TUESDAY DAILY REPORT

WARM TODAY, 60.
COOL AND WET TOMORROW AND THURSDAY.
NOT TOO BAND FOR EASTER WEEKEND.

AT THE CITY COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT, THE COUNCIL VOTED TO
SPEND $12,500 ON TWENTY NEW STREET BANNERS TO BE PLACED ON THE 20 NEW LIGHT POLES COMING TO DOWNTOWN LATER THIS YEAR.    THE PRICE INCLUDES TWO SETS OF BANNERS, ONE FOR YEAR AROUND WELCOME MESSAGE AND THE OTHER FOR CHRISTMAS.    THEY WILL HAVE LIGHTS AROUND THEM TOO.

REMEMBER ANDY McKEAN?   HE WAS A STATE REPRESENTATIVE FOR
PART OF THE KMAQ AREA AND THEN A STATE SENATOR.   THAT WAS MANY YEARS AGO.     HE THEN LIVED IN MORLEY BUT LATER, HE MOVED TO ANAMOSA AND OPERATED A BED AND BREAKFAST.    ALSO DID ENTERTAINING...SINGING OLD FASHIONED COUNTRY MUSIC, GOSPEL MUSIC AND CALLING SQUARE DANCES.     HE WILL NOW RUN FOR THE IOWA HOUSE DISTRICT #58 AS A REPUBLICAN, SEEKING THE SEAT OF REP. BRIAN MOORE WHO IS NOT GOING TO RUN AGAIN AND ENDS HIS TERM DECEMBER 31ST.    ANDY IS 66 AND HIS WIFE IS CONNIE WHO CURRENTLY SERVES AS PRESIDENT OF THE ANAMOSA SCHOOL BOARD AND THEY HAVE FOUR ADULT CHILDREN AND RECENTLY BECAME GRANDPARENTS.       THE RETIRED ATTORNEY WAS A JONES COUNTY SUPERVISOR AND SAYS IF ELECTED HE WILL HIT THE GROUND RUNNING TO MAKE POSITIVE CHANGES FOR THE DISTRICT AND THE STATE.

SEVERAL YEARS AGO, I PURCHASED THE 3-STORY BUILDING TO THE NORTH OF THE THEATRE.    IT WAS OWNED BY ATTORNEY TOM PECKOSH WHO NOW LIVES IN SOUTH DAKOTA.   THE FRONT IS HOME OF "EXPRESSIONS" BEAUTY SALON AND THE BACK IS THE VOY 3 SMALL THEATRE.    THE TOP FLOOR
IS A LARGE LODGE ROOM AND LOOKS JUST LIKE IT DID IN THE 40'S AND
50'S.    ON THE SECOND FLOOR, THREE NEWLY REDONE APARTMENTS.
THIS PHOTO I TOOK THIS MORNING IN THE BASEMENT.     IN THE 40'S AND 50'S, MAQUOKETA HAD BASEMENTS THAT WERE OCCUPIED BY A BUSINESS.
THERE WERE STAIRWAYS FROM THE MAINSTREET SIDEWALK DOWN TO THE
BUSINESS.    MOST ARE GONE!   NOT MINE.    MY BASEMENT HAD A DOWNTOWN BUSINESSES (MAYBE TWO)  UNDER THE SIDEWALK WITH A FRONT DOOR TO THE BUSINESS.      AND THERE WERE TWO BIG DISPLAY WINDOWS AND SMALL WINDOWS AT THE FRONT AND ELSEWHERE.    IN PHOTO ABOVE, ABOUT HALF-WAY DOWN, NOTICE THE WINDOW TO THE RIGHT AND THE DOORWAY TO ANOTHER SECTION.    NOW, WITH STREET REBUILDING  DOWNTOWN, THE PLAN IS TO FILL IN THIS  UNDERGROUND AREA UNDER THE MAIN STREET NEW SIDEWALK.    AND THAT'S WHY I TOOK THE PHOTOS AND THE NEWSPAPER AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY WILL TOO.   ANYONE KNOW WHAT BUSINESS (OR TWO) WAS DOWN THERE?
MORE PICTURES....

ONE OF THE TWO LARGE WINDOWS FACING THE AREA WHERE THE
STAIRS CAME DOWN FROM THE MAINSTREET SIDEWALK.

THANKS FOR CHECKING IN.
