THE JACKSON COUNTY FAIR HAS BEEN GOING GOOD. ATTENDANCE IS UP AND MAY BE BEST IN SEVEAL YEARS. WEDNESDAY NIGHT PARADE WAS GOOD...AND LONG.
THURSDAY NIGHT, RAIN CAME, AND CANCELLED THE BUDDY JEWEL COUNTRY SHOW. THEY HAD ABOUT A THOUSAND IN GRANDSTAND AT 8 WHEN THEY HAD TO CANCEL, BUT BUDDY WENT OUT INTO GRANDSTAND WITH A COUPLE BAND MEMBERS AND WITHOUT PA, SANG IN THE CENTER OF GRANDSTAND AND THEN AT BOTH ENDS...SO HE WAS NICE ENOUGHT TO DO THAT....AND THEN SIGNED AUTOGRAPHS FOR A COUPLE HOURS AFTER.
FRIDAY NIGHT TRACTOR AND TRUCK PULL WAS BIG AND LAST NIGHT, A FULL GRANDSTAND, PLUS, FOR THE STOCK CAR RACES.
ASHLEY SCHNOOR, 2004 MCHS GRAD, AND DAUGHTER OF RODNEY AND SHERRY SCHNOOR OF MAQUOEKTA, SHOWED THE GRAND CHAMP STEER YESTERAY.

THEY HAVE A NEW BOOK ON THE HISTORY OF THE FAIR (CELEBRATING 150 THIS YEAR) AND YOU CAN BUY ONE FOR $7. EMAIL ME AND I'LL TAKE YOUR ORDER.
GENE AUTRY WAS THE MAIN ENTERTAINER IN 1977, OR MAYBE 78. SHOJI TABUCHI, NUMBER ONE SINGER IN BRANSON NOW, WAS THE ENTERTAINER HERE IN 1974. I AND KMAQ, HAVE BEEN COVERING THE FAIR SINCE THE 1959 FAIR. WE WERE IN A TENT THAT FIRST YEAR AND WERE CELEBRATING OUR 1ST ANNIVERSARY WITH A DRAWING FOR FREE RADIOS. JAN GARBER'S ORCHESTRA WAS A FEATURED ACT THEN. ADMISSION WAS $1. NOW IT IS $6 BUT YOU CAN BUY A FUN-SAVER CARD IN ADVANCE OF THE SALE FOR A GOOD SAVINGS ON DAILY ADMISSION. THE FAIR HERE IS A GOOD ONE....MUCH BIGGER AND MORE TO DO THAN THAT FIRST ONE I WENT TO IN 1959. MORE PERMANENT BUILDINGS NOW. IF YOU HAVE STORIES TO SHARE ABOUT THE FAIR, DO SO ON THE KMAQ GUEST BOOK.

SO MUCH FOR THE FAIR, FOR NOW.

ONE DEATH. GALEN BURKEY, AGE 83, OF MAQUOKETA, DIED THURSDAY. HE WORKED FOR THE MAQUOKETA MUNICIPAL UTILITY PLANT OFR 23 YEARS. HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE, ARLENE AND SEVERAL CHILDREN. RON,MIKE AND GARY LIVE HERE IN TOWN.

I'M NOT SURE I MENTIONED IN EARLIER REPORT THAT FRIDAY AFTERNOON AT 12:30, LARRY MCCLOY OF MAQUOKETA ACCIDENTALLY RAN HIS CAR INTO THE WALL AT THE MAQUOKETA STATE BANK WEST SIDE OFFICE PARKING AREA. FOOT MUST HAVE SLIPPED TO ACCELERATOR INSTEAD OF BRAKE. HE WORKS FOR ME AT THE THEATRE, BUT I HAVE NOT YET TALKED TO HIM. HIS WIFE, LIZ AND GRANDSON WERE WITH HIM AND NO INJURIES. THE CAR WENT
RIGHT INTO THE BUILDING AND STOPPED WHEN IT HIT THE VALUT WALL.

FULL HOUSE LAST NIGHT AT THE DRIVE-IN. IN FACT, HAD TO TURN AWAY A LOT OF CARS.
IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL NIGHT AND PEOPLE ARE DOING LOTS OF THINGS THESE DAYS, AS THE SUMMER VACATION IS FAST COMING TO A CLOSE. I STARTED AT 5:30 YESTERDAY MORNING HERE AT THE STATION AND LEFT THE DRIVE-IN JUST BEFORE MIDNIGHT LAST. LONG DAY. AT 65, I HAVE NO TROUBLE DOING THIS, BUT I'M NOT SURE I'LL BE ABLE TO STAND THIS WHEN I'M 80.

