CLOUDY AND 25 TODAY. A LITTLE SNOW WAS FORECAST FOR THIS MORNING
AND THIS AFTERNOON. WE HAVE HAD NONE. ONE OR TWO INCHES OVERNIGHT
TONIGHT....3 OR 4 TOMORROW....3 OR 4 TOMORROW NIGHT....SO BY WEDNESDAY MORNING, WE COULD HAVE AROUND 10 INCHES OF SNOW ON THE GROUND.
IT IS COMING IN TWO WAVES. NORTHERN IOWA WILL GET UP TO 15 INCHES
IN ONE WAVE AND SOUTHERN IOWA, UP TO 15 INCHES IN THAT WAVE. WE, HERE
IN THE MIDDLE, WILL GET LESS APPARENTLY. HOPE SO. IN ANY CASE, IT IS
ALL PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT TODAY. AND TV WEATHERMEN ADD TO THE
CHATTER IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.
A SPRAGUEVILLE MAN LIKELY DIED DECEMBER 3RD AFTER PUTTING HIS VEHICLE
IN THE MAQUOKETA RIVER NEAR SPRAGUEVILLE. SATURDAY (NEARLY 2 MONTHS LATER) MORNING, A HUNTER SPOTTED THE VEHICLE. WHEN THEY PULLED THE
2002 FORD ESCORT OUT OF THE RIVER, THEY FOUND HIM WITH IT. PROBABLY MEDICAL REASONS CONTRIBUTED TO HIS DEATH. AN AUTOPSY WILL BE
DONE. LAST TO SEE HIM WAS HIS EX-WIFE. SHE TOLD DEPUTIES HE HAD
BEEN STAYING WITH HER AND DECIDED TO MOVE WEST. HE LEFT HER HOME DECEMBER 3RD AND ASSUMED THAT IS WHERE HE WENT. HE IS ESTRANGED FROM
HIS FAMILY, SO NO ONE APPARENTLY MISSED HIM. HE IS JOSEPH RAYMOND CLARK, AGE 51 AND HIS LAST KNOWN ADDRESS WAS SPRAGUEVILLE. NO FOUL P LAY IS SUSPECTED. THINK ABOUT IT....NOT EVEN OVER THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY
DID SOMEONE CHECK ON HIM....OR REPORT HIM MISSING. QUITE A STORY.
MAYBE WE WILL LEARN MORE SOON.
TWO ACCIDENTS OVER THE WEEKEND.
JONATHON BOPES, AGE 17, OF MAQUOKETA, WAS IN ONE SATURDAY MORNING NORTH OF BALDWIN. HE SLID THROUGH THE INTERSECTION OF 67TH STREET
WITH 50TH AVENUE AND WENT INTO THE DITCH WHERE HIS VEHICLE ROLLED
ONCE. HIS 2007 FORD ESCAPE WAS TOTALED AND HE WAS NOT INJURED.
NO CHARGES FILED.
THE OTHER ACCIDENT HAPPENED SATURDAY AFTERNOON ON HIGHWAY 52 AT EAST FIRST STREET. THE ACCIDENT INVOLVED A SAVANNA WOMAN AND A LAMOTTE WOMAN. NO INJURIES. ONE VEHICLE PULLED INTO THE HIGHWAY AND DIDN'T SEE THE OTHER PARKED IN A PRIVATE PARKING LOT.
A MINOR ACCIDENT SATURDAY EVENING, INVOLVING MAYOR JASON HUTE.
LEANN WILLISON OF MAQUOKETA WAS STOPPED ON PLATT AT NIAGARA TO PULL INTO A PRIVATE DRIVE AND JASON HUTE, 39,WAS DRIVING BEHIND HER AND COULD NOT GET HIS CAR STOPPED. ROADS WERE SLICK ACCORDING TO THE POLICE
REPORT. NO CHARGES FILED AND NO INJURIES. DAMAGES WERE LISTED AT
$3,000 TO WILLISON'S 2004 CHRYSLER AND $5,000 DAMAGE TO HUTE'S 2007 PONTIAC.
