINTINGS (DONE BY ARTIST BECKY TYRDIK
OF ILLINOIS, WHO WAS HIRED BY GLEN TO PAINT THEM FOR HIS THEN NEW RESTAURANT IN MAQUOKETA ) TO MAKE THEM LARGER.
THE RESTAURANT IS BEING RE-DONE COMPLETELY, INSIDE AND OUT,
AND CALLED FOR A NEW DECOR INSIDE, AND THAT'S WHY THE PAINTINGS
BY BECKY TYRDIK WENT ON SILENT AUCITON.
KMAQ HAD FUN HOSTING THE PAINTINGS IN OUR FRONT LOBBY DURING
OCTOBER AND CONDUCTING THE SILENT AUCTION.