SPEAKING OF AGE....GRAND-DAUGHTER CASSIE OF BETTENDORF IS 7 TODAY. HAPPY BIRTHDAY CASSIE. WILL BE DOWN AT 2 THIS AFTERNOON FOR YOUR PARTY. SHE IS RICK AND SHERI'S DAUGHTER.

WELL..SORRY FOR THE LENGTHY REPORT.

HAVE A GOOD WEEK.

SUNDAY... CONTINUES WITH PART 2.

NEXT, A REPORT ON RAGBRAI. IT WAS A WILD AND FUN FRIDAY AND FRIDAY NIGHT IN MAQUOKETA.
THE 10-15-THOUSAND BIKERS STARTED ARRIVING AROUND 10 A.M. BUT MOST CAME IN DURING THE MID-AFTERNOON HOURS. THEY ENTERED MAQUOKETA FROM THE WEST ON HIGHWAY 64 AND TURNED ON TO SUMMITT STREET ACROSS FROM OBIE'S RESTAURANT (MANY YEARS AGO,THE TANGO) AND HEADED UP THE THE HIGH SCHOOL, MORE OR LESS THE STARTING POINT IN MAQUOKETA. ALL ALONG THE STREETS WERE SIGNS DIRECTING THEM TO THEIR GROUP SITE, AS MOST BIKERS ARE WITH GROUPS, WITH A GIVEN NAME.
MOST IMMEDIATELY SET UP THERE TENT. MOST TENTS WERE IN SEVERAL DISIGNATED AREAS, BUT MANY HAS MADE ARRANGEMENTS TO SET UP IN PRIVATE YARDS. NANCY AND I HAD 14 IN OUR BACK YARR (A VERY NICE GROUP BY THE WAY) AND ALL THEY WANTED WAS TO USE OUR BASEMENT SHOWER AND BATHROOM. SOME GROUPS, LIKE ACCROSS THE STREET FROM US, HAS MADE ARRANGEMENTS FOR PORTA-POTTIES. THERE WERE HUNREDS OF THOSE IN TOWN AND SOME ARE STILL STANDING AROUND WAITING TO BE PICKED-UP. THE DOWNTOWN AREA STARTED GETTING BUSY AROUND 4 P.M. AND WAS
PACKED STARTING AROUND 7. MOST OF THE FOOD STANDS WERE ON THE CLOSED STREET IN FRONT OF THE LIBRARY....MUST HAVE BEEN 20 STANDS. THEN, IN THE CITY PARKING LOT EAST OF THE COURT HOUSE, WAS THE BEER GARDEN, WITH TWO ROCK BANDS. IT GOT REALLY BUSY AROUND 8:30 P.M. AND HAD TO SHUT DOWN AT 10:45. I HEARD THAT IT TOOK IN AROUND $23,000. IT WAS A MILLER-LITE GARDEN. AT $3 A CAN, THE GROSS GROWS QUICKLY. THEY ATE WELL. THE BOOSTER STAND AT THE HIGH SCHOOL SOLD OUT. TWO RESTAURANTS DOWNTOWN SOLD OUT OF FOOD CLOSED EARLY. THREE OR MORE CHURCHS SOLD OUT EARLY. LITTLE TROUBLE. A COUPLE OF ALCOHOL RELATED ARRESTS AND ONE OWI.
THERE WAS A TWO-CAR ACCIDENT BY SUPPORT PEOPLE IN TOWN AND IT HAPPENED OUT ON MCKINSEY DRIVE AND THERE WERE 3 IN EACH CAR AND SOME WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL, BUT I HAVE NOT HEARD IF THEY HAD SERIOUS INJURIES. AT THE MILLER LITE GARDEN, THEY HAD A DRAWING FOR A USED, BUT REALLY NICE BUS, AND IT WAS WON BY A BIKING GROUP IN DUBUQUE. SEVERAL BUSES WERE BUSY ALL NIGHT HAULING PEOPLE (FOR $2) TO SEVERAL DROP -OFF PLACES, INCLUDING A STOP AT THE MAQUOKETA CAVES STATE PARK.

SO, ALTHOUGH I'LL BE HEARING MORE ABOUT RAGBRAI THIS WEEK, MY SENSE IS....IT WAS A BIG SUCCESS HERE IN MAQUOKETA. WE HEARD OF NUMEROUS COMMENTS BY BIKERS SAYING MAQUOKETA WAS THE BEST STOP OF THE WEEK, FOR FACILITIES AND ORGANIZATION. HOPLEFULLY,THEY'LL ALL COME BACK AND VISIT JACKSON COUNTY AGAIN. THEY WERE FROM ALL 50 STATES AND SEVERAL FOREIGN COUNTRIES.

