COOL TODAY...BUT LOOKING FORWARD TO PRETTY NICE WEATHER FOR THE WEEKEND.
I'M GOING TO OPEN THE 61 DRIVE-IN THEATRE FRIDAY NIGHT. IT WILL BE OPEN FRIDAYS AND SATURDAYS UNTIL UNTIL ABOUT MEMORIAL DAY.
IN OTHER BUSINESS NEWS: THE BAKERY IN MAQUOKETA HAS CHANGED HANDS.
CLAY AND HOLLY ROMER SOLD IT AND THE NEW OWNER WAS OPEN TODAY. BUT, NO NEWS RELEASE, SO THERE ISN'T MUCH MORE I CAN SAY AT THIS TIME. THE NEW OWNER IS A BROTHER TO TROY THEIDE AT THE DECKER HOTEL AND THIS MORNING AT COFFEE AT THE DECKER, WE HAD SOME SAMPLES OF PRODUCTS OF THE NEW BAKERY....AND EVERYONE WAS GIVING THUMBS UP.
ALSO IN BUSINESS NEWS: ROTMAN MOTOR COMPANY, OWNED BY TOM TIMMERMAN, IS THIS YEAR CELEBRATING 50 YEARS AS A MERCURY DEALER IN MAQUOKETA. CARL ROTMAN STARTED SELLING NEW CARS IN MAQUOKETA IN 1950 AND SWITCHED TO MERCURY IN 1954.
FOR A LONG TIME, THE BUSINESS WAS DOWNTOWN, JUST SOUTH OF THE DECKER HOTEL.
IT THEN WENT INTO A NEW BUILDING CARL BUILDT ON WEST PLATT STREET. HE SOLD THE BUSINESS TO TOM IN THE 90'S, BUT STILL WORKS A LITTLE FOR TOM. WHEN A BUSINESS GROWS AND GROWS ...FOR OVER 50 YEARS....ITS A GOOD BUSINESS ....THAT HAS BEEN GOOD TO ITS CUSTOMERS. TOM LEARNED FROM CARL....GOOD TEACHER. CONGRATULATIONS TO TOM AND CARL AND ALL ASSOCIATED WITH ROTMAN MOTOR COMPANY.
DOUG LARSON IS RETIRING FROM THE FARM SERVICE AGENCY IN MAQUOKETA AND IS THE MAQUOKETA ROTARY CLUB "CITIZEN OF THE WEEK". SEE A PICTURE AND STORY AT
www.maquoketa-rotary.org.
THANKS TO DEE FRANZEN OF PRESTON FOR BUYING 3 DUCKS FROM ME. DUCKS FOR THE MAQUOKETA ROTARY DUCK RACE IN JUNE. SHE NOW HAS A CHANCE TO WIN $1,000, $500 OR $250...OR ONE OF MANY OTHER PRIZES. SHE'S A READER OF THIS DAILY REPORT.
ALSO, THANKS TO ALLEN BODKIN, FORMER MAQUOKETAN, NOW LIVING IN IBERIA,
MISSOURI FOR BUYING 6 DUCKS. ALLEN, WHO READS THIS DAILY, VISITED MAQUOKETA THIS SUMMER AND STOPPED IN HERE AT KMAQ TO SAY HELLO. AND, ANOTHER GOOD READER IN PHOENIX AREA, JOHN JONES, IS BUYING A DUCK....BUT I HAVEN'T SEEN THE MONEY YET. I'M SURE ITS COMING. FELLOW ROTARIAN JACK ROSENBERG WAS IN TODAY AND BROUGHT MONEY FOR THE 86 DUCKS HE HAS ALREADY SOLD. GOOD GOING JACK.
THE JACKSON COUNTY FAIR WEB SITE IS www.maquoketa.com/jcfair
I AM STILL LOOKING FOR PICTURES TAKEN AT THE FAIR OVER THE YEARS. THIS YEAR'S FAIR IS THE 150TH.... IF YOU HAVE ONE, SCAN AND EMAIL IT TO ME. BUDDY JEWEL, COMING TO THE FAIR, HAS A HIT SONG RIGHT NOW....IN FACT....IT WENT FROM 8TH TO 3RD IN THE COUNTRY THIS PAST WEEK.
