WE SPENT 2 OR 3 HOURS IN CHICAGO'S LOOP YESTERDAY AFTERNOON,
VISITING ONE OF NANCY'S GRANDAUGHTERS WHO HAS A SMALL 27TH FLOOR APARTMENT RIGHT IN THE HEART OF IT. NICE AFTERNOON FOR DINNER AND WALKING UP AND DOWN FAMOUS STREETS LIKE STATE AND RUSH AND MICHIGAN AVENUE. SUNNY AND WARM WEATHER AND THE LOOP WAS VERY BUSY! DITKA'S IS QUITE BIG...HAD A BEER THERE. THE APPLE STORE WAS ALSO BUSY WITH COMPUTER FANS ...AND ANOTHER INTERESTING PLACE WAS HERSHEY'S CHOCOLATE STORE. FUN TO VISIT THE WINDY CITY....ONE OF THE GREATEST CITIES OF THE WORLD AND JUST A FEW HOURS AWAY.

DID NOT GAIN ENTRY.
JUST AFTER 9:30 LAST NIGHT, MAQUOKETA POLICE RECEIVED A REPORT OF A BURGLARY. MICHELLE WILLIAMS ON NORTH DEARBORN TOLD AUTHORITIES HER HOME
HAD BEEN BROKEN INTO. THE HOME WAS RANSACKED BUT WILLIAMS WAS UNSURE
IF ANYTHING HAD BEEN TAKEN.

THE MAQUOKETA OPTIMIST CLUB HONORED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AT A DINNER
MONDAY NIGHT AT THE EAGLES CLUB. THIS HAS BEEN AN ANNUAL BANQUET.

THE MAQUOKETA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MONTHLY MEETING WAS HELD AT THE COMFORT
INN OVER THE NOON HOUR TODAY. CHAMBER PRESIDENT TOM DEVINE CONDUCTED THE MEETING AND AFTER SOME ANNOUNCEMENTS, INTRODUCED THE GUEST SPEAKER SHOWN
HERE. HE IS SCOTT BOWER, PLANT MANAGER OF THE HUSCO INTERNATIONAL
PLANT IN THE SOUTH INDUSTRIAL PARK. THE COMPANY IS MAQUOKETA'S NEWEST
INDUSTRY AND IS LOCATED IN THE LARGE GENERAC BUILDING. GENERAC STILL OWNS
THE BUILDING AND USES A PORTION OF IT FOR WAREHOUSING AND THE OTHER PART,
ABOUT 85,000 SQUARE FEET, IS LEASED TO HUSCO. HUSCO, LIKE GENERAC, IS
OUT OF SOUTHERN WISCONSIN. THEY HAVE A PLANT IN WAUKESHA AND WHITEWATER
AND ALSO ABROAD IN CHINA AND A SMALL OPERATION IN INDIA. ALSO A SALES
OFFICE IN BRAZIL. IN MAQUOKETA, THEY EMPLOY AROUND 100. THEY MANUFACTURE
HYDRAULIC CONTROL VALUES FOR TRUCKS AND TRACTORS AND ARE A BUSY, GOING
INDUSTRY. HERE IN MAQUOKETA, IN NOVEMBER, THEY WILL START UP THEIR 7TH
LINE AND WILL THEN BE AT NEAR CAPACITY IN THEIR BUILDING. BOWER'S MAIN
MESSAGE WAS HOW THE MAQUOKETA PLANT IS DEALING WITH THE PROBLEM THEY HAD
WITH EMPLOYEE TURNOVER. IT WAS AT A HIGH 78% LAST YEAR AND WITH THEIR
NEW POINT-SYSTEM, THEY HAVE REDUCED THAT TO 27% THIS YEAR, A MAJOR DROP
BUT STILL HIGHER THAN THEY WANT IT TO BE. I WON'T GO INTO MORE DETAIL
BUT ONLY WRITE THAT I WAS IMPRESSED WITH BOWER AND WHAT HIS COMPANY IS
DOING AND AM CONFIDENT WE HAVE A GOOD, GROWING INDUSTRY HERE FOR YEARS TO COME!
CLICK-ON PHOTO TO ENLARGE IT. IF IT DOES NOT ENLARGE RIGHT AWAY, MESS WITH
IT A LITTLE MORE AND THE PHOTO WILL ENLARGE. NOT SURE WHY THIS IS NOW
HAPPENING AND WILL HAVE DAVE CHECK INTO IT.

