WE GOT A LITTLE RAIN THIS MORNING. BUT, SUN CAME OUT AFTER AND WE HAVE HAD ANOTHER PRETTY NICE DAY, COOLER THAN THE LAST FEW, BUT STILL ABOVE NORMAL IN THE MID 70'S.

BEFORE I FORGET, JACK AND MARILYN WILLEY CELEBRATE THEIR 40TH THIS SUNDAY.
CONGRATULATIONS!

MAQUOKETA COMMUNITY SCHOOLS WILL BE TACKLING RECYCLING STARTING
NEXT MONTH. DURING MONDAY NIGHT'S BOARD MEETING, JERRY NELSON, DIRECTOR OF SUPPORT SERVICES FOR THE DISTRICT, SAID THEY HAVE PURCHASED SOME RECYCLABLE CONTAINERS AND WILL PUT THEM AT VARIOUS DISTRICT BUILDINGS. THIS ISSUE WAS PROMPTED WHEN THE COST INCREASED BY THE DISTRICT'S TRASH HAULER. THE HAULER SAID A LOT OF RECYCLABLES WERE
TOSSED IN THE GARBAGE. SO FAR, KATHY McCAULLEY'S CLASS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL HAS TAKEN THE LEAD ON THE RECYCLING PROGRAM.

TALKED TO TWO FORMER MAQUOKETA CLOTHIERS THIS PAST WEEKEND.......ONE IN TOWN FOR A WEDDING AND THE OTHER FOR THE MHS CLASS OF 1953 REUNION. JIM DAVIS WAS HERE FOR THE CLASS REUNION. HE WORKED FOR HIS DAD FRANKLIN, FROM MID 50'S UNTIL MOVING TO ANOTHER JOB AND STATE IN 1963. DAVIS MEN'S WEAR WAS WHERE THE BURNED-OUT HALLMARK CARD STORE WAS AND IN THE 70'S, FRANKLIN SOLD THE STORE TO ORLA DAVIS (NO RELATION) AND DAVIS CLOTHEIRS WAS IN BUSINESS UNTIL AROUND 1980. ORLA AND I SERVED ON THE CHAMBER BOARD TOGETHER FOR A FEW YEARS IN THE 70'S. HE IS RETIRED AND
HE AND COLLEEN LIVE IN TAMA. NOT SURE WHERE JIM, ALSO RETIRED, LIVES NOW. GOOD SEEING BOTH. ORLA WAS HERE FOR THE JESSE (ART) WING-ASHLEY LECHTENBERG WEDDING, WHICH NANCY AND I HAD THE PLEASURE OF ATTENDING. AFTER THE METHODIST CHURCH VOWS....THE RECEPTION WAS OUT IN THE COUNTRY, RURAL BALDWIN, IN A LARGE WHITE TENT NEXT TO A POND, AND FEATURED A SURPRISE AFTER DINNER FIREWORKS DISPLAY. ORLA AND
COLLEEN ARE GRANDPARENTS OF ASHLEY. BEAUTIFUL WEDDING! AND LUCKILY THEY HAD GREAT WEATHER FOR IT. JESSE'S FATHER, DR. JOE, IS RESTORING
AN 1869 STONE HOME OUT THERE. WAS A STAGECOACH STOP IN THE DAYS OF THE OLD WEST. PROJECT NOW IS KIND OF A LABOR OF LOVE, AS HE HAS BEEN AT THE RESTORATION FOR YEARS WITH LOTS STILL TO DO. THE NEW COUPLE IS LIVING IN MAQUOKETA.

JACKSON COUNTY SHERIFF RUSS KETTMANN SAID TELEMARKETERS WILL HAVE ACCESS TO YOU CELL PHONE NUMBERS BEGINNING THURSDAY. THERE IS A NATIONAL DO NOT CALL REGISTRY FOR CELL PHONE NUMBERS. THE SHERIFF SAID HE TRIED IT AND IT IS NOT COMPLICATED. CALL 1-888-382-1222 FROM YOUR CELL PHONE. YOU NEED TO KNOW YOUR CELL PHONE NUMBER WHEN YOU CALL AND ENTER IT WHEN ASKED TO. IT TAKES JUST A COUPLE MINUTES AND IT WILL BLOCK YOUR CELL PHONE NUMBER FROM TELEMARKETERS FOR 5 YEARS. REMEMBER, YOU MUST CALL FROM THE CELL PHONE YOU WANT TO H AVE BLOCKED.
AND IF YOU DON'T DO THIS, AND GET TELEMARKETING CALLS, REMEMBER YOU WILL BE CHARGED ON YOUR BILL FOR THE INCOMING CALL.

