THE NEW LOOK AT MY THEATRE! THE LEFT BUILDING (THE CHIEF
THEATRE IN 1950) WAS THE CINEMA ICE CREAM SHOP (OPENED IN 1981) AND LATER CHANGED TO CINEMA MOVIE RENTALS. IT CLOSED A FEW YEARS AGO
AND HAS BEEN USED FOR CONCESSION SUPPLIES. TO THE BACK OF THIS BUILDING IS THE SMALL VOY 3 THEATRE THAT NOW HAS THE 77 NEW SEATS. AND THE FRONT WINDOWS ARE USED TO ADVERTISE OUR UPCOMING MOVIES WITH LARGE MOVIE POSTERS SUPPLIED BY THE FILM COMPANIES.
THE OLD BLUE COLOR WAS GETTING FADED AND WAS IN NEED OF PAINTING. NOW, THE COLOR TIES IN WITH THE THEATRE NEXT DOOR. NOT A BIG PROJECT, BUT AN IMPROVEMENT FOR DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA.

REMEMBER A COUPLE DAYS AGO ON THIS DAILY WHEN I PUT UP A PHOTO OF
A CHAIR THAT WAS USED FOR TWO DAYS AT THE VIETNAM MOVING WALL
BY THE WIFE OF A SERVICEMAN LISTED ON THE WALL? ABOVE, SHE IS PAT SCHROEDER BARNES OF MT. VERNON, IOWA AND POINTS TO THE NAME OF HER HUSBAND, JERRY. SHE SAID HE WAS A GREEN BERET IN THE SPECIAL FORCES AND DIED IN VIETNAM IN JANUARY OF 1968. SHE DID NOT SIT IN THAT CHAIR
FOR THE ENTIRE 48 HOURS BECAUSE SHE IS DISABLED AND SO SPENT THE
NIGHTS AT A MAQUOKETA MOTEL. SHE ALSO WAS IN THE SERVICE AND SPENT 18 YEARS IN THE U.S. ARMY. SHE AND JERRY WERE MARRIED IN OCTOBER
OF 1967 AND SPENT JUST 3 DAYS TOGETHER BEFORE HE WAS SENT TO
VIETNAM AND HE WAS WOUNDED DECEMBER, SENT TO TEXAS IN THE BURN UNIT AND DIED THAT JANUARY.
QUITE A STORY!

ANOTHER NICE DAY, 82 THE HIGH.
THERE WILL BE A FAREWELL RETIREMENT RECEPTION TOMORROW
FROM 2 UNTIL 4 P.M. AT THE MAQUOKETA CITY HALL, FOR DOUG OWEN
OF MAQUOKETA, WHO HAS RETIRED AS THE MANAGER OF THE
MAQUOKETA MUNICIPAL ELECTRIC UTILITY. CAKE AND PUNCH WILL BE
SERVED.
THE JACKSON COUNTY REGIONAL HEALTH CENTER (HOSPITAL) WILL OFFER
OUTPATIENT GYNECOLOGY AND OBSTECTRIC SERVICES STARTING IN
EARLY AUGUST. "THE GROUP" FROM DAVENPORT HAS BEEN CONTRACTED
WITH THE HOSPITAL TO COME ONCE A WEEK ON TUESDAYS TO SEE WOMEN
AT THE HOSPITAL. THERE ARE 7 PHYSICIANS. NO BABIES WILL BE
BORN HERE HOWEVER. ALL BABIES WILL BE DELIVERED AT THE GENESIS MEDICAL CENTER IN DAVENPORT. THE GOOD PART OF THIS IS THAT
WOMEN WILL NOT HAVE TO TRAVEL OUT OF TOWN FOR OB/GYN SERVICES.
THE HOSPITAL IS STILL WORKING WITH ATTORNEYS TO COME UP WITH
A FAIR MARKET VALUE FOR SURGERY SERVICES FOR THE HOSPITAL.
A DAVENPORT SURGERY GROUP IS EXPECTED TO PROVIDE SURGERY NEEDS
HERE.
THE JACKSON COUNTY RELAY FOR LIFE RAISED $58,534 FRIDAY NIGHT
INTO SATURDAY MORNING AT THE FAIRGROUNDS LAST WEEKEND, ABOUT THE SAME AS THE YEAR BEFORE. THERE WERE 2,905 LUMINARIAS LIT ON THE
TRACK, DOWN A BIT FROM 2010. THE AUCTION WENT VERY WELL WITH
19 TEAMS PARTICIPATING. WEATHER WAS PERFECT FOR THE OUTDOOR
ANNUAL EVENT AND SOME DONATIONS ARE STILL COMING IN.
THANKS FOR CHECKING IN.