THE MAQUOKETA CAVES STATE PARK GOT A NICE WRITEUP IN THE WISCONSIN STATE JOURNAL IN MADISON RECENTLY. THANKS TO DAILY READER AND FIRST KMAQ MANAGER BOB BROWN IN FORT ATKINSON, WISCONSIN, FOR SENDING IT TO ME.
A MAQUOKETA MAN, RONNIE DUHME, 48, WAS CHARGED WITH STRIKING AN UNATTENDED VEHICLE AND LEAVING THE SCENE. THE OWNER OF THE CAR HE HIT FOLLOWED HIM AND INFORMED THE POLICE. DAMAGE TO DUHME'S CAR, $3,500 AND TO THE CAR OWNED BY JEROLD EASTERLY, $1,500.
THERESA BLAKE AND BOB JOHNSON OF MAQUOKETA ARE PARENTS OF A BOY BORN SATURDAY AT THE JACKSON COUNTY PUBLIC HOSPITAL. GRANDPARENTS ARE PAM AND RANDY GARIEN OF MAQUOKETA AND GREAT-GRANDMOTHER IS LOIS GARIEN.
KATHERINE DIETZ, AGE 88, DIED THIS MORNING AT CRESTRIDGE NURSING HOME FROM PARKINSON'S DISEASE. SHE AND HER HUSBAND OPERATED DIETZ PROCESSING PLANT IN ELWOOD AND SHE ALSO LATER WORKED AS A SECRETARY FOR KIRCHOFF'S AND RASMUSSEN'S. SHE IS SURVIVED BY 3 CHIDLREN....CHARLES DIETZ OF MAQUOKETA....ALLAN DIETZ OF DAVENPORT AND KATHY CARSTENS OF WYOMING,IOWA. ALSO 6 GRANDCHILDREN.
ONE OF THE ORIGINAL "DRIPOLATORS" GAVE A NOON HOUR PROGRAM AT THE MUSEUM TODAY AND I WAS THERE. SAW A HOME MOVIE OF THE GROUP ALSO, FILMED AROUND 1950.
GOOD PROGRAM JERRY RASMUSSEN! ONE OF THE GROUP WAS THE LATE GORDON SMITH AND HIS WIFE, PHYLISS WAS AT TODAY'S PROGRAM TOO. I KNEW GORDON WELL BECAUSE HE AND HIS DAD, LYMAN, RAN THE COAST TO COAST STORE IN MAQUOEKETA WHICH WAS LOCATED ALMOST BELOW WHERE KMAQ'S ORIGINAL STUDIOS WERE LOCATED. I SEE PHYLISS QUITE OFTEN DOWNTOWN. AND LYMAN'S SECOND WIFE IS STILL LIVING IN MAQUOKETA AND RECENTLY CELEBRATED HER 100TH BIRTHDAY. ANOTHER "DRIPOLATER" I KNEW WAS THE LATE CADY PHILIPPS, WHO WORKED AT THE POST OFFICE. OF THE GROUP OF 6, THE OTHER THREE I NEVER KNEW. ONE IS STILL LIVING.
A BUBBY ALDEN AND ANOTHER BOTH ARE DEAD.
JERRY WAS THE GUY THAT GOT THEM GOING AND WAS THE BLACK FACED EMCEE. HE
LEFT THE GROUP AFTER ABOUT 75 PERFORMANCES BECAUSE IT WAS TAKING TOO MUCH TIME FROM HIS WORK AS PART OWNER WITH DAD AND BROTHER OF RASMUSSEN MOTOR SALES, NOW BRAD DEERY MOTORS. THE "DRIPOLATORS" DID LIP-SYNC SONGS BY FAMOUS ENTERTAINERS AND HAD ZANY COSTUMES TO GO WITH THE SINGING AND ENTERTAINED FOR ABOUT 3 YEARS....AROUND 125 PERFORMANCES.
THAT'S ALL FOR TODAY...AS IT...GOING TO BE LATE FOR DINNER.

NO SUN TODAY...AND HIGH OF 63.