THE VOY 1 THEATRE HAS THE NEW MOVIE "EAGLE EYE" STARTING FRIDAY.
IT IS EXPECTED TO BE A BIG HIT, RATED PG-13. SEEN A MOVIE LATELY?
GET AWAY FROM THAT TV SCREEN ONCE IN AWHILE. FEEL LIKE A TEEN AGAIN AND TAKE IN A MOVIE! AND DON'T FORGET TO ENJOY SOME THEATRE POPCORN WITH IT. NO POPCORN TASTES BETTER THAN THEATRE POPCORN.
WE LIKE TO SELL IT, EVEN THOUGH THERE IS LITTLE PROFIT IN IT.

CHECK THE BIG-FISH PHOTO BELOW.....AND HAVE A GOOD WEDNESDAY NIGHT
AND THURSDAY.

HERE AGAIN IS KEN LITTERER OF RURAL MAQUOKETA. I HAD A PHOTO OF HIM HERE A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO WITH THE RADIO HE WON AT KMAQ. I TOLD YOU HE HAD JUST RETURNED FROM A FISHING TRIP. HERE'S PROOF! HE CAUGHT THIS

THE MAQUOKETA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SEPTEMBER MEETING WAS HELD
AT NOON TODAY AT THE MAQUOKETA COUNTRY CLUB. STANDING TO THE LEFT, STACY DRISCOLL, DIRECTOR OF THE MAQUOKETA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND
ECONOMIC DIRECTOR FOR THE CITY OF MAQUOKETA. HER SALARY IS ABOUT SPLIT BETWEEN THE CITY AND CHAMBER. TO THE RIGHT, MAQUOKETA CITY MANAGER BRIAN WAGNER. BOTH LOOK PRETTY SERIOUS IN THIS PHOTO. NOTE IN BLUE,
CITY COUNCIL WOMAN, MARGO SHOUSE SITTING AT TABLE WITH SENATOR ROGER STEWART. WE ALL NEW THE CITY MANAGER WOULD TALK ABOUT THE FIRE DEBRIS DOWNTOWN AND FOR THAT REASON, I THOUGHT THE CROWD WOULD BE BIGGER THAN IT WAS. ANYWAY, BEING THE OWNER OF TWO GOOD SIZE BUILDINGS DOWNTOWN, I WASN'T GOING TO MISS THE MEETING. I'M CERTAINLY CONCERNED ABOUT THE FUTURE OF DOWNTOWN. SO, I TOOK MY LITTLE DIGITAL CAMERA,
HITCHED A RIDE WITH LEIGHTON HEPKER (PICKED UP JAKE BICKFORD ON THE WAY) AND FIRST ENJOYED A DELICIOUS PORK LOIN DINNER. THEN THE MEETING AND
THE STORY ABOUT IT IS IN TODAY'S "DAILY REPORT" BELOW. REMEMBER...CLICK ONCE ON PHOTO TO ENLARGE IT....OR TWICE TO ENLARGE IT MORE.
THANKS FOR THE VISIT.
DENNIS VOY
ANOTHER HOT DAY IN MAQUOKETA.....LOW 80'S....A DOZEN DEGREES OVER NORMAL
FOR THIS TIME OF THE YEAR.