SUNNY, A LITTLE BREEZY TODAY AND A HIGH OF 82. DRY AND WARM
WEATHER IS FORECAST FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK.
SOME THEFTS AND A VANDALISM INCIDENT WERE REPORTED TO THE
MAQUOKETA POLICE.
CHRIS NELSON SAID HIS SON HAD A CHAIN SAW IN THE BACK OF HIS
TRUCK PARKED AT WALMART FRIDAY AND THE SAW WAS TAKEN.
DONNA KOONTZ AT 1301 EAST PLATT STREET REPORTED TWO PURSES
WERE STOLEN SUNDAY NIGHT.
AND BOWMAN OIL ON SOUTH MAIN STREET SAID THIS MORNING THAT SOMEONE HIT THE PUMPS AT THE GAS STATION SOMETIME SUNDAY NIGHT.
CARS 2 WAS A BIG HIT AT THE 61 DRIVE-IN THEATRE OVER THE WEEKEND,
AS IT WAS AT OTHER DRIVE-IN'S AROUND THE COUNTRY. HAD A FULL

AFTER A RAINY SATURDAY. BUT THE RAIN STOPPED LATE SATURDAY
AFTERNOON AND THE CARS STARTED ARRIVING AT 5:30.
THERE WAS ENOUGH RAIN TO PREVENT STOCK CAR RACES SATURDAY NIGHT,
BUT THE FIREWORKS DISPLAY WAS HELD AS SCHEDULED AT 10 P.M. IN FRONT
OF THE GRANDSTAND.
HAVE A GOOD WEEK.

RON HORAN, JR, OF RURAL MAQUOKETA, WAS THE KEY MAN BEHIND THE
MOVING WALL APPEARANCE HERE IN MAQUOKETA THE LAST 5 DAYS.
IT WAS HIS IDEA AND HE QUICKLY GOT SUPPORT FROM LOTS OF OTHER
PEOPLE. HE FORMED A COMMITTEE AND WEEK AFTER WEEK, MORE PEOPLE
CAME TO THE ANNOUNCED MEETING PLACES. THEY RAISED THE $10,000
NECESSARY FOR THE WALL TO COME TO JACKSON COUNTY AND THEY
WORKED OUT ALL THE DETAILS FOR THE VISIT, LEADING UP TO THE
OPENING DAY JUNE 23RD. I TALKED TO HIM THIS AFTERNOON AND HE
IS A VERY HAPPY PERSON THAT IT HAS BEEN A MUCH-APPRECIATED EVENT.
THOUSANDS CAME TO VIEW THE WALL, DAY AND NIGHT. VOLUNTEERS WORKED 24 HOURS A DAY KEEPING IT OPEN, LIGHTED AND GUARDING
IT. IT MOVES WEST TO ANOTHER STATE NOW. THE CLOSING CEREMONY
AT 3 THIS AFTERNOON LASTED FOR ABOUT 25 MINUTES. THERE WAS NO GUEST SPEAKER. MAQUOKETA BUSINESSMAN AND MEMBER OF THE JACKSON
COUNTY SUPERVISORS, JACK WILLEY, SANG THREE SONGS. THE LOCAL AND
AREA SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS POSTED THE UNIT COLORS, THE BELLEVUE
AMERICAN LEGION POST 273 DID THE 21 GUN SALUTE, PASTOR NATHAN COMBS GAVE THE INVOCATION AND THE BENEDICTION AS HE DID THURSDAY AT THE OPENING CEREMONY, TOM WATTERS, MAQUOKETA VFW COMMANDER
READ THE NAMES OF MAQUOKETA AREA SOLDIERS LISTED ON THE WALL,
GIRL SCOUTS KATIE AND JENNA (SISTERS) BREITBACH OF MAQUOKETA,
SAID THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE AND TAPS WAS PLAYED BY KENT CRAWFORD
AND ECHO TAPS BY COLTON FELLER. FINIALLY, THE COLORS WERE RETIRED....
THE U.S....IOWA AND MIA-POW FLAGS. IT WAS A NICE CEREMONY UNDER SUNNY AND BREEZY SKIES. THE TURN-OUT WAS LESS THAN LAST THURSDAY, BUT STILL GOOD. IT WAS MY PLEASURE AGAIN TO SERVE AS MC.
WE BROADCAST THE CEREMONY ON KMAQ AND ALSO RECORDED IT.
LATER TODAY OR TOMORROW, YOU CAN LISTEN TO IT AT www.maquoketavfw.webs.com