THESE "NO" SIGNS ARE ON YARDS ALL OVER TOWN. THE MESSAGE IS....
VOTE NO....NOVEMBER 8TH IN THE MAQUOKETA CITY ELECTION. A "VOTE NO"
MAJORITY WILL KEEP THE CITY COUNCIL FROM TAKING OVER DAY-TO-DAY
MANAGEMENT OF MAQUOKETA MUNICIPAL ELECTRIC LIGHT AND POWER COMPANY.
I DEFINITELY WILL VOTE "NO" AS THE CITY COUNCIL HAS ALL THEY CAN HANDLE
WITH OTHER CITY MATTERS AND SHOULD NOT TAKE ON EXTRA RESPONSIBILITIES OF
RUNNING THE LIGHT PLANT AND DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM. DO NOT VOTE "YES"...AND
WE WILL KEEP THE CURRENT MMEU BOARD. VOTE "NO"!

WINDY AND COLD TODAY....NO SUN....48 TODAY.
ANOTHER DAY OF SAME COMING AND THEN FRIDAY-SATURDAY AND SUNDAY SHOULD BE
NICE AGAIN.
DES MOINES AREA HAD SOME SNOW THIS MORNING.
JOHN PORTER, OWNER OF CAVES ROAD ANTIQUES FOR MANY YEARS, HAS DONATED HIS
ANTIQUE STORE INVENTORY TO THE JACKSON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY. SOME
OF THE ITEMS WILL GO INTO THEIR TWO MAQUOKETA MUSEUMS AND THE REST WILL
BE SOLD AT AUCTION WITH THE PROCEEDS GOING TO THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY.
JOHN'S A GOOD GUY! HE WAS MY KMAQ MORNING ANNOUNCER AND CHIEF ENGINEER
BACK IN 60'S. KMAQ-FM WENT ON THE AIR IN THE FALL OF 1967 (JUST IN
TIME FOR MHS FOOTBALL SEASON) AND JOHN HOOKED UP THAT FIRST FM TRANSMITTER. WE WERE AM-ONLY UNTIL THEN AND COULD NOT BE ON-THE-AIR
AT NIGHT, SO WHEN FM CAME, IT WAS A BIG DEAL AS WE COULD THEN BROADCAST
THE GAMES "LIVE" AT NIGHT. FM STATIONS COULD BROADCAST AT NIGHT. NO MORE TAPING THE GAME AND PLAYING IT BACK THE NEXT MORNING.
MANY OF YOU WILL REMEMBER GLEE PORTER, JOHN'S MOTHER, WHO WORKED AS A WRITER
FOR BOB MELVOLD AT THE NEWSPAPER OFFICE.
ANOTHER ANNOUNCER FROM THE PAST AT KMAQ, JIM DOYNE, WAS IN TOWN TODAY WITH
HIS WIFE OF 50 YEARS, JOYCE. NANCY AND I HAD LUNCH WITH THEM AT THE
DECKER. I HIRED JIM IN THE EARLY 60'S (HAD WORKED AT KROS IN CLINTON) AND
HE STAYED FOR NEARLY A YEAR AND THEN B.M. JACOBSON, OWNER OF KROS, CAME
TO TOWN ONE DAY AND HIRED HIM BACK. HE AND JOYCE GOT
MARRIED WHILE JIM WAS WORKING AT KMAQ AND THEY HAD THEIR FIRST UPSTAIRS APARTMENT IN THE HOUSE JUST NORTH OF THE WINCE O'CONNOR USED CAR BUILDING ON NORTH MAIN STREET IN MAQUOKETA. JIM IS RETIRED AFTER 35 YEARS WITH WMT BUT STILL DOES HIS POPULAR OLDIES SUNDAY AFTERNOON SHOW AT 600 RADIO, FROM 2 UNTIL 7 P.M. THEY HAVE 2 KIDS AND 3 GRANDKIDS. ONE OF THE 3 GRANDKIDS GRADUATES FROM IOWA NEXT YEAR AND THE OTHER TWO ARE IN HIGH SCHOOL...A JUNIOR AND A SENIOR AND THEY PLAN TO GO TO IOWA OR IOWA STATE. NICE TO TALK OVER THE OLD DAYS OF RADIO WITH JIM TODAY.
AT THE LIONS CLUB MEETING LAST THURSDAY NIGHT, VERL AND KATHY BANOWETZ
TOLD ME THEY SOLD THEIR LARGE BANOWETZ ANTIQUES BUILDING NEAR THE 61 AND 64 INTERSECTION TO MARK EDWARDS. THE SMALLER BUILDING ACROSS THE STREET WILL BE KEPT BY THEM AND THEY WILL USE IT FOR A SCALED-DOWN BANOWETZ ANTIQUES. THEY SAID MARK AND SON DUSTIN ARE GIVING SOME THOUGHT TO HAVING THEIR OWN ANTIQUE BUSINESS IN THE OLD LARGE BUILDING. WHEN I HEAR FURTHER PLANS,
I WILL LET YOU KNOW.
THANKS FOR THE VISIT.