THE MAQUOKETA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MONTHLY MEETING WAS HELD AT NOON TODAY AT THE MAQUOKETA COUNTRY CLUB. CITY MANAGER BRIAN WAGNER
WAS THE GUEST SPEAKER. MOST OF HIS REMARKS WERE ABOUT THE FIRE
MESS DOWNTOWN. MUCH OF WHAT HE TALKED ABOUT HAS BEEN MENTIONED AT CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS. NO STUDY HAS BEEN DONE TO DETERMINE IF THERE REALLY IS AN ASBESTOS PROBLEM. I HEARD WEEKS AGO THAT STUDY WOULD COST ABOUT $8,000 AND THAT THE CITY HAD NO FUNDS FOR THAT. STACY DRISCOLL, CHAMBER DIRECTOR, WHO JOINED IN ON TODAY'S PROGRAM WITH BRIAN, SAID THE ESTIMATED COST FOR A STUDY WOULD BE IN EXCESS OF $30,000. IT WAS POINTED OUT THAT THERE WAS NO ASBESTOS FOUND IN THAT 15 PERCENT OF THE RUINS CLEARED AWAY AT THE SOUTH EDGE OF THE "SMILES ON MAIN" DENTAL BUILDING, SO THAT WORK COULD BE DONE ON A NEW WALL FOR IT. THERE, THE TESTING WAS DONE AS DEBRIS WAS BEING CLEARED AWAY. IF A LOAD TESTED FOR NO ASBESTOS, IT WAS HAULED AWAY TO AN ORDINARY DUMP SITE. IF THE LOAD HAD SOME ASBESTOS, IT WAS TO BE HAULED TO A SPECIAL SITE FOR ASBESTOS. AS IT TURNED OUT, THERE WAS NO CONTAMINATION IN THAT AREA. WOULD THE OTHER 85% TURN OUT THE SAME? BEST GUESS IS, PROBABLY NOT. AND THE CITY MANAGER SAID HE HAS BEEN TOLD BY THE DNR THAT IF THERE IS ANY ASBESTOS FOUND, THE ENTIRE DEBRIS WOULD HAVE TO BE HAULED AWAY TO A SPECIAL SITE, AT THE ESTMATED COST OF $500,000-PLUS. SO, THE FEELING IS, WHY WASTE THE $30,000 FOR TESTING. ASBESTOS WILL SURELY BE FOUND SOMEWHERE IN THE RUINS! AS I SEE IT, THE ONLY ANSWER.....COME UP WITH THE HALF-MILLION DOLLARS AND HAUL IT ALL AWAY. SOON! INITIALLY, THERE WERE 5 BUILDINGS WITH THE PROBLEM. NOW THERE ARE 3. DR. ATIENZA HAS GONE AHEAD AND SOLVED HIS PROBLEM. THE CORNER BUILDING IS APPARENTLY NO LONGER AN ISSUE AS THE SUB RESTAURANT OWNERS HAVE, OR ARE ABOUT TO, SELL THEIR BUILDING FOR A NEW BUSINESS. SO THAT LEAVES THE HALLMARK, FLOOR COVERING AND FURNITURE BUILDINGS WITH THE PROBLEM. BREITBACH'S HAVE ALREADY INDICATED THEY WOULD GIVE THEIR BUILDING TO THE CITY AT NO COST. I WOULD ASSUME THE OTHER TWO WOULD DO THE SAME. SO, AFTER THE $500,000 CLEAN-UP, THE CITY WOULD OWN A LARGE LOT IN DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA'S MAIN BLOCK. IT MIGHT BE A GREEN SPACE FOR QUITE AWHILE BEFORE BEING SOLD BY THE CITY. BUT CERTAINLY BETTER THAN A BLACK SPACE FOR MAYBE MANY, MANY MORE MONTHS. MY IDEA IN THE SEPTEMBER 5THE DAILY REPORT WAS FOR THE CITY TO COME UP WITH HALF, AND DONATIONS (BY ANY BUSINESS, CLUB, CITIZEN) THE OTHER HALF. THESE DONORS WOULD PROBABLY NEVER GET THEIR MONEY BACK, BUT THE CITY MIGHT EVENTUALLY GET THEIR $250,000 BACK. IT IS TIME TO TURN IN THE SONG BOOKS AND PASS THE PLATE.

AND WHAT ABOUT THE CORNER BUILDING IF IT GETS OPEN? MIGHT BE A PLUS, AND NO PROBLEM IN THE FUTURE OF THAT AREA. BUT IF IT WOULD NOT FIT IN WITH A DEVELOPER'S PLAN TO THE NORTH, THE DEVELOPER WOULD JUST HAVE TO TRY TO BUY THE BUILDING. IN ANY CASE, I WOULD HOPE SOME DAY THE NEW OWNER WOULD TAKE OFF THE METAL SLANTED ROOF ON THE BUILDING, AND
RESTORE THE ROOF TO THE ORIGINAL APPEARANCE. IT REALLY LOOKS ODD NOW.

AND WHAT ABOUT A "STREET SCAPE" PROJECT FOR DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA.
THE CITY MANAGER TODAY TALKED A LITTLE ABOUT IT AND PASSED AROUND
SOME DRAWINGS ON HOW IT WOULD LOOK. LIKE IN MANY OTHER COMMUNITIES
THAT HAVE DONE THIS (ESPECIALLY DEWITT), THE "LOOK" IS GREAT!
WAGNER SAID ESTIMATED COSTS ARE IN THE MILLIONS. GOOD IDEA FOR THE FUTURE, (AND THERE IS SOME FUNDING FOR A PROJECT LIKE T HIS) BUT NO NEED
TO DO MUCH THINKING ABOUT IT UNTIL THE FIRE MESS IS GONE, GONE, GONE.

WHAT ABOUT THE OLD CITY POOL? THE CITY MANAGER ALSO BROUGHT IT UP IN HIS NOON TALK TO THE CHAMBER. SINCE I HAVE LISTENED TO ALL THE ANGLES, THE PLUS AND MINUS POINTS, THE COMMON SENSE ANSWER! BULLDOZE IT IN! CONVERT THE LAND INTO A PARKING LOT FOR THE NEARBY CITY BUILDING AND GOODENOW FOOTBALL FIELD, AND PUT THE IDEA OF AN OUTDOOR POOL ON HOLD FOR A FEW YEARS WHILE CITIZENS ENJOY THE NEW INDOOR POOL.