THE MAQUOKETA COMMUNITY SCHOOL BOARD SAYS THEY ARE NOT GOING TO OFFER SOCCER AS A COMPETITIVE SPORT AT THE HIGH SCHOOL NEXT YEAR. FOR A COUPLE YEARS, THERE HAS BEEN SOME INTEREST IN DOING SO. BOARD MEMBERS SAY THEY HAVE ALL THEY CAN HANDLE FUNDING AND KEEPING COACHES FOR THE CURRENT SPORTS. ALSO, WHETHER FALL, OR SPRING, SOCCER WOULD TAKE ATHLETES AND FANS FROM THE OTHER LONG ESTABLISHED SPORTS.
WISE THINKING I BELIEVE.
THE SCHOOL BOARD GOT A RECENT SURPRISE THAT THE DISTRICT WILL AFTER ALL, GET $240,000 FROM A HARKIN GRANT TO HELP FUND THE NEW OFFICE FOR THE MIDDLE SDHOOL, WHICH IS CURRENTLY ON THE 2ND FLOOR.
MATTHEW YAROLEM, AGE 21, OF MAQUOKETA, FACES CHARGES OF CARRYING A CONCEALED WEAPON AND ASSAULT FOLLOWING AN INCIDENT AT 6:45 THE NIGHT OF MARCH 17TH. THE POLICE ARRESTED HIM ON EAST PLATT FOR POINTING A HANDGUN AT THE HEAD OF ANOTHER PERSON. HE HAS BEEN RELEASED ON $6,500 BOND.
LATE PLEDGES FOR THE SUNSHINE RADIOTHON OF LAST SUNDAY NOW TOTAL OVER $1,000. EACH DAY MONEY COMES IN BECAUSE PEOPLE WERE NOT HOME SUNDAY AND DID NOT PLEDGE THEN, BUT STILL WANT TO.
ANYBODY REMEMBER THE DRIPOLATORS?
NO BIRTHS.
NO DEATHS.
DID YOU KNOW, IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS, 25 NEW HOMES HAVE GONE UP IN MAQUOKETA?
THERE IS A PERFECT HOME FOR YOU IF YOU WANT TO MOVE BACK TO MAQUOKETA.
I KNOW OF A COUPLE OLDER HOMES TOO THAT ARE FOR SALE...ONE JUST OVER
$250,000, A DREAM WITH LARGE YARD..ALSO A GRAND OLD HOME ON PLEASANT STREET NEAR CARSON FUNERAL HOME. NO, I AM NOT A REALTOR...JUST LOOKING TO BUILD UP THE POPULATION OF THE TOWN AND LISTENERS FOR KMAQ.
TAKE CARE.

JUST ANOTHER INSTANCE THAT TELLS YOU WHY DEER ARE A PAIN.........AROUND HERE.
A RESIDENT OF LAMOTTE, LARRY "BUCK" KOOS, A DEMOCRAT, HAS FILED HIS NOMINATIOM PAPERS FOR JACKSON COUNTY SUPERVISOR. HE WILL SEEK THE OFFICE CURRENTLY HELD BY REPUBLICAN INCUMBANT DAVE KENDALL, WHO HAS SAID HE WILL RUN AGAIN BUT HAS NOT YET FILED HIS PAPERS.

WE ARE IN THE 50'S TODAY WITH SUNSHINE, BUT COLD WEATHER IS COMING BACK TOMORROW AFTERNOON AND SUNDAY.
STATE SENATOR ROGER STEWART STOPPED IN THIS MORNING.
SAYS ADJOURMENT OF THE IOWA LEGISLATURE IS ABOUT 4 WEEKS AWAY.
HE IS HAVING A FUND RAISING EVENT APRIL 2ND AT THE NEW MOTEL HERE IN MAQUOKETA AND THE GOVENOR'S WIFE...CHRISTIE VILSACK, WILL BE THE SPECIAL GUEST. LIKE AT ALMOST ALL DEMOCRATIC FUNCTIONS, RED HENTON WILL PROVIDE THE MUSIC.
