SUNNY THIS MORNING....CLOUDY THIS AFTERNOON....HOT....A FEW SRINKLES AND THAT WAS IT. HOPEFULLY, SOME RAIN WILL COME TONIGHT.
THE MAQUOKETA OPTIMIST CLUB HELD THEIR ANNUAL "RESPECT FOR THE LAW""
DINNER LAST NIGHT. JIM REGENWETHER WAS HONORED FOR HIS YEARS OF SERVICE AS DISPATCHER AT THE LAW CENTER UNTIL RETIRING BECAUSE OF HEALTH PROBLEMS EARLY THIS YEAR. YEARS AGO, HE AND HIS DAD RAN THE MAQUOKETA BOTTLING WORKS AT THE NORTH EDGE OF MAQUOKETA. ANYONE REMEMBER THEIR "GOODY POP"?
THE MAQUOKETA FIREMEN WERE CALLED TO THE WADY INDUSTRIES BUILDING YESTERDAY AFTERNOON ON WEST GROVE STREET. SMOKE IN THE ATTIC FROM AN OVERHEATED BLOWER.
THE COMMUNTY OF ANDREW WILL HAVE THEIR ANNUAL BRIGG'S MEMORIAL DAYS CELEBRATION THIS SATURDAY, SUNDAY AND MONDAY AT THE ANDREW PARK.
A PARADE AT 1 SUNDAY AFTERNOON. THE EVENT NAMED AFTER THE FIRST GOVERNOR OF IOWA, ANSIL BRIGGS, BURIED IN ANDREW.
BRINGING UP CHARLES GALLAGHER IN YESTERDAY'S REPORT, HAS BROUGHT FORTH
EMAILS, PHONE CALLS AND A KMAQ GUEST BOOK ENTRY.
HE WAS A GOOD TRUMPET PLAYER , SAYS DON HENNINGSEN, WHO PLAYED NEXT TO HIM IN THE MAQUOKETA HIGH SCHOOL BAND. CHARLES ANDERSON IN GEORGIA, FORMERLY OF MAQUOKETA, EMAILED ME AND SAID CHARLES GALLAGHER SPENT A YEAR OR TWO AT CORNELL AND THEN AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN. WONDER IF HE WAS THERE WHEN DOCTOR BROMAN WAS. DON HENNINGSEN SAYS THE DAD, CLINT GALLAGHER, ALSO WAS A GOOD MUSICIAN, PLAYING THE CLARINET. DAD, CLINT, WAS A MAQUOKETA JEWELER AND HE AND HIS WIFE ARE BURIED IN MT. HOPE CEMETERY. IN LATE YEARS, HE LIVED WITH CHARLES IN MARYLAND, OR WASHINGTON, D.C. AREA. CHARLES WAS THEIR ONLY CHILD. CHARLES PLAYED FOR THE NATIONAL SYMPHONY IN WASHINGTON, D.C. SAYS BOB OSTERHAUS AND WAS A PROFESSOR OF MUSIC AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND FOR MANY YEARS, PROBABLY UNTIL RETIRING. BOB BOUGHT THE OSTERHAUS PHARMACY STORE BUILDING FROM CLINT AND CLINT'S BIG HOME ON AUSTIN AVENUE ALSO. EVERYONE BELIEVE CHARLES IS STILL LIVING, SOMEPLACE. OH BY THE WAY, THIS ALL STARTED AT THE MASONIC WAFFLE BREAKFAST WHEN I AND NANCY (NANCY MOORE OF SUNSHINE DAYS--THERE ARE TWO NANCY MOORES IN TOWN) WERE EATING WITH LONGTIME MAQUOKETA PHOTOGRAPHER LOWELL HENRY (50 YEARS PLUS) AND HIS WIFE, DIANA. WE GOT TO TALKING ABOUT THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD (INCLUDING THE BIG HURST HOUSE NO ONE HAS LIVED IN FOR YEARS, NOW OWNED BY KEN MOORE) AND THE GALLAGHERS CAME UP IN CONVERSATION FOR SOME REASON AND LOWEL STARTED TELLING THAT HE WAS ONE OF MAQUOKETA'S BEST MUSICIANS OF THE PAST. KMAQ STARTED OFF IN A CLINT GALLAGHER BUILDING AT 136 1/2 SOUTH MAIN STREET, PAYING HIM $35 A MONTH RENT. I NEVER MET THE MAN THOUGH. HE RENTED TO THE ORIGINAL OWNERS OF KMAQ IN 1958. END OF STORY, UNLESS ANYTHING ELSE INTERESTING COMES MY WAY.
IT HAS BEEN RAINING HARD IN MAQUOKETA WHILE DOING THIS REPORT.
U. S. SENATOR JOE BIDEN IS COMING TO MAQUOKETA MONDAY, MEMORIAL DAY.
MORE ABOUT THAT TOMORROW.
THE NEW "PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN" MOVIE STARTS TONIGHT AT THE 61 DRIVE-IN AND AT MY DOWNTOWN THEATRE TOMORROW. IT IS EXPECTED TO DO MEGA BUSINESS AND BREAK RECORDS THIS LONG WEEKEND. I'LL BE OUT THERE TONIGHT TO GET IT STARTED AT 8:45. IT IS 2 HOURS, 45 MINUTES LONG.