ONE MORE THING BROUGHT UP AT THE MEETING TODAY. CHAMBER DIRECTOR DRISCOLL SAID THE CHAMBER IS SEEKING INPUT FROM CITIZENS ABOUT NEXT YEAR'S (2009) HALLOWEEN TRICK OR TREAT DAY AND HOURS. I GUESS YOU ALREADY KNOW MY FEELINGS......IT SHOULD BE ON HALLOWEEN DAY, REGARDLESS OF THE DAY OF THE WEEK AND FROM 5 TO 7 P.M. THIS YEAR, IT WILL BE THE LATE SUNDAY AFTERNOON OF OCTOBER 26TH. THIS YEAR, ON OCTOBER 31ST, DESPITE ALL THE HYPE IN STORES, ETC...THE MAQUOKETA KIDS WILL JUST HAVE TO PRETEND THERE IS NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT OCTOBER 31.

SORRY TO RAMBLE...AND I KNOW MANY OF YOU DISAGREE ON ISSUES MENTIONED TODAY! IS THIS CALLED THOUGHT PROVOKING? ANYWAY, I'LL TRY NOT DO THIS AGAIN FOR A LONG TIME. ONE FURTHER NOTE. THE MAJORITY OF THE READERS OF THIS REPORT LIVE OUTSIDE MAQUOKETA NOW, BUT I ALSO KNOW THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE RIGHT HERE IN TOWN THAT CHECK IN DAILY.

NOW...TO NEWS FOR TODAY'S DAILY REPORT:

WE ARE HAVING GREAT WEATHER IN MAQUOKETA. ALL WEEK LONG!
AND THE WEEKEND SHOULD ALSO BE GOOD.

THE MAQUOKETA CARDINALS PLAY AT VAN HORNE AGAINST BENTON COMMUNITY TONIGHT. WON'T BE EASY! WE'LL HAVE IT ON KMAQ AT 7:30. IT IS A LONG DRIVE FOR FANS.

HAVE HAD BLOGGER PROBLEMS THIS WEEK AGAIN, HENCE NO DAILY REPORT SINCE
TUESDAY.

THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL HAS HIRED THEIR ENGINEERING FIRM TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE INTERSECTION OF MAIN AND SUMMIT, A HEAVY TRAFFIC AREA.
IT IS BAD, BUT THE WAIT IS NO LONGER THAN BIG CITY INTERSECTIONS. AND MANY LIKE ME AVOID THE INTERSECTION AND USE AN EASY ALTERNATE.
IT IS GOING TO COST AROUND $10,000 FOR THE STUDY. I THINK THAT MONEY MIGHT INSTEAD BE PUT IN A FIRE CLEAN-UP FUND. BUT, THE COUNCIL
DOESN'T WANT TO SPEND A PENNY ON THAT "ECONOMIC DEVELOPENT" PROBLEM.
IN A RELATED ISSUE, THE CITY ENGINEER JULIE NEBEL SAID HER FIRM HAS PROVIDED INFORMATION CONCERNING PUTTING IN SIGNALS AT PLATT AND WESTGATE TO THE IOWA D.O.T AND ARE AWAITING WORD ON WHETHER A GRANT WILL BE ISSUED FOR THE TRAFFIC LIGHTS. AGAIN, IT IS NOT BUSY ALL THE TIME AT THE INTERSECTION , BUT THERE ARE TIMES DURING THE WEEK WHEN IT IS NOT EASY GET ON TO MAIN TO THE LEFT.
GETTING BACK TO THE FIRE MESS! CITY MANAGER BRIAN WAGNER TOLD THE
COUNCIL THIS WEEK THAT THE CITY IS NOT GOING TO PAY FOR A FENCE AROUND THE DEBRIS. HE SAID HIS PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR DAVE POPP HAS GOTTEN QUOTES ON A FENCE, BUT THE FENCE WOULD BE PAID FOR BY THE PROPERTY OWNERS AND DONATIONS WHICH ARE IN THE MAQUOKETA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ACCOUNT. HE SAID HE WANTED TO CLARIFY TO THE COUNCIL THAT THE FIRE DEBRIS PROPERTY IS PRIVATE AND NOT OWNED BY THE CITY. COUNCILMAN NEIL MORHEAD SAID HE FOUND A STATE FUND WHICH MIGHT HAVE SOME FUNDING FOR THE CLEAN-UP, BUT NOT ENOUGH FOR THE ESTIMATED HALF-MILLION OR MORE NEEDED TO DO THE JOB. MAYBE THE COUNCIL SHOULD BUY A LOTTERY TICKET TWICE A WEEK. THE JACKPOT THIS WEEK IS OVER A HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS.