ST. REP. BOB OSTERHAUS AND I JUST CAME BACK FROM LUNCH AT THE DECKER. THEY WERE BUSY. BOB HAD A FISH SPECIAL AND SOUP AND I HAD SOUP AND A CHEESEBURGER AND BOB SAID HE HAD AN HONOR THIS WEEK AT THE HOUSE CHAMBERS.....HE WAS ASKED TO PROCEED OVER THE HOUSE FOR ABOUT AN HOUR, SITTING IN FOR THE CHAIRMAN. SAID, ALL WENT WELL AND IT WAS FUN. BOB IS IN HIS FINAL WEEKS OUT THERE, AS HE IS NOT RUNNING FOR RE-ELECTION, BUT STILL HOLDS HIS SEAT UNTIL THE END OF THE YEAR. THERE ARE MEETINGS TO ATTEND DURING THE SUMMER AND LATER IN THE YEAR. HE HAS HAD THE JOB FOR ABOUT 7 OR 8 YEARS AND HAS DONE A GOOD JOB. WIFE ANN HAS BEEN HIS ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT ALL THAT TIME AND ALSO HAS DONE WELL.
WE HAD A LITTLE DISAGREEMENT TODAY IN OUR DISCUSSION OF THE MINIMUM WAGE AND THE ISSUE OF RAISING THE MINIMUM. I BELIEVE THERE SHOULD BE TWO MINIMUMS.....FOR AGE 17 AND UNDER AND ADULTS 18 AND OVER. AND...IF WE HAD TWO TIERS...I THINK IT WOULD BE OKAY TO RAISE THE TEEN MINIMUM A LITTLE AND THE ADULT A LOT MORE. I THOUGHT I HAD A NEW IDEA ABOUT TWO MINIMUMS....BUT I READ A COUPLE WEEKS AGO THAT WISCONSIN IS GIVING THAT SOME THOUGHT AND BOB SAID HE'S HEARD DISCUSSION ALONG THOSE LINES BEFORE. BUT, FOR THIS YEAR, THE ISSUE IS DEAD IN THE IOWA LEGISLATURE.
BELLEVUE MARQUETTE WON THEIR GAME OVER #1 RATED NEWELL FONDA THIS MORNING, BY 10 POINTS, TO TAKE 3RD PLACE IN THE BOYS 1-A TOURNAMENT IN DES MOIENS. LAST YEAR, THEY TOOK 4TH.
MY SON DAVID VISITED THE OHNWARD FINE ARTS CENTER YESTERDAY AND GOT A TOUR FROM GARY DREW, AND WAS IMPRESSED WITH IT. THE 800 SEAT AUDITORIUM IS LOCATED ON EAST PLATT, WHERE THE OLD GOLF COURSE WAS YEARS AGO. IT WILL OPEN IN DECEMBER FOR ITS FIRST EVENT. DAVE TOOK SOME GOOD PICTURES AND TO SEE THEM, GO TO THE KMAQ HOME PAGE....CLICK ON TO DENNIS' DAILY PHOTOS AND TAKE A LOOK.
THE SUNSHINE PRE-SCHOOL RADIOTHON IS THIS SUNDAY FROM NOON 'TIL 6 P.M. IT WILL BE ON KMAQ-FM AND ACCESS CHANNELL 18...AND WE HAVE A BUNCH OF ENTERTAINERS LINED UP FOR THE AFTERNOON. THREE PHONES FOR PLEDGES WILL BE IN OPERATION. WE ARE STARTING ALREADY TO GET PLEDGES FROM THOSE WHO WON'T BE IN MAQUOKETA SUNDAY.
IF YOU REMEMBER SUNSHINE AND IT EFFECTED YOUR LIFE IN SOME WAY,
YOU ARE WELCOME TO MAKE A PLEDGE TOO. JUST EMAIL THE AMOUNT TO ME AND I'LL READ YOUR NAME AND PLEDGE SUNDAY AFTERNOON. EVERYONE THAT MAKES A PLEDGE WILL BE MAILED A THANK-YOU WITH INFORMATION ON WHERE TO SEND THIER CHECK. YOU WILL ALSO BE LISTED ON THE SUNSHINE WEB SITE AND ALSO WILL BE LISTED IN THE
SUNSHINE SCHOOL'S NEW BI-MONTHLY NEWSLETTER COMING OUT SOON.