THE BIG ANNUAL CAKE AUCTION WAS HELD AT THE MCHS GYM FRIDAY NIGHT
BETWEEN GAMES WITH DEWITT. $4,200 WAS RAISED FROM A TOTAL OF 56 CAKES
ENTERED. THEIR WERE THREE DIVISIONS AND FIRST PLACE IN THE 3 WERE
TAKEN BY ASHLEY QUINLAN....THE MAQUOKETA FAMILY CLINIC.....AND
THE MAQUOKETA CHEERLEADERS.
THE MAQUOKETA WRESTLERS TOOK 11TH PLACE IN THE 16 TEAM FIELD OF THE
WAMAC CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT HELD SATURDAY AT MANCHESTER.
YESTERDAY, AT THE SACRED HEART BREAKFAST (MY OMELET WAS DONE BY
FLORIAN STEFFEN) (AND DONE WELL) ... I SAT NEXT TO THE NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR (MANAGER) OF THE MAQUOKETA YMCA. HE IS SCOTT WARREN, AGE 39, A NATIVE OF ROCK ISLAND. SAID HE REMEMBERS GOING TO MY DRIVE-IN THEATRE YEARS AGO. HE COMES TO MAQUOKETA FROM A YMCA MANAGER JOB
IN PINBROOK-PINES, FLORIDA. SAID HE DIDN'T LIKE FLORIDA LIVING AND WAS GLAD TO BE BACK UP HERE. BEFORE GOING TO FLORIDA, HE WAS MANAGER
OF THE LONG ESTABLISHED TWO RIVERS YMCA AT MOLINE. HE IS MARRIED
AND THE FATHER OF THREE, THE OLDEST BEING 13. HE GRADUATED FROM THE
UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-LACROSSE. LETTERED AND PARTICIPATED IN SWIMMING THERE ALL 4 YEARS.
"TRUE GRIT" IS STILL DOING WELL IN ITS 3RD WEEK AT THE VOY 3 THEATRE.
I SAW IT FOR A SECOND TIME YESTERDAY. GOOD SHOW.
HAVE A GOOD WEEK, WITH SNOW OR NO SNOW.

CLICK-ON THIS PHOTO TO
ENLARGE IT. THIS IS THE OLD FAREWAY STORE BUILDING, UNDERGOING REMODELING TO MAKE IT READY FOR THE NEW
GOODWILL STORE. I SUPPOSE TO THE LEFT IS A NEW LOADING DOCK. AND WHAT THEY ARE DOING CLEAR ACROSS THE FRONT IS A MYSTERY. THEY ALSO HAVE PUT UP SOME WALLS IN THE INSIDE OF THE BUILDING, WHICH IS GOING TO
OPEN THIS SPRING. THEY ARE
ALREADY ADVERTISING FOR PART TIME EMPLOYEES.
ALSO IN BUSINESS NEWS, I JUST
READ A NOTE IN THE WINDOW OF THE EMPTY STORE BUILDING ON THE CORNER OF MAIN AND PLATT STREET, THAT SAYS A NEW BUSINESS IS COMING SOON. AND IT IS NOT THE BOMBFIRE PIZZA BUSINESS THAT WAS ANNOUNCED FOR THAT LOCATION LAST YEAR.
OVER CHRISTMAS, THE BUILDING WAS THE SITE OF A JEWELRY BUSINESS, OPEN
JUST FOR CHRISTMAS SHOPPERS. I'LL TAKE ANOTHER PHOTO OF GOODWILL
BUILDING LATER AND I'LL LET YOU KNOW WHAT I HEAR ABOUT THE NEW BUSINESS
ON THE CORNER OF MAIN AND PLATT.