IN THE GOOD NEWS DEPARTMENT: THE GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY WAS THIS AFTERNOON FOR THE CLINTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE MAQUOKETA CENTER.
I ATTENDED THE 30-MINUTE EVENT, ATTENDED BY AROUND 35 PEOPLE.
I TOOK SOME PHOTOS, AND WILL TRY TO GET THEM UP ON THIS REPORT.
GRADING OF THE LAND JUST EAST OF THE HIGH SCHOOL STARTED THIS
PAST MONDAY, SO THE PROJECT GOT UNDERWAY A LITTLE AHEAD OF TODAY'S
CEREMONY. THE NEW BUILDING WITH CLASSROOMS, OFFICES AND A COMMUNITY ROOM WILL BE READY TO MOVE INTO NEXT SUMMER. GOING TO BE A GREAT ADDITION TO MAQUOKETA'S EDUCATION SYSTEM......THANKS TO THE LATE BANKER FROM MAQUOKETA, JOHN FAGERLAND (LONGTIME TRUSTEE FOR THE COLLEGE DISTRICT) WHO GAVE THE SEED MONEY ($250,000) FOR THE BUILDING. HIS WIFE EVELYN PRESENTED THE CHECK TO THE COLLEGE CHANCELLOR DR. PAT KEIR DURING THIS AFTERNOON'S CEREMONY.

THE MAQUOKETA CITY COUNCIL SET SUNDAY AFTERNOON, OCTOBER 26TH AS THE OFFICIAL TRICK OR TREAT TIME IN MAQUOKETA. BUT IT WAS NOT A UNANIMOUS VOTE. COUNCIL MEMBER MARSHA MEYERS SAID KIDS SHOULD BE ABLE TO TRICK OR TREAT ON HALLOWEEN, OCTOBER 31ST. I AGREE!! AND, I'LL ADD, AT NIGHT AND NOT DURING (NON-SPOOKY) DAYTIME HOURS!!

MORE GOOD NEWS! MCHS GRAD ADAM HEPKER (SON OF LEIGHTON AND CINDY)
WILL BE A PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL PLAYER. ADAM, WHO GRADUATED AS A THREE-TIME ALL-AMERICAN FROM MIDAMERICA NAZARENE UNIVERSITY IN OLATHE,KANSAS, WILL PLAY FOR THE KANSAS CITY SPARTANS IN THE AMERICAN
BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION. THE KC TEAM IS A NEWLY FORMED TEAM FOR THE 2008-2009 SEASON. ADAM WAS INVITED TO TAKE PART IN TWO TRY-OUT CAMPS AND WAS SELECTED EARLIER THIS WEEK. HE WILL BEGIN WORKOUTS EARLY NEXT MONTH AND THE FIRST OF 30-GAMES WILL BE IN DECEMBER. OTHER TEAMS IN THE ABA ARE LOCATED IN ST. LOUIS, DETROIT, CLEVELAND AND NASHVILLE.
HIS WIFE (THEY WERE MARRIED THIS PAST JUNE) IS A TEACHER IN THE KC
AREA. CONGRATULATIONS TO ADAM!

THE JACKSON COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS LEARNED THIS WEEK THAT
WOOD MANUFACURING COMPANY THAT WAS INTERESTED IN THE COUNTY'S S & H BUILDING IN THE INDUSTRIAL PARK, DECLINED THE SUPERVISOR'S COUNTER OFFER TO BUY THE BUILDING. THE COMPANY HAD OFFERED $300,000 FOR THE BUILDING WITH A GUARANTEE OF 20 TO 25 JOBS WITH WAGES OF 11 TO 14 DOLLARS AN HOUR.
SUPERVISORS COUNTERED WITH $500,000 FOR THE BUILDING AND WAGES OF $12.50 TO $15.00 AN HOUR. AGAIN, NO REPLY TO THE COUNTER OFFER AND THE SUPERVISORS SAID THEY WOULD NOT CONTACT THE COMPANY AGAIN.

NOTHING NEW OR OFFICIAL ON THE POOL HALL FOR DOWNTOWN MAQUOKETA.
ANOTHER INSPECTION WAS DONE THIS WEEK THOUGH AND DAVE WIERSMA (WHO IS BUYING THE BUILDING TO OPEN THE BUSINESS) AGREED TO BRACE A BURNED CEILING BEAM ON THE MAIN FLOOR. WIERSMA SAID THE ENGINEERS SAY THE NORTH WALL WHICH WAS EXPOSED TO THE FIRE IS STRUCTURALLY SOUND. WIERSMA HAS LEARNED THAT THE BUILDING WAS CONSTRUCTED AS A FREE STANDING FACILITY IN 1873 BY J.E. SQUIERS. STILL NEEDED BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH THE BUSINESS IS APPROVAL BY THE FIRE MARSHALL.