MY EMAIL ADDRESS IS kmaq@kmaq.com SUNSHINE IS OWNED BY NO ONE....OWNED BY THE CITIZENS OF MAQUOKETA AND RUN BY A BOARD
OF CITIZENS. IT IS AN EXCELLENT FACILITY....ONE OF THE BEST IN THE STATE. RIGHT NOW THE PRE-SCHOOL AND DAYCARE....LOCATED IN A LARGE BEAUTIFUL BUILDING BEHIND THE JACK AND JILL STORE....HAS AN ENROLLMENT OF 140 KIDS. BUT, LIKE MOST SCHOOLS TODAY, IT NEEDS MORE FUNDS TO CONTINUE DOING THE BEST JOB POSSIBLE.
WE WOULD LIKE TO RAISE 25-50 THOUSAND DOLLARS SUNDAYS.
NO BIRTHS OR DEATHS.
HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND.

LOTS OF SNOW YESTERDAY AND LAST NIGHT IN IOWA, BUT MOST TO THE SOUTH AND WEST OF US. WE GOT ABOUT 2 INCHES AND WITH A HIGH OF 41 TODAY, IT IS ALL GONE.
LEIGHTON HEPKER BROADCAST THE NORTHEAST OF GOOSE LAKE TOURNAMENT GAME AT DES MOINES LAST NIGHT AND LEFT TO COME BACK TO MAQUOKETA AFTER THE GAME, ABOUT 10 AND DIDN'T GET HOME UNTIL AFTER 4 THIS MORNING. ROADS WERE BAD. NORTHEAST LOST THE GAME.
JEANNETTE MESSERLI OF CLINTON TELLS ME THAT THE CLASS OF 1954 OF MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL WILL HAVE ITS 50TH YEAR REUNION ON THE WEEKEND OF JULY 17TH, 2004. IT WILL START FRIDAY NIGHT, THE 16TH, WITH A PARTY AT THE COMFORT INN MOTEL AND THE CLASSES OF 53 AND 55 ARE ALSO INVITED THAT NIGHT. SO..MAKE PLANS TO BE IN MAQUOKETA THAT WEEKEND AND SEE A LOT OF PEOPLE YOU HAVEN'T SEEN FOR A LONG TIME.
HER SON TOM, IS THE MAYOR OF MAQUOKETA. IF YOU NEED HER EMAIL ADDRESS. LET ME KNOW.
A MAQUOKETA WOMAN HAD TO BE EXTRICTED FROM HER VEHICLE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AFTER HER VAN RAN A STOP SIGN AT GROVE AND MAIN AT THE SOUTH EDGE OF MAQUOKETA, BY OWL FURNITURE. ARLENE ABBOTT SMITH, AGE 66, WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL AND RELEASED. SHE PULLED OUT INTO THE INTERSECTION AND WAS STRUCK BROADSIDE BY A VEHICLE DRIVEN BY WESLEY JOHANNSEN, AGE 18, OF MAQUOKETA. SMITH WAS CHARGED AND DAMAGE TO BOTH VEHICLES CAME TO ABOUT $15,000.
THE ACCIDENT PROVES THAT IN-TOWN ACCIDENTS EVEN IN A SMALL CITY CAN BE QUITE SERIOUS.
CAROLINE KAMPAS OF CLINTON DIED SUNDAY. SHE IS SURVIVED BY SISTERS IN THE MAQUOKETA AREA....PAT WALLACE, AGNES HINZ AND MONICA IHRIG.
RYAN AND MELISSA JARGO OF CLINTON ARE PARENTS OF A BOY BORN AT OUR HOSPITAL LAST THURSDAY. GREAT-GRANDPARENTS ARE NAOMI IHRIG OF MAQUOKETA AND JOE AND EUNICE FIER OF MAQUOKETA.
COURT NEWS: DAVID STREETS, AGE 23, WAS CHARGED WITH ASSAULT AFTER A FIGHT IN A DOWNTOWN ALLEY SATURDAY AFTERNOON.
A CHAIN REACTION 3-CAR ACCIDENT LAST SATURDAY AFTERNOON. DRIVERS OF THE CARS WERE LARRY GIBSON, 48....PAMELA SCHWARTZ, AGE 16, AND PATRICIA KEITAL, AGE 50.....ALL OF MAQUOKETA AREA. NO INJURIES IN THE HIGHWAY 61 ON-RAMP ACCIDENT AND NO CHARGES FILED.