SO, APPARENTLY NO BOMBFIRE PIZZA FOR MAQUOKETA. INCIDENTALLY, LAST NIGHT WHEN COMING BACK FROM SYCAMORE THROUGH SABULA, WE WENT
PAST THE BOMBFIRE PIZZA THERE AND IT WAS FULL OF PEOPLE, AT NEARLY
9 O'CLOCK. A LITTLE EARLIER, DRIVING THROUGH SAVANNA, WE WERE INTERESTED IN SEEING THAT NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE YET WITH THE MANNY'S PIZZA BUILDING THAT HAD A BAD FIRE LATE LAST YEAR. WORD IS, MANNY'S WILL REBUILD AND MEANWHILE, THEY ARE LOCATED IN DOWNTOWN SAVANNA IN THE FORMER HAPPY JOE'S LOCATION.... AND THEY ALSO HAS A BIG CROWD WHEN
WE WENT PAST. EVERYBODY LOVES PIZZA!

12 BELOW LAST NIGHT.
TODAY'S HIGH WITH SUNNY SKIES, 4 ABOVE. WARMER WEATHER AND A LITTLE
SNOW IN THE FORECAST FOR THE WEEKEND.
LAST NIGHT, IN WRESTLING HERE IN MAQUOKETA: SOLON DEFEATED
THE MAQUOKETA CARDINALS 48 TO 36 AND DEWITT BEAT THE CARDS,
48 TO 27. MAQUOKETA WILL WRESTLER IN THE MIDLAND TOURNAMENT
TOMORROW AT WYOMING.
TONIGHT, THE MAQUOKETA GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAMS PLAY AT VAN HORNE AGAINST BENTON COMMUNITY AND THE BOYS HOST BENTON AT THE NEW
MCHS GYM.
JACK MARLOWE IN HIS COLUMN LAST WEEK WROTE ABOUT OUR TWO LOCAL FATHER-SON BASKETBALL OFFICIALS. THEY ARE OWEN HAYES AND HIS SON JAKE, BOTH FORMER MCHS ATHLETES. OWEN, A 1980 GRAD, HAS BEEN AN OFFICIAL OVER 25 YEARS AND JAKE, WHO GRADUATED FROM MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL IN 2007, IS IN HIS SECOND YEAR WITH A TEMPORARY LICENSE. HE HAS NOT WORKED
A VARSITY GAME.
THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL WILL CONSIDER A TAX INCREASE DURING A BUDGET WORKSHOP MONDAY NIGHT. CITY MANAGER BRIAN WAGNER SAID HE HAS A BALANCED BUDGET RIGHT NOW WHICH CALLS FOR AN 85-CENT PER $1,000
ASSESSED VALUATION TAX INCREASE.
THE TAX RATE NOW IS $12.45 PER $1,000 ASSESSED VALUATION. THE PROPOSAL
CALLS FOR A TAX RATE OF $13.30. WAGNER SAID THIS WEEK THE CITY COULD
SEE $18,000 IN INCREASED REVENUES FROM ASSESSMENTS THIS YEAR. HE SAID
THAT'S NOT MUCH. IN THE UPCOMING CENSUS CHANGE, HE SAID MAQUOKETA
(IF THE CENSUS FIGURE IS LOWER) MAY SEE A REDUCTION OF $40,000 IN ROAD USE TAXES FROM THE STATE. THE 2009 ESTIMATE OF THE MAQUOKETA POPULATION IS 5,810. THE OFFICIAL 2010 CENSUS FIGURE FOR THE CITY HAS NOT YET BEEN RELEASED.
MAQUOKETA'S POPULATION HAS BEEN OVER 6,000 FOR MANY MANY YEARS,
BUT MAY GO UNDER THAT.
MAQUOKETA POLICE CHIEF BRAD KORANDA ASKED THE CITY'S PUBLIC SAFETY
COMMITTEE THIS WEEK TO INSTALL SOME ADDITIONAL LIGHTS AT LITTLE
BEAR PARK. NO DECISION HAS BEEN MADE. THERE HAVE BEEN SOME
PROBLEMS IN THE PARK THE PAST YEAR....BAD LANGUAGE, FIGHTS, ETC.
HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND AND WEAR ENOUGH CLOTHING.
IF YOU GET A CHANCE, CHECK THE NEW KMAQ TRAVEL PAGE.

SUNNY...COLD...HIGH 19 TODAY...
DOWN TO 10 BELOW TONIGHT.
A LONGTIME MAQUOKETA BUSINESSMAN, DUB ROMER, AGE 91, DIED LAST NIGHT
AT CRESTRIDGE NURSING HOME. THE CONNELL SUPPLY COMPANY, A ROOFING
AND SIDING BUSINESS, WAS ESTABLISHED IN MAQUOKETA IN 1938 BY E. C.
CONNELL. IN 1954, CONNELL SOLD THE BUSINESS TO HIS DAUGHTER AND SON-IN-LAW, PAUL AND MADELON ROMER AND MOVED TO MISSOURI. DUB ROMER'S BUSINESS WAS ONE OF THE FIRST FIVE ADVERTISERS ON KMAQ AND HAS BEEN
A REGULAR ADVERTISER EVER SINCE. DUB ROMER HAS BEEN ACTIVE IN MANY WAYS IN THE COMMUNITY....IN THE AMERICAN LEGION, VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS, A CHARTER MEMBER OF THE MAQUOKETA OPTIMIST CLUB, AND A LONGTIME
BOARD MEMBER OF MT. HOPE CEMETERY ASSOCIATION. HE WAS AN AVID
HAWKEYE FAN AND ATTENDED A LOT OF GAMES OVER THE YEARS IN IOWA
CITY. AND HE WAS A GOOD GOLFER TOO. A REALLY FINE GUY! HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS SON, CLAY AND FAMILY IN MAQUOKETA. ARRANGEMENTS ARE PENDING
AT CARSON AND SON FUNERAL HOME IN MAQUOKETA.
AT LEAST 20 VEHICLES THROUGHOUT MAQUOKETA WERE DAMAGED OVERNIGHT.
MOSTLY WINDOWS, TAILLIGHTS AND SIDE MORRORS WERE BROKEN. USED CAR DEALER MARK EDWARDS REPORTED SEVERAL CAR WINDOWS WERE BROKEN
ON VEHICLES SITTING IN HIS LOT ON JACOBSEN DRIVE.
I THINK WE NEED TO ADD MORE FUNDS TO CRIME STOPPERS AND START PUSHING CRIME STOPPERS MORE IN BOTH MAQUOKETA AND THE COUNTY. THE CRIME STOPPERS PROGRAM IS A GOOD ONE AND SHOULD BE USED MORE.
LONGTIME COUNTRY MUSIC SINGER CRAIG MORGAN WILL BE THE GRANDSTAND
ENTERTAINER ON SATURDAY NIGHT OF THIS YEAR'S JACKSON COUNTY
FAIR. ONE OF HIS BIG HITS WAS "INTERNATIONAL TRACTOR".
NEW THIS YEAR AT THE FAIR WILL BE A LUMBER JACK SHOW ON OPENING
NIGHT, JULY 27TH. ALSO NEW WILL BE AN ALLIGATOR SHOW.
THE JACKSON COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS WILL HOST A PUBLIC HEARING
NEXT WEEK SEEKING PUBLIC INPUT ON WHETHER THEY SHOULD SELL THE OLD TRUCK STOP BUILDING AND LAND ON THE HIGHWAY 61 BYPASS, MAQUOKETA.
THEY WANT TO SELL IT NOW THAT THE DNR SAYS THE LAND IS FREE OF CONTAMINATION FROM LEAKING GASOLINE TANKS. THEY ALSO HAVE
A PARCEL OF LAND ALONG CRESLANE THEY WOULD LIKE TO SELL, A PROPERTY
THE COUNTY GOT BACK AFTER TAXES WERE NOT PAID.
AFTER THE PUBLIC HEARING, THE NEXT STEP WOULD BE SEEKING BIDS FOR THE TWO PROPERTIES.