MAQUOKETA HAS ANOTHER NEW POLICE OFFICER, A DELMAR NATIVE, MIKE OWEN, AGE 33. HE WILL ATTEND THE LAW ENFORCEMENT ACADEMY IN JANUARY. HE AND HIS WIFE TERRA HAVE TWO DAUGHTERS. HE REPLACES BILL COAKLEY WHO RESIGNED TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL. OWEN OWNED HIS ON CONSTRUCTION BUSINESS FOR THE PAST 8 YEARS. HE IS THE SECOND NEW POLICE OFFICER. CHAD WEIPERT IS CURRENTLY ATTENDING THE ACADEMY.

HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND.

NICE DAY TODAY...SUNNY , BREEZY AND IN 70'S.

ANNE HAWKS WON RE-ELECTION TO THE MAQUOKETA SCHOOL BOARD
YESTERDAY, BY A SMALL MARGIN OF 83 VOTES OVER GEORGE HOUSTON. OVER 700 WENT TO THE POLLS AND OVER 300 VOTED ABSENTEE.

THE JACKSON COUNTY SUPERVISORS RECEIVED AN OFFER FOR THE S & H BUILDING IN THE INDUSTRIAL PARK, THAT WAS GIVEN TO THEM OVER A YEAR AGO. THEY DID NOT LIKE THE OFFER FROM A MANUFACTURING COMPANY THAT PRODUCES PRODUCTS FOR THE HOME AND WILL ANSWER THE OFFER WITH THEIR REQUIREMENTS. THE COMPANY WOULD GUARANTEE 20-25 JOBS.

THE LONE BUILDING LEFT STANDING IN AT THE SOUTH END OF MAIN STREET IN MAQUOKETA FOLLOWING LAST JANUARY'S BIG FIRE, MAY SOON BE THE SIGHT
OF A NEW BUSINESS, A FAMILY POOL HALL. DAVE WIERSMA OF MAQUOKETA,
WHO ALSO OWNS THE "GOT HER DOWN" DETAILING BUSINESS ON EAST PLATT,
HAS PURCHASED THE BUILDING THAT JUST BEFORE THE FIRE WAS TO BE A
PICKLE BARRELL SUBS RESTAURANT. BUT, THE STATE FIRE MARSHALL WAS AT THE BUILDING TODAY AND HAS ORDERED WIERSMA TO BRING THE BUILDING UP TO THE 2006 STATE FIRE CODE BEFORE HE OPENS THE BUSINESS.

FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH IN MAQUOKETA HAS HIRED A NEW DIRECTOR OF HIGH SCHOOL MINISTRIES, A PARTTIME POSITION AND SHARING ARRANGEMENT WITH CAMP SHALOM NEAR MAQUOKETA. SHE WILL WORK 12 TO 15 HOURS A WEEK AT FIRST LUTHERAN AND THE REST OF THE WEEK AT THE CAMP. SHE IS MAGGIE ATKINSON, A NATIVE OF DAVENPORT. PREVIOUSLY, MARIE STERN HELD THE JOBG AT BOTH SITES. SHE LEFT IN AUGUST OF 2006 AND THE POSITION AT FIRST LUTHERAN HAS BEEN VACANT SINCE THEN.

THANKS FOR CHECKING IN.

COLD AND WET TODAY(THURSDAY)

NOTE: THIS REPORT DID NOT GO UP AS IT WAS SUPPOSED TO THURSDAY AFTERNOON...SO HOPEFULLY IT WILL GO UP SOMETIME TODAY, FRIDAY.

NOT VERY NICE WEATHER FOR THE FIREMEN'S CONVENTION, BUT WE NEEDED SOME RAIN AND THE NEXT COUPLE DAYS WILL BE MUCH BETTER.....
SHOULD HAVE SUNSHINE BOTH TOMORROW AND SATURDAY AND IN THE 70'S.

GROUNDBREAKING WILL BE SCHEDULED IN THE NEXT COUPLE WEEKS FOR A SATELLITE CAMPUS IN MAQUOKETA FOR CLINTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE.
KAREN VICKER, THE COLLEGE PRESIDENT, SAID THEY ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO THE BUILDING BEING COMPLETED A YEAR FROM NOW. IT WILL BE CONSTRUCTED ON LAND AT THE CORNER OF SOUTH FIFTH STREET AND WASHINGTON STREET,
AT THE EDGE OF THE HIGH SCHOOL. THE SCHOOL DISTRICT SOLD THE COLLEGE THE LAND FOR $1.00. A CONTRACT HAS BEEN AWARDED TO THE LOW BIDDER, PORTZEN CONSTRUCTION OF DUBUQUE, FOR $1.7 MILLION. THE 11,000 SQUARE FOOT BUILDING WILL HAVE SEVERAL CLASSROOMS, COMPUTER LABS, AND A CAREER TECHNOLOGY LAB AS WELL AS A COMMUNITY ROOM. FUNDING WILL COME FROM THE PASSAGE OF A REFERENDUM LAST FALL WHICH INCLUDED THE MAQUOKETA BUILDING AND SEVERAL OTHER COLLEGE PROJECTS. ALSO, THE LATE JOHN FAGERLAND OF MAQUOKETA, WHO WAS A LONGTIME COLLEGE BOARD MEMBER, DONATED $250,000 TOWARD THE MAQUOKETA SATELLITE CAMPUS.