CHICAGO POLICE HAVE ARRESTED THE HUSBAND OF THE SAVANNA, ILLINOIS WOMAN WHO WAS STABBED TO DEATH IN LATE FEBRUARY IN SAVANNA.
HER HUSBAND WAS ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH THE STABBING OF HIS WIFE, WHO WAS BORN IN MAQUOKETA. SHE WAS 37. HE HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO CARROLL COUNTY.
JACKSON COUNTY SHERIFF DEPUTIES CHARGED 13 TEEN-AGERS IN A BEER PARTY NEAR ZWINGLE LAST FRIDAY NIGHT. AGES RANGED FROM 15 TO 18 AND SEVERAL WERE FROM MAQUOKETA.
THAT'S IT FOR NOW...I'M LATE FOR DINNER.
TAKE IT EASY.

BOB ANDERSEN, POLICE CHIEF THE PAST 10 YEARS IN MAQUOKETA, TOLD THE PERSONNEL COMMITTEE THIS MORNING THAT HE PLANS TO RETIRE AFTER 39 YEARS WITH THE DEPARTMENT, THIS JULY 1ST. HE HAS BEEN ON SICK LEAVE SINCE A HEART ATTACK JANUARY 25TH. HE INTENDS TO APPLY FOR A DISABILITY RETIREMENT. THE PERSONNEL COMMITTEE WILL RECOMMEND TO THE ENTIRE COUNCIL THAT HE BE PLACED ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE UNTIL HIS RETIREMENT BECOMES EFFECTIVE.
ALL OF THIS MEANS, HE WILL NOT BE RETURNING TO WORK AT ALL.

ONCE THE CITY COUNCIL GETS ANDERSEN'S LETTER OF RETIREMENT, THEY WILL BEGIN THE PROCESS OF HIRING A NEW CHIEF. UNDER CITY ORDINACE, THE CIVIL SERVICES COMISSION PLACES ADVERTISMENTS AND CONDUCTS TESTING. THE ENTEIRE COUNCIL THEN CAN EITHER RATIFY THE MAYOR'S DECISION OR VOTE IT DOWN. MAYOR MESSERLI IS A PART-TIME DISPATCHER FOR THE DEPARTMENT AND PLANS TO QUIT THAT JOB AT THE END OF MARCH SO THAT HE CAN PARTICIPATE IN THE CHIEF SELECTION WITHOUT A CONFLICT OF INTEREST.
I HAVE MORE NEWS, BUT RUNNING OUT OF TIME, SO WILL HOLD IT UNTIL TOMORROW.

PARTLY SUNNY AND 51 FOR A HIGH TODAY.
DEWITT HELD A BOND ISSUE TO BUILD A NEW HIGH SCHOOL YESTERDAY.
IT NEEDED 60% APPROVAL AND 45% VOTED FOR THE BOND ISSUE.
IN I BELIEVE A ROUTINE CHECK, A DRUG DOG FROM CLINTON COUNTY SNIFFED THROUGH LOCKERS AT THE MAQUOKETA MIDDLE SCHOOL YESTERDAY AND ACCORDING TO ASSISTANT POLICE CHIEF CRAIG JACKSON, NO DRUGS WERE FOUND. THE SEARCH WAS DONE AFTER SCHOOL WAS OUT.
DARRYL PARKER, DIRECTOR FOR THE JACKSON COUNTY CONSERVATION BOARD, SPOKE TO ROTARY TODAY AND TOLD ROTARIANS THAT THE NEW HURSTVILLE INTERPRETIVE CENTER WILL OPEN IN JULY. IT WILL HAVE THREE INSIDE MAJOR DISPLAYS AND ONE WILL BE READY AT THE OPENING AND IS BEING FUNDED BY ALLIANCE PIPELINE OF MAQUOKETA, AT A COST OF OVER $50,000. EACH OF THE 3 DISPLAYS WILL BE ABOUT 7 FEET DEEP AND 17 FEET LONG. THE CONSERVATION BOARD OFFICES FOR STAFF MEMBERS WILL MOVE THERE FROM THE BASEMENT OF THE COURTHOUSE. THE CENTER IS EXPECTED TO ATTRACT WELL OVER 100,000 VISITORS EACH YEAR, INCLUDING LOTS OF SCHOOL CHILDREN ON SCHOOL TOURS. MOST OF THE YEAR, VISITORS WILL BE ABLE TO WALK THE PATHS ON THE GROUNDS TOO.