DON'T FORGET THE WRESTLING MATCHES TONIGHT AT THE GYM THAT I
MENTIONED LAST NIGHT ON THIS REPORT. THEY WILL BE BROADCAST
TONIGHT ON KMAQ-FM AND OUR WEB SITE, STARTING JUST BEFORE 6,
WITH LEIGHTON HEPKER AND JEFF TAMPIER AT THE HOLD-BY-HOLD MIKE.
HERE'S TO NO FROZEN PIPES AT YOUR HOUSE TONIGHT. AT MY HOUSE,
I HAVE TO LEAVE A COUPLE UNDER THE SINK CUPBOARD DOORS OPEN.

IN BOY'S BASKETBALL LAST NIGHT, MT. VERNON DEFEATED MAQUOKETA,

WITH LEIGHTON, HE WILL DESCRIBE THE MATCHES BETWEEN MAQUOKETA AND SOLON AND MAQUOKETA AND DEWITT.
IOWA SECRETARY OF AGRICULTURE BILL NORTHEY WILL SPEAK AT NOON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9TH AT THE KMAQ FARM AND HOME SHOW.
MORE ABOUT THE SHOW LATER.
THE CITY OF MAQUOKETA WILL BE LOOKING FOR A RESOLUTION TO PROHIBIT
WEAPONS AT ALL CITY PROPERTIES, INCLUDING CITY HALL AND CITY PARKS.
THIS IS BEING DONE ALL OVER IOWA SINCE THE IOWA LEGISLATURE TOOK OFF RESTRICTIONS ON PERMITS AND NOW RESIDENTS CAN CARRY A LOADED WEAPON OR A SHOTGUN WITHOUT IT BEING CASED.
ALSO, LOCAL BUSINESSES CAN PUT UP SIGNS WHICH WOULD NOT ALLOW CUSTOMERS TO ENTER THEIR PREMISES WITH A WEAPON.
IOWA 0 AND 5 IN THE BIG TEN AGAINST #1 OHIO STATE (19 AND 0) TONIGHT.

MOSTLY CLOUDY TODAY.....IN MID 20'S.
THURSDAY NIGHT, DOWN TO 12 BELOW.
MAQUOKETA BOYS PLAY AT MT. VERNON TONIGHT.
THE GIRLS HOST MT. VERNON. THEY ARE RANKED 2ND AND HAVE LOST
JUST ONE GAME.
THE MAN WHO WAS INJURED IN A FIGHT LAST WEEK IS NOW RECUPERATING
AT HOME. POLICE CHIEF BRAD KORANDA SAID RICHARD ALLEN WAS RELEASED
YESTERDAY FROM THE IOWA CITY UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL. KORANDA SAID
IT IS STILL UNCLEAR WHAT HAPPENED TO RESULT IN THE INJURIES.
THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES BY THE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND THE
DEPARTMENT OF CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION.
AT LAST NIGHT'S CITY COUNCIL MEETING, CITY MANAGER WAGNER SAID THE MAQUOKETA PUBLIC WORKS STAFF HAS SUGGESTED THE OLD OUTDOOR POOL
SITE BE RENOVATED INTO A PARK WITH THE POOL BEING ALTERED TO
MAKE IT INTO A SKATING RINK. THE COUNCIL DECIDED IT SHOULD BE
CONSIDERED.
THERE WILL BE STILL ANOTHER JUDGE POSITION OPEN IN THE SEVENTH
JUDICIAL DISTRICT. JUDGE JAMES KELLY HAS ANNOUNCED HIS RETIREMENT.
JUST LAST WEEK, GOV. CHET CULVER APPOINTED A MUSCATINE MAN TO
FILL A TERM. MAQUOKETA ATTORNEY MARK LAWSON WAS ONE OF TWO
FINALISTS FOR THAT POSITION. I ASSUME LAWSON WILL NOW APPLY FOR
THIS POSITION TOO.