NO ONE FROM THE PUBLIC ATTENDED A HEARING THIS WEEK OF THE PLANNING AND ZONING COMMISSION ABOUT REZONING SOME PROPERTY ON WESTERN AVENUE. THE ZONING COMMISSION UNAMIOUSLY APPROVED A REQUEST FROM DUANE STICKLEY TO REZONE THE PROPERTY AT 113 WESTERN AVENUE FROM RESIDENTIAL TO BUSINESS. STICKLEY AND HIS FATHER, GALE, HAVE BEEN OPERATING THEIR ELECTRIC BUSINESS FROM THE SITE FOR ALMOST 50 YEARS.
PART OF THE PROPERTY IS ZONED RESIDENTIAL AND PART BUSINESS.
STICKLEY SAID HE PLANS TO DEMOLISH THE HOUSE ON THE PROPERTY AND BUILD A 35 BY 80-FOOT STORAGE BUILDING.

YES..THE PICTURE OF THE MOST POPULAR MAQUOKETA RESTAURANT (ON THIS REPORT EARLIER THIS WEEK) WAS OF BLUFF LAKE CATFISH FARM NORTHWEST OF MAQUOKETA, JUST BEYOND THE CAVES STATE PARK. HAD LOTS OF EMAILS AND ALL GUESSED IT. IT HAS NO SIGN ON BUILDING. LATELY, SATURDAY NIGHT
CUSTOMERS HAVE HAD TO WAIT AT LEAST 90-MINUTES TO GET SEATED.
IT WAS FEATURED BY BILL WUNDRUM IN THE QUAD CITY TIMES EARLIER THIS SUMMER. IT IS OPEN THURSDAY THRU SUNDAY.

MAQUOKETA HOSTS WAUKON IN FOOTBALL TOMORROW NIGHT AT GOODENOW
FIELD.

SOMEONE IS CLEANING OUT THE BUILDING ON SOUTH MAIN THAT WAS SAVED IN THE JANUARY BIG FIRE. WHERE THE SUB SANDWICH SHOP WAS PLANNING TO OPEN. WHAT KIND OF BUSINESS WILL LOCATE THERE? I'LL LET YOU KNOW WHEN I FIND OUT. APPARENTLY IT WILL NOT BE A RESTAURANT.

CHRISTOPHER AND JENNIE WEIS OF IOWA CITY ARE PARENTS OF A BOY.
GRANDPARENTS ARE ARDELL AND DEBBIE WEIS OF BELLEVUE AND GREAT GRANDPARENTS ARE ELDON AND IRENE WALLER OF BELLEVUE AND GRETRUDE DAEHLER OF MAQUOKETA.

YESTERDAY MORNING AT 3 A.M......THE JACKSON COUNTY DISPATCH CENTER RECEIVED THE REPORT OF A FIRE AT 7501 214TH AVE, JUST NORTH OF MAQUOKETA.

THE STATE FIRE MARSHALL'S OFFICE WAS CALLED AND THE FIRE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

NOTE: THIS BEING ADDED FRIDAY MORNING. SUNSHINE IN MAQUOKETA FRIDAY MORNING. THE QUAD CITY TIMES HAS A NICE ARTICLE ABOUT KMAQ THIS
(FRIDAY) MORNING, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BUSINESS PAGE. A NEAT WIDE-ANGLE

IT HAS BEEN COOL AND CLOUDY TODAY IN MAQUOKETA, QUITE A CHANGE FROM YESTERDAY. VERY LITTLE RAIN TODAY, BUT CLOUDY AND A LITTLE BREEZY.
HIGH ONLY IN THE 60'S.