YOU'LL BE HEARING MORE ABOUT THE $1.1 MILLION DOLLAR CENTER ON MANY FUTURE DAILY REPORTS AND NEXT TIME YOU VISIT MAQUOKETA, BE SURE TO GO OUT NORTH ON HIGHWAY 61 AND TAKE A LOOK. THERE IS ALSO A GOOD POSSIBILITY MAQUOKETA'S TOURIST INFORMATION CENTER WILL MOVE THERE, FROM ITS LOCATION NEXT TO MCDONALD'S.
NO BIRTHS OR DEATHS.
NO LOCAL SPORTS THESE DAYS.
TAKE IT EASY.

THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL MET LAST NIGHT FOR A BUDGET HEARING AND THE JACKSON COUNTY SUPERVIORS HAD THEIR BUDGET HEARING THIS MORNING.....AND BOTH BOARD WILL BE RAISING TAXES NEXT YEAR A LITTLE, BECAUSE OF STATE CUTBACKS. NO ONE SPOKE, AT EITHER HEARING, AGAINST THE RAISES.
THREE ACCIDENTS OVER THE WEEKEND IN CLINTON COUNTY AND ALL THREE DRIVERS WERE CHARGED WITH OWI.
PRESTON POLICE CHEIF CURT GRUVER, FORMER MAQUOKETA RESIDENT, GOT INVOLVED IN A CASE OF AN ASSAULT VOER DOG DOO-DOO IN MILES. GRUVER CHARGED LORAS FELTES, 48, LAST FRIDAY MORNING FOR ASSAULT. GRUVER SAID CAROL WINTER WAS WALKING HER DOG IN MILES AND FELTES ACCUSED HER OF ALLOWING HER DOG TO DO ITS
NECESSARY IN HIS YARD. SHE THEN SHOWED HIM A PLASTIC BAG OF DOG DOO-DOO SHE WAS HOLDING AND DENIED IT. THE CHEIF SAID FELTES GRABBED CAROL WINTER AROUND THE NECK AND SHOOK HER. SHE DROPPED THE BAG OF DOO-DOO AND LEFT. CHIEF GRUVER CHARGED FELTES AND FOUND THE DOG DOO-DOO BAG IN THE FELTES CAR.

WE HAD A LITTLE SUNSHINE THIS MORNING AND WE JUST HAD SOME LIGHT SNOW A FEW MINUTES AGO.
THE BELLEVUE MARQUETTE GIRLS LOST TO TRAYNOR THIS AFTERNOON AT THE GIRL'S STATE TOURNAMENT, IN THE LAST 2/10THS OF A SECOND. HERE'S HOW THE GAME ENDED UP. THE GAME WAS TIED. BELLEVUE HAD THE BALL WITH 40 SECONDS LEFT. THEY WENT DOWN COURT....SHOT AND MISSED AND TRAYNOR GOT THE REBOUND. TRAYNOR WAS WORKING TO KEEP THE BALL UNTIL TIME RAN OUT AND THEY COULD GO INTO OVERTIME. BUT THEN, WITH 2/10 OF A SECOND LEFT, UNEXPECTEDLY, A BELLEVUE GIRL FOULED TRAYNOR. TRAYNOR MISSED THE FIRST FREE THROW AND MADE THE SECOND AND THE GAME WAS OVER.