DAY WITH A HIGH OF 82.
THE VISITOR CENTER (YEARS AGO THE SAGER'S MUSEUM BUILDING) AT THE MAQUOKETA CAVES STATE PARK HAS BEEN CLOSED THIS SEASON DUE TO LACK OF VISITORS. IT WILL RE-OPEN AGAIN ON A REGULAR WEEKEND BASIS WHEN ACCESS TO THE CAVES IS AGAIN ALLOWED. IT WILL OPEN FOR SPECIAL NEEDS THOUGH. FOR INSTANCE, IT WILL BE OPEN SATURDAY, SUNDAY AND MONDAY DURING THE JULY 4TH HOLIDAY AND AGAIN DURING LABOR DAY WEEKEND, WHEN TRAFFIC AT THE PARK IS HEAVIER THAN A NORMAL WEEKEND. AND THE CENTER
WILL ALSO OPEN FOR GROUP TOURS BY APPOINTMENT. CONTACT
THE PARK RANGER, SCOTT DYKSTRA, AT 652-5833.
AND SPREAD THE WORD THAT THE PARK IS OPEN FOR PICNICS, CAMPING,
HIKING, ETC. ONLY CLOSED, THE WALK-THROUGH CAVES. THERE
IS A NICE RV PARK TOO.

A COUPLE YEARS AGO, HE AND DOROTHY MOVED THERE TO BE

YESTERDAY, WHEN I PULLED OFF HIGHWAY 61 TO GO TO
FULTON, THIS IS WHAT
I SAW DRIVING INTO TOWN.
IN THE BACKGROUND IS
THE HOME OF MILO AND
LAUREL BAKER AND AS YOU
SEE HERE, THEIR DRIVEWAY
IS LINED WITH VINTAGE
IH AND JOHN DEERE TRACTORS, ALL RESTORED
BY MILO. AND HE HAS OTHERS TOO. MILO WASN'T HOME BUT LAUREL CAME OUT TO VISIT AND EXPLAIN
THAT THESE TRACTORS ARE LINED-UP EVERY SUNDAY MORNING AND
REMAIN THERE UNTIL LATE IN THE DAY, AND ARE VISABLE FROM
THE HIGHWAY. MANY CARS STOP IN TO TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AND YOU
CAN TOO. THE BAKERS HAVE FARMED IN THE AREA FOR OVER 40 YEARS
AND MILO HAS BEEN RESTORING TRACTORS ABOUT AS LONG, OR LONGER.

FULTON, IOWA, ABOUT 9 MILES NORTH OF MAQUOKETA ON THE
WEST SIDE OF HIGHWAY 61, IS THE BOYHOOD HOME OF RED HINTON.
WHEN HIGHWAY 61 WAS 4-LANED, THE CHURCH WAS IN THE WAY AND
WAS GOING TO BE LOST. HOWEVER, RED AND OTHERS INTERESTED IN
SAVING IT, RAISED FUNDS AND HAD IT MOVED FROM ALONG THE HIGHWAY
TO DOWNTOWN FULTON. A NEW BASEMENT WAS BUILT AND THE OLD
CHURCH WAS PLACED AND REFURBISHED. LOOKS NICE, RIGHT?
THEY NOW HAVE A SERVICE THE 2ND AND 4TH SUNDAY OF EVERY MONTH,
AT NEW TIME OF 11 A.M. WITH LUNCH AFTER. NANCY AND I ATTENDED
THE SERVICE THIS MORNING AND ENJOY GOOD FOOD AFTER. THERE
WERE ABOUT 20 PRESENT. THEIR NEXT BIG PROJECT IS TO RAISE MONEY,
ABOUT $5,000, TO PUT ON A NEW ROOF. I CONTRIBUTED TO THE FUND
AND YOU ARE WELOME TO DO SO ALSO. DROVE AROUND FULTON AND
IT HAS SOME NICE HOMES, SOME FAIRLY NEW. AND LOTS OF NICE PEOPLE
LIVING THERE.