THE STATE OF IOWA FIREMEN'S CONVENTION IS UNDERWAY IN MAQUOKETA.
OFF TO A BIG START. DOUG GONNER, MAQUOKETA FIREMAN, TOOK ME ON
A GOLF CART TOUR OF THE GROUNDS THIS AFTERNOON. HE ESTIMATES ABOUT 3/4 OF THE FIREMEN ARE HERE ALREADY AND THE REST WILL ARRIVE TOMORROW
AND FRIDAY. AROUND 2,500 ARE EXPECTED FOR THE 130TH ANNUAL EVENT.
MOST WITH THEIR OWN RV'S, BUT SOME IN TENTS AND EVERY HOTEL AND MOTEL ROOM IN MAQUOKETA IS FILLED. THE EAGLES AUXILIARY IS SERVING BREAKFAST
AT THEIR CLUB AND THEY HAD 80 FOR BREAKFAST ALREADY THIS MORNING.'
THEY EXPECT A COUPLE HUNDRED TOMORROW MORNING. MAQUOKETA RESTAURANTS ARE STOCKED WITH FOOD AND WELCOME SIGNS AND OUTDOOR MENU BOARDS. ONE FIRE DEPARTMENT BROUGHT A COUPLE MOBILE
GRILLS AND ARE FIXING PORK TONIGHT RIGHT NEAR PEARSON HALL.'
SATURDAY NIGHT IS STEAK NIGHT AND KALMES CATERING OF ST. DONATUS WILL DO UP ALL THE STEAKS THAT NIGHT. KMAQ WILL BE ON THE AIR "LIVE" FROM IN FRONT OF BOYER HALL, STARTING AT 6:05 TONIGHT. I'LL BE TALKING TO VISITING FIREMEN AND LOCAL FIGHTERS TOO. ITS A FESTIVE TIME IN
MAQUOKETA. AFTER READING TODAY'S NEWS ON THIS REPORT, BE SURE TO GO ON DOWN AND TAKE A LOOK AT THE PHOTOS I TOOK. REMEMBER, YOU CAN ENLARGE EACH PHOTO JUST BY CLICKING ON IT.

I WATCHED THE CITY COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT. THERE WAS QUITE A BIT OF DISCUSSION ON THE DOWNTOWN FIRE MESS. WAS GLAD TO SEE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON THAT THE TEMPORARY FENCE WAS PUT BACK IN PLACE.
FOR SEVERAL DAYS, A SEGMENT CAME DOWN AND NO ONE FIXED IT.
LAST NIGHT, THERE WAS THE SUGGESTION THAT A PLYWOOD FENCE BE PUT UP ALONG MAIN STREET TO HIDE THE MESS A LITTLE, AND THAT KIDS BE INVITED TO PAINT SCENES ON IT. COME ON! WELL.... THE COUNCIL VOTED TO DO THAT. THE CITY COUNCIL WANTS THE MESS TO BE CLEANED UP, BUT THEY DON'T WANT TO SPEND ANY CITY MONEY. THE OWNERS DO NOT HAVE INSURANCE TO DO THE CLEAN-UP. ONE BUSINESS OWNER THAT LOST A BUILDING IN THE FIRE SAID THEY WOULD GIVE THEIR LAND, AT NO COST, TO THE CITY. THE COUNCIL WANTS SOMEONE TO CHECK ON STATE AND FEDERAL FREE MONEY, BUT EVERYONE KNOWS THAT'S SIMPLY WISHFUL THINKING.
I DON'T HAVE THE ANSWER, BUT IF I WERE CITY MANAGER, I WOULD DO NOTHING ELSE UNTIL I GOT THIS PROBLEM SOLVED. MAYBE THE CITY COULD AGREE TO MATCH EVERY DOLLAR DONATED BY INDIVIDUALS, BUSINESS PLACES, CLUBS.....
ALL COULD SIGN A 3-YEAR PLEDGE WITH THE FIRST YEAR DUE IN 90-DAYS,
THEN THE REST IN 2009 AND 2010. $250,000 IN PLEDGES AND $250,000 FROM A CITY G-O BOND. AFTER THE MESS IS CLEANED UP, THE CITY WILL HAVE A CHOICE PIECE OF REAL ESTAGE TO SELL AND RE-COUP SOME (MAYBE ALL) OF THE MONEY PLEDGED. IF THE BIG RETAILER THAT HAS BEEN INTERESTED IN THE ENTIRE AREA DECIDES TO BUY, THE PLEDGES WON'T BE NECESSARY. THAT RETAILER IS STILL SLIGHTLY INTERESTED! IF A DRIVE IS STARTED, I'M READY TO MAKE A PLEDGE
AND I'M SURE THERE WILL BE MANY OTHER PLEDGES MADE TO GET THIS HUGE DOWNTOWN PROBLEM SOLVED.
ANYBODY ELSE HAVE AN IDEA? EMAIL ME IF YOU DO AND I'LL PASS IT ON.

ALL THE TIME I HAVE FOR THIS DAILY REPORT TODAY. PLEASE TAKE TIME TO LOOK AT THE PHOTOS BELOW.

FIREMEN, WELCOME TO MAQUOKETA!!!

THANKS FOR CHECKING IN EVERYBODY.