AT LAST NIGHT'S MEETING OF THE COUNCIL, THERE WAS DISCUSSION ON WHAT
TO DO WITH THE EMPTY LAND WHERE THE BURNED DOWN BUILDINGS STOOD
3 YEARS AGO. THE LAND IS OWNED BY THE CITY AND MIDAS, THE CITY'S
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE. ANY IDEAS?
THE LITTLE CHRISTMAS TREE THAT WAS ON THE SITE IS STILL STANDING

IS IN THE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL IN IOWA CITY, BEING TREATED FOR A CUT ON HIS NECK. THE FIGHT WAS APPARENTLY WITH TODD CLARK, AGE 36, OF MAQUOKETA. POLICE CHIEF BRAD KORANDA SAID CLARK AND OTHERS
AT THE HOUSE, AT 311 N. MAIN STREET, ARE SUSPECTS AND THAT NO ONE IS SAYING WHAT CAUSED THE INJURY.. THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF CRIMINAL
INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN CALLED IN BECAUSE THERE ARE A LOT OF QUESTIONS
ABOUT THE INCIDENT.

KMAQ WAS OFF THE AIR WELL OVER AN HOUR THIS MORNING WHILE
A DUBUQUE TOWER MAN CHANGED THE 8 LIGHT BULBS ON THE 400 FOOT TOWER JUST NORTHEAST OF MAQUOKETA. A COUPLE WERE BURNED OUT AND OTHERS WOULD BE GOING OUT SOON ALSO. PLUS HE FOUND A SHORT THAT NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED. QUITE A JOB, ESPECIALLY IN 10-DEGREE

PARTLY SUNNY TODAY....HIGH OF 22. COLD TONIGHT...AROUND 1 ABOVE AND
PARTLY SUNNY AGAIN TOMORROW WITH A HIGH OF 19 AND SLIGHT CHANCE OF MORE
SNOW.
THREE MINOR ACCIDENTS IN MAQUOKETA YESTERDAY AND ALL HAD OUT OF TOWN
DRIVERS AND NO INJURIES.
ON THE POLICE BLOTTER, JOE BULLOCK REPORTED YESTERDAY MORNING THAT TWO
OF HIS TRUCKS WERE VANDALIZED AT 113 E. MONROE STREET. THE WINDOWS HAD BEEN BROKEN.
LAST NIGHT, BOTH THE MAQUOKETA BOYS AND GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAMS
LOST TO SOLON.
AND, THE WRESTLERS DEFEATED ANAMOSA.
ROTARIAN DR. MELVIN BERNARD GAVE THE PROGRAM TODAY AT ROTARY,
ABOUT THE EARLY DAYS WHEN HE CAME TO MAQUOKETA AS AN OPTOMETRIST
IN 1949, AFTER HE GOT HIS DEGREE IN CHICAGO. HIS HOMETOWN WAS EAGLE GROVE AND HE CHOSE MAQUOKETA TO GO INTO BUSINESS BECAUSE HE ALWAYS LIKED THE TOWN AS HE TRAVELED FROM HIS HOMETOWN TO CHICAGO AND BACK AND ALSO LIKED THE FACT THAT MAQUOKETA WAS IN THOSE DAYS ALWAYS A TOP COUNTY SEAT TOWN IN IOWA FOR SALES TAX FIGURES. HE STARTED WITH EQUIPMENT VALUED AT $2,000 (WITH MONEY HE BORROWED FROM HIS WIFE,
NOW DECEASED) AND HAD A HARD TIME FINDING A PLACE TO LOCATE HIS
OFFICE. HIS FIRST OFFICE WAS A SMALL ROOM IN THE HURST HOTEL.