KMAQ ... LEIGHTON HEPKER AND I...DID MANY REMOTE BROADCASTS FROM AROUND TOWN BRINGING LISTENERS THE COLOR OF RAGB RAI. AND SON DAVID VOY, TOOK HUNDREDS OF PICTURES FRIDAY AND FRIDAY NIGHT AND YOU CAN SEE THEM AT www.maquoketa.com

AND..ALL THIS GOING ON FRIDAY WHILE THE JACKSON COUNTY FAIR WAS ALSO IN PROGRESS HERE IN TOWN....AND KMAQ WAS BROADCASTING (YES LEIGHTON AND I) EVERY HALF HOUR FROM IT
MORE ABOUT THE FAIR NEXT, BUT I'LL POST THIS PART NOW AND THE NEXT WILL BE PART 3.
A HOT AND HUMID SUNDAY IN MAQUOKETA...IN THE 80'S FOR SURE!

I HAVE BEEN BUSY!

JUST GOT HERE TO OFFICE, AFTER ATTENDING CHURCH WITH NANCY. WHAT'S NEW AT FIRST LUTHERAN? PASTOR PAM SCHROEDER WILL BE LEAVING WITHIN A YEAR. HER HUSBAND, BRAD, ALSO A LUTHERAN MINISTER, HAS ACCEPTED A CALL TO DES MOINES AND THE FAMILY WILL MOVE THERE. PASTOR PAM, WHO HAS BEEN THE ASSOCIATE PASTOR HERE FOR SEVERAL YEARS, WILL BE LOOKING FOR A CALL TO A CHURCH IN THE DES MOINES AREA. WILL HATE TO SEE HER LEAVE. NANCY AND I SAT BEHIND BUDDY AND MYRNA OLSON. BUDDY WAS FORMER CHIEF OF POLICE HER.....WHILE I WAS MAYOR IN THE EARLY 70'S, HE WAS THE BEST CHEIF I EVER HAD. HE AND HIS SON JAY OWN AND OPERATE A SECURITY FIRM FROM THEIR HOME NORTH OF TOWN, THAT HAS CLIENTS ALL OVER, WIRED BY PHONE LINES TO MONIOR BUSINESS FIRMS AND HOMES. BUDDY, LIKE ME, DOESN'T SING LOUD. AND HE DID NOT WEAR A TIE. NOT UNUSUAL THESE DAYS. I, PASTOR GJERDE AND RON RATH WERE THE ONLY THREE IN CHURCH WEARING A TIE. RON IS MORTICIAN WITH CARSON AND SON FUNERAL HOME IN MAQUOKETA. MORTICIANS
ALWAYS WEAR TIES OF COURSE. EVEN JAKE BICKFORD, OWNER OF BILL MOLER'S MEN'S WEAR IN MAQUOKETA WAS IN CHURCH TODAY, WITHOUT A TIE. HE AND JUDY HAD 3 GRANDKIDS WITH THEM FROM INDIANA. BRIAN'S KIDS, WHILE THEY ARE ON VACATION. A WEEK AGO YESTERDAY, I WAS
TO NICOLE CLAUSING'S WEDDING IN WAVERLY, AND IN THE PEWS, ONLY I AND A COUPLE OTHERS WORE A TIE TO THE WEDDING. I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THAT, BUT I DO HAVE SOME OF THE SPORTY OUTFITS WORN THESE DAYS TO CHURCH. IN OTHER WORDS, SOME GO TOO FAR AND ARE TOO CASUAL.
DURING THE KIDS SERMON TODAY, HE ATE ONE M & M AT A TIME, JOKING WITH THE KIDS ABOUT HOW HE LIKED ALL THE DIFFERENT COLORS OF M & M'S..... HE JUST KEPT EATING THEM...ALONE....UNTIL THEY WERE GONE. THEN WENT ON TO TALK ABOUT "SHARING". CLEVER KID'S SERMON. OH YEA...HE HAD LITTLE BAGS OF M & M'S FOR THEM AFTER, TO TAKE HOME. HE REGULAR SERMON WAS ABOUT
"MATERIALISM", AND HOW IT CAUSES MANY FAMILY PROBLEMS. SO MUCH ABOUT CHURCH.
APPRORIATE, RIGHT? SINCE THIS IS SUNDAY. ATTENDANCE WAS DOWN...ALWAYS IS DURING SUMMER.
PASTOR GJERDE'S WIFE WORKS FOR ST.PAUL LUTHERAN IN DAVENPORT AND FOR THAT REASON, THEY LIVE HALF-WAY BETWEEN, IN DEWITT.

PART 2 OF THIS SUNDAY REPORT CONTINUES ABOVE. SINCE I AM HAVING SOME COMPUTER PROBLESM I BEST POST THIS BEFORE I LOOSE IT,AND THEN CONTINUE.