A REAL TOUGH ONE TO LOOSE....AND A HEARTBREAKER, ESPECIALLY FOR THE GIRL THAT COMMITTED THE FOUL. PERSONALLY, I'M DISAPPOINTED A REFEREE WOULD CALL A FOUL WITH LESS THAN A SECOND LEFT. I BELEIVE HE SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE TEAMS GO INTO OVERTIME. THE GOOD NEWS TO END THIS STORY IS THAT THERE WAS NOT A SENIOR ON BELLEVUE MARQUETTE'S TEAM, TO THEY HAVE A GREAT CHANCE TO GO BACK NEXT YEAR FOR A 3RD YEAR IN A ROW. LAST YEAR, THEIR FIRST VISIT, THEY ALSO LOST THE FIRST TOURNAMENT GAME AND ALSO TO TRAYNOR. IN TOURNAMENT BASKETBALL, IF YOU LOOSE THE FIRST GAME, YOU ARE OUT OF THE TOURNAMENT AND GO HOME EARLY. BUT, IF YOU WIN THE FIRST GAME, YOU GET TO PLAY TWO MORE AND SPEND MOST OF THE WEEK IN DES MOINES.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE BELLEVUE MARQUETTE GIRLS ON A GREAT SEASON.
THE BELLEVUE MARQUETTE BOYS WON THEIR GAME SATURDAY NIGHT AND FOR THE 6TH YEAR IN A ROW, WILL GO TO THE STATE TOURNAMENT. THEY
WON ON TWO FREE THROWS BY BRIAN MOORE WITH SECONDS LEFT.
THEY PLAY NEXT MONDAY. ALSO, GOING TO STATE, THE NORTHEAST BOYS OF GOOSELAKE. THEY PLAY NEXT MONDAY NIGHT. KMAQ-FM WILL BROADCAST BOTH GAMES, AS WE DID THE GIRL'S GAME TODAY.
SHORT CITY COUNCIL MEETING TONIGHT.
SHORT SCHOOL BOARD MEETING TONIGHT.
ONE DEATH, BUT OBIT NOT COMPLETE, SO WILL HOLD OFF ON IT UNTIL TOMORROW.
THE MAQUOKETA ROTARY "CITIZEN OF THE WEEK" IS MONA REICHLING. A PICTURE OF HER AND STORY IS ON THE ROTARY WEB SITE AT
www.maquoketa-rotary.org.
HAVE A GOOD WEEK.

ITS RAINING IN MAQUOKETA.
MORE RAIN TONIGHT.
THE MAQUOKETA BOYS PLAY CEDAR RAPIDS XAVIER TONIGHT AT CEDAR RAPIDS.
ITS A 3-A TEAM THAT HAS PLAYED MOST OF THEIR GAMES AGAINST 4-A SCHOOLS.
IF THE CARDINALS WIN TONIGHT, THEY PLAY NEXT MONDAY NIGHT AT DUBUQUE.
IF DEWITT WINS TONIGHT AGANST DUBUQUE WAHLERT, THEY WOULD BE
THE CARDINALS OPPONENT NEXT MONDAY NIGHT. THE GAME STARTS AT 7 TONIGHT.
LISTEN TO KMAQ-FM TONIGHT FOR THE GAME....OR, JOIN ME. I'LL BE THERE AT THE KENNEDY HIGH SCHOOL GYM TO WATCH IT.
THE PARENTS OF A CHILD WHO DIED IN A FIRE IN DELMAR LAST MONTH HAVE BEEN ARRESTED ON CHARGES OF CHILD ENDANGERMENT AND TWO FELONY CHARGES OF CHILD NEGLECT. THEIR 4-YEAR OLD DAUGHTER DIED IN THE DELMAR FIRE FEBRUARY 15TH. THE SHERIFF SAID THE GIRL DIED IN HER BEDROOM AFTER NOT BEING ABLE TO GET OUT OF THE ROOM APPARENTLY BECAUSE OF THE EXCISS DEBRIS IN THE ROOM OR THE LOCK MECHANISM ON THE DOOR. THE SHERIFF SAID THE GIRLS ROOM AND THE OTHER CHILDREN'S ROOMS HAD LOCKS INSTALLED SO THE CHILDREN COULD BE LOCKED IN THERE ROOMS.
THE VEHICLE OF THE WOMAN MURDERED LAST MONTH IN SAVANNA HAS BEEN FOUND ON A CITY STREET IN CHICAGO. BUT AUTHORITIES ARE STILL LOOKING FOR HER HUSBAND, WHO IS BELIEVED TO BE CONNECTED WITH HER MURDER.