THAT DIDN'T WORK AND AFTER 6 MONTHS OF DOING BAD BUSINESS,
HE RENTED A LARGER 3-ROOM PLACE NEAR THE HURST AND BUSINESS PICKED UP. THEN IN THE 50'S, HE BOUGHT THE BUILDING (AGAIN NEAR THE HURST) HE USED FOR MOST OF HIS CAREER UNTIL RETIRING. HE STILL OWNS AND RENTS OUT
THAT BUILDING TO ATTORNEY TOM BREUCH AND SOMEONE IN THE UPSTAIRS
APARTMENT. HE HAS COFFEE WITH US MORNINGS AT THE DECKER, STILL
DOES A LITTLE DUCK HUNTING (HIS FAVORITE SPORT OVER THE YEARS) AND
ENJOYS VISITING HIS KIDS AND GRANDKIDS NOT TOO FAR AWAY. IN 1949,
YOU COULD GET YOURS EYES CHECKED AND NEW GLASSES FOR ABOUT $25 TOTAL
AND YOU HAD A CHOICE OF A DRAWER-FULL OF FRAMES TO CHOOSE FROM.
GOOD ROTARY PROGRAM BY DOC WHO NEVER MISSES A ROTARY MEETING.
SOMEONE ASKED IF HE EVER PAID BACK THE $2,000 TO HIS WIFE. HIS ANSWER,
NO. HE LIVES ON SWAGOSA DRIVE OVERLOOKING THE GOLF COURSE AND
STILL PLAYS A LITTLE GOLF. I'M SURE MANY OF YOU HAD YOUR EYES CHECKED
BY HIM YEARS AGO.
GOOD NIGHT MRS. CALABASH WAS THE SIGN-OFF AFTER EVERY SHOW BY...
JIMMY DURANTE. THE FOLLOWING (OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER) EMAILED ME THE CORRECT ANSWER: TIM NELSON...SHIRLEY MILLER...BILL LUCKEY....LEN AND MARY JANE MOREHEAD ....DENNIS BECK.....AND SHEILA BENTLEY. JIMMY WAS ALSO KNOW FOR HAVING A BIG NOSE.
SHEILA ALSO ASKED ME TO MENTION HERE THAT 70% OF THE MONEY RAISED
BEFORE CHRISTMAS FOR THE SALVATION ARMY STAYS IN JACKSON COUNTY AND THE REST GOES TO THE SALVATION ARMY HEADQUARTERS IN PEORIA.
IOWA AGAINST NORTHWESTERN TONIGHT. THE HAWKS NEED A BIG TEN WIN!
GO HAWKS.

I LOST ANOTHER FRIEND YESTERDAY! TOM RAY, 75, DIED LAST NIGHT. ONE OF THE FIRST MAQUOKETA RESIDENTS I MET WHEN I CAME TO TOWN IN 1958. TOM HAD JUST JOINED HIS DAD (MAX) IN THE MAX RAY JEWELERY STORE, ALMOST BELOW THE KMAQ STUDIOS WHICH WERE UP STAIRS AT 136 SOUTH MAIN. WE WERE BUSINESS NEIGHBORS FOR 12 YEARS UNTIL THE COAST TO COAST STORE FIRE MOVED KMAQ TO OUR PRESENT LOCATION. YEAR AFTER YEAR, TOM ADVERTISED HIS BUSINESS ON KMAQ. AND WE DID A LOT THINGS OUTSIDE OF WORK IN THOSE EARLY YEARS, INCLUDING BACKING THE MAQUOKETA CARDINALS, ESPECIALLY IN WRESTLING. REMEMBER WELL HIS WHITE CORVETTE. HE HAD A BAD STROKE NEARLY A DOZEN YEARS AGO AND HAS LIVED UPSTAIRS OVER THE STORE, UNABLE TO WORK. HIS WIFE ROCHELLE HAS RUN THE STORE AND CARED FOR TOM SINCE. HIS MIND WAS GOOD, BUT IT WAS HARD FOR HIM TO TALK AND HE DID GET AROUND WITH A WALKER. HE ENJOYED GOING OUT TO EAT AT LOCAL AND AREA RESTAURANTS. HIS COMPLETE OBITUARY IS AT THE LAHEY FUNERAL HOME WEB SITE. THE FUNERAL IS FRIDAY. MY SYMPATHY TO THE FAMILY!
