NOT MUCH SUNSHINE BUT 46 FOR A HIGH TODAY.
BIG TOURNAMENT BASKETBALL GAME IN DEWITT TONIGHT BETWEEN THE MAQUOKETA GIRLS AND DEWITT GIRLS. THEY EACH HAVE NEARLY IDENTICAL RECORDS AND EACH HAS DEFEATED EACH OTHER ONCE ALREADY THIS SEASON. WE WILL BROADCAST IT AT 7 TONIGHT. LEIGHTON HEPKER AT THE MIC.
I THINK I FORGOT AN OBITUARY LAST WEEK. CLEMENT F. MAREK, 87, OF OXFORD JUNCTION DIED FEBRUARY 15TH IN CEDAR RAPIDS. HIS MAQUOKETA CONNECTION IS THAT HE IS SURVIVED BY JOHN AND GERI LAWRENCE OF MAQUOKETA, WHOM HE WAS RAISED BY.
JASON A. FAULKNER OF MAQUOKETA, IS RUNNING FOR ST. REPRESENTATIVE. HE HAS NEVER GIVEN A PRESS RELEASE, BUT DID CIRCULATE SHEETS AROUND TOWN INVITING EVERYONE TO A MEETING, FEBRUARY 22ND AT THE MAQUOKETA COMMUNITY CENTER. I DID NOT ATTEND THE MEETING. AND WE HAVE NO INFORMATION ABOUT HIM. NOT SURE EITHER IF HE IS A DEMOCRAT, REPUBLICAN OR INDELENDENT. MORE WHEN I FIND OUT MORE. AT THIS TIME, WE HAVE TWO ANNOUNCED CANDIDATES, DEMOCRATS JASON HAYNES AND TOM SCHUELLER AND NO REPUBLICAN. ST. REP. BOB OSTERHAUS, DEMOCRAT, IS NOT GOING TO SEEK RE-ELECTION THIS NOVEMBER.
ST. MARK'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH HAS ANNOUNCED THAT THEY WILL AGAIN HAVE A SHROVE TUESDAY SUPPER, ON FEBRUARY 24TH AT THE CHURCH, CORNER OF MAPLE AND NIAGARA IN MAQUOKETA. MARY BURLINGAME WAS ON "KMAQ'S JUST TALK" SHOW TODAY TO PROMOTE IT. SHE AND HER HUSBAND, PASTOR AL, CAME TO MAQUOKETA BACK IN 1969 AND HE DIED OVER 20 YEARS AGO. SHE IS STILL ACTIVE IN THE CHURCH.
JIM RANKIN OF MAQUOKETA WILL CELEBRATE HIS 80TH BIRTHDAY FEB. 23. HE WAS BORN IN MAQUOKETA AND HIS DAD WAS A LONGTIME PLUMBER AND FIREMEN. JIM IS RETIRED FROM AN INSURANCE COMPANY IN DES MOINES. HE IS A PAST MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCILMAN. HE AND WIFE MARILYN HAVE A SON DAVID AND HAVE TWO GRANDCHILDREN AND TWO GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN. MARILYN WORKED FOR KMAQ A FEW YEARS IN THE 1970'S.
THE MAQUOKETA MUNICIPAL ELECTRIC UTILITY HAS PURCHASED FOUR AUTOMATIC EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATORS, AT A COST OF $1,495 EACH. THEY CAN BE OPERATED BY PEOPLE WITHOUT MEDICAL TRAINING ON VICTIMS OF SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST. TWO WILL BE CARRIED ON BOOM TRUCKS, ONE WILL BE KEPT IN THE COUNCIL CHAMBERS AND THE 4TH WILL BE KEPT AT THE MAIN GENERATING PLANT. I'VE READ THAT MANY PEOPLE ARE BUYING ONE OF THESE FOR THEIR HOME. BY THE WAY, KENT SHOUSE, IS THE NEW BOARD CHAIRMAN OF THE MMEU BOARD.
A VERY BUSY PLACE WEEKENDS IN MAQUOKETA IS THE "FACTORY OUTLET WAREHOUSE" STORE OUT IN THE INDUSTRIAL PARK, SELLING FACTORY 2NDS AND DISCONTINUED ITEMS FROM THE PACIFIC COAST FEATHER COMPANY IN MAQUOKETA.
PEOPLE COME FROM ALL OVER ON SATURDAYS AND SUNDAYS. THEY ADVERTISE YOU CAN SAVE 50-80% OFF RETAIL ON COMFORTERS , PILLOWS, AND OTHER PRODUCTS MANUFACTURED OUT THERE.
SPRING IS JUST A LITTLE OVER A MONTH AWAY. ON THAT NICE THOUGHT, I'LL END THIS.