NOT A VERY GOOD DAY TODAY, BUT GUESS THERE HAS TO BE ONE OF THESE
ONCE IN AWHILE. BESIDES, WE NEEDED MORE RAIN. 21/100 OF AN INCH
LAST NIGHT. MOSTLY CLOUDY AND COOL TODAY, HIGH LOW 60'S. THE
REST OF THE WEEK SHOULD BE PRETTY GOOD.
THE MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL BAND PARTICIPATED IN STATE COMPETITION

THIS IS FIRE PREVENTION WEEK AND THE MAQUOKETA FIRE DEPARTMENT IS
URGING FAMILIES TO PARTICIPATE IN OPERATION EDITH AGAIN AT 6 TONIGHT.
SIRENS WILL SOUND AT 6 AND FAMILIES SHOULD THEN PRACTICE EXIT DRILLS
FROM THE HOME. FIREMEN WILL DRIVE AROUND TOWN WITH FIRE TRUCKS
COUNTING HOW MANY HOMES PARTICIPATED IN OPERATION EDITH.
IN TOURNAMENT VOLLEYBALL LAST NIGHT, THE MAQUOKETA TEAM DID WELL AGAIN, BEATING ANAMOSA 2 - 0....DEFEATING VINTON 2 - 0 AND THEN MARION, 2 - 0.
THAT WAS AT CLEAR CREEK AMANA. THE CARDINAL GIRLS NOW ADVANCE TO
THE CHAMPIONSHIP BRACKET OF THE WAMAC TOURNAMENT TOMORROW NIGHT AT MARION.
IF THE CARDINALS PLAY IN THE WORLD SERIES...GAME TICKETS WILL BE AT LEAST
$200 EACH. I'LL BE LISTENING TO THE RADIO.
DUCK HUNTING STARTS THIS WEEKEND. DR. MELVIN BERNARD(RETIRED OPTOMETRIST) WILL JOIN THE HUNT, AT AGE 88. BEEN HUNTING ALL OF HIS LIFE AND ONE OF MAQUOKETA'S MOST AVID DUCK HUNTERS. THE LIMIT IS 3 DUCKS. HE CALLED OUR COFFEE GROUP TO ORDER THIS MORNING AT THE DECKER WITH HIS DUCK CALL. WE KID HIM....THE DUCKS NEVER HAVE A CHANCE WITH HIM. GREEN ISLAND, ALONG

THE NORMAL HIGH HERE AT THIS TIME OF YEAR, IS 70. TODAY, 82.
LOTS OF PREDICTIONS, THE LATEST IS THAT THE MIDWEST WILL HAVE
A MILD WINTER. ANOTHER IS THAT IT WILL BE A BAD WINTER FOR CHICAGO.
THE LAKE (AND WIND) MAKES FOR DIFFERENT CHICAGO WEATHER THAN THE REST OF THE MIDWEST.
ALSO, WE ARE NOT NOW HAVING "INDIAN SUMMER". IT DOES NOT COME UNTIL
AFTER A SHARP FREEZE, WHICH WE HAVE NOT HAD YET.
THE JACKSON COUNTY DISPOSAL AGENCY EMPLOYEES ARE ASKING FOR A 10%
WAGE INCREASE IN THE FIRST OF A PROPOSED 3 YEAR CONTRACT. THEY ARE
ASKING FOR 8% INCREASE THE SECOND YEAR AND 7% THE THIRD YEAR.
AT LEASE 60 PEOPLE SPORTING SPECIAL T-SHIRTS WALKED AROUND MAQUKETA OVER THE
NOON HOUR TODAY. THE T-SHIRTS SAID "START SOMEWHERE WALK". THE
WALK WAS PART OF THE STATE OF IOWA HEALTHIEST STATE INITIATIVE.
THE MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND WILL TAKE PART IN THE STATE MARCHING BAND COMPETITION AT KINGSTON STADIUM IN CEDAR RAPIDS, STARTING
AT 1:15 P.M. TEH BAND'S THEME IS "STAR" AND BAND DIRECTOR KENT CRAWFORD
SAYS THE BAND HAS BEEN WORKING VERY HARD AND IS READY FOR THEIR COMPETITION.
THE PAUL SAGER'S COLLECTION, ONE OF THE LARGEST AND MOST SIGNIFICANT
ARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS IN EASTERN IOWA, WILL BE SHOWCASED AT AN OPEN
HOUSE FROM 1 UNTIL 3 P.M. TOMORROW AFTERNOON IN THE OFFICE OF THE
STATE ARCHAEOLOGIST AT THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA ON CLINTON STREET IN IOWA CITY. MANY OF YOU WILL REMEMBER THE PAUL SAGER'S MUSEUM AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE MAQUOKETA CAVES STATE PARK, THAT WAS OPEN UNTIL 1988. MUCH OF WHAT
WAS LOCATED THERE WAS THEN GIVEN TO THE STATE. AN HONOR TOMORROW FOR
THE PAUL SAGERS MAQUOKETA FAMILY. MANY OF YOU KNOW BEST, HIS DAUGHTER, JO ANN (MRS.BOS) CAVIN OF MAQUOKETA.
MAQUOKETA (5 AND 1) PLAYS ANAMOSA (1 AND 5) TONIGHT FOR HOMECOMING
AT ANAMOSA. HEAR THE GAME TONIGHT AT 7:30 ON KMAQ-FM AND ON OUR
INTERNET SITE. MATT CLARK AT THE PLAY-BY-PLAY MIKE. GO CARDINALS!
I WILL HAVE THE SCORE OF THE GAME TOMORROW MORNING...RIGHT HERE.