THANKS FOR CHECKING IN.

SUNNY AND COLD OUT.
HIGH TODAY WILL BE IN UPPER TEENS.
OUR MAQUOKETA HOSPITAL LADIES AUXILIARY MEMBERS DONATED $12,000 TO THE HOSPITAL IN THE LAST YEAR.
THE MONEY WAS RAISED OVER FOUR YEARS, WITH INCOME FROM THE HOSPITAL GIFT SHOP, BRIDGE MARATHONS, MEMORIALS AND DUES.
THE MONEY RAISED AND DONATED WAS USED FOR THE HOSPITAL'S NEW REHABILITATION CENTER.
THE AUXILIARY ALSO PROVIDED SEVEN SCHOLARSHIPS AT A TOTAL OF $4,700.
THERE WERE 12 NEW MEMBERS THAT JOINED IN 2010 BRINGING TOTAL
MEMBERSHIP TO 75. WANDA CORNELIUS AND THELMA NISSEN ARE CO-CHAIRMEN
OF THE AUXILIARY. ARLENE McCUTCHEON IS VICE-CHAIRMAN, VELMA WITT IS SECOND VICE-PRESIDENT, VIOLA KILBURG IS THE SECRETARY AND LOIS MYATT
IS TREASURER. THE BEAUTY SHOP IS NO LONGER IN OPERATION, BUT THE
GIFT SHOP IS OPEN SIX DAYS A WEEK.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE AUXILIARY FOR A GREAT 2010 AND WE WISH
THEM BIG SUCCESS AGAIN THIS YEAR. A FINE ORGANIZATION FOR OUR TOWN.
IN 1958, WHEN KMAQ WENT ON THE AIR, THE FIRST NEWS DIRECTOR WAS
STAN BARTON. STAN, AGE 78, OF ELWOOD, INDIANA, DIED IN HIS SLEEP
DECEMBER 18TH AT ELWOOD. HE WAS HERE AT KMAQ OVER A YEAR AND
THEN WENT TO KROS IN CLINTON. LATER ON, HE OWNED THE RADIO STATION
IN ELWOOD, INDIANA. HE IS SURVIVED BY A SON, DAUGHTER AND GRAND DAUGHTER, ALL IN THE STATE OF WASHINGTON. ALSO A SISTER IN DUBUQUE. HE AND I WERE GOOD FRIENDS THAT FIRST YEAR AND DID A LOT OF TEEN HOPS TOGETHER IN THIS AREA. AND WE ATE A LOT OF GEORGE'S HOME-COOKED FOOD AT THE FAMOUS GREEN MILL RESTAURANT IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA. HE STOPPED HERE FOR A SHORT VISIT IN THE EARLY 70'S AND SAW OUR NORTH MAIN BUILDING. WHEN HE WORKED HERE, WE WERE THEN UPSTAIRS AT 136 1/2 SOUTH MAIN STREET. I HAVE NOT HEARD FROM HIM AGAIN SINCE THAT VISIT.
HAPPY NEW YEAR! I'LL BE CHEERING FOR THE WISCONSIN BADGERS THIS
AFTERNOON IN THE ROSE BOWL GAME. FOR TWO REASONS OF COURSE:
I WAS BORN IN WISCONSIN (CAME HERE IN 1958) AND I ATTENDED THE
UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN FOR A SHORT TIME AFTER HIGH SCHOOL.
I DIDN'T LIKE COLLEGE. DECIDED I WANTED TO GET INTO RADIO IMMEDIATELY.
AND SO I DID. AND HERE I AM...WORKING ON NEW YEARS DAY. THE MAIN BAD
THING ABOUT RADIO IS THAT THE FCC REQUIRES RADIO STATIONS TO BE
ON-THE-AIR EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR. THIS IS MY 51ST NEW YEARS DAY
AT KMAQ (MISSED TWO WHEN IN ARMY) AND I BET I WORKED NEW YEARS DAY
48 OF THOSE.