64 TODAY AFTER STORMS LAST NIGHT AND NEARLY AN INCH OF RAIN.
TOMORROW WILL ALSO BE COOL AND WET BUT NICE WEATHER IS
EXPECTED FOR SATURDAY AND SUNDAY.
THIS IS MY SECOND WRITING OF TODAY'S DAILY...THE FIRST DIDN'T GO UP ON THE BLOG AND I LOST IT. THIS HAPPENS OCCASSIONALLY AND IS FRUSTRATING AS MANY OF YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU LOOSE AN EMAIL.
BIG STORY TODAY IS THAT LITTLE BEAR PARK AND THE ADJACENT PICNIC
PAVILLION ARE IN BAD SHAPE. THE PARK MAY BE CLOSED. IT IS 20 YEARS AGO AND WAS BUILT BY COMMUNITY DONATIONS AND LABOR. TODAY, TO REPLACE IT
WOULD COST $150,000. IT IS NEXT TO BRIGG'S SCHOOL.
SORRY, BUT NOW NO TIME FOR MORE TODAY.

NICE SUNNY DAY AGAIN!
ATTENDED THE FIREMEN'S BREAKFAST THIS MORNING.....
THEN TO FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH 9 A.M. SERVICE.
THE FIREMEN AND WIVES HAVE QUITE A SYSTEM FOR IT....NEVER A LINE....
AND GOOD FOOD OF COURSE. FIRST LUTHERAN IS STILL IN THE PROCESS
OF CALLING A NEW PASTOR TO SUCCEED PASTOR JERRY GJERDE WHO RETIRED IN JANUARY. THEY HOPE TO HAVE SOMEONE BY LATE THIS YEAR.
YESTERDAY, I DID A REMOTE BROADCAST FROM THE DELMAR DEPOT, NOW REOPENED BY THE ROCK ISLAND LINE SOCIETY. THEY RENT THE DEPOT FROM THE CITY AND HAVE MADE IT INTO A FIRST CLASS RAILROAD MUSUEM, OPEN WEEKEND.
NO ADMISSION. BUT THEY MIGHT LIKE YOU TO BUY SOMETHING IN THEIR
GIFT SHOP. WILL BE A GOOD TOURIST ATTRACTION FOR DELMAR.
TODAY, I WILL DO A REMOTE BROADCAST FROM CLOVER RIDGE ASSISTED LIVING PLACE UP ON THE HILL NEAR THE 61-64 INTERSECTION. ONE OF THE RESIDENTS
IS GOING TO BE TREATED TO A HOT AIR BALLOON RIDE. IF YOU LIVE IN
MAQUOKETA, KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE SKY AROUND 6 TONIGHT OR COME ON UP AND WATCH. THEY WILL HAVE FREE ICECREAM TOO.
THE MAQUOKETA NEWSPAPER BUILDING ON WEST QUARRY STREET, ACROSS THE
STREET NORTH OF POST OFFICE, IS UP FOR SALE. SINCE THEY NO LONGER PRINT THE PAPER THERE, THEY HAVE MORE ROOM THAN NEEDED. THE PAPER IS PRINTED
AT WEB PRINTING IN THE INDUSTRIAL AREA OF MAQUOKETA, WHICH THEY OWN.
THE NEWSPAPER STAFF, AFTER SOME REMODELING, WILL MOVE INTO THE
WEB BUILDING. THE BUILDING ON QUARRY WAS BUILT IN 1965 AND WHEN IT OPENED, THERE WERE LARGE WINDOWS ON THE EAST SIDE AND THROUGH THOSE
YOU COULD SEE THE BIG PRESS PRINTING THE PAPER. BOB MELVOLD WAS OWNER THEN (NOW DECEASED)AND TYPED LOTS OF STORIES THERE OVER THE YEARS.
I'M NOT SURE IF HE EVER WENT COMPUTER BEFORE HE DIED. HIS WIFE FRANCIS