FORREST MILLER IS BACK AT IT...GIVING WAGON RIDES AT COMMUNITY EVENTS.
I TOOK THIS PHOTO YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AT "PIONEER DAY" AT THE FAIRGROUNDS,
SPONSORED EVERY OCTOBER BY THE JACKSON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY.
IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL DAY FOR THE EVENT AND A GOOD CROWD... THAT SHOULD HAVE
BEEN LARGER. MOSTLY SENIORS....NOT ENOUGH FAMILIES! GREAT PLACE FOR
KIDS TO LEARN HOW THINGS WERE DOWN IN THE GOOD OLE DAYS. THANKS TO
BONNIE MITCHELL AND HER STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS FOR PUTTING ON ANOTHER
GREAT PIONEER DAY. THE FOOD WAS AS ALWAYS, GOOD, AND I COULDN'T BELIEVE THE BAKE SALE SELECTION....WILL BE ENJOYING THIS WEEK A PECAN PIE I
PURCHASED AND ALSO BREAD IN A JAR. WE ARE SO LUCKY IN JACKSON COUNTY
TO HAVE A VERY ACTIVE HISTORICAL SOCIETY AND NOT ONE, BUT TWO, GREAT
MUSEUMS, PLUS ONE OF THE BEST OLD FARM EQUIPMENT DISPLAYS IN THE
COUNTRY, IN A SPECIAL, SEPARATE BUILDING AT THE FAIRGROUNDS.

ANAMOSA HELD IT'S ANNUAL "PUMPKINFEST" YESTERDAY IN DOWNTOWN ANAMOSA AND
NANCY AND I GOT THERE IN TIME FOR THE 2 P.M. PARADE. A BEAUTIFUL DAY AND
THERE WAS A VERY BIG CROWD. FOUR BLOCKS OF MAIN STREET WERE BLOCKED-OFF AND THERE WERE FOOD STANDS AND CRAFT STANDS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE STREET. THE BIGGEST PUMPKIN CONTEST WEIGH-IN WAS HELD IN THE MORNING IN THE COMMUNITY CENTER DOWNTOWN AND ALL 33 ENTRIES WERE ON DISPLAY THERE.
THE BIGGEST PUMPKIN WAS IN THE PARADE AND I GOT THE PHOTO OF IT FOR THIS DAILY REPORT AFTER THE PARADE. THE PARADE LASTED JUST UNDER AN HOUR
AND FEATURED THREE BANDS, THE ANAMOSA HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL BANDS,
AND THE MAQUOKETA MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND DIRECTED BY JAY KAHN. THEY LOOKED
AND SOUNDED GOOD AS ALWAYS AND GOT APPLAUS AS THEY MARCHED IN THE PARADE.
AGAIN THIS YEAR, THE EVENT WAS AGAIN THIS YEAR ADVERTISED ALL WEEK ON KMAQ AM AND FM AND WE SAW QUITE A FEW JACKSON COUNTY PEOPLE THERE.
HOPE YOU CAN ATTEND NEXT YEAR.
AS ALWAYS, CLICK-ON THE PHOTOS TO ENLARGE THEM.