LIVE HERE IN THE SUMMER AND IN FLORIDA IN WINTER. THE MELVOLD FAMILY
RUNS THE PAPER (ALSO BELLEVUE HERALD) AND THE WEB PRINTING COMPANY.
WONDER WHO WILL BUY THAT NICE BUILDING DOWNTOWN, WITH A COUPLE PARKING LOTS. I WILL KEEP YOU POSTED.
THE HIGH WINDS BLEW DOWN MANY FLAGS LAST SUNDAY IN MAQUOKETA, THAT
WERE IN THE AVENUE OF FLAGS AT MT. HOPE CEMETERY. FIRST, RAIN GOT
THEM WET AND THEN THE STORM BEGAN AND THE WEIGHT OF THE WET FLAGS
BENT THE POLES. ALL 350 FLAGS WERE TAKEN DOWN AND PUT UP TO DRY
AT THE PEARSON CENTER ON THE FAIRGROUNDS. MONDAY NIGHT, THEY WERE
FOLDED AND PUT AWAY, EXCEPT FOR NEARLY 100 THAT NEED TO BE REPLACED.
THE NAME OF EACH DONAR IS ON EACH FLAG AND THE FAMILY WILL BE NOTIFIED.
THEN, IT IS HOPED THESE FAMILIES AND COMMUNITY DONATIONS WILL RAISE ENOUGH TO REPLACE THEM. THE POLE AND FLAG COST OVER $100.
COMMANDERS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION (CLIFF MERRICK) AND VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS (TOM WATTERS) WILL HEAD-UP THE FUND DRIVE. MORE ON THAT
LATER. THE FLAGS WERE NOT UP FOR MAQUOKETA'S MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE
MONDAY MORNING BECAUSE OF THE STORM.
I GAVE THE MEMORIAL DAY ADDRESS AT THE OXFORD JUNCTION CEMETERY....
HIGH UP ON A HILL....AND IT WAS WINDY THERE MONDAY MORNING. THEY
ALSO HAVE AN AVENUE OF FLAGS. TOOK A LITTLE DOING ....HOLDING THE MIKE IN ONE HAND AND THE NOTE PAPERS IN THE OTHER, BUT I MANAGED. NANCY SAID I
DID GOOD.
THE HALF-SCALE VIETNAM MEMORIAL ARRIVES IN MAQUOKETA JUNE 23RD, FOR 5 DAYS. IT IS NEARLY A FOOTBALL FIELD LONG, MADE OF ALUMINUM PANELS AND
HAS THE NAMES ON THEM OF OVER 50,000 KILLED IN VIETNAM. THERE WILL BE AN OPENING CEREMONY AT 4 P.M. THE 23RD AND THE STATE COMMANDER OF THE
AMERICAN LEGION WILL SPEAK. THE DISPLAY WILL BE ON THE FAIRGROUNDS AND UNDER 24 HOUR GUARD. THOUSANDS ARE EXPECTED TO VISIT MAQUOKETA TO SEE IT. NO OTHER IOWA APPEARANCE OF IT THIS YEAR. THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY WILL HAVE A VIETNAM WAR PROGRAM AT THEIR MUSEUM ON THE FAIRGROUNDS THAT SUNDAY AFTERNOON. IT IS COSTING THOUSANDS TO BRING THE WALL TO MAQUOKETA AND THERE HAS BEEN AN ON-GOING FUND DRIVE.
I THINK THEY ARE GETTING CLOSE TO THEIR GOAL.
THIS WEEK...THE 9TH....NELLIE AND CARLYLE STENDER OF MAQUOKETA ARE
CELEBRATING THEIR 70TH ANNIVERSARY! HOW ABOUT THAT. YOU MIGHT SEND THEM A CARD % MAQUOKETA CARE CENTER, GERMAN STREET, MAQUOKETA.
LARRY HAGER, LONGTIME SIGN PAINTER IN MAQUOKETA, WILL BE 90 THE 10TH
OF JUNE. HE NOW LIVES IN A VETERANS PLACE IN MARSHALLTOWN.
THE MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL GOLF PROGRAM IS 50 YEARS OLD, ACCORDING
TO A NICE STORY IN PAPER BY JACK MARLOWE. WRESTLING COACH KAY YOUNG
STARTED THE PROGRAM AND IT HAS BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR GETTING LOTS
OF GOOD GOLFERS STARTED. TYLER STURTZ HAS THE BEST SCORE EVER BY AN MCHS TEAM PLAYER, A 33. BEST SCORE EVER CARDED IN MAQUOKETA, ON THE
OLD COURSE, WAS A 29 BY JOHN JACOBS, SR. HIS SON, JOHN JACOBS, JR., PLAYED ON MCHS GOLF TEAMS AND LIKE HIS DAD, PLAYED WELL. DICK SPECHT WAS A GOOD GOLFER AND NOW OWNS HIS OWN GOLF COURSE NEAR DUBUQUE. TWICE, THE MAQUOKETA GOLF TEAM TOOK SECOND AT STATE. JEFF REVIER WAS A LONGTIME
GOLF COACH HERE. GREAT GOLFER....NOT SURE WHERE HE LIVES NOW. WAS CLUB CHAMPION ONCE, MAYBE TWICE. GARY SEBBERT ALSO COACHED WELL FOR AROUND 10 YEARS. SORRY, DON'T KNOW WHERE ANY OF THESE FORMER COACHES
NOW LIVE. MAYBE YOU CAN HELP BY FILLING IN UNDER COMMENTS AFTER READING THIS REPORT. I NO LONGER PLAY GOLF, BUT MAY GET OUT THE CLUBS ONE OF THESE DAYS.
THERE IS A NEW 6,000 SQUARE FOOT HOME NORTH OF MAQUOKETA. NICE!
DROVE PAST IT THE OTHER DAY. VERY NICE.
NOTHING NEW ON THE WINDMILL FOR THE YMCA. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT
IT? UNDER COMMENTS BELOW, VOTE YES FOR BUILDING ONE...NO IF YOU
ARE AGAINST IT. NO NEED TO PUT IN YOUR NAME, BUT DO PUT IN MAQUOKETA, OR WHAT STATE YOU LIVE IN.
MAQUOKETA WILL HAVE A FREE FIREWORKS DISPLAY THE LAST SATURDAY NIGHT
OF THIS MONTH, AFTER THE STOCK CAR RACES, IN CELEBRATION TIMBER CITY DAYS AND THE VIETNAM WAR MEMORIAL VISIT.
TORQUE FEST IN 2012 IN MAQUOKETA, STILL A QUESTION. BUT PROMOTER
JOHN WELLS TOLD ME THIS WEEK HE IS GETTING CLOSER TO A DECISION AND
MAQUOKETA IS STILL VERY MUCH IN THE RUNNING.
THE BIG ANNUAL GARAGE SALE IS THIS WEEK AT THE FAIRGROUNDS, BY THE
HISTORICAL SOCIETY. STARTS TUESDAY AND ENDS SATURDAY. YOUR DONATIONS
WILL BE WELCOME. AND OF COURSE, THEY NEED BUYERS.....LOTS OF THEM.
THE GOVERNOR IS COMING TO MAQUOKETA THIS WEEK. MORE LATER.
THE FLY-IN BREAKFAST IS THREE WEEKS FROM TODAY AT THE AIRPORT.
THE ROTARY IS IN CHARGE THIS YEAR AND CHRIS PANKCAKES WILL BE
THE COOK. ROTARIEN WILL RENNER IS HEAD OF THE COMMITTEE.
IF YOU COME, YOU'LL GET TO SEE THE NEW PARKING LOT THERE WITH
A PAVED SIDE WALK TO THE TERMINAL DOOR.
HAVE A GOOD WEEK!!
